Room: The penitentiary Participants: 8 people (2 groups of 4 friends) Result: Escaped! I'm not new to escape rooms and have done a good number around different locations in the city now. I would rank this second best in the city, after mission escape games. Their rooms are high-tech and their puzzles are appropriately challenging. I don't want to give too much away but basically, you start this room split into 3 different cell blocks. Teamwork is absolutely key here so make sure you get a good group. My group was unfortunately teamed up with a group that just really sucked... at solving puzzles and at being human (refusing to show other people the clues, annoyingly stating that they are smart, and not providing any beneficial suggestions to the group). So PLEASE, do whatever you can to make sure you know the people you are going in with, otherwise you'll leave the place pissed and not wanting to take a picture like I did. This place was the most expensive of all the escape rooms that I've tried. They can definitely afford to charge more since it is better than most, but I've definitely seen better high-tech rooms than this around town. Also, I would recommend bringing a piece of paper and a pen so you can write down some clues and work it out. read more

I was looking for a fun activity to do with some friends while I was in NY and stumbled across this Yelp-rated 4.5 star escape room so we thought it'd be worth a try. We were a party of 4 and did Room X which had a pretty interesting concept/storyline. My group successfully escaped in time but my overall review of it would be that it was just ok. The cinematics and design of the rooms were pretty cool (no spoilers here), but my group found that some of the locks/codes were fidgety. Like we would input the correct code but the locks wouldn't open or we would all 4 decide that the clue gave us a certain number but it wouldn't be that number. This gave us unnecessary anxiety and wasted a lot of our time. As featured on their main webpage, I did like how they integrated lasers into their rooms. It's pretty innovative considering I've never seen it before in Toronto (I've done maybe 4-5 escape rooms before). I would like to first preface that my original experience warranted a 1 star review but after speaking with management, I've revised it to 4 stars. Without going too much into detail, my group's first experience was really terrible primarily due to a MIA game master. The individual failed to respond numerous requests for clues and likely didn't do a good room check before we arrived because one of our flashlights and walkie talkies died midway through. Imagine standing there waiting for your game master to respond and wasting precious time, for a response that never came lol. Management reached out to me after my first review and requested we give them another shot. What great customer service! Our second experience was MUCH better and leads me to believe our first game was an iscolated incident since this seems to be a highly rated place. Our second game master was attentive and thoroughly took the time afterwards to go over the game. My group played both Room X and Biohazard and both had some unique and challenging puzzles. I took off one star because although they have some cool/fun features, upkeep could be a little better. Nobody wants to struggle with a clue bc something's broken and not working properly. It's an okay experience. The staff were friendly, but could have been more informative. The price per person is on the higher end at $38. However, the puzzles and props are not as well thought out or well designed in comparison to some of the other escape room experiences. We played "Room X" and in some instances it felt lacking. The ending especially, felt very sudden and recycled. When I called in advance to confirm whether there were flashing lights or other trigger warnings, the staff didn't mention there were lasers in "Room X". The lasers were mounted on flexible bases that can be adjusted upwards and point at people's faces, which made many in the group extremely uncomfortable in the tight space. read more

We came as a group of 6 and were matched with 2 other people in the Room X game. While the game itself was fun and contained a few clever puzzles, in general I didn't feel at all that this place was any more high tech than any of the other Escape the Room games in the city, so I felt like my expectations were totally raised and then dashed again. I really liked the concept of splitting into two teams initially and then eventually coming back together, but I just wish that there had been actual high tech elements in the game. 2.5 stars. Honestly not worth the time or money until they improve their rooms, puzzles, and overall quality. Some of the "High tech" puzzles didn't work, so we ended up just getting frustrated and wasting our time. Not great quality overall, and the nonsensical clues were only appropriate for 2-3 people to work on at a time. Any more than that and you're all talking over each other or the rest of you are just standing there. Not much team work. Some people may enjoy it, but I personally was pretty disappointed. At first, i couldn't contain myself thinking that in one hour I would be going through one of the most highly rated, commonly toured escape rooms in New York City. Tragically, my experience was far from what I thought it would be. For around $35 a person, I was expecting something completely different. Let's put it this way: the cost to design and pay for the 'escape room' my family and I ventured though could have been created for less than the cost that we all paid ($230). The rooms were ridiuclously small, to the point where when one of us was searching for clues, the others were forced to turn on their sides to let them walk by. The 'artifacts' and other equipment used (for the most part) was made of stickers, pieces of laminated paper, hard plastic, and what I can only guess to be old miscellaneous items found on eBay. I can't stress how poorly this was designed, including the lack of time, cleverness and uniqueness put into the rooms. Please do yourself and others a favor by taking your time and money elsewhere. read more

