My experience with one of the veterinarians here was poor in treating my dog. She rushed through complex test results, giving lengthy technical explanations without prioritizing key findings or ensuring I understood them, and offered no collaborative discussion to support decision-making. When I asked to see another veterinarian in the practice, I was refused, which destroyed my trust in the hospital. She ordered multiple tests without a clear working diagnosis, prescribed doxycycline without advising me to stop Rimadyl, and prescribed prednisone without disclosing significant potential side effects--resulting in negative health impacts for my dog. I later sought a second opinion at another practice. That veterinarian reviewed the same results, ruled out several conditions, and identified likely liver cancer--recommending only one additional diagnostic (CT scan of the abdomen) to confirm. In a single 30-minute discussion, that vet addressed all my concerns, answered every question with reference to the test results, and provided the information I needed to make an informed care decision. My dog is now off the unnecessary medications, comfortable, and on a focused care plan. read more

Last week we adopted a dog and he had kennel cough he was put on antibiotics and given a chest xray. The xray was $371. The kennel cough spread to my other dogs. My oldest dog went in was given antibiotics and also an xray. The xray this time was $1000. When i spoke to the vet who i have never seen before (her name is DR ERICA MIKULANCEZ ) Her reply was "As an adult you should have asked for an estimate". Then as we talked more she said " this case is resolved there is nothing further to discuss". I have been with this practice over 10 years. I admire Old Mill so much because they did such an incredible job taking care of my sweet Penny girl up until her last breath on this earth. Going to them nearly everyday for 6 months, between her cancer diagnosis and intestinal surgery recovery, they were so good to her and always made her feel comfortable since the vet was not her favorite place to be! You could feel the love from them and how much they generally care for the well-being of your pet. My two dogs now have also been taking care of so well! Steer aware from Old Mill. My dog has a huge mass on her spleen, which we discovered when we were out of state. We were required to provide the name of our primary veterinarian for a referral; however, Old Mill failed to follow up with us for over ten days and could not be bothered to follow up with CVCA so our dog could get a scan. This office had to call the morning of her procedure, two weeks after we scheduled her appointment. Does a vet office not know that all scans require a referral? Of course, they do, as I'm sure there is some kickback mechanism. Surely they do, but what would be the reason they wouldn't do so two weeks after they knew we had scheduled the scan? Then we paid $2,500 for a scan, we were NOT given a copy of the report, and Old Mill was too busy to call us back with the results. We again had to make contact, and the Dr. was put out as we followed up with the hospital again. A spleen can rupture, but obviously, that is no big deal to Old Mill and her vet. Again, a promised phone call from Old Mill never came, and we followed up again today to find that they could not fit our dog in for surgery for a splenectomy. Specifically, Dr. C stated, "We cannot fit her in when you want us to." Dr. C was shifting our dog's well-being into our lap based on things that were out of our control. Do you not pay Vets for their professional knowledge? This office neglected their professional responsibility and laid the blame for a burst spleen in our lap. We never gave a date, but rather her vet instead of checking on the surgeon's schedule in their computerized that evening, stated she would need to speak with him in person. Based on the two weeks of non-response we were not at all surprised unfortunately that we were told Dr. Husson was "not available on any schedule ~ but a nonsensical excuse was given that no techs were available for three week. (again this could have been seen in the scheduling software that evening) See what she did there, "no Vets are at fault or have ownership in this. Therefore, we must start from scratch and incur another consulting fee, but everyone except the customer benefits from these kickbacks. After our conversation, Dr. C, when we put the cards on the table and let her know this delay was a "we don't want your business," Her vet called us back and paraphrased our displeasure: "Oh, I did not call you back?" and this is why you are disappointed in my service, that is correct; you or anyone else from this office failed to call us (or simply text) to discuss the next steps before her scan or after, nor did they save a surgical spot. But do you know who made an unsolicited follow-up, not once but twice, our dog's new rehab vet. Our dog also has arthritis, and the rehab called us twice while we were on vacation after hearing about her spleen. The rehab practice has changed our dog's medication, and her mobility has dramatically increased. But just this week, they've distanced themselves from us after speaking to Dr. B. She does have a surgical consult scheduled, and that office told us about symptoms of a ruptured spleen and to take her to an emergency vet, again something Old Mill Vet never offered when they blew us off. Before going to the rehab vet, which Old Mill recommended, things were okay, and a few years ago Old Mill suggested our dog needed a $1,400 teeth cleaning; we had it done - not an urgent procedure - and they fit her with greater urgency than for a spleen growth which has the potential to rupture! read more

