Old Town is the quintessential place for a small town breakfast feel. They have a great patio that overlooks the downtown hub of Auburn, and can provide a cool view of the courthouse as well. I've always been given exemplary service here, and the food is always delicious. You're not walking into a five-star restaurant with expensive dishes where you're expecting to be blown away, but if you expect that with breakfast, that's a problem. My family and I love coming to Old Town Grill! Food is amazing and the restaurant staff is super friendly!

Many of the buildings in the historic "old town" section of downtown Auburn, CA date from the California gold rush era of the early 1850's, but have been tastefully "modernized" and are in use. Add in the narrow streets, the steep hills, and the Sierra foothill ambiance... it's a magical experience, which will leave you both breathless and hungry. When you're hungry, you're in luck, as Old Town Grill is located in historic "old town" Auburn, and you couldn't wish for a better restaurant. You enter the restaurant from the patio, and you'll be greeted by super friendly Rachel, who welcomes you with a smile. The covered patio is protected from the elements by thick, clear plastic curtains, which help to shelter diners from the wind and rain. During warm weather, they are opened, which gives diners an amazing view of the historical section of downtown Auburn. On this March afternoon, although the temperature was mild, and in the low 60's, I was glad the blinds were in place. The dining room is very compact - may I say small? - and features a beer and wine bar, where there are several varieties of beer on tap. The dining room is "country" decor, which makes it very comfortable, cozy, and features lots of historical atmosphere. From the "Burgers" section of the lunch menu, I ordered the "Ortega Chile Burger." The menu describes the "Ortega Chile Burger" as, "1/2 lb Angus beef, topped with Ortega chilies and Swiss cheese." That's a very simple description for an amazing burger. All burgers come with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, dill pickle, along with a cup of garlic mayonnaise. There are many sides to choose from, including soup, salad, fries, sweet potato fries, fruit, chips or even onion rings, but I went the "middle route" and choice fries. The menu advertises the burger with Swiss cheese, which seems sort of odd for an "Ortega Chile Burger," and when Michelle asked me if I'd prefer another variety of cheese, I ordered pepper jack, which when combined with Ortega chili peppers... let's say that it added a little spice to my afternoon. The burger starts off with a half-pound Angus beef patty, cooked to your specification, in my case, since I'm a "joe average" kind of guy, is medium. The meat was cooked to perfection, in my case, medium, which made it juicy, tender, and cooked all around, as opposed to being crusty on the outside and pink on the inside, or just "blah," as you find in your favorite fast food restaurant. When it comes to meat, you get what you pay for, and Old Town Grill delivers a quality meat patty. If you want a burger, you need a bun, and the Angus meat patty was served on a fresh, sesame seed bun. I might add that Old Town Grill gives you the perfect balance of meat vs. bun, which is crucial to a great burger. Also, there was a layer of thick, pepper jack cheese, along with a ample layer of diced Ortega chili peppers, which gave the name to the burger, the "Ortega Chile Burger." Fresh garnishes included romaine lettuce, sliced tomato, onion and dill pickle, on the side, so you could assemble the burger your way. Say you don't like onion - what's wrong with you? - you could just leave them out. Aside from the "customization" qualities, I love burgers served this way, as the "hot" stuff is warm, and the "cold" stuff is cool, and when you assemble your burger, you get a taste sensation of hot and cold, which helps to make for a superior burger. Yes, I have had some experience in burgers of all, shapes, sizes and kinds, as a burger of any variety is one of my go-to foods of choice. Condiments on the side are two varieties of mustard, a cup of garlic mayonnaise, two varities of Tabasco sauce, and a quintessential bottle of ketchup. I applied Dijon mustard to the Angus beef patty, along with the garlic mayonnaise, and used some of the ketchup on the fries, and enjoyed. The fries were delicious, but nothing special. I can tell you they were perfectly golden brown on the outside, chewy tender inside, lightly season, and neither excessively salty - but you gotta have some salt on fries! - or greasy. Just plain good! The burger was absolutely perfect, as the meat was tender and juicy, the bun was fresh, the meat vs. bun ratio was perfect, and when the veggies and condiments were added, it made for a well-balanced burger, and an absolute burger-taste sensation! If my description sounds a bit "clinical," let me just state in plain English: This burger was simply amazing! If you're a lover of a fine burger, the "Ortega Chile Burger" at Old Town Grill is for you. You can't go wrong dining at Old Town Grill, as the food is amazing, the atmosphere is "49'er charming," and the staff are some of the friendliest in Placer County. If you dine outside on the spacious patio, you'll enjoy a breath-taking view of "old" Auburn, which will enhance your savory meal. Looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon... don't mind taking a drive to a lovely quaint western town? Auburn is quite adorable and well we happen to be hungry after Little Bit had lofty ideas for our water activities. However we didn't quite make the trek