This is a review about Lily, the owner, and her crappy costumer service. I already had a bad experience with her a long time ago, but thought "oh how bad can it be..." to just have her cut it instead of requesting for another barber. Nope, I'm wrong. When I sat down, she asked me what number I wanted on my sides, and I said 1. Then, she asked if I wanted the fade higher or lower. To answer her question, I pulled out my phone and showed her a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like. Not only did she not look at the picture, she turned my chair towards the mirror and said "no stop, look at the mirror. Do you want a high fade or a low fade?" I crap you not, these are her words... and at that point I was going to stand up and request for another barber because of her rude she is. I didn't do that, and decided that maybe I was just overthinking it. Nope, I was wrong again-- her inability to understand costumer service made my blood boil. As she was cutting my hair, she didn't ask if I wanted to keep my sideburns or cut it... so now, the sideburns I usually have connected to my beard... has a two inch gap... nice! Plus my hair looks nothing like what I wanted b/c Lily thought it would be a good idea to not do what her client wants. Sigh... The worst part? My haircut was done in 7-8 minutes. The other lady who started cutting another person's hair did not even finish her client yet, and she started 10 minutes before. I have never thought about not tipping the barber, but today, I was so close to not tipping. This is the worst haircut experience ever. TLDR: The other ladies are nice and do a decent job with haircuts, asking you what you want, and taking their time. Lily, on the other hand, does none of those. Don't believe me? They have no idea how to do a haircut. They can barely speak English and they can't even clearly communicate. The highest razor setting they have is a 3. My barber does a 5. I've been to this barbershop a few times, and the first 3-4 times I got what I payed for ($10 w/ student ID)-- an average, but decent haircut. Although on my last visit, the man (can't refer to him as a barber) completely ruined my hair. I had let it grow for a few weeks with plan of getting a nice cut and was very disappointed with the results. The worst part is I showed the guy a couple pictures with different angles of a cut/style I had done a few months back from my barber back home in LA, yet he still managed to f*** my s*** up! I complained to Lily and she tried explaining to him what I wanted but by then my hair was all over the ground. Lily is great though, she cut my sons hair and he loved it. He loved having all the toys to play with and the lollipop treat at the end. I've received haircuts from the 3 ladies working the shop, and they all did an acceptable job. Just like Chan S. below, I gave this place two tries... and the second time was probably the worst haircut I've ever had... (and I've had a good share of horrendous haircuts). Right after I explained to her exactly how I wanted my hair cut and showed her an example picture, she said to her coworkers in Vietnamese, "I don't know why this guy wants this..." It's simple: I didn't. I asked to *fade* the side and not to cut anything off the top. Instead, she buzzed a 1 all the way up to the corner of my head. I damn near came out looking like Macklemore... except uglier (who knew it was possible..?). The other thing that really gets me is that she had the audacity to tell me she faded it. Smdh. I gave this place two tries. After the first time, I should have backed off. I asked her to cut my sides with a 1 and keep the top. A simple fade. She did exactly what I said, but instead of going straight up, she went inside. So my hair was super short in the back. After that, she tried to line me up and totally messes that up. The left side of my forehead had like an extra inch of cut hair. She rushed the hair cut even though no one was there! The second time I went, same situation. I mentioned to her the last time she cut my hair and she said okay I remember you. I told her I want the fade to be straight up and not curved in. SAME RESULT. F***s up my hair line, thins my hair out without asking and just plain messes my hair up. She could tell by the look on my face I was disappointed. So she tells me, this is a normal hair cut... I'm like what do you mean this is a normal hair cut. You can't expect to give everyone the same hair cut and expect it to look good on every single person. It seems like if she doesn't like you, she'll rush you and she'll talk down to you. Many of you may not notice it, but she does it. Yes it's cheap. Yes it's quick. But I'm sure for many guys, their hair pretty important. So if you want to run the risk of getting a messed up cut go here and pay the low price. If not, I would look elsewhere. read more

Fantastic service. The staff really takes care of you, taking their sweet time as they converse with you and staying way past closing hours to take in one last client (me). It isn't the prettiest looking environment but the way the staff interacts with each and every client is an experience that has yet to be replicated. A regular razor cut for men is $14 and includes a straight razor & warm shaving cream neck touch-up. Lily also mentioned that she's considering offering a student discount. I usually get my hair cut by my friend but he's been busy lately so I came here to get my hair cut. They recently changed owners since before I was a bit wary about coming in but after talking with Lily, who was cutting my hair, who is friendly and nice, I am definitely coming back. My haircut is simple: 8 on top, 0 all around with a fade. She did a really good fade and she also shaved the back of my neck with a straight edge razor after the haircut. It's $14 for a men's haircut and $10 if you are a student. Great place to go if you are a student. There is a small parking lot but since I live nearby, I just walked there. This is a great place place to get a haircut. Prior to moving to Davis I lived in Sacramento and went to an excellent barbershop there that was always packed. I decided it wasn't worth a 2 hour wait and a drive to Sac, so I decided to try Olive Drive Barbershop in Davis. Glad to say I got the same quality haircut for an excellent price at a location much closer to my home. Lily is a great barber and I enjoyed the conversation as well. She has the shop set up with plants and a little fountain and I felt at home very quickly. In addition, the hot shave around the neck and sideburns was great touch. I will come back here for my next haircut and highly recommend this barbershop to anyone looking for a high quality affordable haircut in Davis. read more

