My brother and I were in the neighborhood and stopped into this spot for lunch. He had the patty melt and I had the mesquite chicken sandwich. Both were very good. The guy that waited on us was friendly. This is one of those sort of unique neighborhood spots that sort of lurks in the shadows of other, larger places. If you prefer the smaller places with a warmer, more local feel, you will enjoy this place. We'll definitely be back to work on the beer list sometime. read more

We will be back! This is a new St Charles favorite and must go! Ignore any reviews where people complain about smoking- it is now a smoke free restaurant. If it wasn't we would not come back :) The patio is adorable, large and comfortable! Loved Old Millstream Inn. So many choices of beers. We ordered the artichoke dip, and it was very good. It was served with fruit and crackers, and the waitress brought more crackers when we asked. Went there this evening with my husband and two of our good life long friends. Again, good food. Really think it's neat that they are so dog friendly...to a point. This review covers two visits to The Old Millstream Inn. First visit - my wife and I stopped in for a late lunch. The restaurant want very crowded, so we found a table outside on the tree covered patio. I was impressed with the extensive beer list. There were we'll over 100 be selections of domestic, import and microbrew beers. Our server was friendly and attentive, initially. The food was good, although it took awhile to reach out table. When it was time to settle up, we waited and waited with no sign of our server. Finally, I walked inside looking for him, where I was told he had to leave. I guess the restaurant didn't think to send a different server to cover his tables? Second visit- there were four adults and a baby this time. We stopped in during the town's art festival. Again the patio wasn't too crowded, so we sat outside. We needed a high chair so asked for one when the server took our order. 10 minutes later, our drinks came, no high chair. 45 minutes later, our sandwiches came out, no high chair. 10 minutes later the high chair finally arrived. So almost an hour to get four sandwiches and a hot dog. Not only that, but they got my order wrong, so I had to send it back. 25 minutes later I received my corrected order. Unfortunately, everyone else in our party has finished eating. Pros - nice outdoor atmosphere, good food, excellent beer list. Cons- ridiculously slow kitchen (it shouldn't take an hour to make sandwiches an fries, especially when they weren't very busy.) All in all, we won't be making a third visit. The extraordinarily slow kitchen room it for us. There are plenty of other restaurant in the area worth going to. read more

This is a hidden gem in Saint Charles. Every time someone from out of town comes to visit us in Saint Charles this is our go to place to take them. We have only ever sat in the outside garden (gorgeous with a fire pit), we always bring our dog, the food is always great! Plus the prices aren't terrible either. Sweet baby kittens!!! I found a bloody mary in St. Charles that I'm in love with! They infuse their own pepper vodka but it's not so spicy that you can't handle it. Yummy! Can't believe I've never been here before. The patio is awesome! Very laid back vibe and the fire pits are a nice touch. All this time I've been going to Trailhead when I'm on Main Street. It was a beautiful fall day so we sat on the patio. We had a group of 5 and a 6th joined us after about 15 minutes. We all ordered drinks then number 6 orders a drink. She got her drink before anyone else then the remaining five drinks came out one by one. We ordered lunch, which took over an hour to receive. Three people ordered the chicken cordon bleu and the chicken was way over cooked and very dry. The only quick thing about our service was paying our checks. This is my FAVORITE place in all of St. Louis. I can't believe that I forgot to Yelp this place! This place is an awesome place to go on those nights you just wanna Chillax with some of your buddies. They have an awesome patio with fire pits and great service. They didn't have the firepits going one of the times I was there and they came and lit it because I was cold. (They came and asked.) They have an Amazing Bloody Mary here and an extensive beer selection. Their Steaks are sooo good. If you out in St. Charles you have to come here at least once. This is just a pretty cool place. The building itself is so unique, its got a little outdoor area that is nice, a bar in the basement that seems like an old cellar from the 18th century, and a small seating area upstairs with a bar. The beer selection was great. The homemade soups are excellent and worth going back for alone. Sandwiches are good. The only downfall was the service, which was mediocre, and the smoke, however, everything else made the whole experience very enjoyable. read more

