We went for dinner because we heard good things about this place and had family in from out of town. This place needs a new business model! We ordered appetizers and some drinks then sat to look at the menu. The apps were great but to order pizza I had to get back in line and wait to order. We wanted to order one gluten free pizza, and even though the dough is gluten free, the pizza is cooked in the same oven (not even on its own pan) with the other pizzas. So, it is cross contaminated with gluten products. This is not considered gluten free. My daughter has celiac disease so eating this pizza would have made her sick. Our pizza finally arrived and was under cooked, almost raw. Limp doughy mess. But since there is no wait staff, only runners, there is no one to talk too. We will NOT be returning. CJD read more

I like the vibe of this place, and the "Angry Bee Keeper" pizza was awesome. Prices could be lower though as you are paying $10-$12 for a small personal pizza, I easily ate the whole thing myself hence the 4 stars instead of 5. They have lots of craft beers on draft as well if you're into that. I ride a motorcycle and they have a designated spot up front by the door for motorcycle parking only, so that was cool. Great pizza and beer stop! Definitely plan on one pizza per person though, the thin crust makes for a pizza that goes fast and doesn't always fill you up! The roasted olives were very tasty and warm, but not pitted. I would order those again. I ordered a half salad to go and it was huge! Several portions. I wasn't sure if maybe they mistakenly gave me a large salad, but either way the Caesar salad was very good and comes with a piece of pita bread. I haven't gotten to try the head of cauliflower appetizer yet but have heard amazing things about it. My favorite pizza is the Angry Beekeeper with added jalapenos to make it extra angry!! Easily the best pizza in all of Dayton. Fresh crust and ingredients, original recipes and cooked in a brick oven over real fire. I go out of my way to eat here whenever able. Man oh man. I loved this place. It was super packed so we had to wait in line for a bit but that's no surprise because the food is so good here. I was able to try 3 different pizzas while I was there. First, the special which m had braised pork and peaches on it. We were iffy at first because none of us had ever tried peaches on pizza before but it turned out to be delicious and the peaches weren't too much. Pizza and beer? Pretty hard to beat any day. Just be prepared for family style seating. It's made of long picnic tables. You don't really have "personal" space here. I have made a vow to try every pizza joint in Dayton. I have had some good and some bad. Old Scratch is definitely ranks in the top. I love the 'Shroom pizza. I will eat almost anything with mushrooms on it, and this pizza fits the bill. I am always in the mood for a good salad, and the smoked bacon ranch salad always does it for me. I get the half, and I get A LOT of salad for my $6. The roasted cauliflower is also very tasty, even though it looks like it might not be. :-) Try it. You'll love it! read more

We went here for the first time last night - following a bad dinner elsewhere and not having eaten much- we decided to find pizza. We were SO happy with Old Scratch. First- we walked in at 10:45 when the kitchen closes at 11. This may not seem like much to some because "hey your open" but it means a lot when the attitude of those serving you is warm and come on in! Rather than a begrudging sure I guess. I'm sure some can relate to this. Next- the staff is friendly, personable, and just generally helpful. For ppl like us that hadn't been there before but also enjoy a little small talk, we felt right at home. Madison in particular was helpful and gave us exceptional service. The food- we ordered the shroom and the Brooklyn pizzas. Both were EXCELLENT. I have to comment in particular on their chicken sausage because it's seasoned very well but also it's crumbled so you don't have those large pieces of sausage to fall off your pizza. I realize some will hate this and find it a sin of pizza. To each their own :) just thought I'd mention it. read more