Oh you think you're smart huh? You were valedictorian or salutatorian you say? Had all A's and were on the deans list? Nice with puzzles eh? Well I challenge you to accept this challenge of making it through all escape rooms unscathed and on time. My time here was truly a challenge, one that I will never forget. I arrived just in the nick of time because they were definitely about to start the game without me. Note: arrive fifteen minutes before your scheduled time as the web site says. On to the um...fun. So we get in the room and begin trying to figure out how to get out and we're doing well. Made it through the first two of four which is saying a lot because the percentage of those that make it through is rather low. We did use two "hints" as provided via walkie, so yes we had help though one could barely hear with all the static. Also, being a grown a$$ woman and trying to complete such high-level thinking tasks after the sun goes down is not a good look. Hint: before you get there, make sure you've eaten and are fully hydrated. Even though our team was super smart and capable, time ran out and we had to be rescued and walked through the last two rooms. Even still, it was a great time and the customer service was superb. Hint: you can not bring your phone inside these rooms but they do hold it for you. They offer you a free soda or water if you Yelp the place so keep that in mind. I'm thinking I should have had that Mountain Dew after all...for mental clarity. Lastly and finally, the bathroom was super dutty. Get it together y'all and do better. Came here with my friends on Saturday for a 7pm appointment. Our group had 9 people and had a blast. First everyone has to turn in their phones and really have to work together so make sure you come with your best buds. I won't spoil the puzzle however they probably change it up every year, but it is challenging and requires some mental skills and logic to draw conclusions. There was one part with the laser beams which made me feel like I was a secret agent lol! Loved it so much, can't wait to come back with another group of friends. I believe my group arrived on time, and the staff told us where the bathrooms were and told us to all go, NOT telling us that they were starting our time already. So when we actually began the puzzle, we lost 10 minutes, which actually affected us winning the puzzle (we were in the middle of the last step). Went here on a Friday night in July 2019 with my sisters and father. We got there a bit earlier than our reservation time and they let us start early. Game:We selected the laboratory game. Since I'm a bit competitive on the down low I wouldn't dare give away details of the puzzle so you can finish it and I didn't. I'll just say that it is challenging and really makes you think. I totally felt like an idiot and frustrated because I couldn't crack the codes! Another moment in life when I question all the debt Ive incurred from higher education! The time definitely slips by fast and they let you know when time is almost over. Once time is up they will explain to you what you didn't get. That's nice but also frustrates my group because we were nowhere close to winning! We definitely need half a day to escape that room!! We did hear when it was over that the success rate is 21% and this wasn't even their hardest puzzle! Location: It's super close to Penn Station and a nice walk from Bryant Park. Plenty of food places near by if you want to get your eat on to reinforce those brain cells before this event. Cost:If you get an earlier time slot then the cost is cheaper. We paid about $40 per person plus tax. I don't feel like it's worth that much money especially since the prize when you win is only bragging rights. FYI:You're technically not allowed to use your phone during the game. There is no signal to stop you from trying! You can use your flashlight which you will need!! Having done a number of escape games in the city, I have to say that my experience at OMEscape was up there with the best. We played the penetentiary. The game was challenging, fun, and well designed. Usually, there is a trade-off between difficulty, and aesthetics, but OMEscape you get the whole package. Another plus is their integration of high-tech puzzles. Think switches, lights, sound effects, and motors - truly well crafted and designed rooms and games. I cannot wait to go back and try the other games they have to offer. Staff is also friendly, and helpful. Came here when my brother and his wife were in town. $33 a person. We got some friends together and came here to try out the penitentiary. The puzzles were all pretty standard and nothing too ridiculous or overly easy. I won't give anything away but I will say that some of the puzzles were malfunctioning. On a couple occasions we got the right passcode but the door or lock just didn't open and we had to call the staff for help. My other gripe about this place was that there were a couple switches in our room that weren't part of the puzzle that were not marked as such and caused us to waste time on them. There were also several elements of old puzzles that were no longer in use that were left there for no reason. We got out of the room with some time to spare. My last gripe about this place is that the staff just didn't seem very enthusiastic about working there. I really got the sense that he didn't enjoy his job and that being there was torture for him. When the guy took our victory picture, he didn't even check the photo and later I found out that my eyes were closed. Zero effort. Given the selection of escape the rooms in NYC, I probably wouldn't come back to this place. read more

