Oliver's is my favorite pizza joint in Marin. Unpretentious, neighborhood pizza speakeasy. Buzzing with warmth from the wood-fired oven, the fun cocktails, the flowing chatter from diners, and prompt service. Great for date night or picking up takeout pizza. The pies are great and while I don't typically love crust, theirs is chewy and worth the extra carbs. I usually order a caesar salad or their seasonal salad option (warning: prepare yourself for a hearty dinner salad) with at least 1 of these pies: Mushroom w/ sausage (secret menu), Bianca, Napoli or their Margherita. You honestly can't go wrong with any pie. They don't take reservations and it's hard to find on your first visit. They are located upstairs above Vin (wine bar) and you can enter from 4th St or from their back entrance. Excellent. This IS pizza. Small menu, HUGE flavor! Stumbled onto this spot while surfing GOOGLE Maps and some "teaser" came up and I clicked on it. A few words in and a glance at some pics, I was sold. Here's where my next pizza is coming from. Shot out a quick text to my buddy in SF and eagerly awaited 5:00 PM opening time. I love pizza. It's kind of the perfect food for me. I could eat it every day. I'm somewhat of a pizza stalker, (arrest me) and this is as good as it gets. We shared a MARGHERITA pizza. Tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil. My buddy had a beautiful large portion HOUSE CAESAR. Little gems, anchovy, lemon, breadcrumbs, parmigiano, reggiano. A delicious craft cocktail for me: NONNO'S CARDIGAN- bourbon, meletti, black walnut, orange zest. The rotating hazy beer for my buddy.... Dig it baby, the only thing missing was a live jazz trio. I was so pleased that I returned a couple hours later with my wife and we had a delicious mushroom pizza.. Great "speakeasy vibe" with expert, classy interior design/decorating work. Truly a jewel in downtown San Rafael which definitely needs something to sparkle. And, it is located above top-notch restaurant, Vin Antico on fourth Street. Finally Tried Oliver's Pizza -- Worth the Wait (Literally) I finally checked out Oliver's Pizza in San Rafael, and it did not disappoint. Know Before You Go There are no reservations, no phone number, and no call-in orders. If you want pizza, you'll need to show up and order in person. It's a little old school--and honestly a bit inconvenient--but once you're there, it works. Also, Oliver's operates out of Vin restaurant downstairs, so your final bill comes from Vin, not Oliver's. The Wait We went on a Thursday around 7:30pm and waited about 30 minutes. Not bad. They've set up a comfortable waiting area with couches and chairs, and you can order drinks from the restaurant while you wait, which helps. The Space The dining room is small and cozy, with a few seats at the bar. It feels intimate, not crowded. The Food The margherita pizza was excellent--thin crust with the right balance of crisp and chew, and a great ratio of tomato sauce to mozzarella. The Caesar salad, on the other hand, was a bit heavy. Slightly overdressed and on the salty side. I'd recommend asking for it lightly dressed. Overall Despite a few quirks in how they operate, this place delivers where it counts--the pizza. Oh my goodness - so excited to have finally made it to Oliver's! We love Vin (previously Vin Antico) and when we heard about the hidden gem upstairs ... we knew we had to try! Can't believe we didn't know about it sooner and I think this is going to be our new fav spot. We sat at the bar, had delicious handcrafted cocktails, a creative, light and fresh spin on Ceaser Salad and, since we couldn't decide on which pizza to get, we ordered two and brought a bunch home! I went here yesterday with my former co workers and we enjoyed everything we had! Our cocktails were so good! I had the daydream! I love lemon and lavender so I enjoyed my drink. The pizzas are reaaaalllly good! Thin crust, but not soggy. It reminds me of authentic Italian pizza. The varieties are simple but very tasty! We loved the Mushroom and the one with Honey Chili! It was late and we were looking to grab a bite before everything closed down in the area. We got in about 40 minutes before they closed and was able to get a table right away. We ordered and the pizzas came out pretty quick. The pizzas were okay as they were burnt and we felt like they rushed to make them so they could close on a timely manner. It is a small menu. Above Vin Antico in San Rafael is a foodie Italian treasure. They run separately, but your bill says Vin Antico. It's a six item menu without substitutions. I loved it but my friend thought the crust was overly burnt. Next time I may ask them to undercook it a bit. An important note is you can only get there by stairs but you can probably get the pizza from vin antico too. The cocktails are almost as much as the pizzas so budget accordingly. read more

Another great dinner! Get there early before the rush. It's a simple menu but they do it all well. It's a small space but be patient. It's worth it. Caesar salad is on the menu. I love this place! Second time last night, and it was better than the first. My friend and I tried one of the cocktails - can't remember the name, but it was delicious. We shared the scrumptious Caesar - fresh romaine in a lemony dressing topped with crunchy bread crumbs and puffy clouds of parmesan cheese. So good! Then we split the mushroom pizza with added sausage. So much umami. I ended up buying another pie to go so my husband could have some! Service is fast and friendly, staff helpful and smiling. We wanted to love Olivers pizza. We had heard such incredible things. The ambiance is great...it is as if you have left Marin for a hip restaurant in a little Italy near you. The drinks and the salad were DELICIOUS (the bartender was great). But when it came to the pizza....both pies we got did not have much taste. Fix your website. Find a clear way to communicate with potential customers that "Oliver's" doesn't take reservations. This shouldn't be a complicated endeavor. I was told by the host that this a continuous problem for those have rightly assumed they've made a res for Oliver's when directed to your site. Additionally, it's a good idea to train your host's on how to better communicate the issue so that they deliver an acceptable level of service to customers. read more

I've picked up a pizza from here once before and enjoyed it, but after this experience I'll never be returning. Ordered 2 pizza's to-go and waited for them in the waiting area; got them home only to learn that the bottom of both are completely raw dough. And of course, they "don't have a phone" so my option is to take them back, wait 25 mins for them to be remade, and then take them home again?! I tried salvaging them in a cast iron pan but ended up throwing both out. For $25 each for a mid-size pizza, they should be ashamed. read more

Tremendous! Visited Sat. evening. Get there early, it can get crowded and once they run out of dough, no pizza for you. Ambiance is perfect - snug bar, brick and dark wood, wonderful conversational buzz and energy. Pizzas are sublime. VERY thin crust, nice and toothsome, high-quality ingredients, and an excellent wood-fired oven. Both the sausage and soppressata pizzas are highly recommended. Cocktails were top-notch and a nice surprise. The salad was excellent. Two pizzas, one salad, olives, two cocktails, one glass of wine. I'm so lucky to live within a block of this place. Mmm I love their margarita pie. I'm not sure what it is but there's a kick to it in the back of your palette. So easy to eat all by yourself so maybe order a few if with your people. Salads change seasonally so check the website...
