We were passing through Wichita, and instead of stopping at the Kansas gas station islands on I-35, I looked long and hard for something a little better to stop at. Old Mill Tasty Shop sounded interesting. It's in an interesting Old Town area that had free parking and art on the street to enjoy. It wasn't too far off I35, so it became a nice break during a day of driving. The atmosphere inside was just as quaint. This is a classic soda fountain. We showed up well after noon, so getting in wasn't hard. I can see how it might get tough at times though. I had the Reuben and it was textbook. My daughter got the chicken salad sandwich on the fluffiest white break you've seen. We both chose the side salad, which was a delightful mix of greens with sprouts. I had to finish off the meal with a vanilla malt. It was not clear to me if they made the ice cream, but they were generous with the malt. Best malt I've had in years. Only problem was I sucked it down and should have bought a second one. read more

Stopped in here for some lunch while staying in downtown Wichita. This restaurant has the vibe of a 1904's/1950's ice cream shop. You know the ones that make their own Coca-Cola and Root Beer floats? That vibe! My server was absolutely amazing! Offered a wonderful smile and the service to match! Now for the food: I was persuaded to try the special of the day by the server, which was something called "the Sancho." The server was adamant that Wichita, KS has the best Mexican food (her words, not mine). I am very critical of Mexican food, one because I am Mexican, and two, because I grew up in southern Arizona, which actually has the best Mexican food, and there's no convincing me otherwise. Let's just say the "The Sancho" was by far the most Caucasian rendition of the burrito I have ever tried. Not good at all.. If I ever return to Wichita, I would come back to this place for the atmosphere and the amazing service, but I'll definitely try something on the menu that's not Mexican food, just to be safe. So the last time I've been this place was probably about 20 yess ago. The place hasn't changed! The cute bar counter on the right side of the shop and seating on the left side. I don't think the menu has changed either! It wasn't until I got my order was when I realized the chicken salad sandwich was also the last thing I had here too! I wish I ordered something different, but it was still good! We also got the beef brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad. I wish the sides were larger! I am vegetarian and was happy to see more vegetarian options on the menu. I ordered the tomato bisque, 1/2 a grilled cheese and a side salad. The location has lots of character from old refrigerators in the front of the restaurant to wooden booths and a counter that you can sit at too. It reminded of an old soda shop. The prices were reasonable. The portions were generous. We had the lasagna, open faced quesadilla, a side salad which even included alfalfa sprouts and cheese :), ice cream sundae and cheesecake. Kind of the place you can count on always getting something simple and freshly prepared. This place isn't fancy. It's clean and has character. Five stars for the atmosphere. Unfortunately the food, while good, is rather average. This place is worth the visit for the atmosphere alone. It's like stepping back into the first half of the last century right down to the soda jerks. You feel as if I've stepped into a restaurant during the 1930's or '40's. The offer a daily blue plate special. When we stopped in it was chicken enchiladas. They were good, bit not Mexican restaurant good. My wife had the club sandwich. Again it was good, but it's just a club sandwich. Overall a unique experience but not a five star dining experience. Then again, it's not meant to be. In my opinion, the food here used to be better. The sandwich I had essentially had two slices of not so desirable pre-packaged Turkey pastrami and a little bit of mustard. The location and the atmosphere of the restaurant inside is nice, the food leaves a lot to be desired. If you are vegan or vegetarian then you will have a hard time finding anything to eat there. Old Mill Tasty Shop is a must for anyone visiting Wichita for the first time. It's a downtown classic and you can't find the same atmosphere anywhere else. They do have a pretty small menu but it's one where most people could find something they would like. I have always ordered and loved their chicken salad club and highly recommend their daily specials. You also can't go wrong with a good old-fashioned soda float or a malt. It is a very small space and can get extremely loud when they are busy. This is something to keep in mind if you're dining with a bigger group or have kids who are sensitive to noises. I completely understand when you are serving something like 15 different sandwiches you have to make sacrifices to keep the orders manageable, but having just been to Central Grocery and Deli in New Orleans (THE quintessential muffaletta) it did leave a little wanting. The cheese, meats and olive spread were consistent throughout and made for a good sandwich overall. Service and Overall thoughts 5/5 Service was prompt and my water was regularly filled through my quick lunch. She was pleasant and gave me a quick run-down of the menu in addition to the rotating specials once I was seated. Overall this was a great choice when in downtown Wichita for a quick bite to eat. Staff were kind and I can say my drink never got to the bottom of the cup without being asked if I wanted a refill which is how I mainly judge many places. This was a time I have been so disappointed in a restaurant and their staff. Went after my husband's oncology appointment since he loves their shakes and it is close. When we got there the lunch crowd was gone and not busy. We were sat, order taken. Food arrived before our drinks and when the waitress brought our drinks she gave us our check, guess we were not allowed to order dessert. She left and we literally did not see her again at our table, she waited on her other tables but never asked if we needed anything. Yes, we needed a to go box and drink container. Had to go to the counter, where there were two people behind the counter, must have been wearing the invisible cloak because no acknowledged me. Finally had to ask another waitress if I could some help. Her reply, I am delivering food to my table. Who have you hired?
