When you live in Rowlett, finding a good place for drinks or dinner often means driving into Dallas. The problem is, if there's an accident on I-30, you're pretty much stuck. So instead, I decided to give one of Rowlett's newest restaurants, Ollie's Azul House, a try. For a soft opening, I was genuinely impressed. The drinks were excellent, and the atmosphere was inviting. I also love that it's family-friendly--they have outdoor activities for kids while still being a great spot for adults who want to relax. It sounds like they may have even more planned in the future. What impressed me the most, though, was the staff. Their knowledge of what they were serving, tequila, was incredible. After spending a few hours there, I learned so much about tequila and came away with a whole new appreciation for it. If you're looking for a new local spot, I definitely recommend checking it out. Update : 7/4/2026 I came back to actually eat food AND drink this time. The tacos were excellent!! ( Nachos not so much) Again, the staff was excellent. They are still finding their way, but honestly, I hope they keep it the way it is. There is a small bar with a few seats, some TVs, and regular tables. The service was impeccable. Wonderful new taco place in Rowlett! I love that the restaurant kind of extends the Main Street downtown feel across Rowlett Road. The interior is so fun and cute, lots of character. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, she gave us recommendations, but didn't try to push anything. We had the Paloma and Premium Margarita- both were excellent. Premium margarita comes in a short glass. The taco flights had a large variety to choose from. I loved that they had a couple vegetarian options, as well as a build-your-own taco option which gives limitless options. Both fish tacos were great, as well as the Grisham Mushroom. Elotes were well seasoned and dressed, loved the charred corn. And I highly recommend finishing off your meal with the churro! OMG it was piping hot fresh and delicious! The restaurant has only been open a month, so there are some small details I'm sure they're working out. - The pork carnitas on the Kirby Market were tender but lacked flavor. It was saved by the flavors of the red chimichurri. - The skirt steak on the Miller was delicious but we were fighting our taco because the meat wasn't cut properly across the grain. - Chips and salsa were tasty, but needed more acid and there was no lime wedges or salt on the table. Finally made it to Ollie's Azul House in Rowlett and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The atmosphere is incredible -- stylish, vibrant, and welcoming without trying too hard. The historic blue house gives it so much character and makes it feel unlike anywhere else in the area. The drinks, food presentation, and overall vibe make this feel more like a downtown Dallas experience tucked into Rowlett. Service was friendly, attentive, and energetic from the moment we walked in. I would warn you to be cautious ordering the Paloma cocktail because it's very tasty, light and refreshing! The guacamole was very fresh but I think they should consider adding an upgraded option where it's prepared table-side! The cloth napkins were freshly creased and something you usually see in high-end restaurants! It's the little touches and I noticed! Can't wait to see what this place looks like once the outside with the big screen and sound system they're setting up looks like come football season and all the owners and employees are super cool. Located in the beautifully restored historical Oliver House at the corner of Rowlett Rd and Main Street, Ollie's Azul House recently held its soft opening. This new spot specializes in tequila and tacos, aiming to bring a more elevated dining experience to the heart of Rowlett. From the jump, the attention to detail is evident. Moving away from the plasticware of previous tenants, Ollie's feels like a "real" restaurant with cloth napkins, proper silverware, and decor featuring historic photos of Rowlett. The atmosphere is top-notch, featuring a long bar, a family-friendly porch and backyard, and even a cozy upstairs area perfect for a private "speakeasy" vibe. The Taco Breakdown The menu offers a variety of signature "upscale" tacos. Here's how our flight landed: * The Miller (Steak): While the steak was a bit on the tough side, the flavors were undeniably there. The combination of onions, peppers, and chimichurri really made the beef notes pop. * Forester Chicken Tinga: This was a standout. The pulled chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. It came double-wrapped in soft corn tortillas and topped with a nice cream sauce and plenty of shredded slaw for a perfect crunch. * Ray Hubbard Shrimp: You get three shrimp per taco with a solid chili flavor and crisp slaw. The corn had a fantastic char, complemented by a generous amount of cream and a hit of cilantro spice. (Recommend verifying price on POS) * Blanco Queso: The consistency was thick and satisfying, though the flavor profile was a bit bland. It's a standard, safe choice for the table. Drinks & Dessert * House Margaritas: For those who like a kick, these are tequila-forward. However, the flavor was a bit light and felt slightly watery. As self-proclaimed "non-connoisseurs," we found them to be a fairly standard, middle-of-the-road option. * The Tisinger Churro: This is the perfect finish. It arrived warm, coated in cinnamon sugar, and served with a delightful dulce de leche. It's a sweet, high-note ending to the meal. Final Thought: During our soft opening visit, the staff was incredibly welcoming and appreciative of feedback (including a minor $2 pricing error on the POS regarding the elote). Our server was friendly and paid us the proper attention. 1) no acknowledgement from the hostess. I was expected to just follow her to my table . No "hello, how are you? Would you like inside or outside"... 2) ordered a Corona Michelada. Sever looked at me like I was nuts. He said no one had ever ordered one if those. Ordered just a Corona. Server came back to advise out of Corona...hmmm Goody Goody, Aldi, CVS,Walgreens and Walmart all with a short distance and you don't have any Corona...Server didn't even ask the bartender if he knew how or had the things necessary to make a Michelada with any kind of beer... 3) "salsa" absolutely unappealing to the eye and to the taste. Couldn't decide if it looked and tasted more like old, brown guacamole or cat food... 4) Kirby Market tacos were at least good. All in all a1 out of 10 experience. Won't be back. read more