Unfortunately, the ran out of mushrooms, so the chef prepared us a brand new dish, never before sampled or prepared in this restaurant... sliced, smoked squash with pecans and ricotta... WOW! Old Scratch Pizza is a place that has great pizza taste from the Brick Oven, but is disastrously placed in a terrible location with a terrible ambiance. The Food: I think the Food is worth going to this restaurant - which is the most important piece of the puzzle. If you have good tasting, quality food, that will save the day. Ultimately, I enjoyed the pizza that I had here. It was a light, airy crust - with some tasty toppings. I would certainly recommend the pizza, and I will likely venture back to this restaurant. The Problems: Here's where we get into a problem, and here's where I would choose (another pizza place) everytime. 1. The location in downtown Dayton is poor. Just awful. If you had to pick a place where you would not want to open a restaurant, this would tick all the boxes. There's not much parking, it's in a desolate area which is not convenient to most of the clients they are targeting at this price point. 2. The building itself is WAY TOO LOUD. As you can see from some of the pictures that others took, it sets up like a warehouse. You can barely carry on a conversation in here with people at your table because of the noise. Let me differentiate - There's places that are noisy because they are "hoppin'" places and there's places that make you feel like you are in an over-crowded noise box. Old Scratch Pizza is the latter - it's not enjoyable, and therefore, detracts from the actual food itself. 3. The ordering Mechanism/Process is also dreadful. Instead of going in and taking a seat, you are forced to stand in a line, as if ordering a burrito or fast-food menu. It takes away from the elegance of the food you are about to be served and eat. 4. Price - A bit pricey for the entire experience. I do NOT mind paying a premium for quality food, but I think that the overall experience doesn't lend itself here to paying a premium for this food. Again, do not get me wrong here. The food is tasty, and that is this restaurant's saving grace. But everything else here actually brings the quality of the food down. WHERE DOES THIS STACK UP TO COMPETITION IN DAYTON The way I see it, there's two comparable tasting Pizza Places which take it's competition: BEAVERCREEK PIZZA DIVE PIES AND PINTS OVERALL ANALYSIS If I am going to go out for Pizza, I basically am going to choose between Old Scratch, Beavercreek Pizza Dive, or Pies and Pints. If I had to choose to spend my time and money in one of these three places, I would choose Pies and Pints each time. The reason is simple: Pies and Pints vs. Old Scratch Pizza - Location, Atmosphere, and Ambiance. The food quality is actually quite similar. What Pies and Pints has (That Old Scratch does not) is the best location. They are at The Greene. They are in a nice part of town where people want to visit. You can eat your pizza and drink a brew at Pies and Pints and then go walk around at The Greene and enjoy the Friday or Saturday evening music. This is Old Scratch's largest problem. They need to change locations and building. For now, if I am 'in the area' around downtown Dayton, I would certainly eat there. But I will not go out of my way to drive to Old Scratch Pizza's location - as I would to go to Pies and Pints. It's a shame, really. 8/11/2017 Update : In Response To Owner Who Commented Good day, and thank you for taking the time to respond. I just wanted to follow up with you, as I think it's helpful for restaurant owners' such as yourself, to have honest feedback. I want to strongly reiterate a couple of points: A. I do think your business has a good food product - which I have identified as the most fundamental and important part of a restaurant. Kudos for bringing a good tasting type of pizza from Italy, here to Dayton, OH. B. My mention of Pies and Pints and Beavercreek Pizza Dive are in my review because those are probably the two most comparable pizza places to yours in this area. The fact that yours is in the Top 3 is impressive in itself - and thus - worth a try for those who enjoy pizza. I want to state for the record, I have no affiliation to either place. C. The Differentiation - I have been to your building and I must say that you are speaking with an obvious owner's bias (which I understand). Your location is quite dreadful. Perhaps the City of Dayton offered some sort of tax incentive or something of the sort (which is Great that the City if trying to revitalize) but your space and building are not ideal. It could be much better and has the ability to have a "Magnificent" place, if you were in a better location, which a catered to the clientele you seek. When judging both Pies and Pints and Old Scratch Pizza, my dollars will go to Pies and Pints because of the following: - Not a family friendly place / Social place. - Out of the Way to Get to Keep in mind, college students at UD won't be here in 4 years.
