Based on the food it's not bad for Tucson. I guess I am use to better being from L.A. and having Chinatown and Monterey Park at my disposal. However, they did something really underhanded when I ordered takeout a while back, they "padded" the box. Here's the deal, I had ordered the orange chicken. As I got closer to the bottom of the box I found to much disgust and annoyance that whoever put the food in the box had also put a nice bed of broccoli that took up about 2/5 of the box. Boooo! Since I had ordered this same dish to go a number of other times I knew that broccoli wasn't part of it. I hope there's new management now but my mind is set. Being Chinese myself I understand that we as a people can be frugal, trying to cut costs, saving every penny earned and strecthing the dollar, however, this takes things way too far and is just cheating the customer. Still in search of good Chinese food in Tucson... I gave this place a try because someone recommended it. What can I say? There was nothing good about my meal. The hot and sour soup was way too sweet. The sesame chicken was all fried doughy stuff, barely any chicken, no veggies. Just not good at all. However, due to the abundance of good reviews, I'll probably give this place another try. I just have to put in a review so that I will remember for next time... An excellent selection of well-prepared Northern Chinese specialties and real Chinese home cooking not found elsewhere in Tucson. Great service as well. Be sure to ask for BOTH menus and ask the staff to translate the Chinese specialties of the day posted on the whiteboard at he entrance. Most entrees are under $10. read more

Old Peking...well the name tells it all as far as décor. Don't expect anything in that category since it is a very rundown atmosphere. As far as the food you get a good portion for the money since it is served FAMILY style. I had the garlic chicken it was flavorful but not over the top. Definitely had something that looked like chicken since I found a 1 1/2 inch bone within the flat thin pieces of what I think was the chicken. I showed it to the waitress who casually told me it was part of the chicken but no fuss about sorry that was in your meal. On the good side I did not get sick the next day. Will I go back? Ordered online for delivery - disaster. My husband and I ordered sesame chicken, lo mein and curry chicken. While it was delivered on time, the person delivering the food quoted the wrong price and then did not have ANY change, what so ever. Once he left to get change, my husband looked at our order and realized they did not give us sesame chicken but orange chicken - We called and they agreed to fix it and we just had to give it back to our delivery driver. Once he finally came back with change, took our wrong order and came back with the "correct" order the whole process was about 1.5 hours. We then find out that the sesame chicken is basically orange chicken with sesame seeds on it. Not impressed. The food here is really good. It's the quintessential Chinese restaurant with really salty, greasy food that everyone likes. My gf tried the pork belly dish and that was really outstanding. It was basically like eating soft bacon drenched in soysauce...It might sound bad but it was well balanced and delicious. My only real complaint about Old Peking is the decor. In general I really don't care too much about a restaurants atmosphere but Old Peking is pretty bad. It looks like an old eastern european hotel in there, complete with creepy vibe. The walls are solid white with practically no decorations what so ever. To be fair we did go at a slow hour, around 4 and there was no one else around, so the rooms were really quite and lifeless. Decided to treat myself to some take-out and ended up throwing away 30 bucks. I ordered sesame chicken, hot and sour soup, wontons and a diet coke to cancel out the aforementioned calories. They got my address wrong so I was literally standing outside in the rain coaching the delivery driver to my home. In that process the cat got out and added another level of joy to the situation. The driver was friendly and apologetic but in the madness of dealing with a wet cat and being in my pajamas I failed to realize that the coke I ordered was missing. Bummer. The first thing I tackled was the wontons. What the crap?? Pretty sure those had been on a buffet all day. Gave one to my dog and he thought it was a rawhide chew. Next, the soup. Meh. It was indeed hot. It was indeed sour. Nothing to write home about. Entree. Wait, what is this second box? A second entree I didn't order! Did I pay for this? What is it? Deep fried something or other. It was so thoroughly battered the inner meat nuggets were difficult to identify. The sesame chicken that I did order was a travesty. Either someone put a tire through a wood chipper and fried up the chunks or my house was the final chapter of an all-you-can-eat nightmare. After choking down a few bites, really wishing I had something more than water to wash it down with, I threw the whole lot away. I did not offer it to the dog because I love him. read more

There is a trick of finding a good Chinese restaurant (I mean real Chinese food) : just go check how many Chinese are dining in it. As a Chinese, I can guarantee that Old Peking is currently best in Tucson, and its Szchuan (some very spicy) food is very good (although it is so-so comparing with restaurants in China). A lot of UA Chinese students go there on a regular basis. However, I know most of you are only used to Americanized-Chinese food, sweet, sour and whatever. You know what, some of the food you guys normally order do not exist in China! That's why Old Peking has two sets of menus, one for Chinese and one for Americans and they are totally different !!! My suggestion is that next time you go there, look around and ask some Chinese guys sitting around and try some real food. read more