I would rate higher if it was a better value. You get 3 tacos with no sides. Food is great, they cook with care. You can taste the flavors, not just plain ol salt. The cottage style setting is relaxing .Staff is attentive. Not low cost. You won't have leftovers to take home. You can literally eat at TX Roadhouse with ribeye steak and pay the same. But.. have to admit I enjoyed it. Corn tortillas taste homemade. Shrimp tacos were yummy. Nachos were good. Drinks do not disappoint. Overall, yes I'd go back, but not often due to cost. Skip the drinks and the price will go down, but it's hard to resist those too. Oh I just remembered the elote gives you a tiny portion-maybe 3 spoonfuls for like $6-$8. I will definitely skip that next time. But give it a try, might be one of your favorite spots. read more

Lunch | $10-20 We came for lunch and were a bit taken aback when we saw that we had to pay for chips and salsa. We got the lunch special off $10 for three ground beef tacos. The tacos were good, fairly small, and came with no sides, other than chips. Then we were charged for chips because we ordered the chips before we knew we were getting the special. They did remove the charge after we mentioned it. If you are looking for a great Mexican food experience, this is probably not the place. Great choices of tacos, including a build your own, but not many other options or sides. read more

We came at lunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. Normally, we settle in and all the things we love about a new place we've never tried. Unfortunately, that was not the case today. Though they were not busy, they sat us right next to the only other group there. The music was horrible and loud, so we asked the server to turn it down, which they did. We were surprised that chips and salsa was not automatically served, but had to be ordered. And, charged. We ordered the lunch special- 3 small tacos for $10. It comes with chips and salsa. No rice. No beans. Then we were charged for chips and salsa. The waitress removed the charge when pointed out our special came with chips and salsa. Unfortunately, this was not a great experience. We will not be back. This was definitely a one and done for us. If you're interested in trying it, I would suggest you go soon. I dont expect them to be around long. read more

After my husband and I were seated, we asked to be moved because the music sounded like heavy metal and was too loud for background music. Unfortunately, it was just as loud at our new table so we decided to try and ignore it. Our efforts turned out to be futile so we asked the waitress why they chose such abrasive music for Sunday lunch and if they could lower the volume. She got the manager who informed us that she could not bring the volume down any lower and that the owner requires this particular rock music to be played in the restaurant on Sunday til 2p (can't remember what time they said it started). The music was a jarring mix of aggressive rock and metal. We were told it was Christian rock as if that made it any more bearable. It was especially laughable because we were sitting right next to four people in their 80s while we listened to bands like Nine Lashes, a non-Christian band called Art of Dying and Switchfoot (thanks, Shazam app) whose music was loudly and cruelly imposed upon us. This is a ridiculous choice of music for the Sunday morning/early afternoon crowd. It's way too niche for any restaurant as it is, much less for the group in the room we were in. Don't take my word for it-- check out the screenshot of the AI response to my query... My husband and I tried but couldn't stand it to the point we boxed up our meal and left. The friendly staff couldn't apologize enough. I feel very sorry that they have to deal with such a stupid marketing decision by whoever dictates the music. I was happy for the elderly group next to us undoubtedly reaping the benefits of hearing loss. The food was okay to pretty good but not worth the punishment we had to endure. We will not go back and it's a shame because we dine out a lot and tip well. read more

