I walked 2 1/2 blocks for a bottle of wine and back as my husband sat at the table and ate a salad . This is not sexy at all. Bright lights!!!No one is getting laid here. We came on a Saturday night. It was busy but there was seating available. The ambiance and decor is quaint. There was pop music playing in the background which I guess fit with the pacific Beach vibe but maybe did not mix so well with the restaurant decor. Odd choice for an Italian restaurant. While the music was not loud, I did find the restaurant noise level to be above average. Conversation at times was difficult. Our server informed us that they were BYOB. There is a liquor store three blocks away if you are in a pinch. We found service to be friendly but perhaps a bit aloof. Overall average performance. The salad was arugula based. I enjoy arugula and found the salad crisp and fresh. The dressing was Italian. The bread was fresh with a coating of oil. Quite delicious. Seafood pasta then arrived. The server deposited my dish on the table and left. I was never offered cheese? I found the spaghetti to be a little overdone. The sauce was hearty with a hint of garlic. The seafood was fresh. The Margherita pizza was interesting. The crust had the taste and feel of a New York style pizza but the appearance suggested that of the classic Italian pie. We were not fans of the pizza. Everything about this restaurant is perfect. The atmosphere here is absolutely amazing. It's intimate and cozy, like going to an Italian family's home for dinner. Everyone working there was friendly and welcoming and extremely helpful. Our hostess recommended the mushroom pappardelle. So my friend got that one and I got the bolognese with pappardelle (most popular dish). And let me tell you, the bolognese was delicious, but the mushroom pappardelle was out of this world delicious. The texture of the homemade pappardelle pasta was perfect, perfect thickness and cooked perfectly al dente. Highly recommend the pasta here. The pizza also looked delicious, especially the one with the eggplant. For dessert, we got tiramisu, chocolate panna cotta, and caramel panna cotta (recommended by the hostess). They were all absolutely delicious. The tiramisu wasn't too heavy and the pana cotta was so creamy and delicious. I personally thought the caramel complimented the panna cotta a little bit better than the chocolate. Overall, this restaurant is my new favorite hole in the wall Italian restaurant in San Diego. Negligent and racist staff? We called twice, no answer so we walked in. Nobody greeted us, asked if we had a reservation and we said no and asked if we could be seated. She went to the kitchen while we waiting in between tables in the very busy, noisy, small restaurant. After a few mins she came out and said "you can sit wherever" as if she had already told us that and we were the ones being weird. They checked in like twice, some people who came in after us got their food first and I had to call over an annoyed waitress and asked if our food was coming out. She said " yes it's coming" in a very rude voice. Ok, we have been waiting for like an hour? They never brought a drink we ordered either. I asked for a wine list and the waitress left to get the wine list. Or so I thought. Then she came back and said "no wine". Apparently we had to bring our own which wasn't advertised. And of course, they were wonderful to all of the tables around us, chatting and being personable to everyone but us. The only common denominator we could figure out is that they were all white. We were polite and patient even though they took forever. When we were finally finished, they never came to give us the check and we had to call one of them over for it. We were clearly done, not drinking wine or anything (because you have to bring your own) and all of the plates were gone, and the waitress was more focused on other tables, chatting, than checking in on us. They gave us some weird stale cannolis with broken cream at the end. It was bizarre and awkward the entire meal. Oh and the food was mediocre. Tip: bring your own wine...and wine glass read more

