Wellllll...after all the hype I've heard about this place since I've been living here I finally had the opportunity to try it. I was pretty excited as I hear the line is usually a mile long, but I got there later in the day and didn't have to wait too long. The bread is what people say is really different, but all it was was under cooked and still a bit doughy. Good, but not an awe inspiring french bread by any measure. Call me a po-boy snob, but this place was lacking. I did the half and half with shrimp and oysters. It was good, but nothing above your ordinary. In addition, seating is limited which I don't mind, but I can see it being a problem when they get as busy as I hear. Also, if you need condiments and things after you get your food you will be waiting for a while to get it. Staff was courteous. I'd stop in for a po-boy again, but I wouldn't brag about it or wait in a long line. read more

This was the best Po' Boy I ever had. I had the sausage po boy and my wife went with the shrimp. We sat in our car outside at 10:30AM and ate them while it rained like the giant, bloated, ill-mannered fat b**ch-boobied pig that I am. Both were awesome but the shrimp was better. To outsiders, this place may look like a hole in the wall, but to the locals, Olde Tyme Grocery is a staple and a Lafayette tradition that you hand down to your children. I have had Po-Boys all over the country and you will not find any better than OTG. The place reminds me of an old-time wooden floor grocery store that used to be all over south Louisiana.  I recommend the fried shrimp dressed out. Lunchtime can be a little crowded and confusing, but trust me with all the chaos OTG will get your order right. They also serve small PO-boys on large platters for parties too. Cool vibe, good food. We had a 1/2 shrimp poor boy & 1/2 oyster poor boy. Both were delicious. They seemed bigger than 6 inches each. The batter used was crunchy. Not too many extra dressings, just a little tomato, lettuce & mayo; good stuff!. We did use extra seasoning on the poor boys but saltier is a personal preference. *Cash or check only* They have an ATM but of course there's a charge. One of the best shrimp po-boys I've had in a long time. I can honestly say that because I've had a lot of them- all the time. A friend suggested this place and parking was frankly tough. As I understand it, this is an institution and walking distance from ULL. The bread is soft- the sandwiches huge and I so loved that they served abita root beer by the bottle that it wasn't before I was a quarter into it that I remembered I don't like root beer! The front end where you order and pay houses the kitchen and a mini store. The back end has the quaint tables and patio- all in all adorable and worth every cent. read more

I used to go to this place religiously during my days in college, since it's right on campus. Who can pass up a nice fried shrimp po' boy? If you haven't tried it yet, try the Old Tyme special!! This is my favorite poboy shop in Lafayette! Very informal, with a steady stream of customers. I would recommend visiting at an off hour--- like 2pm or 4pm if you don't want a long wait. Important to note -- cash ONLY. There is also a cute, very affordable snowball stand right behind the restaurant. My only pet peeve about this place is the never ending trail of cats that consistently join you for your meal if you eat outside. The fried shrimp poboy is my absolute favorite. Great bread with nice balance of fried shrimp. My husband had the soft shell crab poboy- a special that day. He said it was excellent. Great spot to visit. read more

Just moved here and had our first Louisiana po-boy at this little place. People behind the counter were helpful, as it was our first time and a little intimidating with "grocery" items everywhere when you first walk in. It was a nice night, so we sat on the patio with white lights strung above. The shrimp po-boy was as delicious as everyone (including the workers) said. Perfectly fried- great texture and sauce. Best Poboy in the World.. Or so I've heard. The GF was showing me where she grew up and said this is the jewel of the city so we stopped by. It's across from UL and parking is limited so you may need to park across the street. There was no A/C or radio, but the student workers were singing Disney songs in the kitchen so they kept the experience enjoyable. We ordered 4 shrimp poboys and it only took a few minutes for us to get the order. 2 for us, and 2 to-go for her parents. The poboys were so delicious that I wanted to eat the orders we got for her parents.. But being the gentleman that I am.. I had to keep my composure in hopes that they would've eaten something else at home so I can devour 2 more poboy sandwiches... Unfortunately they didn't so I only got to eat my lone sandwich. The food here is amazing. You will NOT find a better shrip po-boy anywhere. I would believe it if you told me that Mitch Hedberg wrote his "huge sandwich" joke about this place. While other places skimp on sandwich contents, I find myself removing meat from my sandwich, more often than not. One thing that DOES deter me from going, more often than not, is the fact that they still do not accept credit cards. I never carry cash, so I never visit Old Tyme on a whim, or if I am passing by. I know this is a "first world problem," but it really does take away from the amazing product these people put out. read more