I definitely wouldn't recommend this veterinary hospital to anyone who genuinely cares for their pets. My dog was patient of this veterinary hospital for 14 years, never missed a check up or an appointment, and somehow they missed diagnosing her with congestive heart failure, pancreatitis, kidney disease, and high blood pressure until it was way way too late. We got that unbelievable diagnosis all in one sitting- and it was a very hard pill to swallow. How on earth does a trained vet miss ALL of that? After her very late stage diagnosis we had only a few painful months left with our dog- it was stomach turning. After she was put to sleep not so much as a phone call to see how we were doing... you'd think after 14 years a phone call would be the least they could do. But... we did receive a condolence card... it arrived two months after the fact. I can't begin to tell you how grossly upsetting that was. Then adding insult to injury they misdiagnosed my cat. Said he had multiple tumors in his liver when in fact after we reviewed the images from his X-ray and ultrasound we discovered he only had one growth and we aren't sure what it is because his blood work is normal and we can't do a biopsy. No his situation isn't great but it's not entirely the nightmare we were initially led to believe either. Instead of working on options to help him we were told we should put him down in 2 weeks. Oh heaven forbid you call them out on their mistakes... because they get crazy defensive. They actually have the nerve to call you, the emotional pet owner, rude... then try to turn things around and somehow blame you. When you are completely heartbroken trying to process completely devastating information this is absolutely not the kind of horrific treatment you or your pet deserve. Empathy and compassion is sincerely lacking! And don't cry, lord don't cry because you'll be accused of yelling. My advice... if in Leesburg and you care about your fuzzy family member and genuinely want to give them quality care take them to Town Animal Hospital, Leesburg Animal Hospital, or Market Street Animal Clinic. Don't settle for second rate bottom feeding veterinary care, because in my opinion based on my personal experience (which can only be described as devastating) that's exactly what you'll be giving your pet at Old Mill. If your pet is healthy or has a minor issue you'll have great experiences at Old Mill... it's when situations are far less than ideal things become drastically different. And it's difficult times like that when you see the true character of the people serving your pet. Sadly I've met others who have had similar experiences as my family and I have with Old Mill... makes me so sad I didn't know sooner. We don't have that many years with our pets... they leave us much too soon. It's important to align them with a vet who truly cares and won't miss the important things so you aren't robbed of precious time with them as I truly feel my family and I were. read more

Took my dogs there for years. They were good with them and I felt they were well taken care of.

This place is a gem. My westie started going there for a teeth cleaning and minor surgery. Start to finish, everyone was friendly and helpful. You never get the sense they are getting irritated at helping you and answering questions. The vets are AMAZING... so kind, caring, and take the time to explain everything. I bred show Westies in the past and am rather picky. I have absolutely no complaints. Second visit, my dog has sores and stuff after I left him for 4 days in the care of a home dog walker. This office saw him immediately and we have solutions!! So pleased. read more

