Opened on Sept 2013 just outside of Don Quiote on Kaheka St, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is one of 50+ franchised locations in 10 countries founded by Hitoshi Hatanaka with his original location in Mar 1988 in Hokkaido, Japan. Santouka's specialty is its white tonkotsu soup, made from simmering (never boiling) high-quality pork bones for 16 to 20 hours until the broth is pearly white, and veggies, dried fish, kelp, and other savory ingredients are added and then drained. Santouka's signature dishes are its Toroniku Ramen, or pork cheeks and toppings served on the side, and the diner adding them in when ready; and its Shio (salt) ramen that is a blend of pork and seafood stock with ume to reduce the richness of the stock. It also serves a miso sauce (regular and spicy) and a shoyu sauce; char siu ramen; tsukemen (dipping); hiyashi (cold) ramen; and tantan ramen. In addition to ramen, Santouka serves rice bowls (salmon ikura, char siu, natto); sides (gyoza, salad, ajitma, boiled veggies, corn & butter, kim chee, french fries). We ordered the following on our recent visit to Santouka's: * Toroniku Miso Ramen. There were four thinly large-size pork cheeks, six small-size pork cheeks, green onion, bamboo shoots, wood ear fungus, char siu, kamaboko, sesame seeds. The pork cheeks were very soft, tender, and tasty! * Shoyu Ramen. Generous amount of char siu slices, green onion, nori, kamaboko, ajitama egg, nori, sesame seeds. * Side Order Gyoza. Five pieces of perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy veggies/pork filling in the inside that were delicious with the dipping sauce. The broths for both ramen were creamy and flavorful, with shichimi seasoning used for an extra kick. Noodles were perfectly chewy. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, efficient, and attentive. They took our orders quickly, served our orders within a reasonable time, refilled our water glasses as needed, and processed our bill accordingly. No complaints. The restaurant interior is modern with drop ceiling fixture lights. There is an open kitchen where one can view from outside the restaurant of huge pots cooking the broths. Nice Japanese ambiance. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka holds a number of promotions each year, including its anniversary in mid-Sept of each year and gives away free coupons for ramen. They also celebrate Santouku Day, with "San" means 3 in Japanese, "tou" means 10, and "ku" means day; the date 3/10 or Mar 10 is a special day for the restaurant chain, and the HI location recently offered a BOGO ramen for dine-in customers, which was the reason for our visit. Hours of operation are daily 11a to 10p. Free parking is available in the adjoining lot that is shared with the main Don Quijote Store and other vendors; there is also another free parking lot located across the street. It may be difficult to find available spaces during peak dining periods. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka has become a mainstay for Don Quijote Kaheka for the past 13 years and its only location in HI. Whenever we have a craving for tonkotsu ramen, and especially pork cheeks, we look forward in returning, knowing that this is their specialty. We wish them continued success as a Santoka franchise in HI.

Santouka is a spot that isn't trying to be flashy, but still puts out solid ramen. It's one of those places where you'll leave satisfied 9 out of 10 times. The inside is very small, with around 10 tables and some bar seating, so expect to wait outside to be seated during busy hours. It shares a parking lot with Don Quijote, so parking is never really an issue. The vibe is super casual, nothing fancy, just good, reliable ramen.

Had a great meal at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka! I tried the toroniku shoyu ramen. Its a unique experience in that it doesnt use the traditional chashiu rather uses slices of pork jowl. It was nice to try something different and i appreciate that about it. Portion wise its pretty filling and especially because of the creamy broth. It can feel a bit heavy but that is a style of ramen i do enjoy a lot

After a long and tiring day, this ramen was just what I needed. The noodles were chewy and the broth was flavorful. The delicious bowl of ramen was so comforting. This is in the same plaza as Don Quijote so it was the best of both worlds with ramen and shopping.

Last week's Thursday dinner. We were in the area and just decided to pop in for a quick dinner. It has been a while since we been there. The miso broth was spot on. My wife liked her shio broth as well. The noodles were cooked well, and gyoza was as expected. Service was quick, and the place was clean.

