This place is terrible now. I used to love their chicken soup and corned beef. This time the service was terrible, the soup tasted like nothing, and the corned beef had an awful flavor. The soup didn't taste fresh and the broth had a weird color. Will never be back here. There are other delis that are way better than this place. read more

I work very close to this place and I've lost track of how many times I've been inside. There used to be a time when I picked up breakfast from here 4-5 times a week. I try to eat low carb, so I've only had a pretty limited selection from their large menu, but what I've had they do pretty well. First of all, the prices are very reasonable and the portions are mostly huge. Very cheap ($6-10) giant omelets until 10am (the Spanish omelet is great) and large and pretty good portions when you order salads and breakfast dishes. Their specials are also good. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday where you can get cheap tacos with regular taco meats, but also salami (my favorite), corned beef, pastrami, etc... People I work with really like their chicken tacos. They also do very cheap wings every Wednesday, which are really pretty good, meaty, slightly crispy wings. They get really packed during lunch sometimes, but they're always prompt bringing the food out and the turnover is usually high enough that it's not a problem finding a seat a few minutes after you come in. This place isn't amazing, but after dozens of visits, it's been close to 100% consistently good with friendly, fast service, large menu and very decent prices. Decent place and good concept as you order your food at the counter and it is brought to your table. The corned beef is solid but not the best around. Large menu with a number of options that will please just about anyone. The food is always consistent and good. The dining room is on the smaller side and there are plenty of yentas that will stare at you during your meal. Especially if you are a black man such as myself. This place rocks! when I have a cold, I can't live without having a Souper Bowl of their chicken, rice and matzo ball soup. I don't know if I could survie without it! The price is awesome: the Souper Bowl is about a quart of soup and you get two bagels or bialys with it for $6.95. I can eat this for at least 4 meals! I suggest getting takeout, the only downfall to eating in is that it gets crowded and the tables are really close together. I also love the Turkey Rueben Boat sandwich. It's so good! read more

Very crowded and food quality was average. Line went out the door during lunch, but the order came quick after it was placed. For the price I would expect a bit more meat on the sandwich but at least they don't charge a lot for drinks. I ordered the corned beef sandwich and the beef was good and lean. I wondered why this place didn't get too many reviews, but I noticed when I ate lunch there today that the crowd is either very old or very young and it's very busy during the lunch hour on a Saturday. It's a very small place with about 15-20 tables close together located in a strip mall where finding a place to park is not easy, but difficult to maneuver around. It's pretty loud in there with loads of kids, parents and grandparents. Hubby had the matzo ball soup with lots of garden vegetables and I had the beef barley soup which I loved with lots of veggies and chunks of brisket. They serve the soup with your choice of bagels which I didn't eat because we shared a super Reuben sandwich that was super duper good! I love how they slice the corned beef super thin. I also like that you can fill your own drinks and refills as well as coffee and tea. I didn't give it a 5 star rating only because of the tight fit between tables and you can hear everyone's conversation and the parking lot was difficult to maneuver. read more

I've only had one dish here so far and keep coming back for it because it's amazing. Order the Mexican breakfast, it's an egg/chorizo/onion scramble served with corn tortillas, rice and beans. Picking up food last Sunday at the deli, not the restaurant, and ordered salmon pastrami. Woman behind the counter opened up a fresh package of Costco-type salmon pastrami and slapped into a metal tray. Then charged me a ridiculous amount of money for a Costco product. While the food is great and the Geffen's are really nice people, you're better getting your smoked fish from Upper Crust - where they actually smoke the fish and use a local fish house for their products. I've gone here many times with my brother who usually get a bowl of chicken or matzah ball soup. I have tried several things including the tacos when they are on sale, but mostly I order a cup of their Chili Con Carne. Wait, did I say a cup of Chili? The first time I ordered a cup they brought me a bowl! I asked the server if this was a bowl and she said "No, this is a cup". No mistake. I've now ordered it again a couple more times and, yes, you order a cup and they bring you a bowl. It also includes a bagel of your choice and a little tub of butter. BTW, did I mention that it's really tasty too. In fact everything I've ordered there has been really good. Our typical bill for the two of us is under $15. It's always jammed, but the ordering process at the counter moves along and the food is on your table within 5 minutes. I know the servers just bring the food, but don't forget to leave a tip. read more

So be it, I can't fault a place for making money. Great taco specials, good buffalo wings, but for my money, you can't beat the soup. Big fat Latino man doesn't usually seem like the kind of person who goes in for Jewish penicillin but their soup heals what ails you. Honsestly I've worked here before and I can say that this place is one hell of a place to eat, like all restaurants they have their ups and downs but overall once upon a grill has great workers, friendly environment, cheap prices and great tacos. If you go there be patient and relax your food is going to come, it's not like they get a kick out of making your day suck and messing up your food for fun. Your traditional high-quality Jewish deli but with a twist. Since the staff is all Latino, they have the full offering that you would expect to see at a Mexican restaurant. It's close to my home and we've been going there for many years. We have yet to be disappointed. They have the usual chicken soups (but no kasha!), a good Rueben sandwich, great rice and beans, tacos, etc. highly recommended. Carry out good as well. read more

I really love the Cafe so i thought i would try the grill, well very different, the man that took my order was very soft spoken and it was very loud (of course it was loud it was the lunch rush) I ordered 2 avocado tacos and a side of rice and beans. He told me that the avocado was $1.95, I didn't think much of that so whatever, he gave me my total and again I could not hear him but I gave my credit card and didn't look at the receipt until the I realized how long i was waiting (again knowing that it was the lunch rush i didn't mind the wait)...until everyone after me was getting their order which was much more that 2 avocado tacos! 12:01 was the time on my receipt I looked at the time and it was now 12:28!!! FOR 2 AVOCADO TACOS!!! than i noticed my receipt (not itemized just the from the cc) it was $16.83 at that point is went to the counter to get my money back and leave but low and behold my order was finally up. So i took it and left. I got back to my office and was starving, opened my bag and for $16.83 i had ONE slice of avocado some lettuce and a few tomatoes and plenty of onions. Both tacos were like that I was so annoyed!! I almost went back for my money but i didn't, I ate it and it was only OK (taco bell is better and i don't like taco bell). Now if they had told me that they had to go pick the best avocado for the tree out back i would understand the wait and the labor cost, but that was not the case. Oh well, live and learn. read more

My husband had noticed this on one of our drives down Dundee. Our tastes are different so we love finding places that have a large menu. We were pleasantly surprised when we stepped inside - first of all it was really busy and second of all they had a little bit of everything on the menu. I had the rancheros heurvas (sp?) and my husband had a Reuben (see what I mean by different tastes?). We both enjoyed our meals. My eggs were perfectly cooked and my husband raved over his Reuben. Portions were good - not too much to need a to go box but not to little that we were still hungry. Service was fast and efficient and very nice. I think after a year of living in Northbrook we have found our go to dinner spot for quick easy dining. read more

I eat out a lot, and this is my favorite local restaurant. Everything is fresh, plentiful, and cheerfully served. Love the chorizo omelette for breakfast, though everything is excellent. Once Upon a Grill also offers a phenomenal turkey burger - best I've ever had, though I rarely see anyone order it. Sandwiches are great, as are the Mexican offerings. Grilled salami is heavenly - a must order. Some of the best and friendliest service on the North Shore. Love this place. read more

Love the chicken soup. My husband gets mish-mosh, but I love just the broth with veggies. Whenever I get sick, I head there for as much as I can carry home. We used to love Ada's soup, but now that Ada's is gone this is the top! They also make a great tuna salad. Highly recommended! read more