Came in late in the evening for drinks with a friend and had a great experience. It was pretty quiet and empty when we arrived, but the service was excellent--the bartender was super friendly. We did not have a good experience at this restaurant. We patiently waited for our food for over an hour, then after we inquired if something was wrong with our order we were told that the order was never submitted to the cooking staff. The manger was notified ( by staff) that there was an issue -he told us our food was behind another order & should be up soon. We decided to pay for our drinks & chips at this point & just leave, go somewhere else (which we did). We were polite & professional. The manager wouldn't accept payment for the drinks & chips, however he did offer for us (to wait further) take our order to go- which wasn't even prepared yet. He gave us his business card, I guess to placate us. I told him the restaurant has many things to improve on. He agreed. We will not go back to this restaurant for a long time - if ever. We went to Ollie's to celebrate our anniversary. The atmosphere of this early-1900s farmhouse, now a restaurant, was relaxing and historical. The staff was friendly and checked in on us frequently. The food was delicious - all made from scratch dishes. The price was very reasonable. We didn't sample the tequila, so I can't comment on that. The location is just a block from downtown Main Street. i stopped by for breakfast this morning. Here is my review: 1. I had to ring the doorbell on the back porch to get service. 2. No menu, just pictures of a few breakfast tacos on the back door to choose from. 3 $5 a piece. 4. Nothing to drink. No coffee...nothing. I had to ask for water. 5. The tacos were served in a brown paper sack. Two cocktail napkins. 6. The tacos were small and greasy. 7. I left hungary and very disappointed. I hope these guys get the bugs worked out because the venue is really cool, and the people were lovely. However, keeping in mind that apparently they've only officially open two weeks, the menu, food and the service need polishing. As a starter, Texas is land of tacos and we LOVE Tacos. However if you're going make a menu that's basically only tacos, you have to hit it out of the ballpark. Right now they're not achieving this. Except for a few limited items on the shareable (appetizers) menu, this is an only taco menu. The venue is really cool. It's an old house that apparently has struggled to maintain a variety of restaurants. There is a big outdoor patio that would be perfect for happy hour with its adjoining area with tether balls, and picnic tables for those who really want to sit outside. Great spot for a happy hour or family gathering. We didn't check if it was pet friendly but if it is, this yard would certainly be a draw. The place was packed on Friday night. Because it was very noisy we opted to sit out on the patio, which was much quieter. That may have impacted the level of service, but the actual patio is very nice. We ordered the nachos off the shareable menu. They just were not good. Most of the chips were broken into really tiny pieces and did not taste fresh. The toppings were not plentiful. A couple pieces of long strips of chicken rather than having them spread out and a few black beans drizzled on top. Definitely a pass in the future. As mentioned, this is a taco restaurant. The menu is pretty much only tacos, other than the shareable menu. They have a cute menu of taco choices that names the taco choices for surrounding cities along with a option to build your own from a build your own menu. The menu is confusing. Five people at the table and it took us each more than 20 minutes to figure out how the tacos were priced. Basically you can buy individual tacos for five dollars each or you can get three for $12.99 on a "flight." Fortunately the menus are not an expensive print and this could easily be fixed by having the hostess or waitress when they greet the guest seated at the tables explain explaining how the pricing works. Hiding it in a box in the banner for the taco menu just isn't working. The menu of choices is interesting and inviting, but the food itself wasn't wow. The service needed a little polish too but that's not unusual for a new place. We had a server switch between ordering the drinks and the rest of the menu. We had to ask for silverware, drink refills, etc. These are all not uncommon issues for a new restaurant. The owner was very nice and spoke to us when we asked about catering, as well as very welcoming at check-in. We hope that it will get the bugs worked out and achieve its potential in the next couple of weeks. read more

