Where do I start? I moved to this area from Detroit and I couldn't find ANY Chinese restaurant with any personality or great food for that matter. I was used to the greatness of Detroit area Chinese food like Chin Tiki, China Jade and so on. After searching around online and trying just about everywhere over the past year, I finally found Pagoda online and thought we'd try it. We didn't know this going in, but the restaurant is divided into two sections. One is a "regular" Chinese restaurant and the other is the tiki bar. The staff was SO nice and very cool. They kept apologizing that the tiki part was booked up for the night. We ate dinner on the regular side, then they were all excited to tell us they could fit us in the tiki side after dinner. They even took our leftovers and put them in the fridge while we went over to the tiki side for drinks! All the way around, this is EXACTLY the place I've been searching for. The Secrets out and we finally got to go visit in the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room and I am among the glee club. I ordered the zombie cocktail to start the night and it sure lived up to its name and you don't need 2 for sure. I freely than ordered off the menu and enjoyed a spread layed before me. The first were the deep fried pork dumplings. A bit of sweet ness in your first bite and before I knew it I ate the whole thing..very good. I followed with the fried chicken potstickers. These were amazing!. Cantonese chicken wings were next but that was my "put it in a box to go" item. I did also enjoy a sweet n sour chicken that was so good, not overtaken by veggies but just enough bell peppers and pineapple.Very Tasty.. This place is a true experience and the service was great! John & I have been talking about coming here for years- why we wait, I don't know?! They had plenty of take out orders- but we were alone eating in the dining room. Our server apologized- no no, we understand. We went all in on the Dim Sum menu- because why not? John got egg drop soup & loved it! "Very eggy" Pan fried pork dumplings- very flavorful & delicious (a known item) Shrimp rolls- also a known item, but packed full of shrimp- very good Fried shrimp ball- this was new to us- very good, again packed with shrimp. I could see us ordering that again Steamed pork bun- this was way different than anything I've tried. Sticky bun, hint of sweetness with a spoonful of pork inside. Don't be like my husband- there's a tiny parchment on the bottom... Remove that. I laughed for about 15 minutes, tears streaming, when he realized there was paper on the bottom- that he ate... I think he was trying to get me to choke to death via laughter. And! Roasted duck- ok, I LOVE duck- so this was a no brainer. Wonderful meat. My boyfriend and I went here for Thursday night dim sum in the Secret Tiki Temple. It was the first time for both of us but a person recommended it to me a couple of years ago. This was a really fun place and I will definitely be coming back with girlfriends. They have a weekly Wednesday night party with music but I'm interested in coming back for happy hour. Happy Hour is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday 5-7 PM. $6 Cocktails: Mai Tai, Jungle Bird, and Painkillers $3 Dim Sum: Pork Siu Mai, Crab Rangoon, and Shrimp Roll What we drank: The Old Shanghai, Painkiller, and Chrysanthemum tea. *Drinks were delicious. Hands down one of the best Chinese sit-down eateries in Jax next to Peony's. Serving authentic Cantonese-style food family style in the south side area with its wooden beams, celebration of Chinese decor, and neat little tikki bar room in the corner, Pagoda brings back traditional Chinese food into the running of delicious cuisines. It's always hard to find Chinese restaurants that aren't the usual quick fast-food takeouts, especially here in Jacksonville, and when we stumbled upon this place it was like hitting gold. My husband and I went there twice and both times had a great experience. The quality of care in the food was noted in eat bite. We ordered the roasted duck, dim sum dishes and a custom dish - fried red snapper sitting in a pool of delicious dark sauce topped with sprinkles of ginger and green onion. By the end of the lunch, I felt like I had to be rolled out. I do recommend visiting during lunch hour as I've heard that's when the quality of the food is best and it's much more quieter in the restaurant. The restaurant was the most horrible. When you make a reservation, you feel like you can only get one because they're so busy. But in actuality, as you read all the reviews, they only seat like five tables in the whole restaurant. It was the worst service- our waitress, who I think was one of the owners, did not know how to speak English. The food was horrible. All of our meals were delivered at different times over a period of two hours. They had no beer even though they had like 15 different types of beer on the menu. They finally found some that were hot. They had no cold beer. All of the beer was hot. Don't waste your money or your time. They are just really good at marketing. I was really afraid about what I might have eaten after I left there. Seriously there were only two workers and I think they used a microwave to make everything. Gross! read more

