After returning from our trip to Puerto Rico, my husband and I thought.. how in the world will we get our sweet bread (Pan Sobao) now!?!! Well.. we were in luck!! This past weekend we were in Holyoke and a friend of ours told us about a place where we can get some awesome bread. Our eyes lit up.. we LOVE bread.. any kind of bread! He told us to hit up this place called Old San Juan Bakery.. my heart started to race. We were anxious...hoping just maybe they'd have some "pan sobao". Well guess what.. they did!!!! Yeah.. we were in heaven.. but not only because of the bread... but because it was a bakery that sold bread and every type of puertorican cakes, cheesecakes, and FLAN!! yes,,,, sweettt,,,creammmyyy,, flan!! Can we say heaven!! I didn't give this place a five only because my husband had the pineapple cheesecake and he liked it.. but he did say it was a bit dry. But I think it was because he waited til the next day to eat it. Either way.. we stuffed ourselves on bread and bought about 2 loafs pairs. Each Bag holds 2 loafs of warm sweet bread. The price wasn't bad. It was about $1.50 each bag. Can I repeat...HEAVEN!! O yeah, by the way, they serve breakfast and lunch.

Love this place so much! The selection is incredible. It's hard to choose! The sugar donuts are my favorite. Yum!

HUGE sandwiches, but very mediocre, at best, in taste. They have pan sabao! & their pastries are really good!

When we went in for a tasting, we had lunch first. The Bbq pork sandwich was one the best sandwiches I've ever had. We also got a tuna melt and a quiche which were both delicious. When Daisy came out with the cupcakes for us to try they were so helpful and I felt so confident that they would make everything run smoothly for delivery and set up at my venue. The cupcakes were beyond any expectation. The lavender cake was delicious, better than any other floral cake I've ever had. My fiancé who is a frosting critic couldn't get enough. I've tried a few other bakeries in the area and this cake blew them away. We are going back tomorrow to pick up more pastries to bring home. While the place itself is small, the staff was incredibly welcoming and it was a very comfortable lunch. Thank you Small Oven!!

The bread itself is average to above average depending on the loaf of the day. But its consistently troubling issue is the large amount of flour caked on and baked on the outside of the loaves. They use an extreme amount of flour on the raw dough as a release from their baking baskets, and after the bake they just leave it all stuck to the loaf. When I bring a loaf home I often spend a few minutes smacking it and scraping it over the sink where I dislodge so much raw flour from the outside of the bread. Sometimes there's a rind of undercooked flour cemented to the outside of the loaf. This is wildly unacceptable.

The ambiance was great. This place is cool & the service is counter ordering. I ordered the Fame…read moreTacos, one of each & Empanadas. I chose the Argentinian Beef which she said came with olives & rasins & the Brazilian Calabresa which I was Informed was filled with smoky brazilian sausage & a creamy parm-like cheese named catupiry. Despite all of their wonderful alcoholic drink options, I went for coffee. I am also going to carry out a loaf of bread that they can slice for you once it cools.. yup, it's that fresh & a fig pecan oatmeal cookie because they also look & sound delicious. Apparently they have a million playlists (this guy can Dj any party of mine) & the owner has the resteraunt logo showing up in the corner of the TV screen, where the videos are playing. Smart I give the Tacos a 4.5 out of 5. The flavor was bright (perfect fusion experience) the shell was a grilled flour wrap which was both crispy on the outside & tender & chewy on the inside. The meat was tender, but the texture was slightly mealy from the seasoning but still very good. The Empanadas were delicious. A 10 out of 5.. LoL! The server said some people are put off by the Argentinian ingredients, it was her favorite & I found nothing wrong with the flavor profile. However, the Brazilian one stole the show. The minute I cut into it I was overwhelmed by the smell of heaven.. Seriously, if heaven has a smell, it was this tiny empanada! It was too good to put into words, so youre just going to have to come experience it. Come. Eat! You wont regret it! I will be back to try their winter salad & then again for the ruben & i will have friends in tow. I 100% recommend this place. Our server was Coco & not only was she delightful but so knowledgeable about Holyoaks revitization & happenings. I truly enjoyed speaking with her.
