Some of the best poboys (I mean, "poor boys") you'll find in Louisiana. A half poboy is more than adequate and stuffed with shrimp/oysters/meat. Order at the counter, pay cash, crack open a beer and relax until your order comes out. You won't be disappointed. I also recommend going during lent (from Mardi Gras to Easter) as they have a specialty poboy every day. Crawfish tail on Friday is the big seller. One thing to note, though, is that sometimes they don't change the oil out as often as they should. Once ordered a crawfish tail poboy and the crawfish were very dark and burnt tasting. They should definitely keep fresh oil. That's the only complaint though. read more

Friday special: seafood platter and catfish poboys. Seafood platters are a wait (I waited over 15 min for my order), dear yelpers. This platter had enough food to share: Completely packed with perfectly seasoned battered fried catfish, oysters, and shrimp, over a large bed of fried wedge potatoes (in desperate need of seasoned salt here). A healthy serving of delicious jambalaya (NOTE: BEST JAMBALAYA EVER!!!), and an underwhelming small side salad (just shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and a splash of Italian dressing), which actually ended up being a welcome compliment to all the fried food. Also note: The best tasting fried oysters I've ever had in my entire life! Lunchtime is packed, but the line moves fast, and the friendly and efficient staff keep it all moving along. Limited dining/seating area, even outside. Note: Cash only, but there's a little ATM on-site. Please note for takeout orders: No condiments to go, besides ketchup. Also, I feel compelled to mention: I'm still riding around on the knee scooter (foot surgery), and there's a considerable step ledge to the dining area (and entrance) -- plus with very limited store/restaurant space, this definitely wouldn't be ideal for someone in a wheelchair or people with strollers. Also, leave your kiddos at home. All the chips, candy, and goodies on display at eye level with children, plus being all cramped with lines of people with nothing else to do = disaster. Example: I caught my 3 year old toddler trying to swipe a blowpop (after I told her "no," by hiding it in her pants!!! ) This place isn't fancy and probably more of a locals place, but despite it's "issues": Lack of seating, lack of handicap access (ramps to the dining area), and crowds, I have to say: It's totally worth it for an unpretentious quick bite of fresh seafood or yummy poboy. read more

I know all the locals LOVE Old Tyme, so I figured I had to try it. I went there for lunch with a coworker to check it out, and got half a turkey po-boy. It was.... meh. I pretty much showered it with Tony's because it lacked a lot of flavor. But the portion was huge which I liked. My coworker got a fried shrimp po-boy, and that was really good. I don't even like fried stuff (I'm from Seattle, not a southern native haha) but I am definitely ordering that when I come back because there's something about it that's different than any other fried thing i've had. So, first off, they only accept cash...super annoying. Luckily, there is an ATM inside for a hefty fee which all around just makes you want to leave and go somewhere else. I've been multiple times and every time has been a "meh" experience. I've gotten the roast beef poboy and the meatball poboy. Their roast beef poboy--so boring and the slices of roast beef are far too big for your mouth. It just has a "blah" taste--nothing like a real New Orleans style poboy. Then there's the meatball poboy, did a to-go order and once I got back to my house, I noticed the meatball was slightly undercooked...needless to say, I threw it away. Many local people love it. My first REAL Po Boy Experience was had here(circa 1993). All i can say is OMG. These are THE BEST Po Boy's to be had. Why do i always order the half and then wish i had ordered the WHOLE. They are so delicious. My fave is the half/half(shrimp/oyster). First things first, the bread they use is like no other i've tasted. They stuff it with very fresh tasting shrimp and oysters, that aren't cooked until they taste like rubber. A little lettuce and tomato and their remoulade, a few dashes of tabasco....HEAVEN!! When we travel to Georgia to visit family, we always factor in our stop in Lafayette for a Po Boy from Olde Tyme. The students are so lucky to have this so close to the campus! read more

We really enjoyed eating at what amounted to a convenience store with a bar and deli attached to it. Felt so homey. Hubs got the shrimp/oyster po'boy for $14-$15, which I think is a bit on the higher end, but it was decent. Nothing mind blowing, but keep in mind that I don't find deep fried protein slathered with mayo and wrapped in bread all that appealing. (I know, there is something deeply wrong with me). Hubs really enjoyed it. Said that the shrimp in particular was fried perfectly. Service was very friendly, and they allowed us free refills. As New Orleanian, I consider myself a poboy aficionado. And Old Tyme's shrimp surely ranks up there - definitely top tier! Sandwich was absolutely packed with plump shrimp coated in crisp golden batter - an amazing value for less than $10. I do think they lathered on the mayo a little too heavily, but the great shrimp quality and flavor certainly makes up for that. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars was their sad french fries - huge portion for $2, but flavorless, a little soggy, and definitely in need of salt. I used to come here all the time in college and recently stopped in for the first time in a long time. Little has changed in the past 10 years. The po-boys are awesome. I highly recommend the fried shrimp po-boy. It's the po-boy I judge all other shrimp p-boys off of. I don't think I have ever been more satisfied with a po'boy in my life. When you order one in this day in age you get a few fried nuggets on some bread with some version of aioli a bunch of lettuce and some largely cut tomatoes for filler. Well that is not the case if you go down to Old Tyme Grocery. Ordered two whole Half and Halfs (Oysters / Shrimp). It is served on a very large 12+ inch piece of freshly baked bread. When it comes to you, the Oysters are on one side of the sandwich, the shrimp on the other, you can open it up and mix them together if you wish based on personal preference. There were 11 big fat juicy oysters on this bad boy perfectly cooked. As many or more large gulf shrimp were on the other side. They serve theirs with a cocktail sauce and a small amount of vegetables so as not to mess up the seafood experience. It is massive, and tasty. Best Po'boy in my life to date, will stop through on future treks to Houston. I still believe Lafayette has some of the best food in this country. As one Lafayette waitress told my mother years back, "Our food is so good because, look around, we have nothing else to do around here." read more

Very cheap prices. Food is pretty quick and you take it outside and eat. Plenty of outdoor seating but it gets crowded. I got the shrimp poboy which apparently is what you are supposed to get. It very well could have been my favorite shrimp poboy ever. I personally like less crispy french bread and this one was not crispy at all so i really liked the bread too. Which to pick? So many poboys, but only time for one. I went with a half Old Tyme special (ham, roast beef and turkey I think) and fries. Came to around $10... Not too bad. Then it came out, holy value meal Batman. It was huge and plenty of fries for two. The bread was missing that 'crunch' I've come to expect, but all the flavors were there. Good outdoor space to boot. Jackpot! This place was delicious!! The po-boys are huge. We ordered a shrimp po-boy and a catfish special po-boy and could only eat one. On a road trip, my boyfriend and I found this place by using Yelp and we were not disappointed. It is worth the short drive from the highway. I'd drive to Lafayette just to have another po-boy or anything else off of their menu. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled when trying to find it. It is very small and at the corner. We almost missed it, but were able to pull into a small parking spot at the end. I can't say enough about this place....it is a MUST go! Only tip I have is that they are cash only. If you don't have cash, they have a small ATM type machine at the bar. You swipe your card and select your amount and it gives you a reciept. You then take that to the cashier and they will give you the cash. It was different, but still super easy. read more
