Bar program is strong. The short rib pot pie was a straight up winner. Rich, comforting, and not trying to be anything other than good food done right. The bone marrow lost me. Cooked well, but buried under too many microgreens and then oddly topped with tortilla chip strips. No smokiness either. It felt more confused than cohesive. Where it really started to miss was the overall approach. A lot of "the chef intends this..." type explanations. It ends up feeling like the food insists upon itself instead of just letting you enjoy it. That's the bigger issue. This place exists in a space where I don't think most people want to meet it. Not casual enough to relax, not refined enough to justify the performance. Bottom line: good drinks, great pot pie, but the experience tries a little too hard.

It's a win-win. I stop in here whenever I need something in a pinch. Closet light burned out? Need to hang a gifted photo? Doing some yard work? This is a good one stop shop for any house project. Plus it's not the size of a football field (again, less selection is really my only criticism) so you can get in and out with what you need quickly. Around this season I'm mostly working on my yard and garden. I stopped in to grab some garden soil on sale, it saved me about 4 bucks a bag compared to the competition. It's all outside so you tell them what you want inside and they look it up, you pay, then you head back out to grab your items. They help you load your car if you need it as well. Excellent service from Starr at the register, she found the numbers and sales for everything I was buying. The young gentleman who helped me load my car was great too. It's nice to see professional hardworking kids with big smiles. I've had keys made here, I've had a window screen repaired as well. Never had any problems. This is definitely a good option no matter what project your working on.

I was in and out for soil... or so I thought. I ended up stumbling across their clearance section, and let me tell you--it's a goldmine. They had lighting and other household gear marked down to 60% off retail. I scored four awesome headlamps for a fraction of the price. It's not something I planned for, but I'm definitely not mad about it. I believe it was Bill or Phil who helped me out--he was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I asked about grow lights, and not only did he make a solid recommendation, but he also walked me over to the right section. That kind of personal service is rare these days, and it left a great impression. One thing I noticed, though, was that the older staff members were genuinely friendly and helpful. They greeted me, engaged in conversation, and seemed to take pride in being there. In contrast, the younger staff felt a little checked out... not rude, but they were kind of low energy and not particularly invested. This is not a dealbreaker, but it is worth mentioning. The fantastic selection of hidden deals, and some of the best soil prices I've seen in town. It's clear that this Ace cares about its regulars and offers value that goes beyond convenience.
