Update: Due to the owner's passive aggressive comment on MY personal review I give the place zero stars. The Caesar salad was good; however, in my opinion, you can't really mess up a salad. Old Scratch is exactly what Dayton needed. Chain pizza places are kinda gross in my opinion, so the Neapolitan-style pies were a welcomed change to the area. Super casual, order-at-the-counter spot with communal picnic bench seating. Pizza selection is super unique, the ingredients are always fresh, and I haven't had a bad pie yet. Angry Beekeeper is HIGHLY recommended. The bar is always serving up 15+ amazing in-season beers on tap, which is truly what makes this place my favorite. We feel so lucky to have this close by. My family has been gluten free for over 5 years since we found out our oldest son has an allergy. It is getting better out there in the gluten free world but one thing that always left us pining for gluten was pizza crust. Until now. This is the best gluten free pizza. Only one other, in Michigan, can compare but it was a deep dish style. This is real dough, assuming not pre bought but made in house, and cooked in their signature fire hot oven. Complete with a crunchy yet chewy "handle", crust bubbles, perfect slice fold-ability, char spots, and all. Laid back seat yourself atmosphere with a chill vibe. Price point seems to be right on for what you are getting. I always personally feel violated at the extreme up charge for gluten free pizza crust and there is no exception here except to say that it is actually worth it. Very worth it.The salads are done well. They are large, full of fresh ingredients, and simple. Nothing complicated. Just good salads. We love the roasted cauliflower appetizer as well as the roasted olives. I personally eat very low carb so I get a full salad for myself then we do a cauliflower appetizer with a side of hot pizza sauce and maybe the olives too. I'm so full that one (ok 2) slices of pizza is enough. The Shroom pizza and Mr.Scratch pizza are our favorite but classic pep mushroom is close behind. They do not skimp on topping offerings and they follow through by using fresh ingredients and topping the pizza adequately. I do wish they would have an option to top the roasted califlower with cheese and maybe even a topping or two. Plus an option to sub out the fresh bread that comes with salads and certain appetizers for gluten free pizza crust strips or something of that nature. read more

I came here with coworkers and ordered the Angry Bee Keeper and it was terrible. It smelled terrible and the sauce was not good. I can confidently say that this was the least appealing pizza I ever attempted to eat in my life. I took two bites and couldnt eat anymore. Great quality food. I can't recall when I've enjoyed a vegetable more than their roasted cauliflower, and really, cauliflower is typically low on my veggie list. I don't keep yelp on my phone, but I had to sing their praise today, I was so impressed. The pizza we got had some lady name, it had bacon and fresh mozzarella, onion jam and it was sooooo good, too. The crust is chewy and fresh like Pizanellos but a little thinner. I did not fine the toppings skimpy, and I found the pizza prices especially reasonable for the size. $20 wasn't bad to leave so stuffed with quality food. We will be back. I'm sorry Dayton but this place isn't as fantastic as you say it is. Love the ambiance and the location and the ovens but the pizza is just ok for artisan wood fired pizza. The much ballyhooed cauliflower was a mess for us. The first one they brought was so salty that it was inedible. The 2nd one was bland. I do wish it would have been better. Great place to have a beer and bring a group/family for a meal though. read more

The pizza is great, beer selection is excellent! Service at the bar is always awesome. Anytime they have a veggie special it's always worth trying! The salads are also fantastic, and I usually hate paying for salads but I always get one here! The Olympus salad is fab! Their special pizzas are always a hit, super inventive ingredients. Kids pizza is also great. We've had private events here as well and they're always super accommodating with fantastic service and reasonable prices.
