I had my first massage with Sherri which was amazing on all levels. Unfortunately, the therapist I booked with on another occasion was not just slightly less skillful, but significantly so. Her pace was rushed, her touch rough ( I felt her nails dig into my skin many many times), and she managed to throw my limbs over to the side when she finished one of her odd stretches in such a careless way. She was kind and professional outside of the massage, but in other respects It was the exact opposite of the other massage I got here. I feel like I wasted my money. I haven't had a massage in 4-5months and my body was definitely in need of kneading. Due to recent operation, I wasn't allowed to walk for a while so I became extremely de-conditioned. Being unable work out, eventually I just became a walking knot. With my walking and driving privies back I made the first appt I could. Other Yelp reviews lead me to Opal. My other massage place was too far for me to venture on this occasion. The hours here are very customer friendly. I mean who opens 9a-9p everyday? Nobody ever. So you can definitely have an appt time easily. You do take your CC # as there is a "late cancellation" fee. It's located in "No-Park Slope" so make sure you allow plenty of time for parking. Luckily for me, I snatched a spot right on the same block. The train is very close by so consider using that if you can. It's inside of the Brownstone buildings. Quiet and clean facilities. I like that I was able to have a word with my therapist regarding my expectation from the visit. Being that I was post-op, I wanted more focus on my injury area vs other body parts. (Actually, this is why I came vs my other massage place. Due to language barrier, I felt this would have been lost in translation at the other place I normally go to for general massage). My session was 70mins long. The eucalyptus infused towel she placed by my face was heavenly. Other option was lavender. Ofcourse the minute she started my brain made like a shepherd and got the flock outta there...I was out! night night. I did wake up when she got to working on my injury area. It hurt but it was the kind of tolerable muscle pain you feel when you are stretching/kneading a very tight area. Overall I had a pleasant serene experience. read more

I've had some really great massages here and the masseuses I have had are really skillful but... the last time I was there I saw not only a bunch of mouse glue traps (both inhumane and disgusting) AND MOUSE SHIT. Highly recommend! I've had a lot of professional massages over the years, in cities all over the world, largely to treat persistent back pain and shoulder tension. My massage with Shama here at Opal was one of the best I've had. Thoughtful, targeted, patient, with excellent communication to be sure I was getting what I needed. She found the tightest spots and trigger points and really took her time with them, allowing for release there and elsewhere to occur, rather then simply giving a few squeezes and moving on, as often happens. She asked throughout the session what I might like next, offering options she thought would be most helpful, while giving me a say in what we focused on. Of course, even the most skilled practitioners, as Shama clearly is, aren't mind readers and can't feel what you're feeling. So being sure to voice when you want a change in pressure is key to getting the best experience. And Shama was on point with responding immediately and then following up with check-ins. I've been going to Opal on and off for 10 years now. I've had massages in different countries and various states but there is nothing a massage with Sherry. Total relaxation! Any sore muscles and stiff shoulders will be long gone. Due to covid-19, you'll have to keep your masks on during the entire massage but that won't really make any difference. First time client. It wasn't that I had a bad experience necessarily. It's just that the massage did nothing for my back pain. I usually choose Chinese massage places or even self-massage with therapy balls, mainly for affordability, but the tightness in my mid-back had gotten so uncomfortable that I thought I should see an LMT. Before the massage, I pointed out the area giving me trouble. The massage was relaxing and felt good in the moment. (Though there were some moments of discomfort.) The massage therapist (forgot her name) was very conscientious of anything I might need. There were oils (so much oil) and hot stones and aromas, and I left feeling relaxed. But I also left with a knot still in my back. I've had more effective massages for half of the price. I'll keep looking for a place that can address my back pain, I guess. read more