It's New Years Eve and I decided to stay home instead of going out celebrating with my friends. I just wasn't in the mood to party this year. But regardless if that, I did plan ahead of time as to what my last meal of the year would be...Dim Sum. I had already known that Pagoda had dim sum but I wasn't sure if it would be as good as the other well-known dim sum place. Willing to take a chance, I checked out BiteSquad and looked over the menu. I didn't check ahead of time to see if they were open, I just figured they would have normal hours since they had been open for Christmas Day according to their page. I ordered three items: Pan Fried Chive Dumplings, Beef Tripe with Ginger Sauce, and Poached Baby Bok Choy. The bok choy was an automatic "get-it" for me as I love it. They were open, my items were delivered on time, and I was ready to eat. There were 4 dumplings that came with two chili soy sauces. I passed on the sauces and ate them plain. They were good, tasting like literally veggies wrapped in a thin layer of dough. Next I went to the beef tripe. This was swimming in the ginger sauce with the addition of shredded carrots. The tripe was very tender and didn't require a lot of chewing, which I like. Then last but not least was the bok choy it it's own poached juices. Nothing phenomenal here, just good tasting Chinese cabbage that I happily ate and felt healthier eating. All in all everything was great and I was nice and full afterwards. Pagoda is a treasure! I'm ashamed I'm only now reviewing it. It's an old school Chinese food and dim sum joint, complete with a gold Buddha statue, dimly lit red ambiance lightning, a secret tiki bar, and a few stuffed pandas thrown in for good measure. I cannot wait for this pandemic to end so I can eat in and bask in all its glory. They don't make 'em like this anymore. I've tried their pork shu mai and pan-fried chive dumplings. The dumplings in particular are very good. They're more sauteed than what I'd consider fried. Little pillows of chives, egg, and shrimp come four to an order. Tonight I opted to forego the shu mai in favor of two orders of dumplings to go with my house fried rice. It was my first time trying their fried rice. Pagoda's includes bean sprouts, which I sometimes have to add at other places. Most striking is the use of chunks of actual chicken breast. Usually fried rice comes with nondescript pieces of chicken so kudos to Pagoda for going with white meat chicken instead of taking a shortcut. The tiki bar sits off to the left upon entering the foyer. Despite COVID, it seems to still host a fairly regular crowd. One night in particular when picking up takeout, the bar was full as if we're not in the middle of a pandemic but to each their own. I'm itching to try it but for now, it's just not worth the risk. Being generous with 2 stars. As we parked, I notice the outside. It's not the most well kept. We still went in. The building has great potential, unfortunately as we walked in I got an interesting smell. But we still went in. We ordered chicken wings, sweet and sour chicken, egg drop soup and dumplings. I'm on a mission to eat at all the dim sum places in Jax. I'm here at Pagoda on Baymeadows and it was...fine. I mean, it wasn't bad, but in comparison to others it lands solidly in the middle. Some good things: the dim sum is made to order. Everything came out hot and fresh. The staff is super friendly and warm. Here's what we had: (1) pork congee, bok choy, and deep fried shrimp balls. The shrimp balls were great. (2) Chicken feet in black bean sauce. (3) Salt and pepper shrimp. These were a bit cumbersome to eat. The whole shrimp was tempura battered and fried, head, peel and all. Fun little secret tiki bar like place. We went here with friends and had a great time. Very limited seating and you can only stay an hour and a half, but very fun place for craft cocktails and appetizers. They will be opening up the restaurant part again soon but definitely worth a visit now if you want a little novelty. read more

I visited Jacksonville in January 2020 and was searching for a tiki bar to properly celebrate my birthday. I did a search for 'tiki' using Google maps, and came across the Pagoda House and it's 'Secret Tiki Temple.' The restaurant has been around for 15 years and is still owned by the Tam family. The tiki bar is fantastic and has only been around for four years, though you would never know how new the bar is judging by its very authentic decor. My hats off to the owner's son, who put the tiki bar together and cultivated just the right look for this bar. There is even a VIP area behind a bamboo screen with a private nook in which to sip your rum drinks. I was there early in the evening, around 5 PM, and we were taking care of personally by Julia, the food and beverage manager. She was wonderfully attentive and clearly knows the history of tiki culture. She gave us a history of the restaurant and was a fantastic server. The food was great, by the way. Everything was very fresh and the fried items, including the crab rangoon and spring rolls, were light and tasty. I would fully encourage anyone in the Jacksonville area to visit the Pagoda House. read more