Escape rooms are considered to be a group activity in which you and a group of others are locked in a room and have to figure out how to "escape". The riddles and clues may be different for each business you visit, as well as the technology and creativity put into their establishment. I base my reviews on the entire experience, the creativity behind the room, ease of escape, immersive-ness, and the interaction with the game master. The rules are pretty straight forward at each place. They'll let you know what is definitely not a clue, they will tell you what not to touch/do and how to contact them (game master) usually via a walkie talkie or sometimes a TV screen that they type on. What I just mentioned, your game master, is the person you and your team will be in contact with during the duration of your game. They'll be watching you from security cameras, which are inputted in every business you'll come across so that they can help you and ensure you don't break/steal any of their items. ---------------- We did two escape rooms here at OME and enjoyed both of them (Room X and The Penitentiary). It was up at the top of our favorites, but price is what knocks it back a bit, as our favorite place was just as, if not more immersive and the price was at the market price. Prices here are $38 dollars compared to others that are $28 usually. Location was perfect. It's relatively close to Penn Station and even Times Square, so if you're a walker like our group was then you're close to a lot of places to stop by at after or before. The people who work here are great, we didn't have any problems with any of our game masters and found them to be very helpful and engaging. The first room we did was Room X and we were accompanied by another group of 4, so in total there was 8 of us. Great room, medium difficulty I believe, but very fun. The second room we did was the penitentiary, which we only did as a group of four instead of 8. The employees were really nice and since we were the only ones booked they decided to give us extra time and make it a bit easier. This is a hard room, but the technology makes it fun. This is the room that does the lasers (no spoiler, it's advertised) so even though we knew we'd probably fail we were really excited to try the lasers out. I don't want to give a lot away, but we really found OME to be immersive and have great technology. The Penitentiary is definitely hard and their recommended amount of players is spot on. We were asking for hints left and right because we were stuck, so bring a party of eight or more! Overall, very happy with our experiences here. Out of the all the ones we did this probably ties as either second or third out of the 11 we did. Like I said, price makes it a bit less attractive because you're paying more, but it's still definitely worth coming to. read more

Room X: The design behind this room was great and adds elements to the game that would (in groups of more than 2) really add to the challenge and fun of the game. We would have liked to try it without the adjustments they made for our small group, as we made it out quite quickly with the modifications in place. Either way, it was fun and there were some neat things to play with. A couple of the puzzles were harder because we didn't think about a few things (a theme for us this day was our lack of observation skills). But this was a great time and if we make it back to NYC we'd definitely do another room here. Theme:We have to admit to not knowing what the them really was for this room because we didn't pay very good attention to that. Whoops... Quality:In great shape and very well organized. We had a few issues with one puzzle, but even that we were able to make work. Difficulty:This was great, although I suspect different when you have more than two people. I have to say this escape room has the best decoration/props in NYC!! other escape rooms are not even close when it comes to theme, story line and flow. Also, great and convenient location, A few blocks away from Time Square. I tried 'the penitentiary' with 6 of my friends who were visiting the city, it was so much fun!! highly recommend this Game! We all "wow"ed when we saw the green laser. The whole process took an hour, and we were so close to beating the game. We were talking about how we could do better the whole night, it was definitely the best group activity we've done for a while. The game master was super nice and professional, kept us informed, and made the game flow so well. Overall it was an exceptional experience. OMEscape is by far one of the best Escape Games out there. I've been to five other escape game places, yet I can't find anything like OMEscape. The clues are linear, which is valuable to successfully escaping. The clues are limited to 3 (unless you're REALLY stuck, in which hints are then given). Fortunately, we escaped with 9 people all with various skillsets. OMEscape sets itself apart from the competition mainly for the added detail and effects (i.e. lasers, fog machine, keypads, etc.). The Penitentiary was the best - separating us into 3 separate cells and allowing us to work together to be freed into a larger room. I am going back this weekend to try out the Laboratory of Biohazard. Oh... and for the cost ($35)... you can't beat it. read more