Our family includes four animals (three cats and a dog), and I can honestly say that Old Mill has always provided extraordinary care, not just for our animals, but for us as a family (twenty years is a long time; over the years we've had to say too many sad goodbyes -- yet with each one of these we've felt that our grief was shared by the Old Mill team, and our heartbreak was met with the utmost respect). We love Old Mill Veterinary Hospital! We moved to Leesburg last Spring with our Senior Basset Hound, Rosie. Our neighbor recommended Old Mill and we are so glad she did. We appreciate the thought and consideration that the Vets and Techs put into decisions related to Rosie's care. And, we love the fact they seem to be on the forefront of cutting edge treatment options. The entire staff has been great...from my very first phone call to make the initial appointment, to my visit there yesterday to pick up refills of Rosie's medication. Everyone is polite and helpful when I call...and, no matter how busy they are when we walk in, they always meet me and Rosie with a smile. Even though we've only been in Leesburg a short time, we consider it home...and we plan to be here for a long, long time. This review is for my recent experience with grooming here. Samantha is AAAAAAMAZING! I have a 6month old Persian kitten who refuses to groom himself, and runs anytime I grab a comb at home. That being said I knew grooming him wasn't going to be easy, but desperately needed to be done. Samantha transformed him with a bath and blow out into the fluffiest, softest, tangle free kitten I have ever seen. I never got called at work or side eyed because he definitely had some mats, the entire thing was handled so professionally and Kindly. All of the staff seemed really nice and helpful too. I also expected my kitten to be traumatized and hide under the bed for the next three days, but he came home relaxed and happy to be looking so good! I'm waffling about only 3 stars. Old Mill has caring Drs and competent, friendly techs. Service there has been good, and I felt my dogs were well cared for. The reason for only 3 stars is as of late - they seem to have bought into corporate pharmaceutical hype and are pushing anything that comes down the pike in terms of this vaccine or that. Just listen to the sales pitches coming from the "on-hold pitch-voice" Do yourself a favor and do some research on the drugs they are pushing. Nothing is a panacea, and everything being pushed by corporate pharma has drawbacks, however, it DOES pump up any bill you get. We lost our dog Scamp in September while visiting Leesburg to see our daughter. We stopped at Old Mill because we had boarded our previous dog there and trusted their good care. Though Scamp had passed away in the car and was not able to be revived, the Vet and entire staff were so caring and compassionate in recognizing our grief. He was wrapped in a soft blanket and we were given as much time as we needed to be with him. Several weeks later we got a wonderful sympathy card signed with sweet notes by each staff member and footprints of our dear Yorkie. Our dog was not their patient but it was the most caring and sincere gesture that we will appreciate and remember forever. Thank you to the wonderful staff of Old Mill. I do really love this vet. We began using them out of convenience since we board the dog 1-2 times a year at the adjacent kennel. I love that I can have her get her annual check up while she is at the kennel, it's so convenient. And then I know they have her records while I am gone in case something comes up... the vet is right there. These vets offer urgent care, they will let you get counsel over the phone from a tech or vet to see if you should treat at home first, and they keep in mind the big picture and are NOT looking to sap more money out of you the best way they know how. They focus on the patient, and the family priorities. Last week I had to call and request an "urgent" appointment. They put me on the phone with a tech, who talked to the vet, and ended up calling in an Rx and providing instructions on treating her at home through the weekend, instructing me to bring her Monday if she wasn't improving. Guess what? She is "all better". :D I feel so lucky to have connected to this vet which was, ironically, a simple convenience because the boarding was recommended to us. read more

We used to love this place. We have been taking our dogs here for a long time. This past week our dog took ill and we inquired to have her looked at. We were told by the receptionist the soonest she could be seen was a full 72 hours. Again, no call from an actual doctor, just a no from a receptionist. We went to another Animal Hospital who took us in immediately. When I called back the day of the appointment and ask to speak to an actual Vet 72 hours later, I was told someone would call me back. They didn't. I wonder who actually runs this business? The front desk or the actual Vets??? We have moved our Dogs to someone who actually cares. I would not recommend this place to anyone seeking decent animal care WHEN IT COUNTS! read more

We began using the veterinary clinic after being so happy with our dogs boarding experience. Can't say enough good things about this practice! The veterinarians are wonderful, the techs all truly love pets and the front desk staff are friendly and well organized. I live in Herndon and drive by MANY veterinary hospitals to use Old Mill and am happy to do so for the service, care and compassion we receive. The boarding kennel is fantastic too...and if their groomers did Saturday appointments they would be the trifecta of pet care. read more

Our dog died of low glucose induced seizures on 2/19/2011. On 1/14/2011 we had bloodwork done at Old Mill. The results of the bloodwork indicate that he had low glucose. The vet instead of telling me about that writes on the chart "suspect glucose inaccurate." I didn't see the chart until I had to transfer him to an emergency hospital. By then it was too late. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. They had the info in hand and chose to ignore it. For that my dog died. read more

