The wife and I came here and sat at the bar (which is not a 'sushi bar' with chefs behind it, but rather a regular bar w/ a bartender), which had a very pleasing to the eye wooden backdrop to it. The atmosphere was really great, and the service was fine. Our issue was the sushi. We tried a lot of different nigiri's, sashimi, and handrolls: the only thing that we really enjoyed was the seared salmon; everything else was meh, with the chu-toro being particularly disappointing . I have had a good amount of chu-toro in my life and this had to be one of the poorest quality pieces ever....it essentially tasted exactly like regular ahi, without having any more discernable fat on it than a standard piece of tuna. A cool place to come and have drinks and/or the seared salmon. But as far as the rest of the sushi, I wouldn't come back for that. read more

It is such a high-quality and tasteful experience for $35, I am so appreciative that they make dining like this something you can fit into a weekday. We came to celebrate my friend's birthday! She had never been here so she was excited to try it. We made an early reservation and came right after work. We ordered the Omakai Experience which came with 9 courses for $75. To drink, I had a non-alcoholic peach bellini and my friend had 2 sakis. Our server was Franco and he was wonderful. A different kind of experience! Came here to grab a bite to eat before going out to explore the area. Started off with the edamame which you can't ever go wrong. Then had a glass of Pinot Grigio - really good! I also had a blue crab hand roll and the salmon tasting. They explained the concept of the salmon tasting and each piece tasted different but delicious. The service was good, our waiter was attentive and answered any questions we had on the menu. This is my favorite sushi place in Coconut Grove. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. I saw them at the Miami Open and did not think twice about stopping by. I was not expecting the food to be quite as good as it is at the restaurant, but it absolutely was. I absolutely love the food, I love the energy in the building and the service was top notch. You guys can go over my check ins, I am a variety eater. I love a good hole in the wall and I love a 5 star Michelin situation as well but it felt very unwelcoming to me and my kid. Yes we weren't dressed the way they needed us to (we were just running in and out) but the environment wasn't super welcoming when it comes to solo dates with my 11 year old. I don't care for a blue crab, so I asked to substitute the blue crab hand roll for something and they subbed yellow tail for me. We always have such a great experience at the Omakai in Coconut Grove. The hostesses and our waiter were very friendly and helpful. The food is great quality and delicious . My only callout is they don't have low sodium soy sauce, but they do offer gluten-free, which is tamari. I highly recommend this place for lunch! We came on a weeknight and surprisingly was busy. The place is dimly lit and a little bit loud. It was definitely meant for people who are extroverts. We waited about 15 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, it took a few more minutes before someone came over. We ordered pretty quickly and surprisingly the sushi came fairly quickly. Everyone ordered the Oma deluxe which includes an appetizer, 2 hand rolls and several pieces of nigiri. It was actually pretty filling. He originally wanted to go all-in with the chef's experience which was 16 courses, but I wasn't sure I could handle that much food so we compromised and went with the Deluxe Experience which was 12 courses instead. And honestly, It was the perfect choice. Every single piece we were served was absolutely phenomenal. The attention to detail, the freshness of the fish, the balance of flavors. To top it off, we added the Wagyu Roll on the side, and that was a mouthwatering in itself. Rich, tender, and perfect. The atmosphere was intimate and relaxed, and the staff was great from start to finish. The tables a little close to ea h other but other than that we were completely impressed. Overall delicious, but I wasn't aware I was given the lunch menu, as it was not written anywhere on the menu- not even under "Fall 2024". I recommend them to make this "Lunch, Fall 2024". This menu error resulted in a higher bill ($50 for deluxe vs. $40). It also resulted in there being too much food served to me. Am I mad? No. Annoyed? Most definitely. My social anxiety didn't let me address this at the table, too. Will I never go again because of this? Unlikely. Now down to business: I ordered the sushi deluxe, and it was delicious. I had a few pieces where I think the rice may have been undercooked, but I really couldn't tell. I loved the king salmon with lemon and sea salt. It was definitely my favourite. I encourage everyone to try the sashimi without any soy sauce, as the pieces were delicious as prepared. I also had jasmine green tea. The ambiance was cozy and intimate- would be a good date night spot. Would not be good for children. Service was very good as well. Plates were