I had burned out on LOOONG waits at my Sacramento barber, and happened to be in desperate need of a trim (prior to a big week at work). On a weekend trip to Davis, I Yelp'd barbers to see whether there were any that would be convenient and available for a short-notice drop-in. Olive Drive Barber Shop is great; well worth the 20-minute drive from Sacramento, and I will definitely go back again. My cut is exactly as I had described it to Lily, and the cost is completely reasonable. I recommend ODBS. read more

I usually have a hard time finding a person who could cut my hair well, because it's a little long. However, after meeting Lily today and getting a haircut, I'm very happy with the results! Lily was very nice and extremely talented. She new what to do with my long and messy hair, and it only took her about 10 minutes! Been coming here for six months now. Tried Motown and Razor's Edge, they were good but always had to wait at least an hour even when I came first thing in the AM. The longest wait that I have had here was 10 minutes. Wife compliments the job that they do, which is really all that I can ask for since she has to look at it and I don't. read more

I asked the lady for a formal haircut; short on the sides but long on the top. Even showed a picture of an idea of what I wanted. She barely glimpse at the picture and was more concerned to cut my hair as fast as possible even though there was no line at all. The haircut was too short. First time coming here and it wasn't bad. After reading a few reviews I decide to take a chance. I got my haircut by Nathan I believe that was his name. Nice and friendly guy. As far as the cut goes it wasn't exactly the perfect cut but it looks better than before. I just wish it was blended/faded a bit better. Also they only take cash. He did take his time maybe one the longest cuts I have had before. If I got the haircut at the student price of ten bucks rather than full price I wouldn't be complaining. This place is my go to barbershop. I mean I honestly hate going anywhere else but this place. I began coming to this place because they offered the $10 student price, I still come back even though I don't get the discount anymore. Lily and her daughter are always consistent with their haircuts and they are always so friendly and welcoming. At the end of your cut it is quiet a treat to get a straight-edge shave on the neck. Thick Asian hair checking in. I've had my hair cut here by Lily and the guy that works here (never asked his name). For me this is a good value barber - come here if you want something simple, fast, and doesn't cost too much. You won't come out looking like a million bucks but you can still come out looking like ten thousand bucks. The people here are friendly and it's a very convenient place for me to get my hair cut. Only criticism is that the few times I've asked for a fade I just got a regular buzz on the side, but I guess for $10 and a line of people waiting to get their hair cut I can't have it all. But overall a great business, and I'd definitely recommend this place to other Davis students who are looking for a simple haircut with a good deal. read more

The only redeeming quality about this place is that it's $14 if you're a student. Every single time I've come here, they've cut my hair unevenly. Sometimes they fail to pay attention and cut way more than I asked. Their fades are 50/50. Sometimes they'll turn out just fine or some days they just don't really feel like it and they give you "f*ck my sh*t up fam" where it's not a fade at all and it grows out like sh*t. You do not face a mirror most of the time so you can't tell them to stop cutting if it gets too short. When the barbers start talking to each other, it's basically a guarantee they're going to mess up your hair because they stop paying attention and focus on talking instead. read more

I was in town this weekend for an event and found Olive Drive on Yelp. Walked over, and Ben greeted me, had me have a seat. 5 minute wait Saturday morning. My hair is on the thin side, and easy to butcher. I'm always nervous going into a new place. Ben did a great job doing what I wanted...#2 close on the sides, a bit longer on the top, razor shave the back of my neck. Very happy with the result, just wish it wasn't a 2 hour drive from home or I'd be a regular. I always get my haircut by Lily because she knows what haircut I want once I get there and cuts my hair just right. The service is fast and cheap. Gets the job done for the price, but they have left unclipped lines on my head when I get a fade from them on numerous occasions. I request them to fix it and it looks the same, I end up going to my house and getting rid of the lines myself (which you shouldn't have to do if you are paying for this service). When Tram cuts my hair, I ask for a fade or taper and get an undercut regardless. Lily is good at cutting hair which is why I am giving two stars instead of one. read more