Super bland Beef rice noodle rolls: me personally it's not a dish I like but I will say it's authentic. Hubby liked it. Shrimp rice noodle roll: again, their shrimp was fresh and the rice noodles are the right texture. It was ok. Not the best I've had but not bad. If they just tweak their soy sauce it will be a hit for me. All in all if we lived closer I'd visit this place more and try other dishes. It feels like it was taken from a page of a Bruce Lee movie and expected a fight would broke out with chairs flying and Bruce Lee would come to the rescue Anyway , All my boys were hungry after a a full day of activities on a Saturday. A classic Chinese restaurant with dim sum. Space looks partly updated with some pretty cool graffiti art murals on interior walls, however furniture is old, well-worn and surfaces quite sticky. Tables, chairs, soy sauce bottle, and hot mustard container ... all sticky! Plates, silverware and cups are very much dingy and overly used and may be time for replacing ALL of it. Server was sweet, but coughing ... bad :/ Food was pretty good though. We ordered the pork spareribs with black bean sauce, pork shumai, shrimp dumplings, rice noodles with shrimp, steamed Chinese broccoli and sesame balls. I think the food would've tasted better and had been more appetizing if the plates on our table looked fresh and clean. We also didn't drink their iced water since their old dingy cups made it look like iced bucket water. 2.75 stars, but could be an easy 3.5 with new plates, cups and silverware or even a 4 if the environment was no longer sticky. Everyone in my family loves Pagoda. My husband and I love the dim sum - he's a fan especially of the baked pork buns and the Singapore mei fun noodles. I love the honey walnut shrimp, egg tarts, gai lan, and fried stuffed taro. My 7 year old loves the lo bak go and pineapple buns. My youngest loves the char siu (and also the pineapple buns!) A couple of items are weekend-only, so know before you go. The people running this place are kind and friendly. It reminds me both of places I ate in Hong Kong as well as the Chinese I grew up eating in California (I'm talking family style tables with turntables and everyone drinking tea...memories!) I almost never ever write negative reviews as I don't like to hurt any restaurants. It could have been a bad day or whatnot, but sadly to say this place needs to improve drastically. I wanted to take my son out to a different dim sum place, so a friend had suggested this place. I have to say never will I ever go back. I just sat there while my son and husband ate. Even my husband barely touched the dishes. I totally understand there are diff styles of cooking. A lot of their dim sum was crossed off (meaning they do not serve it) so that's a huge disappointment. What little they did have was a huge letdown. Walking in and first look around, the place was clean, there were a total of 4 tables with customers. 1 was ours, another was a gentleman that came in right behind us and 2 other tables. We sat ourselves since that's what one of the lady had instructed us to do. We waited for a few mins before she came and brought us our menu, and our drinks. We waited and waited and waited for a good 10mins for her to come to take our order. Let's just say I was about to get up and pay for our drinks and leave if she had not come back for another 10 min. Mind you the gentleman that came in behind us had already received his food and he was already eating while we sat waiting on the lady. As we were about to get up she finally had shown up. Took our order and the waiting game starts again. We ordered steam bbq pork bun, stuffed eggplant, shrimp fried rice, deep-fried shrimp dumpling, sweet n sour pork. Deep-Fried Pork dumpling( I will post a photo of what it is supposed to look like from their site and what we got to compare. Ours did not even look like it was deep-fried at all. And we ordered char siu chow funn. Because our order was large we knew there would be a wait since it was made to order (so we thought). Break down: The steam bun, The bun itself was extremely dry and hard. The meat inside was dry and the coloring is pale. Deep-fried Pork Dumpling, I don't even think it was deep fried since it was soft and mushy.. and had a lack of coloration compared to the photo on their site. Shrimp fried rice looked like rice you would get from one of those fast-food take-outs. The rice itself was dry only moist due to the soy sauce, even their steam white rice was very dry and starchy. How do you mess up steam rice? The sweet n sour pork well the sauce was totally watered down. Deep-Fried shrimp stuffing was very dense, the wrapper itself was like a mochi style which was good. Stuffed eggplant was the only saving grace out of all. Now that my son and husband liked it. When our last dish came out it was the char siu chow funn, a huge disappointment. There was hardly any noodles! The noodles that were there were way overcooked to where it had literally melted away. Yes, if anyone knows how chow funn noodles are it can be overcooked and it does melt. While there were large chunks of char siu but where was the noodles to go with it?. The presentation when it first came out was nice but once you start to serve the noodles it was just mush. Bits n pieces and starchy. (a sign of overcooked with this style of noodles. Because the noodles itself was overcooked the dish had a starchy taste to it. I expressed and showed our waitress and she kept on blaming it on the cook, then said well we're in Jacksonville so the taste and style will be different. Ahh no, it had nothing to do with the taste but the outcome of the actual dish itself. I have had dim sum from different areas of Jacksonville and it was not as bad as this. It got to the point where I had to talk in Chinese to make her understand that it was really bad. Then and only then did she understand where I was coming from. While this was a disaster we still left a tip, as they did provide the service whether it be good or bad, the wait staff was still working no fault of their own. read more