I booked a last minute massage here yesterday for my birthday and it was incredible. First, it was awesome that they had availability because I literally called 2 hours before the available appointment. My massage therapist, Edie, was wonderful. She listened to my problem areas, asked me how hard/light I like the pressure to be, and continued to check in about that throughout my massage. In the past, I've been shy to tell the therapist whether it was too hard or too soft, Edie made it easy by inviting my comments. This place was clean, peaceful, no frills (which is perfect because the fancy spas are soooo not me), and relaxing. I can't believe I got a 70 minute massage for $100. And the massage I got was literally the best I've ever had. She was so attentive to my problem areas but balanced it by making the rest of my body feel seriously relaxed. She asked if I was okay with the music, offered lavender or eucalyptus to put under my face to have some relaxing aromatherapy, she used hot stones that at first felt like wax, I didn't know WHAT she was doing because it was incorporated into the rest of the massage but it felt soooo good! She used weighted heat packs on my back and feet and under my head (it felt like maybe rice sacks). And at some points during the massage it felt like she had 4 hands. o I was amazed. I really hate to write this review, as it feels so passive aggressive bc I could not express myself after the massage was over about how dissatisfied I felt. I will leave the massage therapist's name out of this review as I thought maybe she was somewhat depressed and unable to listen to what I wanted from her. I asked for a deep tissue massage bc of specific pain, and what I got was shaking and rubbing. At one point she was holding my head with both her hands -- not rubbing it - just holding it for what felt like 2 minutes, I opened my eye to see if all was ok, and she looked down at me to say "it's not all about rubbing and pulling"... but if I'm paying for the darn thing, why shouldn't it at least MOSTLY about rubbing (not pulling, and not holding my head for 2 mins!!). Furthermore, she had long nails which dug into my back a couple of time. I'm not into writing bad reviews. But next time I'm just going to pay a lot less for a massage, that way if I feel dissatisfied, at least I won't feel like it was such of waste of time and money. The only reason this isn't a 5-star review is that I've only been there once, and I don't give 5 stars on the first visit. This place is freaking awesome. (Note: this was my first professional massage). Imagine if you will, two ladies in desperate, desperate, desperate need of a massage. One works in a physically-demanding job involving carrying fat people up and down the stairs (don't ask), and the other get knots and tension headaches. They promised themselves a couple's massage at the end of a transcontinental road trip six months ago, and never got it. Imagine sore backs, sore shoulders, sore feet. Imagine tension built up in places both of them feel but can't describe. That was me and my girlfriend three weeks ago. We had been looking for an affordable, discreet, friendly place to get a couple's massage for the past 6 months. After sifting through reviews on Yelp, we settled on the Opal Center. And oh, Yelp, you have not let us down. I'm body-shy. I'm tall, and I'm overweight, and I don't have the best self body image ever. I'm very conscious of the looks people give me on the street, of the way people react to me in conversations. But Opal Center made me feel completely at ease, which is important--especially because this was the first time I went for a professional massage that wasn't part of a physical therapy regimen for a specific back problem. We called, made an appointment (note: receptionist only on-duty from 10a-2p, but a therapist called us back between appointments and scheduled. No need to confirm later--just come in 5 minutes early. Great. We arrived a few minutes late rather than early (damn BQE...), but were greeted warmly and soothingly by Janet and Carlos, our masseuses. Everything about the place put me right at ease--the soft lighting, smooth voices (I'm pretty sure Carlos has an accent, and I want to say English, but I'm not exactly sure--his voice is so soothing that you can imagine it melting like butter in your ears). The place even smells amazing--earthy and homey, without being anywhere even close to overpowering. Everything about this place is subtle. We were both asked what our problem areas were. I told Carlos about my prior back issues, and about an area of muscle under my shoulder that had been inexplicably hurting in the weeks leading up to the appointment. We were led into a room that was dim, tastefully accented, with dark walls. There was enough light to see (barely) but it was dark enough to be very soothing--seeing a pattern here? Anyway, we stripped down, and a minute or two later the masseuses