He ordered one of the ramen dishes and I had the udon noodles. Both were huge and came steaming hot. This place is such a hip, cool, and entertaining place! I love how everything here is themed. From the chopsticks, to the napkins, to the takeout bag, when I say everything has the logo printed on it. I mean everything. They also have 2 claw machines in the front that are super cute too. As far as the food goes, I ordered the oola mala pot and my friend ordered the ramen. The oola mala pot had a wonderful soup base that you can tell took a lot of time to make. You get to choose how spicy the food you get too. The eggs are stewed with a little bit of your onsen egg runny middle, which could be a little less hard boiled, but the flavor is fantastic. The meatballs are all store bought and they're standard. The ramen has a lighter tasting broth and the meat is very well stewed. The service here is really good. They hire a bunch of what seems like either high school or college students and they all seem very genuine and eager. This place also does a great job of advertising on social media. Ok, well now there are some realistic reviews. The most competitive place against oola mala is the chain tasty pot off Southside. They sell very similar items, but the difference is that oola has sushi too but they don't have boba tea, but they do offer a selection of cocktails. I think this place is geared towards more western and aesthetic tastes. It's also a little more expensive here than it is a tasty pot, and Tastypot has more food and dipping sauces, whereas oola mala doesn't. We used to love this place for lunch on Fridays but haven't been in a while. Do not be fooled by the 4.5 stars this place used to be amazing but it's gone downhill. We cancelled our order and walked out, I cannot eat raw fish at a place this filthy. I ordered Valentine's Day dinner to go. It was delicious. However I had asked last minute (my fault) to alter my order slightly . I had ordered an appetizer sashimi but I changed my mind and wanted nigiri style. I asked if they can give me nigiri instead. I don't mind paying extra if needed. I was then kind of snapped at saying it's sushi not nigiri. Nonetheless they accepted my request, however there is no need to be rude about it. We have tried Oola Mala several times since they opened and I really like this restaurant. We've tried their Oola Mala pot, beef pot, and lamb pot. We have also tried various sushi/rolls. I have to call out that we tried the Radiant Sunrise Roll, which is more like a couple of ...beef taco? While I laugh a little at it (that it's not a sushi roll), it is really really delicious. We've tried several of their rolls and like how creative they get and mostly are very tasty. In the end, we typically go with the lamb pot and ask for extra extra extra spicy. When it's regular spicy, I find it a bit mild. However, that is purely a presonal preference. The soup base is very tasty, regardless of how spicy you request it. It comes with a wide variety of ingredients. The only downside is that there is not something to keep the soup hot the entire time, which is traditionally, what hotpot is about. So I do find myself rushing to finish up because I like my soup very hot. But overall, when I am craving for a nice 'pot' of soup, Oil Mala would come to mind. read more

Came here for lunch on a Saturday late afternoon. I am a little conflicted between getting this place a 3 or 4... I'll give it a 4 for now since I haven't tried the full menu. Ordered the steak skewers appetizer, chicken fried rice, and the sushi love boat for two. The steak skewers were really good. Super tender and flavorful. Bummer that they only give you three skewers for nine dollars. The chicken fried rice was also very good. It tastes a little different from your typical Chinese takeout fried rice - there's a richer flavor in there. And the portion size is pretty decent. The boat came with 12 pieces of sashimi, eight pieces of nigiri, a shrimp tempura, roll, rainbow roll, and tuna avocado roll. It was a lot of food for two people. The variety presented is really good, and the fish is relatively fresh. This is definitely not the best sushi I've ever had though and I probably wouldn't get sushi here again. I have yet to try the hot pot and Ramen, which have a pretty salient presence on their menu. I would be willing to give this place another try, but I think there are better places in Jacksonville for sushi. read more

Came to check out this new restaurant in St. Johns. What a welcome addition. The inside makes you feel like your in a big city restaurant with the modern decor and furnishing. The food was delicious. We started off with Tuna Tataki and it was perfect. For our main course, I had the tonkotsu ramen and my wife had the veggie healthy hot pot with ramen. Both were seasoned very well and the broth was not oily like we have found at some places. We also ordered a side of the spicy crunch tuna roll. The service was excellent and everyone was friendly. Oola- la Mala- la has their food singing, "don't you wish your pot was hot like me"? The hot pot was so flavorful and large enough to share. The awesome server highly recommended the fried rice and it was "shrimply" the best I've had in years! They offer many cocktail options which is something you don't typically find at a Japanese sushi restaurant. I love my plum wine, but a variety is always nice! We started with the Gyoza Pork steamed as an appetizer. I know them mostly as pot stickers. They were very good as was the sauce that came with them. Husband ordered chicken fried rice and his serving size was large. Our son had the Miso soup, California roll and Philadelphia roll. I ordered the spicy crunch tuna roll.
