I only have a savings account w/ a monthly direct deposit, 5 stars for my personal experience. This is the best way I can support and bank black w/o any fees or complaints. I would not use this as my primary bank just yet because the reviews are overwhelmingly poor. I do enjoy my savings account and the customer service I've received but again, I'm not really withdrawing or transferring cash so I do not experience any difficulty. I will update my review and open a checking account, etc. once I hear this bank has stepped its game up. One United, please read and consider the reviews to invest into a more effective banking structure including customer service staff who can handle issues w/o elevating to upper management. Our goal is to bank black and being black is stressful enough. I'm hurt that all these black people are complaining and have been inconvenienced and seemingly treated better banking white. Banking here solely because it is black owned, but I cannot stress enough for you all to believe everything about mobile deposits. I wish I would have read them before making a mobile deposit because I would have NEVER deposited my full paycheck into this bank. I called myself leaving my credit union completely for OneUnited, but sadly I'm so disappointed, I can only make OneUnited my secondary account. I'm unable to reach anyone to close out my account. I made a deposit a few months ago to support the #buyblackmovement I've not been able to access my account finally got in and saw how this bank has slowly ate up my money with maintenance fees. I just want to close out and get my money out of there. However there is no way to just close out from the website or the app you have to speak with someone and guess what you can't get anyone on the line to assist. I opened my account with One United about 6 months ago. In January, I had an electronic deposit post to my account. I used those funds to purchase a few appliances at Home Depot. The purchase was approved on the Home Depot site, and I went about my business, paying other bills. About a week later, I found that my bill payments had been rejected, and each had been assessed a $37 NSF fee. However, my online banking statement indicated a positive balance of well more than the bills the bank rejected. I called customer service, and was told a CARD HOLD was placed on three of my purchases, totalling over $4000. This meant that, although the money wasn't available to me or to my vendors, it was showing up as positive in my balance and there was no indication of any hold of any type. Nor did I receive any notification via email or snail mail that my funds were being held. Meantime, my purchases with Home Depot cleared by account, while the CARD HOLDS remained. Now, I have about $4000 just sitting with One United that I cannot access, and which were not used for the purpose I intended. So, more NSFs and NSF fees. When I called customer service, I was told that the HOLDS would drop off 20 DAYS LATER, even though the purchases cleared my account using other funds. Needless to say, this affected my credit as bills were returned, and One United collected nearly $600 in NSF fees from me while holding the money designated for these purchases. And now, One United has frozen my accounts because "you authorized too many transactions without having funds in your account." So, I can't access my money (AGAIN) and am wondering where my direct deposits are going tomorrow. While I appreciate the idea of supporting urban development, and this was the primary reason I chose this bank, I do not appreciate urban development being funded by unfair and unclear NSF and CARD HOLD practices. I have requested the hard copy of their policy which outlines these card holds, but have not received it. I received a message from someone in the "Executive Office," but when I returned the call and left a message, I never heard from them again. RUN RUN RUN from this bank. Use Chime, which pays better interest on savings than One United, which has no monthly fees, and can never overdraw because they use the money you have in your account and reject any purchase that is above your account balance. I've sent emails & called. No one answers or responds. You're always redirected to an automated voice message or you're told the personal info you give them is incorrect (when it's NOT). The frustration that I have incurred dealing with this bank has been almost unbelievable--like I feel like I'm on an episode of Punk'd!! Where to begin? I opened this account last summer and planned to utilize it only for savings. However, the occasion came that I finally needed to access a few thousand dollars of that money for a purchase. I call to forewarn a representative that I'm about to swipe my debit card for a large purchase. I'm told that my card has been shut down because it has been reported stolen. Huh??! By who?? No answer...just an offer to send a new card express, but they will waive the $50 fee. How does this type of thing happen with no communication with the account owner?? 1st red flag. Next, I l'm told there is no ability to complete a wire transfer unless I come into the branch. Sooo, the customer service rep didn't have the forethought to look and see that I live in Texas? OK fine. How about an affiliated location that I could pick up a cashiers check? Nope. Alright, I'll just transfer the money to an external account that has been established already....sorry, you can't get money instantly unless you pay $10 for Express--but you have a $1,000 limit for Express transfers. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR ACCESSING My MONEY, MA'AM??! I'm told to do a standard transfer transfer, but understand that it will take 3 business days. Seriously?? Can I use Cashapp, Venmo or Zelle? Not without your debit card. You mean the one you just informed me was stolen? OMG I go ahead and just do a standard transfer....only I've already decided that I don't trust these people with my money, so I transfer it all. 2 business days later I receive a random email that simply says "Unable to reach you". Weird--so I call and wait 20 minutes to get someone on the line. Customer service says they need to verify a large transfer. OK, I verify information for security purposes. She then tells me the transfer will be delayed by another 4 business days now. WHAT?!I ask to speak to a supervisor--she says her supervisor is out and the manager is busy. I ask to be sent to her voicemail and leave her a message. The instant I hang up, I get an email saying the transfer has been stopped for security reasons. Currently on hold again for 20 min so far.....and just got disconnected AGAIN. What kind of 3-ring circus is this where it's OK to play with people like this? I may not be interested in helping Wells Fargo get richer, but I assure you they have my money available to me the minute I ask for it. I will be mainstream and stick with them, Fidelity and my credit union. I don't have time to play these games. I will also be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. read more