Service was great. I personally didn't like the menu. It is a taco house and nothing more. High priced tacos at that and felt like I could get a better taco at taco Bueno. Way too greasy couldnt finish two of them. Had nachos and added grilled steak . Did not get money's worth at all. Also charged for chips and salsa like you would get at a fast food restaurant. Charged for jalapeños to go with my nachos. No value in what the menu was. Sorry to say I will not be back. There have been 3 restaurants in that house and did not visit any of the other ones. Was hoping to find a good restaurant, didn't happen. The house was cool on the inside but need to change the way they approach their food on the menu. The tacos and sauces were delicious. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. I had hard shell tacos which were sooo good. My husband had three soft tacos which he enjoyed very much. After my 4th visit I have finally given up on having a consistent meal. Really wanted to give them a shot at making it. After seeing second menu type in less than 60 days. 1st menu very confusing and new menu is so small you have to use glasses and a flash light. Today I order queso and chips and also had to pay $3 bucks for salsa that tasted like an onion. Beyond all the options there was nothing on the menu that appealed to me. I tried the street potatoes again and potatoes were over cooked. I said something and received apologies and another bowl of the same hard to chew street potatoes which I have had them 2 other times. No Consistency though I didn't pay for the street potatoes as they took them off my bill. Done and Done! read more

The taco flight and Dexham Elote were great! Full of flavors! Downside was warm beer from the bottle and draft as well as mostly chip crumbs in our chip basket. We will come back. Hopefully the cooler has been fixed and the crumbs left in the trash before serving. Prices were fair. read more

Pleasantly surprised! Came in for lunch with family and decided to sit outside. Ambience reminded me of a shack on the beach with a quaint tequila bar overlooking the patio. Margaritas were perfect, not too sweet and went down easy. We ordered 9 different tacos and all of them were excellent (special shoutout to the Barbacoa). Service was the highlight of our experience. Our waitress Angie was attentive and had fantastic recommendations! Looks like they're building out more space for live bands and events, excited to see how it all comes together. The margaritas were terrible. I asked the waiter the difference in the tequilas in the house versus the premium margarita (if it was a blanco and reposado) and he was clueless by what that meant, then just told me they could be swapped. I ordered the house margarita and I couldn't even finish it. I ordered the Schrade street carne asada but was brought the McEntee carnitas. It was bland and there was no flavor to the meat. Tried Ollie's today with my Husband and will say this is a solid 3 star place! Our Palomas were excellent and chips and salsa was good. Tacos were solid (although just mildly warm). Service was great, until we ordered our churros for dessert. We were served our check before they came out, and fully paid tip and all before we had dessert and told "no rush" even though we didn't have our dessert that we had ordered. They were delivered to another table on accident, which happens, but then we could hear the servers discussing what to do. I would recommend finding somewhere else to talk about these issues rather than almost directly next to the table. Ultimately, we waited around 10 minutes additionally for our churros after they told us about it. I would say, this place is very solid and I'm sure once they're open for longer the experience over all will be better. Just remember that they are still refining service! read more

Hi, went to lunch here today with my husband and my daughter. I was so excited because I love the building and the house gives a welcoming vide. However we got there around 11:30 and the first thing I noticed was that the welcome map was dirty. I would think coming in at 11:30 it wouldn't be busy yet and the carpet was dirty. Especially since there wasnt that many people. OK so I ignored it. We order drinks and they brought me a diet coke that was flat and asked to get a new one and it was still bad. Then we order. The queso was pretty good, but I can get the same chips at chilies. I ordered the Princton tacos and my husband the Miller. Cute names because they are depictions of Rowlett. My thoughts are I could have made them at home better. Especially me not being of the ethnicity that normally would make tacos, but hey we are in texas, so alot of people can make tacos. Nearly any meat in them, flour tortillas were rubberized and seem to be purchased at Walmart. My husbands look like grease was dripping on his plate and it was like they scrapped the barrel for chicken. I felt like I was eating tex mex in New York city, and that is not normal for native Texans. We are here for the homestyle Tex Mex. Not stuff you can get at taco bell. Note I didn't mention Bueno (which is even better). We ate them because we were hungry. Also there is no kids menu which is out of the norm for us going to a sit down restaurant. It was like I was in a taco truck disguised as a restaurant. Which is mean to say about a taco truck. The hole in the wall taco stand in ExxonMobil up the street is better food. Man I was hoping to be blown away, because I want a family restaurant to last here, this is not it. You need change and oversight on what comes out those kitchen doors.