came back to begin the work. And it was *good*. Baby, I love you, but no one has ever touched me that way. Carlos asked me what kind of scents I preferred, and I told him citrus--orange or grapefruit. He came back with a bottle of homemade grapefruit-scented massage oil that was incredibly subtle--I only really noticed it when he reached past my face to massage my neck from the front and later when I curled into bed, but when I *did* smell it, it was amazing. He was very good about pressure, keeping it consistent and asking about harder/softer. I swear sometimes it felt like he had 6 or 7 hands all at once working on my back. I have never felt so utterly tended to in my life. I was both conscious *and dreaming at the same time* at points, while Carlos worked my body over. We only sprang for 70-minute massages--by the way, if you're going for a couple's massage, their "Series of 2" price applies, so we paid $170 instead of $180. I wish we had sprung for twice that long. I would honestly go back 3 times a week if I didn't have that pesky rent to pay. I cannot recommend this highly enough. I left feeling drunk and happy, with a big sleepy dopey smile on my face. Maybe that happens after any massage--though I never felt it during the 20-min PT massages I've had in the past. Either way, I *will* be going back (finances pending). The only thing that was really odd was their almost total lack of aftercare instructions. Since I work in healthcare I had looked into some beforehand, including to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and flush all the released toxins and lactic acid out of the system, but if I hadn't known that going in, I wouldn't have known it going out. I was in pain....my shoulders, neck and upper back hurt, so I treated myself to a therapeutic massage. I wasn't really sure where to turn, so of course I consulted Yelp, and this is how I stumbled upon Opal. I've had several massages at various spas around NYC, but Opal is by far my absolute favorite. At other spas the overall feeling seems like forced tranquility, at Opal, nothing is forced. The practitioners are genuine and calming and the space itself is quite ethereal. It is a somewhat tiny space (not confining or claustrophobic) with two massage rooms. You call, leave a message (no receptionist), they call you back and you make your appointment. You arrive no sooner than 10 minutes before your appointed time, to a sign on the door that states they're with clients. Once inside, you can't hear any outside noise. It is quite a serene place. I got the 70 minute session for $90--which in my opinion was a steal. Shakti, my practitioner, is trained in Thai Yoga Massage and she was a genius with her healing touch. I didn't receive a Thai Yoga Massage, but one that was custom made for my particular muscle needs. Afterward, all the tension and knots were gone. It seemed everything was in its right place and I felt more balanced. When I was done I felt euphoric. I felt at peace and left in a much better mood. This is the *only* place in NYC that I will go to for massage therapy. 1) They are not a bougie spa intent on just relaxing you - they cater the massage to what is really ailing you, 2) They do BODY work and work out bubbles and blights and everything out of sight, 3) I once had a crick in my neck for 5 days, literally could not turn left. In my former life I was a licensed massage therapist so trust me when I say the folks at Opal know what they're dping & they do it very well! I tend to not like fancy shmancy spas casue they tend to be lots of fluff for your bucks - and they usally snatch alot of them - & so Opal is great relief from that. They'e a tiny, beautifully decorated (NY'ers never cease to amaze me with how much we can do in bat sized caves) space filled with house made oils & concoctions. The music is smoothing, the massage room itself is tiny but again, cozy & the therapist really work. You can feel their focused attention in every stroke. I also LOVE that you get all these extra goodies - aromatherapy, energy work, hot stoes, etc - at NO extra charge. Good stuff. I had the worst afternoon - stuck late at work and then the train was delayed so I ended up 30 minutes late for my appointment. It was either cancel my appointment and pay a $45 fee or go on with it and have a much shortened massage. I couldn't afford the fee and really needed that massage so I stayed. Jackie was so nice and put me in the room right away and told me I could fill out the paperwork later so I wouldn't lose anymore time. She did a great job stretching my legs after she worked on my feet since I said I had just been snowboarding. Turns out I love deep tissue massage - the way she worked so hard on my back was amazingly painful and awesome. At the end she massaged my face and scalp and I left feeling