Most times folks do not take the time to write a review unless they are dissatisfied in some way. As for myself, I have had nothing but positive experiences with One United Bank. I banked with B of A for 14 years and was charged fee after fee, and it seemed like they purposely posted my transactions in order to create a "climate" for an overdraft. One United does no such thing. I have not had one overdraft or crazy fee or unknown charge. Online banking is great for me as I do not go to branches anyway, and most larger banks are closing branches daily. I look forward to the app improvements and I can honestly say I am relieved and happy with my bank. I am never going back to a majority institution. read more

Stay away... You've been warned. The movement is not worth the headache and frustration, and I've given one united bank two tries. The first time it was terrible; the second time, a complete nightmare. I don't know how they did it, but a check was drawn (by my request) from an account I closed five years ago--instead of my current account--and sent the check to a person I'm scheduled to fly out and meet in three days to pick up a puppy from. At the moment, I don't know what I'm going to do because I can't cancel the flight without penalty and I've already sent my deposit for the puppy; if I don't pick him up, I forfeit the deposit and puppy. UPDATE: If the three customer service reps I'd spoken with--prior to being contacted by Dannie moments ago--could've made the smallest attempt to remedy my situation, I probably would've given this experience four stars. WARNING: DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK! I applied for a Unity Secured credit card online and sent a $500 deposit for the card. A month later, I received an email stating they needed more information to verify my income. When I called them to give the info needed, I noticed how unorganized they are. They transferred me to several dept and after being on the phone for an hour, I hung up. The next day, I called them and told them I changed my mind and to cancel my application and refund my $500 deposit. They agreed to cancel my application and said my deposit will automatically be refunded back to the debit card I used. Well, that was two months ago. I think I have called them over 30 times and every time I call, I get transferred to the wrong dept, and was told they can't find my application. After two months, I am still waiting on my $500 refund. I have filed a complaint with the FDIC and other agencies. I have a copy of everything. I am an African-American and I purposefully picked this bank because it is "black-owned". I am so disappointed with this bank that I will never support anything "black-owned" ever again, no matter what it is! I never had this many problems with other banks. I have had dealings with One United. My father, now deceased, had several accounts in L.A. and I helped handle his business. I was always greeted with professionalism and with a thank you and a smile. After a while, the clerks recognized me by face and always treated my father kindly and with patience. I kept the account open for a while, after he passed (joint) and never had a problem when conducting business or getting questions answered over the phone. I eventually closed my account since I live on the east coast. I support Black owned financial institutions. I'm sure they are working to perfect online banking and customer service. Applied for an Account on 12/17/18. It's 1/7/19, and my account still has not been opened. Called Several times, and I kept getting same answer. "Bank Error working to get it pushed through" Absolutely could not get a clear answer why it was taking so long to have my account opened. With no clear explanation on when my account would be opened from the bank. I just had them cancel my it. I honestly wanted to support the movement, and bank black. One United Bank has very poor service! The Agents in their call center has no professionalism or a clear understanding of Serving a Customer. I'm ending my account today. They held my Pay roll check for 10 calendar days and 5 business days. Very Inconvenient. The Managers will not call you back after waiting on hold with Shina for 34 minutes, I was forced to leave a yet another voice mail. 3 different Managers failed to call me back. It took one agent named Natasha who released my funds from being held. My question is why couldn't any other Agent I spoke to just simply do the same for the sake of keeping a customer happy? Ha! I have been a customer of this bank for less than 2 months. The customer service is obsolete, I became so frustrated with the system not being able to activate my card and not having access to customer service on the weekend that I put it off for another month. I called today to get help because the feature to log into my account was disabled. The representative not only did not help but stated she was going to send me a email to reset my account, no email. Stated that there are no supervisors to talk to, then said that I was going to receive a phone call to reset my account: no phone call received. After I explained to her the lack of customer service, she mocked me by saying "ooooooo" and began laughing. I could not wait to support a black owned bank but now i see this a joke and the joke is on me. I have been with One United Bank for 2 years and have had no issues with them. I use it as my primary checking account for all my transactions and will be opening a Certificate of Deposit soon. If you use the ATM's listed in the app, you will not encounter fee's. Other reviewers say that have encountered "hidden" fee's but that simply has not been my experience. If you read the terms of service correctly before jumping on Yelp to write negative reviews (Crabs in a barrel) you understand what fee's will be charged to your account. I do not live in MA or CA where OneUnited has branches but I have never needed to access any physical branches because the online banking experience is phenomenal. I have contacted customer service a few times, and all of my experiences with them have been great. I will continue to be a One United customer and I recommend them highly! read more

