Had a great lunch on the bar side last Saturday. Got here early enough that we were able to easily grab a table - - place definitely filled up and the servers were swamped by the time we left. To be honest, we were headed to Azul Mexican Restaurant, but didn't realize that they were on vacation :( No worries - - I've been curious about this place, just haven't tried it because, well, no GF bread listed on the online menu. You never know for sure until you ask, so we gave it a try. Well, they don't have gluten free bread or dairy free cheese here, but what they do have is a staff willing to get creative with my lunch - - Rueben Fries!! Imagine a basket of fries loaded with corned beef, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. It was so yummy. Servers were super friendly. Bloody Maria was delicious. Sometimes you just want greasy diner chicken strips. And The Salty Dawg delivered for me. Service was not great. Our bill was brought almost the same time as our food, lol. But the chicken strips basket was amazing. The Salty Dawg drink was pretty good too! There is an additional fee charged if you use card but it wasn't too much. Super cute spot in Waldport. Right on the bay and plenty of free parking. I've been here a few times and always good and well priced. Today, we brought our doggie in, and wow was she (and us) treated so amazing. Excellent service and even a few pieces of real bacon for the pup, free of charge! Lots of space and indoor and outdoor seating. Two big drinks (alcohol), a cheeseburger w/ onion rings, clam strips and chowder for right around $50 with tip. Wow! And everything is hot and made to order. No short cuts at this place. I'd drive here from Newport and skip the tourist line ups, try this gem! read more

Stopped in here on our first night and had an early dinner, our boys had the kids burger and fries, lots of different kid menu options, my wife had fish and chips and I had the Pirates plate which had clams, calamari, deep fried cod, breaded shrimp, onion rings and Cole slaw. The service was great I had a local IPA my wife had a margarita and she did notice that it seemed to lack alcohol, good place for quick bite, nice view of the lack and overall good service and food, we got lava cake and was supposed to be strawberry cheesecake but when we got back to our motel we noticed we got carrot cake which was fine because it ended up being delicious, would come here again for sure. read more

Ok I had to go again and well it's was again awesome. Even had a different waitress and her name was Heidi and she did a great job. I'll keep this short and sweet. So again I love fried shrimp and this trip was a little different because of the clam strips in my order but the way they were cooked was just as good. There's a LOT of those tasty little shrimp morsels. All Cooked to perfection as. We also sat in a booth and the view was a nice big window looking out into the bay. The price did not reflect the quality of food. We should of went to Yahacts just down the road. There was an 4% up charge for using a debit card which was not a credit card. I love this local waterhole vibes! Celeste our waitress was amazing today. So happy to be alive and reminding all of us how much a great smile and kind soul can make someone's day! The double cheese bacon burger was to die for, mummy husband didn't talk to whole time! The 1/2 pound of peel and eat shrimp is literally the best I've ever had! The cod sandwich and cole slaw is top notch. You really can't get any better. Great location! The service was friendly! The atmosphere felt like a ocean side fish & chips place you'd expect to find! I had high expectations given some of the reviews but was disappointed. The food was mediocre compared to so many other restaurants on the Oregon coast. Ordered the salty dawg fish & chips, a crab louie, and a cup of clam chowder. This was the most pathetic basket of fish & chips I have ever been served. The coleslaw had zero flavor. The fish strips (sticks) were small and I was really disappointed that I only got a few french fries, barely enough to cover 1/4 of the bottom of the basket. I asked the server if this was normal and she said yes... :-/ The crab louie was lacking. Not much crab, the greens were not fresh and the plate was way too small which made it hard to eat. The chowder had flavor and a good amount of clams but was on the pasty side of thick (as in not creamy)... We love to eat local but this experience felt cheap. read more

The location is amazing. Large windows with great view of bay. Waitress was wonderful and attentive. Other than that, nothing good. We had a seafood basket with clams and calamari which was chewy and over fried. The crab melt was good, but not $24 worth good. Coleslaw had no flavor. Not worth the money for food. Friendly and casual. We spent the rainy afternoon crabbing in the bay. This was a welcoming place to warm up with a bowl of soup. I thought they needed salt but maybe I got some sea water on my tongue and it changed my palette. I look forward to coming back and trying more. One of my must go to spots when in Waldport. A very local vibe. Friendly service and fun ambiance. My go to order is the peel and eat shrimp or the fried shrimp as an appetizer. During our stay at Seal Rocks RV campground, we drove 10 minutes down to Waldport to explore the town and have lunch. The volunteers at the Alsea Bay Interpretive Center recommended The Salty Dawg, and it sure pays to ask a local! From the outside bay-front (limited) tables & dog-friendly environment, to lively server conversation & tasty seafood, it was the perfect, mid-summer coastal lunch experience. My husband had the sourdough Clam Chowder Boat while I dug into a generous "small" portion of peel 'n eat shrimp, which were snappy & clean-tasting, with a spirited cocktail sauce that immediately cleared my sinuses. We also shared a 2-piece order of fried fish from the appetizer menu, which ended up being planko-breaded halibut heaven. The 12-and-under kids' menu had a great selection, with my son giving his brioche-bunned cheeseburger a "10 out of 10," with fresh-cut fries his parents shamelessly stole from him. Our daughter had the soup of the day, black bean & corn, and asked to sub the salad with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy, which our server graciously responding with, "why not?!" I believe you can get a PBR in can for $2.75 though... Posting cash is king is a little weird! I moved away from the area 8 years ago. I've returned 3 times in the past 3 years & the clam chowder still tastes the same! It is comfort food for me. And the service is welcoming.