This is my favorite bar. I try to take people to The Old Mill every chance I get. If The Grateful Dead became brewers and tried to re-create an Irish pub with an earthy feel, this would be the result. The staff are fantastic and if the owner isn't making sure you're having a good time, then you aren't paying attention. Stopped here to eat in the patio area while we were walking around the festival that had been going on this weekend. We were seated by the host, who brought us waters after ten minutes. Finally our waitress came by to take our order, which we waited another 30 minutes for sandwiches. The BBQ pork was cold by the time it got to the table, chicken salad sandwich dry, and the waitress never came back to check on us after she took the empty soup cup. We had to ask another gentleman for some ranch (same one who brought us our food, NOT our waitress). I understand it being super busy with the festival going on but you should be appropriately staffed for such event. After getting our check, we waited another 10 minutes before asking yet another (different) gentleman to run our card so we could leave. Food was mediocre, service was terrible. Terrible all the way around. First, the outside seating, although nice emanated with cigarette smoke which was disgusting. There were at least 5 empty tables available as we waited for 30 minutes to be seated. The "over 100" beers were ALL in bottles. No real descriptions, it was a guessing game if you wanted to try one. Besides, counting almost half of grocery store beers in that collection is nothing to brag about. The service was the saving grace because 2 servers were extremely friendly and accommodating. No issues with the people at all. The food was TERRIBLE. Over-cooked, tiny portion vegetables with no flavor and 2 of the 3 steaks (one prime rib) were well-done. We ordered medium rare. We didn't send them back as not to waste food. The salad was nothing to speak about but was at least fresh. No vegan options at all for those interested. What a complete waste of time and money. I inhaled the next table's cigarette smoke for an entire hour. I will not return. I'd rather have sat by the river and bbq'd myself. Poor Mary Kate. I feel so bad for you. Sounds like your expectations are rarely met. This place is actually one of the best kept secrets in St. Charles. Yes, if you sit outside sometimes the wait service is just a bit slow, but it's primarily a restaurant (upstairs) and a bar (downstairs). We've been going for years and it's well known that if you are sitting outside (which is really fantastic) you may have to go inside to get your drinks. The beer selection is incredible and the food is quite good. The prices are average for the area... probably a bit better in some cases. We always feel welcome, we never have to wait for service inside, and the bar setting itself is like something out of the old world: subdued lighting, great music, stone and wood, and way laid back. We stop in St. Charles occasionally on our way through Missouri, and we ate here because we could get in. Big mistake. The ambiance is fine, darkly lit and bar-like. Our waiter was remarkably terrible, avoiding eye contact and failing miserably to bring drinks and food in a timely manner. The table next to us left without their food, having waited long enough. Our cocktails were watery, and our second drinks did not come until after we had finished our meal. My husband noted that the beer selection was good, but he deemed his meal "inedible," and suspected that his tenderloin medallions were actually overcooked breaded sirloin medallions. My shrimp were on par with Applebee's, but the side salads were actually pretty good. My son ordered chicken noodle soup and found a total of one noodle in it, which was of the spaghetti variety (??) My girls' grilled cheese sandwiches were fine. Overall, however, a fairly wretched dining experience. read more

First, it was rather early on a quiet Monday evening; there wasn't much foot traffic on Main Street so everything was kind of empty. There was no hostess when we arrived, so we seated ourselves & looked at the drink menu. I've been in town several times and walked right past this place. I finally gave it a try and glad I did. The service was good and the beef tips were tender and tasty. I was in town from Los Angeles to visit a friend who lived in the area. First off, St. Charles is such a cute, little area with cobblestone streets and restaurants set in historic buildings. The first night I was in town we went here for a birthday party. I wouldn't say this is "my kind of place," but it's homey and everyone who works here is very welcoming. I could tell it was like the "Cheers" of the neighborhood because everyone seemed to know each other. Also, the drinks are so cheap! Coming from LA and getting 2 drinks for under $10, well, I felt like I was robbing them. The next night in town we headed to Mill Stream Inn again. I heard they had pretty good bloody mary's so my friend and I ordered one. They were delicious! Probably the best bloody mary I've ever had. Plus, that huge bloody mary was like $5!! Unreal. We also ordered a little food and I was surprised by their "fries." They almost looked like tater tots or potato balls, but were fries. I couldn't stop stealing them off my friend's plate. Another delicious!! If you're not a big smoker though don't walk into this place for too long because it gets REALLY smoky! But, the smoke is offset by the cool bartenders and the coziness of the place. You can even go out and sit by a fire. I loved that!! read more

The Old Millstream Inn gets 4 stars primarily because of the picturesque patio. It has an intimate feel as you step down into the patio, which is next to a stream. There is a nice, pleasant breeze from the fan on the side of the building, which keeps the heat away, and there are plenty of trees for shade, umbrella's are unnecessary. The black wrought iron patio furniture is pleasing as well. It's a good place to take a date on Main St. in St Charles. They don't have Corona, but the Pacifico is a nice replacement. The servers are friendly, but it should not have taken 25 minutes for soup and a chicken salad sandwich. Both are already prepared and just need to be poured or assembled. The chicken rice is a tasty soup, and the chicken salad sandwich was generous in size and pleasing. It's a pleasant place to relax, enjoy the evening, and play with your IPhone, even if you are dining alone. You can even bring your dog here on a leash. If I take my pomeranian, Yappy, here, they bring him a water bowl! How cool is that? read more

We had the Reuben/fries, burger and fries and a chicken salad and soup combo. The kids had grilled cheese's and fries.