This bank is a joke. I have had my account opened here less than thirty days and I definitely will be closing it once my funds clear! I opened an account here to show support ONLY! I have two other bank accounts elsewhere. I had to receive a paper check from my job due to an error and I made a mobile deposit. For starters I had to call in to increase them limit for mobile deposits due to it being lower than my check amount. I was told the check would be held for 4 days being as my account was opened less than 30 days (no biggie because as I've stated earlier I have other accounts). Got up on day 5 just to find out that it would now take 9 days for the hold to be released . I asked what why and they stated it was due to my account being new. I of course mentioned what was initially told to me and the customer service agent didn't apologize or try to see if there was something she could do on their end to accommodate me due to their LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. Had I known it would take 9 days I would have deposited the check in another account! Now I'm here on day 9 and over 2k is STILL being held for NO REASON. I can't wait to close this account! I've never had to go through this with another bank EVER! They are terrible and the customer service is useless! When all the reviews online are negative, they are that way for a reason. I cannot recommend this bank at all! They lost my business over $10!! In my earlier review I got the card but no pin. It took almost a month for them to re-issue my pin. Whenever I had to make a withdrawal I would have to go to the bank, which was pretty inconvenient but not a deal breaker. The first major straw was when I left my debit card inside one of their ATM's. I didn't realize it until several days later and went in to the branch to report it stolen. I noticed that there were two $4 fees and a $2 fee, so I went in there to have them waive the charges if they were fraudulent. The teller had the nerve to tell me that since I didn't report the card immediately after it was stolen, I would have to be responsible for the charges! I was floored. She goes to talk to her manager and the manager says those aren't charges but fees for using an outside ATM. See, OneUnited has this app that tells you where the surcharge free ATM's are. What they DON'T tell you is that even if those banks don't charge you, OneUnited still does. So after using the machine I got charged $10 for using a "free" ATM. When I went in the branch to have them waived, the teller told me that only a branch manager can waive them. When I asked to speak to this manager, she told me he was on lunch. It was 3:30! She took my message and he called back a few days later. Some days go by and I stop by the Inglewood branch. This teller doesn't even get her branch manager but calls my home branch and tells me to go there. When I finally made it there and spoke to the manager she was unwilling to waive the fees, claiming they were valid. I would have been cool with her waiving the fees as a one time courtesy but explaining she couldn't waive any more and properly explained the policy to me. But the attitude I got after I made several trips to several branches...I just closed my account. I don't need to do business with a bank that can't at least work with me. I tried to do the right thing and give my business to a smaller community bank. They couldn't see the forest for the trees. I was so happy to find a black owned bank to do business with and recommended them to a friend who wants to buy a home. Now I have to call and warn her because heaven forbid if she gets an unexpected fee. The way the branch manager latched on to that fee was like a barnacle. You can keep the $10 if it means that much to you. That small minded thinking will have you forever being a small community bank. read more

But transferring money with the so called use of Zelle is a joke. I send money to my kids frequently and it's not even that much and they always say I've reached the weekly limit. BEWARE THIS BANK YOU WILL HAVE TROUBLE ACCESSING YOUR MONEY! I made a deposited and asked my family to open savings accounts to support this bank. When my sons complained about not having access to their money, I asked them to be patient, and blamed the poor customer service on COVID. When my sons was on vacation and tried to use his ATM card he was unable to do so. I never had my cards activated, so I decided to activate them. After many customer service calls and emails, I was able to activate mine, but only after I threatened to close my account. My husband was never able to activate his card. I had the same experience when I tried to assign beneficiaries. About a month ago one of my son said mom OneUnited lost my money. He had tried to close his account by transferring all his funds to USAA. When he logged on to his account, the balance showed 0 for more than 5 days. Finally, after many calls and being put on hold, his money showed back up on his OneUnited Bank account. That is when I knew I had to close my account with OneUnited Bank. Myself and my children sent certified letters requesting the closure of our accounts. It has been 3 weeks and I still do not have my money. When I finally got in touch with OneUnited customer service I was told to send an email and copy of my drivers license if I wanted to close my account. I did, but every time I sent an email, I received a return email requesting that I go back on OneUnited website and send an email. This happened 6 times. Today I logged on and "no active account" appeared. I have tried all day to find out where is my money. Myself and my children have filed a complaint with FDIC. Today is October 12th, 2021 and I have not yet received my money. I received 2 emails last Friday and 2 today stating that my account is closed. WE deserve better! read more

