As with every review for a Chinese restaurant in town, it should be known that there's nothing past a 3-star in Tucson. It pretty much all caters to "american-chinese" tastebuds, maybe with the exception of the two dim-sum places in the town. Old Peking has a crappy eating environment. There's only one room with a window and that gets crowded pretty fast at lunch. It seems like they changed ownership about a year ago, and the food has gotten somewhat better. I don't think i'd order anything off the main menu, but if i did, this place would get 2 stars. The saving grace are the dishes on their Szechuan menu, which they'll only give to asians unless you ask for it specifically. (I don't have an accent or look like a FOB so even I have to ask for it half the time). Yu shing eggplant and ma po tofu are pretty tasty. This is the first yelp review i've EVER made and I am DISGUSTED. I ordered 5 things for delivery and one was beef fried rice. They ended up bringing beef lo mein so I called them and they told me "don't eat the lo mein and we will bring your rice as soon as possible". An hour later they come to drop off my rice and they TOOK BACK THE LO MEIN, which had been touched and in my house for an hour. DURING A PANDEMIC. Going to devour some of the best veggie lo mein, veggie fried rice, veggie rolls and sweet and sour chicken I have ever had the pleasure of eating. This restaurant has the BEST sweet and sour sauce of any I have tasted. And while I have always been disappointed in the flavor of other restaurants' veggie lo mein, Old Peking's is amazing. Kind of expensive for a place that's just average. Me and my friends ordered duck and crispy tofu and the total came out to about 40 dollars including drinks. Duck was only okay, many pieces were scarce with meat which didn't justify the high price. The crispy tofu was actually really good but the restaurant itself was too small. Their single dining room got really loud with only just a few tables so I can't imagine what it would be like when it was actually busy. The service was pretty good though, our waitress was really nice and personable. However, I still wouldn't recommend this restaurant to any of my friends because there are others that are close by and better. read more

Sweet and sour pork was very disappointing, too much batter which was over cooked so much that you could not cut it with fork. Very few vegetables in dish and I left half of it there. Went with a group of nine friends and we ordered a variety of dishes including the Peking Duck C (C comes with soup, lettuce cups, duck and pancakes. It was enough to serve about 10 people). Then we ordered Mongolian beef (very spicy), vegetables deluxe, eggplant stuffed with shrimp (really good), barbecues port with string beans, shrimp in lobster sauce and a couple of other dishes. My favorites were the barbecued pork and eggplant but all items were fresh tasting and good. The wait staff were a bit overwhelmed but accommodating when we could catch them when we needed something. I am a fan. I've only ever eaten chinese food in America and I guess it's not as good as the chinese food in and around china buuuut I am a fan of this place. It may not be fancy and/or shiny with it's decor but every time we dine at Old Peking we are impressed with the service, the food and have packed in can get in there. This time we ordered Beef Egg rolls and Scallion pancakes for appetizers. I wish the Scallion pancakes had more scallions and less grease but none the less they were light, a little doughy in texture (not undercooked), flake crispy on the outside; just like the ones my friends, who immigrated from china, used to make. The egg rolls were nothing special just your standard egg rolls, they were good just not special. What was special were the entrees. I ordered the Sesame beef and my bf ordered the Kung Pao chicken. The beef was thin sliced and lightly breaded and fried but not greasy at all. The sauce is soo good too, I like mixed a bit into my rice. I wish it was served with broccoli. The Kung Pao chicken was definitely my favorite. The medley of veggies and the peanuts; the pepper pods and the juicy chicken chunks were on the money and the sauce coated every piece so lovingly. The chicken was not my choice but I pretty much bogarted the plate. The service was fast and the food was out so quick too but NOT too quick either. Only complaint was the waitress did not offer to refill out drinks until we were packing up our leftovers. Give this place a chance if you've never had chinese other that in America or enjoy "New England" style chinese food; I have a feeling you will not be disappointed. read more

This restaurant is a children's roller coaster of experiences for us. Every few months we give it a try and it seems like it is always different. Not so great and sometimes pretty good. This last time it was pretty tasty. We tried a couple other places first and they were either closed or didn't deliver until later so we opted for Old Peking. We kept it simple and just ordered the house lo-mein and orange chicken. The lo-mein was fine, pretty typical, but the orange sauce was delicious! Just needed a kick of sriracha and it was perfect. Coating was a little thick on some of the pieces of chicken but overall it was a good dish. Also delivery was quoted at close to an hour and food arrived in 30 minutes, great service. read more

Once Upon a Time this was a Chinese American restaurant and about 6 or 7 years ago there was a change of ownership. It Now features a mix of American Chinese and more authentic Fair especially Szechuan cuisine. Overall that's very good both in terms of food and service. I find the preparation of the American Chinese and the more authentic food is about equal you might try some different dishes that you've never tried before I think you probably would enjoy them especially if you like spicy food. read more