We inherited Old Mill when we adopted our dog that was already established there. Through many years of service, it was very obvious that the doctors and staff care a great deal about their patients. Whether it was making sure we had enough prescription dog food, to changing treatments as our dog aged, we knew they were looking out for what was best for our dog. And, as our dog recently reached the end of his life, they did several surprising things that showed they truly considered him to be part of a caring family. Ok, so we are new in town and decided to check this place out. All I have to say, is that if you don't know what to do with your extra cash come here and they will gladly take it from you. We were totally blindsided with the bill. Our previous vet would a least give us the courtesy of telling us how much things are going to be beforehand. They take excellent care of our dog who is allergic to a lot, but she is in great health. They did all of the allergy tests and followed them up with the proper treatment. She is on the correct diet now and all allergy symptoms are gone. The staff is very friendly and they treat my dog as if she is their own. read more

This is my first review on yelp ever! I'm so disappointed with how I was treated and written off on the phone by the old mill staff- let me explain... I went to old mill with my previous dog for about two years and had a great experience at old mill- this dog was 13/14 years old so we went in frequently for health problems (she did have a uti once). We put that dog down in January and just adopted a new dog 2 weeks ago- I called today because I think our new dog has a uti (peeing in the house, multiple times outside- clearly uncomfortable) and the receptionist wanted to wait until Friday and then when I really pushed for her to get in today she said it would be a 96$ upcharge!!!! They were clearly not interested in retaining my business or helping my dog! I called a vet down the street and are going in now. This place is over priced and disappointing. read more

To be fair, we have never been to this vet. I was going to take our new puppy there, but then I was told by the owner that 'Lyme cannot be transmitted to puppies' (congenitally). For a doctor in the hot bed of Lyme, I was very disappointed to hear that they would make such a statement. Can't say enough good things about this practice. I've been taking my maniac dog, Johnny Cash, there since we adopted him in July 2015. I didn't know until I went to pay the bill that they offer a complementary first examination since he was adopted - that was an awesome surprise. I have seen 4 different doctors at the practice; I don't mind if he sees the same vet each time - they are all awesome. Scheduling is always super easy and convenient. On the few occasions where something has come up that isn't necessarily an emergency but not something I want to wait to take care of, I have been able to get same-day appointments. Johnny loves all the staff and so do I... They're all very patient and very understanding - my dog has to be the only one who actually pulls me INTO the door at the vet. As far as cost, let's face it, vets are pricey no matter where you go. As someone on a tight budget, I feel that Old Mill does a great job at offering cost-efficient treatments and options. We've been taking our 2 dogs to OM for over 7 years. We have seen a number of different doctors and all have been very thorough and kind. Our dogs got in a fight with each other with one being somewhat injured and requiring surgery. They were able to get us in right away and took great care of her. A number of times we have had to call last minute for a bordatella vaccination and they are very accomodating about getting us in right away. They also send you paper/email reminders when your pet needs their annual exam and shots. We're very happy with the care our pets receive there and drive from Sterling to Leesburg for that reason. read more

They are simply the best veterinary practice we have ever used. They are caring and very good at finding cures for animals. My dog Luke had chronic air infections, so after having no success with other practices we went to Old Mill. They tried every known cure with minimal success. Eventually they tried an experimental drug that cured his ear infections forever. When he had to put Luke down, they were very caring and understanding. Their actions eased the burden of putting him down. I am forever grateful to them for the care they provided Luke. read more

We've been taking my now 11 year-old Bichon, Skylar, to Old Mill for most of her life for grooming as well as veterinary care. We have always been very happy with the care they provide for her and the great customer service their staff gives to pet owners. About three weeks ago, she tore her ACL jumping onto the couch and I immediately called them. They had me on the phone with a licensed vet tech within minutes and, after explaining the situation, they gave me a few options (bring her in immediately, schedule an appoint, or just wait and see how she is handling the injury before making a decision). I ultimately decided to bring her in to get checked. The doctor took the time out of his fully booked schedule to talk to us about what had happened to Skylar and what we needed to do to get her back to her healthy, playful self. Due to a heart murmur Skylar has had since she was a puppy, surgery and typical rehabilitation was not an option so we went the laser treatment route. I met with Jason, and it was probably the all time greatest, most straight forward customer service and treatment I've ever experienced. He made sure to develop a relationship with me to help Skylar feel more comfortable and secure. I was able to hold her during every quick treatment (in and out within 30 minutes or less), and after 3 weeks, she was doing great! I really, really appreciated the office calling to check up on Skylar regularly and them doing everything they could to help her get back on all four legs! Thanks!! read more