My favorite new barber shop. I have gone to the barber my whole life and now as an adult I take my son with me. I am very picky about my barber and I was reluctant to try the Olive Drive Barber Shop since Davis has so many good barbers. Not only did my son and I receive awesome haircuts but there was no wait and it was 25% cheaper then any other barber in town (plus In&Out is across the street for lunch). Another bonus is this barber shop is also open 7 days a week. I am happy we found this gem of a barber shop and I look forward to our new father son ritual of getting a haircut and a burger. read more

I've been getting my haircut here for 3 years. Tran has always done a great job with my hair and trimming. I was always was happy paying $14 and tipping $2. I went in a few weeks ago and got my cut as usual then was told the price went from $14 to 18. Well that's to big of an increase so off I go to Great clips now for the $11 dollar hair cut after a coupon. Not as nice of a cut but that price increase was too much for this Non student. 5 stars if not for the price increase. Maybe they're trying to get by on the numerous student cuts they have. i have been going to this place for about a year now even since i came to davis. i used to cut my hair because it was cheaper and i thought i could do a fine job. She offers a student special so i was like what the heck might as well give it a shot. I love this place i have done a couple different hair cuts and she nails it every time. She is friendly and the place is very clean as compared to some other places. I almost never have a wait time probably because i go at non busy hours. I hate to say this but I think Lily, the owner, is hating on college students. Basically I went in to the shop and was called by Lily to take a seat. Then she proceed to ask me for the number on the sides and i said 2. Now this is all standard procedure but when i proceeded to give her some more details on the type of haircut I want she just gave me a "annoyed" stare and said ok. LOOK HERE LILY IM PAYING YOU TO GIVE ME A HAIRCUT SO YOU BETTER DO A GOOD JOB. sadly she just buzzed and buzzed and finished my haircut in around 8 minutes...sigh the level of service here has really gone down. I have been to this place five times before and received a haircut from three of the ladies in the shop. The first three haircuts was okay as I only asked five on the top and 1 on the sides. The fourth one I asked for just a trim on the sides and it was good. The fourth one is the time I started growing my hair. The fifth time I had my top hair grown out and I asked for the older lady to trim the sides and it resulted for me to look like a pineapple. I let it go because I asked it to be trimmed and possibly my mistake as not using the proper term which is fade or taper. This last haircut was two and a half years ago. I have a friend that cuts my hair but I just did not want to bother him today thus I decided to get a haircut from Lily's Shop again after a bad experience from two and a half years ago because one its cheap two we are basically neighbors as I live in Olive Drive and pass by the shop all the time so it is very convenient. I was called by Lily if I was ready. She asked me what type of haircut I want and I said if she could fade the sides. Then I tried to take my cellphone out and show Lily a picture of the type of haircut I wanted which is an undercut with fade on the sides. The problem is that she did not even bother to look at it and just ignored it so I was thinking she knows exactly what she is going to do. She then asked for a number I said 2. She asked to cut to the top on the line. I said yes. I have my hair tied I was about to take it off and she said keep it tied. This is one of the reason I do think she knows how to cut my hair. The other problem is that while she was cutting my hair I was facing towards outside and could not see what is going on. Basically the mirror is behind me. Three minutes later the sides are cut and she showed it to me. Then she asked how I want the top cut. This time I realize why I did not go back here to get my haircut two and half years ago. I looked like that same pineapple from the last haircut I got. I was thinking I used the proper terms which is fade. No fade was seen. On top of it all I have a similar experience with Chan S. and I was thinking at first it is just me. It seems she doesn't like me for some reason based on her tone and facial expression and was talking to her worker in their language and felt she was rushing the cut. It results to a 3 minute haircut with no fade. After I saw my hair I just wanted to leave and start over again. my hair does not really grow fast it takes weeks to months to grow. I just do not want anything cut so I paid and left. The thing is I also was not carrying my ID card so when she asked me if I was a student and while she was saying I have to show her my ID I stated that I will just pay the regular price which is fourteen dollars. I would say for the price being in Davis its ok if you just want a simple haircut like my old haircut which is 5 1, just make sure you have your student ID, and pineapple haircuts although they have pictures on the wall of undercuts with "fade". If you are going to this shop make sure to tell the person exactly what you wanted even you are being ignored and my advice is to let them face you on the mirror if not you might need to wear a hat or benie in this hot summer weather. read more

Worst haircut ever! I'm not sure this lady knows how to use clippers all she did was shave. To give this more context i had hair down to my neck and bangs in my eyes. First thing she asks is how short do you want it. No hello or how are you, just how short. I tell her a bit shorter off my neck, out of my eyes and above my ears. she pulls out a shaver. I told her i think its to short and she yelled at me "No that's what you ask for." After that she finishes up asks me if i want my side burns in the middle of the ear after she had all ready shaved it above my ear and only shaved the one side. So now i have some uneven side burns as well as a bad hair cut. Screw this place unless you want to get your head shaved. read more

My dad-in-law has been going to Lilly for years, before she moved to Olive Drive. I find her efficient and like her haircuts.