I've ordered delivery from here twice, both times it was satisfactory. The Spicy and Salted Wings were amazing, far better than I expected and what prompted me to order from them a second time. The Beef and Broccoli was also pretty good. It came in a generous portion, with fresh and crunchy broccoli and a side of rice. The Fried Vegetarian Egg Rolls are also quite good. Crispy and stuffed with delicious shredded veggies and spices. The sweet sauce that comes with them is pretty standard, though. I'd order more often, but their prices are a little on the high side. That being said, I decided to order from Old Peking today -- it was one of few that delivered to my house that I haven't tried yet. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the reviews were positive. Turns out, they're positive for a good reason. I was quoted 45-60min for my order, only for it to show up in 35. Good start. The food is very good; perhaps not the best I've ever had, but still very good. I ordered potstickers (which were perhaps a bit doughy, but very flavorful), crab puffs (quite good, if perhaps not the best), hot + sour soup (very sweet, for some reason, but still very good), and chicken fried rice (very moist and flavorful, easily the best dish I ordered). Factor in the fact that the portions are all generous for the price, and Old Peking is definitely earning its reviews. Is it the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life? Not really, no. Normal chinese restaurant tasting with no surprise or higher expectation. BUT, PLEASE BE AWARE YOUR FIRST BILL after eating. Once I was charged twice tip in two tickets without noticing by the waitress. The cost should be around 75 bucks, but when the first ticket arrived it shows 82 dollars. I thought it includes the tips so the next ticket should only be the customer's payment signature. BUT AT THE END OF THIS TICKET IT SHOWS TIP 15% = 12.3, 20% = 16.4 and 25% = 20.5. EXCUSE ME ??? WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON ??? When I face to the cashier and the waitress they said they know nothing about this. AND THEY PRINTED A CORRECT TICKET THEN I PAID THAT BILL . However, I think they use this lowlife trick so smoothly and quickly so it has to be a common trick that they usually use! I'm a fan of Old Peking, their food is always fresh, and toes the line between American Chinese food and more authentic Chinese cuisine. Given that I've enjoyed their dishes in the past, I decide to try their Hot and Sour Soup-- a favorite of mine that I've eaten many times in other cities. Old Peking's version is far too sweet. I've had my share of this type of soup and there are often differences between restaurants-- but instead of being spicy, sour and full of chicken or shrimp, theirs tasted like hot watery sweet and sour sauce and had egg, bamboo. and mushrooms (all good) but none of the heartier components I've come to expect. So far I have yet to find any good hot and sour soup in Tucson. If you know where I can find some, let me know!!! read more

Failed health code!! The inspector reported "multiple potentially hazardous foods" tested at temperatures greater than 45 degrees, including sushi rice that had been prepared the previous day and left in an unplugged rice cooker. Hand sinks throughout the restaurant were turned off and floor sinks were full of water and not draining due to a plumbing problem. The inspector also reported a "widespread rodent problem," noting rodent feces on food preparation tables, along walls, on food boxes, clean dishes, shelves and trays. In addition, the inspector observed a live rodent in an unlit storage closet. The inspector also reported holes, gaps and other forms of deterioration in the walls in several locations throughout the restaurant and excessive storage of unused items, often in unclean conditions. The manager of the restaurant would not comment about the inspections. During the Aug. 30 inspection, the operator of the restaurant voluntarily agreed to close the restaurant for cleaning, pest treatment and dishwashing. The restaurant reopened Sept. 1 after a follow-up inspection, but failed an inspection Sept. 12 that could have restored its regular license, said Renée Peyton, sanitarian supervisor for Pima County Health Department Consumer Health and Food Safety. "When you're dealing with rodents, you're going to have a pest control company that comes in and services the restaurant, and when we start running into problems, we ask about the service, the frequency of the service and the plan," Peyton said. "They cleaned up all evidence of the problem, but the inspector found new evidence of a rodent problem when she went out on the 12th. They're continuing to work on it, and have minimized it significantly, but not enough to fully comply with the code." County inspectors will continue to monitor the restaurant about every 10 days throughout its provisional status to ensure it's operating safely and making progress toward restoring its regular license, Peyton said. read more

The lady that took my order for delivery had a hard time understanding english and the delivery driver had a hard time finding my address. I ordered sesame chicken, sweet and sour pork, chicken egg rolls and changed one rice side dish into fried rice for $1 more. My feeling is if a Chinese place can make these standard dishes well, most everything will taste good. The chicken egg rolls were gross. I've tasted much better from the frozen section of a grocery store. The s/s pork was ok, mediocre because the s/s sauce was what gave it flavor and the sesame chicken was ok, but tastes much better at Golden Phoenix on Oracle Rd. It was really dissapointing that the fried rice had no egg or veggies at all, was just lightly brown and not much flavor. I will not be eating anything from here again. read more