Came in right after the lunch rush (2pm) and there were a handful of seats available. I sat at the first table next to the door and the AC was blowing directly on me so I was desperate for my ramen. I got the Toroniku (beef cheek) Miso Ramen. It was good but just a little too sweet for me. I got the small but I wish I got the large so the ratio of noodles were even with the meat. They do give a lot of meat with your order so that's a major plus. Noodles were good and chewy and stuck with the broth really well. I've heard this is the closest to Japan quality ramen we have. I've been and tried Japan ramen and I can agree, it's pretty close. I think I'll get the shoyu next time.

It's been a minute since I've eaten here, but I needed to go to Don Quijote and still hadn't eaten lunch, so here we are. I got the Small Shoyu Ramen ($1 less than regular) and my son got the Karamiso Tsukemen. We also got a side of gyoza. The shoyu ramen was just enough for me, but it definitely is a small size. It was tasty and didn't seem too salty. My son wanted to try something spicy, and this one had a little kick but not too much where it's unbearable. The gyoza was really good. Service was so quick and our food came out in no time. The servers were very attentive and I'm pretty sure we were in and out within 25 min. Overall good meal and I will be back!

I'm writing this in real time as I'm sitting here eating and leaving a review because it's that good. If you're reading this and you're looking for ramen this is the place you want to go. I wish more people explore this part of Waikiki cause just two blocks from the Hotels. There's all these local restaurants and they're all really good especially a place like this. The staff is amazing on top of everything super clean and authentic. I would highly recommend this place. One of the best ramen shops I've ever been to and one of the best broth noodle combos I've ever had. Very authentic very cheap compared to Waikiki prices so if you're reading this, save yourself the money and get the quality food off strip two blocks away 10/10 would recommend. I got the 12) Toroniku Kara Miso Ramen large Gyoza

Ramen is go to dish when I don't k ow what to eat. This ramen shop is the best , very good prices. But , parking is very hard to find. So gotta be prepared and patient. Very good staff working here. Everyone is very friendly good service people. I really like the decor inside this restaurant.

Will forever be my go to place for ramen on island! It's the consistency for me: flavors are always on point every time. I always get the karamiso ramen with charsiu and a side of gyoza usually. But recently, they have sets now where you can get it with mentaiko rice, salmon ikura rice, or fried rice. More carbs, yay. The service is decent and ample parking because it's right by don que ote. The best thing is, the food comes out fast. Highly recommend 100% :)

The restaurant was full during lunch. I ordered a toroniku Kara miso ramen and a tukemen kadamiso ramen with an extra ajitama and charsiu to-go (around $43 total). Customer service was efficient and friendly. The ramen was tasty but a little bit salty. The charsiu was perfect. They have stamp cards, so don't forget to ask for one.

Food: medium shoyu ramen, green salad and gyoza. This is the same chain in the Mitsuwa in San Jose, CA. Everything was consistent with the San Jose location and fresh and delicious. Service: we sat at the bar seating and service was fast and efficient. Ambiance: a few small tables and bar seating. Clean, nothing fancy.

We visited for a late lunch/early dinner, which turned out to be perfect timing - it wasn't busy, and there were plenty of open tables. The restaurant itself is on the cozier side, so I can imagine it feeling a bit snug during peak hours when every seat and counter spot is taken. Fortunately, we were seated immediately, and our server promptly brought over menus, water, and utensils. Having dined here a few times before, I realized I hadn't yet shared a review to reflect the amazing food they serve. Today, we ordered the Salmon & Ikura Rice Bowl, Gyoza, and Karamiso Ramen, and as always, everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The Salmon & Ikura Rice Bowl had the perfect protein-to-rice ratio, with generous portions of both salmon and ikura. The Gyoza were crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside, and paired wonderfully with the ramen. Speaking of the ramen, the Karamiso Ramen was rich, flavorful, and not overly spicy. I added a dash of shichimi seasoning from the table for an extra kick. The noodles were cooked to perfection, and the toppings - bamboo shoots, pork slices, kikurage mushrooms, and an ajitama egg (additional add-on) - were well-portioned. The egg added a creamy element that tied everything together. Absolutely delicious! This spot is a fantastic choice if you're looking for a meal before or after shopping at Don Quijote. We'll continue to be loyal customers - Highly recommend!

