As the name of the shop says, this is an old fashioned barber shop. The barbar chairs, I was told, date to the late 1920s. But this is not the main reason you have your hair cut. The service and the quality of the work was excellent. My barber was Eric, and he took care to give me a fine haircut. I also want to praise their efficient internet reservation system. Man.. I have to give it up for Old Tyme Barbers! I had tickets for Daryl Hall at Radio City. I figured, lemme have a cut out day and just chill. Shoe Shine, Hot Towel shave and dinner before going to Radio City sounds about right for this gentleman. I made an appointment on line with Fred. (My father in laws name) Walking from Grand Central to the barber shop was easy peasy! Once inside, they are playing the weirdest music. I mean, I'm old and not looking for Sinatra but this was music from a slasher film! Haha Fred introduces himself and gets the shave party started. Now I must point out, it's 90+ degrees outside. Some people might find this relaxing but Fred covered my entire head with a hot towel. I had to correct the situation and not have my breathing obstructed. Once I gave Fred new marching orders, it was all business. I asked Fred to also clean up the back of my neck. He did such a fantastic job, he even gave me a mini trim around my ears. I said Fred, you're a miracle worker, now make me younger! He laughed at the joke. The end result, I'm looking pretty slick! Guys, you need this for yourself! Would not recommend this place, my last haircut here felt very rushed - which indeed, it was. One side of my fade was completely longer and uneven from the other side. One side was trimmed out way too thin. Somehow a piece of the hair from the top of my hair that is longer also got cut to the length of the sides, and now sticks out because it doesn't lay properly in either direction. I had an appointment today at 8 AM for a cut and shave (60 minute procedure). The train was having signal problems, so I ended up being 20 minutes late. I had an appointment with Tori, and he told me that since I was late, he could not see me. All I really needed was a beard trim (a 30 minute procedure), so I asked just for that. He literally said, "you don't want me doing that, I just cut myself today." And told me he had later appointments, so he didn't want to rush the 30 minute procedure into a 40 minute window. Mind you, he was literally sitting in a chair, reading. I checked online, and, wouldn't you know, he had a 9AM available to be booked. So, either he just can't do beards, he lied about being busy, or both. Just not going back anymore. With the many barber shops around, I wouldn't risk going here if you have something important that day. read more

A one stop man shop. Cut, shave, and shoe shine all available. Some barber shops just have the "it" factor when you step in the door, and OTB definitely has "it." They will spend up to an hour perfecting your hair with painstaking attention to detail. Fred worked with me to achieve the look I wanted within two or three cuts. I've now been a client of his for about half a year. I particularly appreciate the effort he puts into each cut as well as trying out and recommending new products. I've been to Old Tyme Barbers several times. I've only had my hair cut by Szilvia and she is awesome. I like my hair short on the sides and tapered in the back and she does it perfectly every time. She always finishes by shaving my neck with a blade and lining me up. She uses a combo of scissors and clippers and does a great job. Came in on a Friday afternoon feeling a bit skeptical about this shop, but was I in for a surprise! Joe gave me a warm welcome made me feel welcome with all his humor & jokes, he even put on a song for me on the radio that corresponed to my name ("Eli is coming by Three Dog Night") told me that the song should be my entrance tune when I visit clients, LOL! Haircut was exactly as I had expected, price was very good as well. Five stars for Fred and Matthew. I would follow either of them anywhere. However, Matthew is leaving next month to open his own shop, and Fred has been on a break, and honestly I give zero stars to the shop owner. Seems he's the one who wrote a message on their chalkboard yesterday along the lines of: "We are neutral on Bill Cosby, and opinionated on everything else." I don't really understand what is supposed to be clever or funny about tolerating sexual assault. The owner isn't always there, but when he has been I've heard him make misogynist and transphobic comments, so this chalkboard was no surprise. This is a great no-frills, but exceptional service barber shop. Fred (@jedimasterbarber) is awesome! For about $30 (which is a great value considering the crap job most barbers/stylists do in manhattan for that price) I got the best cut I've had in years and Fred even took a straight razor to my neck. I've gotten my haircut here 3 times. The first two times were great, I'm not sure what the guys name is, but he's the hipster guy with tattoos. My experience with him with excellent. I just got my hair cut by "the boss". This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Not only was he a smartass about everything, (I'm usually okay with the joking smart ass comments, but these were just annoying), but he literally spent a little under 10 minutes cutting my hair. I told him I didn't want my beard touched, but I asked him to touch my sideburns with the razor, (which every single barber I've been to does for no extra charge), he refused. When I get a haircut, I want to leave the barber looking sharp. Just because I'm not getting my beard touched doesn't mean my sideburns should look shitty. I paid a walk-in visit to Olde Tyme Barbers today to get a shave during my lunch break. Fred took care of me, as chance would have it, and all the luckier for me. He started off by whipping my neckline into shape--then he began his ritual. I call it that because what Fred pulled off was nothing short of magic. Within the span of half an hour, he prepared my face with a ready stock of oils and unguents, laid hot towels on it, and gave me a good once over with a straight razor, all while carrying on easy conversation. Afterward, he rubbed on more salves and applied both hot and cold towels. The final result was that my face, which had never before known the touch of a straight razor, left with a decent shave and little irritation (all with plenty of time left on my break!). I consider that a ringing success, especially given how rough my results can be at home. I would recommend this place, and especially Fred, to any man who needs grooming near Grand Central. read more

I was a walk-in on Monday after work, at around 5:20, and felt like I was a rushed job. I'd read on their website that during your first visit here, they like to have a consultation with you, to properly discuss what you want. Maybe because they were busy, they didn't have the time for this with me? I was in and out in 15 minutes, and got a very average haircut, for an above average price. $33 plus tip, and the cut and experience felt the same as any $15 rushed place I'd usually go to. read more

Nice enough somewhat upscale barbershop. Several barber chairs, but since I was there on a Saturday, only one barber - Fred - was working. He did an excellent job (need to wait a few days to confirm) and had a few old school flourishes. They try to pamper you a bit with hot towels, etc. But the shop is not cheap - a buzz cut was $25 and it goes up from there. I will go back, the extras are worth the few bucks more. I got my haircut by James Bello at Olde Tyme Barbers and it was one of the best experiences I've had at a barbershop. The customer service was out of this world. James is one of those barbers that actually listens to your requests and knew exactly how I wanted my haircut.
