There was no line, and he had been standing inside looking at the baguettes for a few minutes, by himself. Two staff members came out from the back and did not acknowledge him. A white woman then entered the store and was immediately greeted with "Can I help you?" My husband had clearly been there first. When he calmly questioned whether they intended to skip over him, he was met with defensiveness and told not to speak to the employee's daughter that way -- despite not raising his voice or being disrespectful. Being ignored and then treated as though he had done something wrong for asserting his place in line felt dismissive and uncomfortable. As Black customers, experiences like this are not minor. We value businesses that treat all customers with equal acknowledgment and respect. Unfortunately, this interaction has caused us to reconsider returning.
