I took in 4 pairs of shoes and 1 was unable to be fixed (I expected this but asked anyway). I appreciate that he was honest about being unable to repair them. The other 3 pairs look great! The zipper that closed my favorite Dooney and Bourke purse got misaligned and stopped working. He looked at it and thoughtfully explained what he could do to try and fix it, but that some of the hardware was not standard- and he wasn't 100% sure he could fix it. He ended up being successful and the purse works exactly like new. I will definitely be returning with more repairs. Ok, dropped off some shoes that were in bad shape. The dress shoes needed a shine and one shoe had a water mark. Not only did Rogelio remove the water mark but he did an awesome job on the polish. I've taken 3 pairs of heels and a Coach purse in to Roger and every time he has impressed me! The purse took the cake. Just 3 months old and my handle broke. Coach wouldn't make the repair - they sent the purse back to me with an apology letter. Roger took his time with the repair and ordered special rivets. The first ten years I went to volunteer as a ranger in the Northern Nevada desert I wore those classic suede desert boots with the vulcanized, non replaceable soles sometimes called Schwarzkopfs for the US General that popularized them. They were comfortable, broke in easily and relatively inexpensive but after a while I noticed that I was buying, breaking in and walking the soles off of a pair a year. It seemed a shame to me that an upper that fit me and was comfortably broken in had to be thrown away because it couldn't be resoled so I decided to go big and buy a quality and relatively expensive desert boot with a last that allowed replacement of the soles at need. So I did so at roughly three times the cost of those Schwarzkopfs. Breaking them in was a stone bitch. I wasn't sure what would give first, the strangely square edged interior leather toe cap or the tops of my toes. Eventually the toes won out but I was left convinced that I never wanted to do THAT again. The new boots gave me excellent service until last year where the heel of the right boot actually came unsewn from the last. I took it to a series of "Shoe Repair" places but they were all the "maybe I can glue it on" kind of repair joints. I eventually stumbled across a place right near where I was living in Vista called Old Tuscon Cobbler. The minute I walked in I felt I'd found the right place. The space was crowded with a variety of specialized leather sewing machines, some with complex sole forms attached. It was the right place. The boots were repaired AND resoled for less than a pair of those older desert boots would have cost new and they actually fit better now as the cobbler sewed the uppers to a completely new last on both boots closer to the edge of the lasts which gave me a smidgen more room and eliminated a problem the boots had shown with trapping gravel between the last and the uppers. Very Cool. So, if you have that pair of shoes or boots that need repair I highly recommend this fellow's work. His name is Roger and he's the owner. His main business is custom making cowboy boots and those are really nice too. read more

Roger is one of the last in a dying profession. I simply went in to repair some snowboard boots for my son and was mesmerized by all his equipment and pride for his work. When I picked up my boots he took the time to show me around his shop and explained what equipment did what type of repair. Made me wish I lived in a time where craftsmen were the majority and not the minority. True, you can buy a new pair of shoes and throw away the old pair, but there is something about supporting a person who takes great pride in his work that makes things seem right in the world. Simply amazing. My wife had a very old pair of boots that she just loved, but the soles were literally breaking up. I promised to try and find a cobbler to replace the soles knowing full well that it might be impossible because they did not have a separate sewn-on last. I was not pleased with the first two cobblers I visited. I was convinced they could not solve the problem. But, when I got to Old Tucson, and talked to Roger, I knew I was in the right place. Just looking at the array of tools and specialized machines he has, plus the quality of his magnificent handmade cowboy boots, gave me a pretty good idea of his mastery. After talking to him for 10 minutes, I was sure that he could successfully complete this job if anyone could. He honestly told me that it would be a difficult fix, but that he thought he could do it. A week or so later, I returned to find the most excellent Vibram resole job I could ever imagine. I can't overemphasize what an excellent job he did. And, my wife was astonished that anyone could do such a great job. It was not cheap. It was not fast. But it was perfect, and that was what I wanted. Roger is a master craftsman. Last Wednesday, I took two pairs of character shoes in to this store to get some rubber soles put on so that I would be able to dance on stage without slipping all over the place. The owner of the store was very helpful, personable, and honest. He quoted that they would be done the following Tuesday, but to my surprise and delight they were done early and I picked them up Monday. He fixed them up exactly as I had wanted and when I tried them out last night, they were nothing short of perfect! He even cleaned up all the scuffs on my tan character shoes to make them look like new. I am so happy with the service I received and you can tell that he really takes pride in his work.