Wife and I wanted a local, family owned Italian restaurant and Oltre Mare is exactly that. Friendly service and delicious food. Their focaccia is delicious and reminded me of my grandmother's. Wife had a margherita pizza and loved it. I ordered the pescatora and enjoyed every bite. Pasta is homemade and perfectly cooked, the seafood is fresh and plentiful and the sauce was simply out of this world. Their menu is simple but they do their dishes very well. The prices are very reasonable considering the high quality of the food. Be prepared to bring your own bottle of wine, but we understand they don't charge a corking fee. What a perfect little gem in PB for Italian food! Their speciality seems to be concentrated around the seafood area. I'm so glad we found this neighborhood Italian eatery. For our visit, we ordered the mussels appetizer (on special), the lobster gnocchi, and the wild boar pappardelle. Everything was absolutely perfect! The mussels were well seasoned in the white wine sauce. I used the free bread they give you to mop up the sauce. The lobster gnocchi was flavorful with the perfect hints of seafood taste. It also comes with half a lobster so I went to town picking out the meat. The wold boar was fragrant and contained quite a bit of rosemary, but still delicious. The pappardelle tasted like fresh pasta and cooked al dente. We also had the tiramisu with dessert. It had a hint of rum with soft pillows of cream. It was absolutely divine! They do take reservations, and I do recommend making them. Most of the tables filled up when I was there on a Friday night. Second visit to Alta Marea on Saturday night. We were not disappointed. My husband exclaimed, "This is authentic Italian food!" Of course, the owners are Italian! They know how to make great food. My favorite is the salty, flaky bread that is put on the table. It is so good, I think I could just eat that and be satisfied (we ordered a second basket because it is THAT good). It is especially delicious with the Caprese salad. YUM! My husband ordered lobster ravioli and my son ordered the Wild Boar, I got my usual pizza. All of our dinners were tasty (large portions, we all were lucky enough to have left overs the next day). The best part (besides the tasty bread) was the cannoli dessert. I LOVE cannoli. This did not disappoint, I tried to get the recipe from the owner, but her lips were sealed. I guess I have to return to have more. Just note that it was a special that night and not always on the menu. The owners are charming and they came to chat with us at our table. We had a 6:00 reservation, the restaurant wasn't too full, but by the time we left around 7:00 almost all of the tables were full. The pizza here was pretty meh for the price, very basic and not very fresh ingredients. The margherita pizza had dried basil sprinkled on it instead of fresh basil, they used canned mushrooms on another one of our pizza's which was just overall disappointing. The seafood pasta was pretty good but a very small portion for what your are paying for. The menu lacks variety as well. Super weird inside, when you first walk in it almost seems like you're walking into a house/dining room, the restaurant is just one room. It may be a little awkward for some people being so close to all the tables/all tables being confined to one room if it's a first date or you want more privacy/people not looking right at you. Service was very slow when we arrived (had reservations too), upon seating us didn't provide menus until probably 8 minutes passed, and also took awhile to bring out waters. I noticed there were only two servers taking care of everyone and they both were taking care of all the tables, got asked twice for things because of that, which can be a simple fix to prevent that. Both servers were very nice though. The pizza and salad was amazing, great homemade dressing. Bolognese isn't my favorite but theirs tasted good. Sword fish was meh, not worth the price in my opinion. People also BYOB, no alcohol provided but I didn't care. Looks like people were drinking their wine out of water glasses, so they don't provide proper wine glasses. I'd come back for the pizza and salad! Wouldn't come if I'm starving though because of the slow service. Seems like authentic Italian food. Would love to explore their gnocchi next time. read more

Fantastic location! One of the best dinner I have ever had. From starters to desserts it is perfect. Produces are extremely fresh, everything was delicious. We had the Oltre Mare salad (arugula/heirloom/olives/feta - perfect addition to a pizza), the burrata (best I have ever had) with heirloom tomatoes. I came here for dinner with my coworkers after work. The restaurant appear is very unique - it appears to have been converted from a house. We sat on the patio and the decor was nice. Tables and chairs were a little on the older side which made the look rustic. I ordered the Wild Boar Bolognese. I don't think I had wild boar before, so it was a great first introduction to it. The pappardelle tasted really fresh (it was handmade). Portion size was decent, I was starving so it did feel a little on the smaller size. They let you bring in your own beer or wine without having to pay a corkage fee. Our sever was friendly and quick to help us where needed. Would recommend for those in the area. Definitely legitimate authentic Italian food served here. Everything we ordered was exquisite, full of flavors, and on point. Their pizza is very simple , yet tasty, from the pizza dough to the pizza sauce. Crust is thin, and the crust on the edge is crispy, so easy to eat it all. We tried the Pizza Quattro Stagioni and the tomato sauce is light, nothing like too salty, or too sweet, or too tangy, it sort of reminded us of a delicious pizza we had in Napoli (Naples), in Italy. They also make their own pasta noodles, and they were absolutely fresh and fabulous. The pasta noodles are handmade, so, you can't get it al dente, but somehow, the texture of it is nicely full, so it is not too soft at all and does not fall apart when cooked up. We had pasta with clams, pasta with mushrooms, and the grilled shrimps as entrées. The pasta with mushrooms was simply amazing, comes with wide noodles. The pasta with clams comes with a sauce which gives an explosion of flavors in your mouth, sauce is mixed with garlic and different herbs. The grilled shrimps were so fresh and meaty, served on the bed of lettuce. The only thing we would recommend for next time is that the dressing is super light and refreshing, but a little too salty. So, we would request to have less salt on the dressing next time. Having the grilled shrimps felt like we were transported in one of the coastal parts of the Mediterranean Sea in Italy. Eating it literally makes you feel like you were on a summer vacation, on the beach, relaxing with plenty of fun and sun, and savoring on good foods. The love is truly felt in the food. This is a family owned business, and the owners are truly hardworking. They cook the food and serve it, they work well as a team. We were impressed. This place came as a recommendation from one of my friends, and with no hesitation, we will recommend it to others too. Can't wait to return soon to try other foods on their menu. read more

First off, I ordered a margherita pizza. I have to say I was very disappointed when I was given a basic cheese pizza (as pictured) that looked unlike any margherita pizza I've seen. Also, the service-unless you're white, don't go here. Our waitress clearly made a difference with providing excellent service to white patrons while giving my friend and I mediocre service. She would go to each and every table to check up on her customers, except for us, when we were nothing but polite with her. Grabbed some takeout on a weeknight. It was good, not great. Was expecting something better based on reviews, but maybe sitting in-house drinking some wine, laughing with friends would make the food better. Sometimes that plays a role.