Bank in 2017 I was so excited to open a checking account to support a bank owned business. In addition to opening up a checking account, I also applied for a secured Unity Visa Credit Card to improve my credit score. I cancelled the checking account without any issues, but the secured credit card as been a pain in my a$$ and has left a very, very, bad taste in my mouth. I used the card from 2017 to 2020 and my credit score did improve; however, when I cancelled in May 2020 I was told that my security deposit would be refunded to the same account that was used to fund the security deposit. It is November 5th and the security deposit HAS NOT BEEN DELIVERED. My mom has a secured unity visa with oneunited and she told me it took her 3 months to get her refund. I've contacted them asking. where's my refund? They told me and emailed me a receipt showing that my security deposit was refunded on July 2020. I scanned all of my banking statements as well as my debit card (linked to my bank account) and there is no RECORD OF IT! I called Chase bank for their assistance in locating this refund, I filed a claim with Chase, Chase reported that there isn't ANY INFORMATION on their system or their account of OneUnited issuing a refund of the security deposit. So, I contacted OneUnited and NOTHING, I was bounced from one customer service rep to another and transferred to one department to another (incorrect departments at that). I requested to speak to a manager and of course the manager did not answer and I had to leave a message. I bet the manager won't return my card. I asked OneUnited to share the account the refund of the security deposit was issued to and they tell me that they can't tell me for security purposes, really? You just asked for my damn SSN, DOB, Mother's guardian name, mailing address, and you can't give the information pertaining to where the refund was sent to. See the problem is OneUnited may or may not have issued the refund at all. If they did issue the refund of the security deposit, they issued it to someone else, I have no record of it, Chase has no record of it, and they claim to have sent it to an account of which they cannot fully disclose this information. I will never, ever, do business with OneUnited Bank ever. These guys HAVE TO DO better, YOU have to due your due diligence in assisting your customers who have done business with you for over 3 years. They suck. Find a way to build you credit with a more established institution that cares about the customer and has a better business model. FYI the security deposit refund was ONLY $250. read more

Whatever you do, do not put your money in this bank. I tried to support this bank, but I can't. Worst experience ever. Card info was compromised and I was told I would receive a card in 7-10 days. No card was sent and these folks had the nerve to charge for an expedited delivery, when I've been without access for over a week. Luckily only half my income goes to this bank. Then, when I tried to transfer from bank to bank you are only allowed 1 expedited next day transfer within a 30 day period. The young lady had no empathy, whatsoever. Didn't offer any suggestions, I couldn't do a wire transfer, they only do those for titles??? Never ever again, I will stick with the big boys, from now on. This is why we fail! Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) received a $12 million bailout even though Treasury Department officials knew it had a record of failing to serve its community's lending needs. Boston-based OneUnited Bank had a history of receiving poor performance evaluations, and officials at Treasury and the FDIC were aware of the negative ratings and discussed them before doling out the loan, according to e-mails and other documents Judicial Watch obtained from the Treasury Department through a Freedom of Information Act request. Waters is accused of intervening to help OneUnited secure a meeting with Treasury officials, even though her husband owned stock in the bank and previously served on its board. After a months-long investigation, the House ethics committee charged Waters with three counts of violating House ethics rules. The committee's report also said Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) warned Waters about the conflict of interest and then advocated on behalf of OneUnited himself. read more

I Called customer Service to inquire more information about their different account options and if these had interests, maintenance fee, minimum balance, etc. The customer service rep I spoke with was Danesha or Tanesha. Although polite, her demeanor was lacking. She hardly answered my questions and I had to reiterate myself several times to ensure that she was still on the line and was actually paying attention; the overall experience with her lack of interest to assist a new customer, made me decide not to bank with them, because it this is the approach as a possible new customer, I cannot imagine what would the experience be once becoming a customer. Making this decision is disappointing because, I have had a high desire for a while to bank blank despite them not having a brick and mortal location in my immediate area. I was told I could use u.s bank ATMs for deposits and that I could use all these surcharge free ATMs for withdrawals since OneUnited do not have many branches.at all. Recently I've now been told information that should have been disclosed upon opening my account. You must open a checking account online with 100.00 to have surcharge free transactions. If you open an account at the branch, you are forced to return to 1of 2 California branches for surcharge free transactions. This was a slap in the face in my opinion. Associates should be more informative and OneUnited should be more considerate. Branches are limited...let all of your customers have the privilege of surcharge free transactions. Six dollars for withdrawals is a ridiculous amount for OneUnited to charge a customer. Disappointed. read more