Have been to Old Peking several times now and rank it among my favorite chinese restaurants. I'm not a fan of dishes that are overly saucy, very sweet or salty. Old Peking items have so far been very flavorful and the meat tender without being overly anything. They carry a separate Szechwan menu which is really good but super spicy :) This is a "but" for me only because I am quite sensitive to spice. That being said, it is not a downside, just something that keeps me from ordering anything super spicy. The items I have had thus far have been very tasty. The mongolian beef isn't too spicy yet still gives a nice kick. I just really love how tender the beef is. Tried the lemon chicken one afternoon and the chicken inside was hot and moist! Delish. Also had the dumplings and some szechwan items that I don't recall the names of. The dining room is a no frills kind of atmosphere unlike Gee's Garden. Small with booths and tables but lets be honest here, we came for the food. And many of us here on yelp tend to go for the small "hole in the wall" places over P.F. Changs or Chile's for ethnic food. Given that my husband is not a fan of chinese food (with the exception of dim sum), whenever we do venture out for a chinese meal, it is likely to be from here or Gee's. I am happy to see our opinion of Old Peking is similar to others. We love mom-and-pop eating establishments, particularly those of the Chinese style. I really don't know what "real" or "authentic" Chinese food is, having never been there. But I do know what tastes good to me, and our dishes at Old Peking tasted very good. The egg foo yong was the best I have had in a long time, a little greasy but deliciious with a nice sauce on the side. Three large pancakes made for a large entree. My wife's chow fun (chewy noodles for those who don't know) was very tasty with that characteristic "smoky" flavor for lack of a better description, and the helping was huge. Our total bill was under $20, and those were some of the most expensive entrees that included shrimp, chicken and meats. There are numerous choices in their lunch special menu, all for $5.50 which includes appetizer and soup. A section entitled "chef''s specialties" is tantalizing. Finally, there is an interesting szechuan menu section. This is exactly the type of down and dirty (although this establishment was very clean) Chinese joint we seek wherever we go. First, this restaurant has a new owner. So ignore those old reviews. It's a family run restaurant now: the dad is in the kitchen and the son is behind the counter. And they may be the nicest restaurant owners ever. We've eaten at Old Peking a bunch of times and it's our favorite Chinese restaurant in Tucson. I grew up with East Coast Chinese food, and Old Peking is as close as it gets here. Try the pan friend dumplings. The sauce is tangy, every dumping is hand-made perfect, and they taste out of this world. Our kids love them too. The Mongolian Beef is another favorite of ours. As is the sesame chicken. The meats are fresh, well prepared and consistent every time we go. The fried rice isn't oily or greasy... and if you get it with chicken, it's all fresh and not fatty. The vegetable soup is cooked to order and always fresh. The hot and sour soup is nice and spicy... and meat free if you're a vegetarian. (We're not, obviously.) Oh, and try the garlic green beans! They're amazing! For lunch they have great specials... a perfectly sized noodle soup with duck. And great combination platters. Finally a Chinese restaurant in Tucson that understands what good Chinese food is! And now that they have their liquor license you can wash it all down with a Tsingtao. :-) read more

The place is your typical Chinese restaurant. Old, dirty carpet and unstable tables with chips and cracks. A family run restaurant with a slim payroll. However, it's saving grace is that the food is authentic and flavorful. We had the mago tofu, beef chow fun and stir fried beef tripe. The dishes were more tasty then a lot of Chinese restaurants in my hometown, Chicago. If you are not into the ambience of a restaurant, this is the place for you to eat. Just have to ignore the thoughts in your head of how dirty the kitchen may be based on the cleanliness of the front of the house. This is my favorite Chinese food place in town! Hoover, one of the principals, is always there and makes sure everything is great! There service is always right on. The wonton soup, lo mein, beef and broccoli are awesome. The one down fall is the green tea is kind of weak, but if you ask for extra tea bags, they are happy to oblige. read more

This place is not horrible but not great. Also their delivery took more than 60 min at 7:30 at night. Their potstickers were cold and had no sauce. The wantons were pretty standard and I'm sure they came frozen before getting fried. The Lo Meier was pretty solid and was plenty of food. I come to this place strictly out of convenience. It's about two blocks away from my house. Usually I don't have a problem but upon my last visit, I called in an order of shrimp fried rice. When I came to pick up my order, it was on time and everything was fine, so I left a very friendly tip. Upon walking out the restaurant I noticed they didn't give me any sauces.