Gyoza wasn't anything special. In fact, wasn't good at all

You can also order your food through a QR code and pay online when you're done. There are also restrooms onsite. Parking is still small and can fill up when it's busy (you also aren't allowed to park in the Church parking lot) If you haven't eaten here before, I would suggest looking on their website at the waitlist to see how many people are on there prior to going there as they can get really busy. You can also put your name on the waitlist online so you don't have to do it on site. They have a really good text messaging system letting you know when your table is almost ready.

Overall, the ramen was very good, but I want to share an important tip about their waiting system so others don't get caught off guard. When your name gets close to the top of the list, do NOT wander away. They will call your name three times, and if you're not standing there, they'll cross your name off immediately. What surprised me was that they start calling names before the current customers have even finished eating or paid their bill. I had made eye contact with the host, pointed to my name and party size, and he acknowledged me. There were still people sitting at the counter eating, and it looked like it would be another 10-15 minutes before seats opened up. I stepped away briefly and came back, only to find my name had already been crossed off the list. The party that was supposedly leaving hadn't even paid yet and was still sitting in their seats. When I explained the situation, the host simply said, "Sorry, your time passed already. I called your name three times." Their sign says they will wait 3 minutes, but in our case it felt more like they called the name three times in quick succession and then removed it. Thankfully, after some discussion, he agreed to seat us anyway. So my advice: once your name is within a couple spots of being called, stay close and pay attention. As for the food, we ordered the Oxtail Ramen (spicy) and the Cashew Pork Ramen. The ramen itself was excellent. The oxtail was tender, although it didn't have a lot of flavor on its own in the soup. They provide a separate bowl with ginger and what appeared to be a ponzu-based sauce, and the intended way to eat it is to remove the oxtail from the soup and dip it into the sauce. That definitely enhanced the flavor. The restaurant is set up with bar-style seating in a half-oval arrangement. Your party will be seated shoulder-to-shoulder, and guests will be sitting directly across from you on the other side of the counter. I'd estimate there are about 25 seats total. Service is efficient, food comes out quickly, and most customers finish and leave fairly fast. For reference, we arrived at 8:38 PM on a Tuesday with 17 people ahead of us. We were seated around 9:15 PM, our food arrived by about 9:30 PM, and we left around 10:00 PM. Overall, this would have been a 5-star experience if not for the confusion with the waiting list. The ramen is absolutely worth trying, but understanding how their queue system works will save you from a potentially frustrating experience.

There was a couple in front of us who said they come here every time they visit Hawaiʻi and that it's a must-do stop on every trip. When you walk in, it's a small place. (They also have a cold vegan ramen) I waited until I tried all three of the warm vegan ramens to post this review. Each one has a different broth but all are topped with charred fresh vegetables that remain crisp yet melt in your mouth. Mmmmm! Love that they have eggplant and kambocha, simply brilliant! And the noodles are medium with a slight curl. They have great texture and a bouncy bite. But let's get to the broths. The first one I tried was the clear broth. It was light yet complex, fresh yet savory. The next one was the tan tan. It was creamy and nutty, rich but not gritty (like some tan tan ramens). The last one was the tomato broth, so unique and distinct. It was tangy yet sweet and aromatic. (note: they serve this with a shaker of Parmesan cheese to use as a topping, makes culinary sense, but I also don't consume dairy so passed on the topping). Now you're probably wondering which was my favorite. I don't have one. They are all different and delicious! No complaints. Only praise for three impeccably crafted dishes cooked with care. I adore that I can come back and eat whatever suits my flavor fancy. They also serve a vegan karaage. Crunchy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside but enough texture to make it feel 'meaty.' They do a great job with this dish serving it with a small salad tossed lightly with a goma-ish dressing. There is also a side sweet chili dipping sauce. I also am in love with their chips. Seems like a quirky item for a ramen menu but once you have it you realize how much sense it makes. Cut thin like air, the potatoes are cooked to golden perfection and sprinkled with Himalayan sea salt. It's a great crunchy starter before a bowl of warm sumptuous ramen and something other than your typical gyoza... Speaking of gyoza, they don't have a vegan option but my hubby tried it and always orders a side. They have options with cheese and garlic toppings too. Hubby has also tried their tonkatsu and shoyu ramen and slurped it ALL up. He was especially impressed with the shoyu ramen. All this deliciousness is enjoyed in an air-conditioned restaurant with an industrial steam-punk vibe. High and low tables accommodates seating for couples to groups. They also have a lovely lanai if you prefer eating outside. Street metered parking is easy to find, and they also have validated parking in the small lot. Junpuu is right across the Blaisdell Center so it is a great option if you're there for a fair, concert, or other event. The servers are courteous and efficient, and I give their playlist 5 plus stars. I usually find myself tapping my feet or humming along to the well-curated songs, classic and retro. If you are Gen-X you will totally understand! I came to Junpuu looking for a warm vegan ramen, I found three. And I'll keep coming back and rotating through their stellar selection of amazingly tasty noodle soups. Well, that and the karaage and chips. If you are vegan or vegetarian this is a MUST-try place. But you don't have to be to enjoy the bowls of culinary comfort that comes out of the kitchen of Junpuu.