promptly removed- maybe a little rushed at times, but nothing impacting my dining experience. I do like when restaurants include service charge for wages, so they do get points there as well. I am very pleased with Omakai's Happy Hour options. I had heard they offered amazing quality and freshness at unbeatable prices that was definitely the case. The staff was friendly and efficient. We sat by the bar, quite small, so plan accordingly, but the restaurant is appealing and family friend. We love how diverse the selection of food in the happy hour menu was and tried everything multiple times. Compared to other restaurants, they win in affordability without sacrificing taste. Still come to this place but recently I have been having not so great experience because of the service. The hostess has said rude comments to us the past two times. And I mean really, when you're working the front of the house it's better not to say anything disrespectful to your customers. The past two times we've had to wait a good 20 minutes, at least, for our table despite having a reservation. This most recent time, I didn't enjoy the service from our waiter either. I get it, it's busy but the passive aggressive tone just gets old during the whole dinner. As for the food, it's always good but after coming here 5 times, it gets a little old. Don't get me wrong the fish is delicious and their plates are great. But, they don't change. I think for newcomers it's great and I also recommend to come during lunch. Every time I've come for lunch it's been a great experience, dinner not as much. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, it is so nice to see the bustle of the Grove through all of the windows. I love that much of the restaurant is windows, but it also tucked away and a place to have a lovely meal. The sushi is fresh and yummy, and they add the prefect touch of flavor to a classic dish. I went for their first Sake Club with some friends and we loved it! They pair a sake with a dish (think Omakase with a paired sake). We learned a lot about sake, and had a great time! They will be changing the menu for this Sake Club every month. Highly recommend! My favorite from the Sake Club menu was the Torched Dorade (which I had never had before) and of course the Salmon Belly!! We also ordered from the regular menu, too. The Sake Club was $50/person. Ok I want to start off by saying I am one of Omakai's biggest fans. I give it a five star review almost every time, and I go to their hand roll bar once a week at least. However, I think they really missed the mark with this "deluxe summer series" menu. It's an extra $15 for seemingly elevated pieces, but it seemed to me like the same pieces of sushi, with a little extra topping - such as some shaved truffles, or a couple pieces of ikura. The garnishes did not accentuate the dish to warrant a $15 upcharge, and I would have preferred the regular deluxe menu, and ordering extra pieces. Many of the regular deluxe items were BETTER than the summer series, and my friend and I both agreed on this. Let me be specific-- for started they give you these cold noodles, which my friend and I both thought were nasty. The brosh was really fishy, the noodles had a strange texture. I can't imagine a world where a patron would prefer those over the typical seaweed salad. Neither one of us finished this dish, or had more than a few bites. The seared salmon was fine, but the salmon sashimi with ponzu onions far and away takes the cake. This did not compare at all. Then as previously mentioned, the other nigiries were great as always, but just with little changes that did not warrant this price difference in our opinion. There was one thing that absolutely blew us away. I have never ordered Omakai's uni, and my friend and I both ordered two pieces of their Japanese uni. It was OUTSTANDING. Served so ice cold, it melted in our mouths and was extremely creamy. For most people, uni is an acquired taste, but I cannot imagine anyone not absolutely loving this piece. Not only was it the best bite we had, it was the best bite I've had at Omakai thus far, and might just be one of the best bites of Uni I've ever had in general (and this is including my trip to Japan.) With that said, the service was great as usual, and place was packed for a Thursday lunch. I will recommend Omakai every time. read more

I went to Omakai on Friday for happy hour with my friends and I was truly impressed. First, I'll start off by saying that their happy hour prices are great and they have delicious options for both bites and wine or sake. We later had dinner and I got the Oma option. Every piece of sushi was delicious and had the perfect amount of flavors! I also feel like their pricing is great. Our server's name was Sierra and she was lovely. She was very knowledgeable on the menu items and was just a good vibe all around, which is refreshing to see. I must add that while we were there unfortunately one of the employees had a medical emergency and I was truly impressed on how the other employees reacted and helped their fellow coworker and kept the situation under control.