My first ever escape room was in Ny and it was so terrible I swear I would never go again. Went to Budapest and the puzzles were so well thought out I felt like I was at a theme park. Come back to New York and this was again severely under whelming. Production low, puzzles more obscure than fun, had twelve people and it was all one puzzle at a time it's two people playing and 10 waiting. Even when we finished there was no finale we didn't even know we finished. Over all would not recommend this especially at the price. So low budget and not thought out. Play a video game. read more

One of the most challenging rooms I've had! We went to The Penitentiary room, and whoa did we all have fun. Some of them thought it was too hard and I agreed, but we only had five people and with the help on the staff we conquered it! The people here are extremely nice especially the guy that helped us Jose (I believe). Me being me I accidentally booked the wrong date and yet they helped me change it with no additional fee. My friend and I had so much fun here! We were both new to the whole escape the room experience, but were dying to try it out for a while. I decided to go with OMEscape over the other escape the room companies in the city because of the "high tech" aspect to this place. Without giving too much away, the general format was four connected rooms, with each room having a main puzzle that would unlock the door to the next room. We did the biohazard laboratory room, which accommodates up to eight people, with a recommended group size of four to six. When we arrived, we were told another group of five people had also signed up to do the room. However, when that group came in and heard they wouldn't have the room to themselves, they asked if they could switch to another room for a private game, since the other room was completely empty. This left my friend and me (two noobs) on our own to figure out the game for ourselves. I was a bit worried that our lack of manpower might be our downfall, but we managed to get some momentum going and successfully escape with only two minutes to spare! Once we were out, our game master (Jose) informed us that we were actually the first and only group to defeat a room that whole day. Even more impressive was the fact that we didn't use any of our three allotted hints to figure out the puzzles. Not only would I come back to OMEscape to do another room, but I am already planning another outing with a big group of friends to take on their most difficult room, the penitentiary. The extra couple of bucks that OMEscape charges over other companies is well worth it, since their use of high tech props makes the experience so much more memorable, and really gets you into the setting. Other places may feel more like you are locked in a room doing a board game. Thank you OMEscape for such a fun time. One of the best escape rooms in Manhattan. They have very nicely designed rooms with lots of high tech mechanics. It's not one of those cheap escape Rooms with just puzzles and locks only! I've been to almost 20 escape room games before from Toronto, Canada where this kind of thing has been around longer. They we an Omescape in Toronto as well featuring 5 different rooms which I all tried. Basically you're put into a room with a group of friends and have 60 minutes to solve puzzles and escape I've noticed that a lot of escape games in New York are rather lackluster. They usually have only one room with only puzzles and locks. They don't feature multiple rooms or have interesting mechanics. -Omescape is good because the rooms have a immersive atmosphere -features multiple rooms for one scenario -Interesting mechanics in the rooms You should plan your trips a few days ahead and make your reservations online! The prices won't be cheap but I think it's worth it. It's a fun experience and my team of 5 people made it out of our room within 59 minutes! We only had one minute left...but we made it! Good for building team work! Also don't bring too many people of else people will be standing around lost. But they have a recommended number of people for each scenario so if you follow that you'll be fine. read more