Olde Tyme grocery is a Lafayette staple probably only because it's been around for a while and it's location. I would never recommend this place. I've been several times and the employees are rude and not accommodating. Last time I went my order was wrong so I confronted the cashier. The manager on duty came to see what the problem was and rolled his eyes at me and was rude when talking to me and seemed very bothered. Also, while visiting Murphy's snowball stand (the snowball stand behind Olde Tyme) the back door to Olde Tyme was left open and you could see directly into the kitchen. The kitchen was absolutely disgusting and covered in slop. The amount of food on the ground was concerning. As someone who has worked in the food industry for six years I have never seen something like that. So if you are into rude customer service and food from a dirty restaurant, than this is the place for you! If you are from New Orleans you will definitely be disappointed in their "etoufee" and the fact they pull out the middle part of the bread. read more

Four of us stopped here for lunch last Friday! It's a quaint little place with a big local and out of town following. Reminded me of Parkway Tavern in NOLA. We ordered a variety of seafood po-boys, shrimp, oyster and crawfish. Everyone liked their meals and the fries were great too. Oysters were cooked perfectly, the french bread is soft, unlike the typical NOLA po-boy, so it's easier to eat. Depends on what you prefer, we are hooked on NOLA type bread, but this was good. There is limited seating indoors and the walls are filled with memorabilia to keep you occupied while eating! There is an abundance of outdoor seating which is great for now, but will be quite hot in the summer. We sat next to people from Texas that were touring on their motorcycles. The place seems popular with the college crowd (it's near UL) and with tourists. The cons are CASH only or check. Single stall bathroom and limited seating. Would I go back? Sure ! Oh, grab a snowball on your way out...they have a snowball stand that serves the biggest "small" size we had ever seen for $1! read more

There's a lot of shouting going on in the kitchen, but don't worry you'll get your food if you stay seated. The poboys here are great! The management should be fired! I held off for some time on writing this review bc Old Tyme is a Lafayette staple but they have failed to move along with the times. The ordering, payment and getting your food process is a complete nightmare. Often you arrive to pickup you sandwich and the sandwich is not ready. If you decide to pay first while you wait for your sandwich you somehow get pushed to the side and are left waiting and waiting and waiting. This place is run by a bunch of college kids and they need oversight. Very disappointing. read more

Shop is hard to find, coz it's in a corner and it's really small. Looks like a residential type of house. It's a small place, half a grocery-like area, and half is seating area, they have a little outdoor seating, but it was christmas time, so it was really cold to sit outside. Its like a find your own seating, and the place is small, so you just have to do a first come first serve or grab a seat when you can kind of arrangement. Their Shrimp sandwich was rather good, but do not order their olde tyme special sandwich, I think it just taste like any other sandwich, like subway. If you go there, order their shrimp sandwich. Never disappoints!! I've been talking this place up to my friends and family for years and finally had a chance to return this past Christmas with my in-laws who live in Florida. We each got different sandwiches and everyone was in hog-heaven! My fried shrimp lived up to the flavor I experience in my dreams; the corned beef with brown gravy kept my mother-in-law happy all day; my father-in-law's turkey special left him in awe, and my wife's sausage was just as tasty as the rest (although she felt like it was a bit salty, it's a traditional Louisiana hot link and super-good). One of the many perks of being a ULL Ragin' Cajun! In my time as a USL/ULL student, I've probably put enough of these tasty po-boys down to choke a donkey. While I was never fond of the crawfish po-boy here every other one I've had (shrimp, oyster, meatball, OT special) was special. Especially the shrimp...they just pile 'em on here. Several different hot sauces too (if you're into that sorta thing). They also have a nice selection of cold beers to go along with your po-boy. Call ahead if you're in a hurry and if you're gonna eat here on a Friday during lent season, have one of those beers I was talking about b/c you're gonna wait a little while.