This has been one of our favorite places to grab a pre-movie night bite at Ward for years. I was so…read moresad to hear that the classic mall where this cozy joint is located at was being demolished in the name of progress, knowing that this place would be gone. Anticipating that they would be closing in a couple of weeks, we made sure to stop by this weekend to get our fix in. I was so eager to dig into my bowl that I ended up forgetting to snap a picture until after I'd already whacked away at it. Luckily, our server tonight told us that there's a good chance that they will be re-opening nearby in the old Scratch Kitchen location, so hopefully we can continue to enjoy this place in a different setting. My go to has always been their Beefy Wild Ramen. If I'm really hungry I'll opt for their Beefy Wild Beast when I want a pile of their awesome cha siu. My girlfriend likes both the Yuzu and Seabura. We both really enjoy their regular and spicy gyoza. There's always a short wait to get into this place, but it's worth it. Service is quick and efficient, and the food is excellent. I hope to see this place again soon, in a new location.

I thought it would be just Ward Warehouse but now Ward Centre. Now I'm wondering about the Ward Theatre area. Some have found new locations but I'm not too sure about Kamitoku Ramen. I remembered they were selling from their food truck and one time offered their ramen for $5? When they opened their restaurant at Ward Centre, a bunch of us got in for the $8 ramen with a can of soda. They are always busy so I did order take out one time. I was more interested in the appetizers! Crispy beef gyoza, taro tempura and even garlic tempura. They have tofu prepared in different ways. I still haven't tried their Beefy King ramen with all the items on top! I did try their beefy seabura. I want to try here again especially the appetizers before they close this month.

The Good: * One of my favorite dishes is the cold chicken noodles with dipping sauce. It comes on a bed of freshly cut cucumbers & noodles if you wish. Literally is such a clean delicious dish. No one else makes this kind of dish. I highly suggest if you don't wanna eat ramen that day, but you want a good stack of noodles and protein. * The tan tan ramen is the basic good stuff that never gets old. * I have also tried the sour/spicy clear brother ramen and that was real interesting and good, but I gotta be in the mood for that one The Bad: * sometimes it's so busy! gotta wait for a table The Weird: * the menu is getting larrrrrrrrrge, screaming that the restaurant is run by Chinese really lol

Food was decent and Portion was reasonable. What I didn't like was how they kept coming up to our table and trying to take away our plate and bowl as if we were finish. Not once but 3x. Seriously, I still had ramen and char sui in my bowl. Let me finish!!!. It felt like they they were trying to rush us and mind you it wasn't busy at all. To add to it, when did they start automatically adding 15% gratitude for a party of 2. I get if its a big party but for 2 or even if by yourself is unbelievable. Save yourself the trouble and eat at another ramen spot. There is a few good ones around ala moana area or in the food court as well.