If you like soup dumplings this place is a must go! But don't go late because they will be out. This restaurant is the only place in Jax that makes soup dumplings like you can get in New York. We came here to check out the Tiki Room, however that was only by reservations. So we still decided to stay and grab a few appetizers and drinks. First off the place is run down. The tables still had dishes from customers that had left. There was only one server for the entire restaurant, who was clearly overwhelmed with all the customers in the restaurant on a Friday night. The food is very very mediocre. There are much better mediocre restaurants in Jacksonville. We ordered a 4 dim sum dishes and they were not good at all. The Prok Shu Mai still tasted raw, whatever the blend was, just seemed off. The spring rolls had to be Walmart brand that you would find in the freezer aisle. The server gave us a free fried rice because she took 25 minutes to take our drink and food order. However, the rice was literally just rice mixed with soya sauce, it was just awful. You can get drinks from the Tiki Bar but they are over priced, you're essentially paying for a funny cup to sip your drink out off. I would highly recommend others places if you're looking for $10 fancy drinks. This is not the place. read more

I must say that I this is probably the best Chinese food I've found in Jacksonville. And I don't even like American-style Chinese food. Their General Tsao's chicken and tofu are food. My fav is the braised tofu with veggies. They say that they don't allow changes, but if you call and ask really nicely, they'd like you substitute stuff. Soooo, I decided to give Pagoda another chance yesterday. I came and and ordered 3 orders of Cantonese wings and 3 orders of shrimp fried rice, totaled around $60. I've been eating here as long as I can remember, so I know that the food can be really good, even with the expensive price. The young lady who took my order was nice, but very slow and kept repeating my order. It makes me wonder what happened to the older couple that always took my order. She quoted 20 minutes on the wait, and said that I could sit and wait, but when I said I'd sit in the car, she took my number down and offered to call when my order was ready. I went and sat in the car because I was on an important phone call and needed to finish it. After about 30 minutes I came in, and she asked me the name on my order (weird, right?) no one else came in there that I saw were waiting for an order to go. I told her my name, and was made aware that my order had just come up. I needed to use the restroom, but only one stall was available (the other was out of order.) my whole order was in one bag, which was odd, so I checked my food. The rice was in separate containers, but all the wings were in one container. 18 wings were in one container, because most of them were so little, they shouldn't have been served. I have never received wings from this restaurant so small in all my life. When I brought it to the the young woman's attention, she said "but they're good though." I was very upset and mentioned that I needed to feed an entire family with this meal, but she basically ignored me and told me she needed to take a call. Now I know they have that Tiki lounge in the back, and I'm quite positive, that wings are in the menu in there. They did not receive the wings that I did. Whoever is running this business needs to bring it back the old school Cantonese feel, where you can get authentic food and know that everything will be great. For the price I paid, I was very dissatisfied, and I don't think I'll be returning after that. The rice was very good. The small wings didn't taste fresh, some inedible. My family decided to dine here tonight and I had an odd experience. The entrance to the restaurant was so cluttered with overgrown bushes and different miscellaneous items were scattered throughout. I even asked "is this where we go in?" because it was not obvious or inviting. And again when walking into the building itself, I almost felt claustrophobic because of how many different "decorations" there were. It was really excessive and my whole family felt pretty closed into the area. I was very shocked to order a diet coke and have her bring me a warm can to the table- again, odd. My boyfriend and I ordered 2 egg rolls, chicken lo mein, sesame chicken & general tsos chicken. The egg rolls were underwhelming and pretty dry and the sesame chicken was way too sweet, it was hard for me to eat. The chicken lo mein tasted amazing but was pretty small for the price. Despite that, the service was good and the lady who waited on us was very sweet and friendly. Our total came out to almost $80 after they charged me an automatic gratuity fee of 20%. Had the opportunity to visit Pagoda. I know that there are some good reviews posted, but I was sorely disappointed. Here's a rundown of what I had off the Dim Sum menu. Singapore Mei Fun - probably the best dish I had but a bit heavy on the curry powder. Curry Powder? Tasted of raw spice. Chicken Shu Mai - frozen chicken taste with some chunky bits. Probably tendon. Not good. Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaves - totally weird. Rice was stuffed with a chunk of greasy sausage and some ground pork tasting of cheap breakfast sausage. Had a Mai Tai that tasted like sweetened battery acid. Cheap sour mix tasting like if you dipped your finger into a packet of lime kool aid and licked it. Large pucker factor. Now I will dine on tums and take some Tylenol for the MSG headache. I think the owners have just given up. No love in the food or drink. read more

The food at Pagoda was incredible. The place looks kitschy and like it's stuck in an 80s Chinese restaurant, but it made it all the better. Service was a bit slow, but there were quite a few people on a random weekday lunch day. I loved it and am looking forward to my next visit. read more

I kind of feel bad for this place, it has a lot of potential, but there are a lot of flaws. When we came in it took a while before we got to officially order and get our drinks. We didn't mind that. We were given plates that had dust on them, we asked for new ones and were given plastic ones. Then after we were done we asked for the check and had to wait 30 minutes for it. They seemed short staffed, only one person was working the sit down area, running around and catering to everyone. She had to repeatedly apologize for the wait.