up to/down to *which ever way you want to look at it ={ * Sugar Pine Reservoir so it was my idea to grab something to eat before heading back to Sacramento. We originally were going to the ale house but it was packed so up the hill we made our way to this little diner sitting on top. Nice staff accomodating to us with our Tiny Bit. Menu is varied and we had both Lunch and Breakfast items in our order. It was hot as Hades outside so we opted to sit inside where there was plenty of seating. Although they had tables outside I felt like we would be uncomfortable and swelt. Note... inside may have been out of direct sunlight and heat but I don't think the air was working yesterday :( also there were a few flies that I had to swat and (eventually) kill - we sat by the window which made it easier for trapping AHA! Hollandaise was just fine, eggs nicely poached and the hash itself was the kind I like (almost as if it was scooped right out of the can) Reuben Sandwich *a LOT of Sauerkraut so be sure you are COMMITTED to Sauerkraut, corned beef was flavorful and the rye wasn't soggy. Great for seniors with smaller appetites as you can split a wonderfull sandwich and it's done in the kitchen so it comes out on two separate plates. They only charge a $2 split fee. We enjoy going for lunch and usually get there around 1:00 as it's less crowded. We avoid the restaurant on the weekends as it's always crowded and parking can be a real issue. I admire the efforts when it comes to scenery, but the food quality and playing a radio station with commercials really ruined our Sunday escaping the city to get out of town and enjoy our day, St Patrick's Day. The servers are working hard but you can see they've got a lot of tables and besides taking orders and serving food, they're also busing their own tables. They've got a heavy workload. Prices: so so. Not high and not low. Location: downtown Auburn on the Main Street. Parking can be hard to find so you may have to walk a bit of a distance but there a lot of cute stores to visit on the way to the restaurant. Overall, I probably won't visit Old Town Grill anymore. Up above Old Town Pizza sits the Old Town Grill; it's main entrance and outdoor seating under a roof that sticks out of the flat off-white building and where the white sign displays their name in red old-school font. Various string lights border the outdoors and leads you to a wooden door where the cozy interior sits. Inside is a tight space of a few tables to the left, one to the immediate right, and a fully stocked wooden bar sits to the back left. Orange light is calmly cast from dark orange lampshades and the outdoors through foggy class windows with their abbreviation etched in. A few sunflower bouquets, positive quote art, and other homey comforts line the white and wood-lined walls; making it feel like the living room of one's grandparents. With coffee ready to go, I perused the menu. Omelets and scrambles and pancakes other American comfort foods present themselves to customers. After a good while, I decided on the creamy scramble of eggs, chicken sausage, green onion, and cream cheese since it sounded interesting. All with a side of fruit, country potatoes, AND a pancake. A small wait would present a large oval plate with the eggs, fruit, and potatoes; and a separate regular rounded plate would house the pancake and pad of butter. Besides quantity, everything was nice and surprising in terms of quality and taste. The scramble was an interesting creamy, slightly sweet scramble brightened by the good bunch of green onions adding their flavor to the whole. The potatoes had just enough seasoning and crisp and the fruit was lovely. No nonsensical fruit syrup here. The pancake itself was sweetly vanilla 'n' puffy complemented by the sweet syrup and salty butter. There was nothing on my plate that I was dissatisfied with. The servers leaned more on the "get stuff done side of things" hashing out coffee, taking orders, and clearing plates while occasionally engaging with customers. Great up until they get nabbed by what is seemingly a longtime customer and chat on. So much so I had to interrupt for my check while sitting there like a dodo after some time. Not the worst, but not a place to be if you are in a rush. Overall, a good place to stop for breakfast in Auburn. While the coffee is jut fine, the food is quite good. Usually American food is all greasy, but this wasn't so. It gets a good 4 from me. read more

I thought this place was great, I paid with card and then left a generous cash tip BUT someone there decided my cash tip wasn't enough and decided to charge another $18.79 after I left and had signed my receipt with no credit card tip! My wife and I were recently entertaining out-of-state visitors and one of our stops was old town Auburn. We were walking by the Old Town Grill, decided it was time to eat and ended up trying this place for the first time. We were offered our choice of indoor or outdoor seating. As temperatures were mild, we opted for outdoors. Shortly thereafter, we were shown to our table on the narrow porch running by the right side of the main building. After pursuing the menu, we learned that this restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch only. We opted for lunch. I ordered a glass of red wine and a sparkling water. Finding no sparkling water was available, I tried the ice tea - it was very good. Next I requested a Hamburger with Cheese and no bun. It was served with taco chips and salsa. Taco chips were not really what I expected (or wanted) but the chips turned out to be very tasty ...... the salsa was OK. My wife ordered the Cobb Salad which she enjoyed.
