Tucked next to a laundromat with minimal parking, this ramen joint is your classic Oahu-style spot--no frills, no fancy decor, just straight-up quality food. It's always busy, which is usually a good sign, and in this case, definitely is. The ramen here is one of my favorites on the island. I wouldn't compare it to Japan's ramen, but I will say it's better than the Japan airport ramen I had once. My go-to order is the spicy miso ramen and takoyaki--hits every time. I live in central Oahu, so making the trek into town means I only get to come here seldomly, but it's always worth it. Service is just okay (maybe a .3 deduction), but I'm rounding up because the food deserves five stars. If you're craving ramen, I definitely suggest trying it out. Nice local ramen joint in Kapahulu. The Asahi beer and edamame is a great starter. I ordered the vegan ramen combo with katsu curry. Haha vegan with chicken! Hubby got the miso ramen combo. I was really craving soup while visiting Hawaii so my friends and I decided to go here for some ramen for dinner. I got the yuzu shoyu ramen and it really hit the spot! The broth was so soothing with an unexpected kick of spice that really added to the flavor of the soup. Portion sizes are decently good and I ended up drinking all of the soup in my bowl. We also shared a few appetizers, eggplant, spicy tuna crispy rice, karaage, and gyozas. All of them were so yummy and good to share with friends. My husband and I visited Onoya Ramen during our stay in O'ahu. It was a perfect choice for a cool and rainy evening. Upon arrival, the restaurant wasn't busy, and we were promptly seated. There are plenty of tables and chairs for dining in. Once seated, it took a while for our server to greet us and take our order. When our server finally arrived, we decided to order everything at once. We opted for the vegetable gyoza, vegan fire ramen, and shrimp won ton ramen. The gyoza arrived quickly, hot and fresh. Ramen perfection! Of the new ramen places I've tried recently, this is probably at the top. We were immediately greeted and sat promptly upon arriving. The service was quick and friendly, and they were quite open to making suggestions and recommending the best options. Looking over the menu, they offer several ramen dishes that sounded fantastic, but ultimately I went with their signature 'tonkotsu spicy', and I am so glad that I did. I added extra chicken to mine, to up the protein on it, asked for no kikurage, and requested a spiciness level of "3". This. was. perfection. The broth by itself was immensely flavorful, with such a great saltiness and spice to it. The spice was right at the level, for me, of being too spicy, but was just right. The noodles were fresh, chewy, and perfectly cooked. The chicken was so delicious, but the real star was the pork belly. The pork pieces were THICK slices, succulent, and melted in your mouth. We came here around 4pm and there was no wait! The parking lot is very tight and fills up quickly but people tend to come and go. We were seated immediately and the service was very friendly and they were happy to answer all our questions. My boyfriend got the spicy tonkotsu and I got the black garlic tonkotsu. He had asked for the spice on the side but they accidentally included it but were nice enough to provide extra broth on the side. Both bowls were delicious and the chicken karaage was very fresh and crispy! The toppings were also great and there was a perfect amount. There are a lot of tables and the AC isn't very strong but it was not bad when we were there since it wasn't full but I can see how it would get very warm when it's busy! Very accommodating and always checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. My little one got the kids ramen with gyoza and I got the black vegan with #1 spice. Our friends ordered combo meals which I thought was plenty in terms of portion size. My vegan bowl hit the spot. Soup was tasty, seasoned well. Although I wish there were more veggies besides corn, garlic chips and nori. Mushrooms would have been nice. If you want some vegetables there are other vegan ramen options that have them like Vegan Tan Tan has bokchoy and Vegan Ramen has "fresh vegetable." Ambiance could be better but I never come for that. I put quality and taste of food first then service and ambiance is last. Our table was very wobbly. Solid 4.5 stars! Came across this place still open at 9pm, as we craved a late soupy noodle dish for dinner after the strenuous Honolulu Marathon. I went with a lighter Shoyu base - the Shoyu shrimp wonton ramen, and sipping the soup really hit the spot, while the chicken pieces in it were more tender than expected! My two buddies got the Black Garlic oil tonkotsu & the Vegan Fire ramen, both of which they enjoyed. Service was quick and attentive. Look for the big signs for Papa Johns Pizza that anchors this mini-mall and drive into the parking lot. Limited Parking out in front but there were a couple of spaces open around 4pm on a weekday when we were there. Worst case, just street park your car. Inside, you'll encounter friendly enthusiastic service with a smile. Study the menu for their many selections or choose your own ingredients and spice level with a custom bowl. We ordered: Tonkotsu Black: Ramen Noodles, Black Garlic, kikurage all on point but the most memorable highlight was the terrific broth - So rich and umami in flavor but didn't feel heavy at all, embellished with a few slices of deep fried garlic chips to provide the exclamation point to this big bowl. I savored every drop! You also get 2 thick slices of flame broiled Pork belly, not quite melt in your mouth tender like a thin slice but still good. The Gyoza was very good as well. Perfectly pan fried on the bottom, the gyoza was the ideal accompaniment to the ramen. The side of Agedashi Tofu was also on point. As for the other ramen choices, the Classic Tonkatsu or pretty much anything here is a safe bet, I'd say.. Verdict: This is one of the better ramen places I've enjoyed! Not only was this one of my top meals during a week in Oahu, but it's one of the best ramens that I've ever had! One of my friends from Hawaii had recommended Ono-ya and it also happens to be #95 in Yelp's Top 100 US Restaurants in 2024. They offer a wide selection of ramen including three signature ones, classic options, several vegan options and a monthly special. If you wish, you can also customize your own bowl of ramen, however our waiter stated that most people will choose one of the ramens from the menu, then make a couple modifications rather than starting from scratch. I immediately selected the TONKOTSU BLACK ($17), and upon first sip, I knew I made the right choice. The pork bone broth was rich and delicious with notes of their homemade garlic oil. It also wasn't too salty which I have found to be the case at other ramen spots before. Two meaty pieces of char siu were so tender and succulent. The noodles were cooked perfectly and I enjoyed the jammy marinated egg. Garlic chips enhanced the flavor even more while the green onion, bean sprouts and wood ear mushrooms diversified the textures. I completely finished my bowl, including every last drop of the broth. The only thing was that the restaurant's air conditioning wasn't operating that day, so it was pretty stuffy inside and therefore not a comfortable environment for eating hot ramen. They had a couple fans blowing, so I'm assuming the AC just needed to be repaired. Despite the heat, it seemed like the employees weren't affected one bit. We appreciated the friendly and quick service that they provided. I found my perfect bowl of ramen here and it's going to be tough to beat! I asked why there was chili oil on it & she told us we can just "scoop it off" ourselves. WTF?!? Finally she agreed to take it back & bring one back with no chili oil. 2 - [UPDATE: This employee kindly approached me on my next visit & apologized, which I found to be sincere. He also didn't smell like cigarettes & shared that he's quitting. Added a star back] Approached the restaurant & there was an employee by the door smoking a cigarette, not even 20 ft away from the door like the law requires. I assumed it was a cook, dishwasher or other back-end employee on break. NOPE! It was the ONLY waiter & he was supposed to be inside working! He kindly opened the door for me but absolutely REEKED OF CIGARETTES while doing so & then also inside while he took my order & continued to wait on us. Gross! As a former smoker, I like many, are appalled by the odor of cigarettes....particularly while EATING. Please enforce a no smoking rule for your waitstaff while working! Also, is the AC broken? Onoya Ramen has been in our lives for a very long time. Remember the Sonoya Restaurant on King Street? Well, this yummy ramen shop is the same store just a different name. You can place a reservation right here on this Yelp app. If you get there early, let them know you've arrived especially if there are open tables. I found out about this place after attending a Yelp Elite Event where were treated to a spectacular array of tasty samples so we would know what we'd like to order right off the bat when we arrived to dine in. The ramen with the chicken soup base highlighted with a citrusy uzu flavor is what I always order, the chicken katsu curry plate is yummy, and gosh darn, that fried chicken is surely moist inside, savory on the outside, and the taste is so fresh-tasting with a squeeze of lemon sprinkled onto the fried outer part. If you add extra ramen, it does not come with a respective soup amount so you might end up with uncovered ramen noodles. The combos are a good deal. You could eat the ramen and take the mini curry (for instance) plate to go. The handmade gyoza not from a package is hot and fresh with a crispy outside and is one of my favorite mainstays here despite being a little too expensive. There is a mini wait area at the door along the inside wall. They have a set of restrooms inside. The staff are friendly and helpful if you need ordering guidance. If you come here often, they will likely remember you! They have a points awards program so make sure to ask before making payment. There is a parking lot with free parking and some street parking in the neighborhood along the street. Zippy's Kapahulu is next door with Kapahulu Avenue bei the main drag. Unfortunately the spicy tuna was a bit bland and underwhelming. Overall I would give this place a 4 out of 5.