a million times better. Plus she worked on me for almost an hour which was 15 minutes past when she should have stopped. I am definitely going back for the full 90 minutes next time! Simply stated: best massages by the most competent therapists I have ever had the pleasure to have work on me. I had a lovely gift certificate to D'Mai Urban Spa across the street that I used and enjoyed but at almost double the price I can't find a reason why I would go back when Opal is $90 for 70 minutes of serious, competent & thoughtful massage therapy. If the bells and whistles of a traditional chichi spa experience is what you are looking for Opal may not be for you: the space is small, there aren't excessive amenities or services. But, if you want the best massage of your life you will be more than satisfied at Opal. I recently had a pre-natal massage with Shakti. I cannot recommend her highly enough without slathering praise upon her in an embarassing & hyperbolic manner. I haven't been here in a while because I moved, so when I had a day off I made an appointment and was super excited! My massage therapist, Tina, was amazing. She asked me what kind of pain I was having and she spent some time taking about the different massages that were available. A few weeks ago I partially dislocated my shoulder, and all the muscles in my back/shoulders/neck were so tight I felt like a Marine. I was actually really afraid that a massage would do more harm than good, but the muscle pain was getting in the way of basic functions, so I finally decided to do MASSES of research, find a really good masseuse, and take the plunge. Oh man. She sat me down, discussed my shoulder, talked about how we could make it feel better without hurting it in any way, and then went to work. By the time I walked out, I swear, I had a full range of motion back, no pain left, and was wearing a big, goofy grin on my face. Ummmmm AMAZING. I'm training for my 2nd marathon right now so my legs have been tight and sore for awhile now, so I decided to get a massage at Opal to ease some of the tension and work out some of the knots. Carlos was like a dream - thorough, perfect amount of pressure, and he even did stretching and range of motion stuff. Also, it has to be said - he is hot as HELL. For the first few minutes I was like "oh my god he's touching me he's touching me he's touching me" and I was all nervous and giggly, but that quickly subsided because he is just that good. My legs got WORKED, which is exactly what I asked for, and he was both smooth and creative with how he massaged certain muscles. I was so impressed. The place is unpretentious while being still completely relaxing and has a spa feel without the bullshit cucumber water and snobby receptionist. The oils, aromatherapy stuff, stretching, heat pads, etc are all included - they don't try to sneak in any upcharges and their prices are fairly reasonable (90 bones for a 70 minute massage). I freakin love this place. I agree w/ some of the other reviewers, I almost didn't want to rave about it because I want it all to myself, but this place seriously has to stay around forever, it's too amazing. read more

I went back here again recently and it was still great. It has encouraged me to get on a somewhat regular schedule with them (as time/money/hubris allows). I'll probably go back to Shakti, who I had the first time I came. I feel she took more care in discussing my reasons for coming, concerns she could help me with, down to music choices. The person I had this time was still very skilled but not as careful and empathic. They're open long hours and the scheduling / reception system ensures that the whole place is quiet and serene as soon as you walk in the door. It is the best. read more

Just had a fantastic prenatal massage with Ira. She took the time to listen to me and targeted all the areas I really wanted with precision. She was strong and gave me plenty of pressure where I wanted it. I also feel like massages are so often cut a little short or that the mini consult/settling-in beforehand cuts into your time - and when stuff like this is a real luxury for you, every minute counts. I definitely feel like at Opal, I got a full hour (and maybe even a little more) of actual, wonderful hands-on-my-body time. The hot stones were a miracle on my achey muscles and I left feeling like I had blood flowing in brand new areas in my back. Have been going to Opal since 2010, I don't think I can ever leave Brooklyn I'm too in love with this place. On principle I refuse to get massages elsewhere in New York City! Erica is my favorite, I swear she can read my mind/body. She always asks if you have any areas that you need work on, or if you need water, if the room is a good temperature, if you would like more work done in the area that you have pain in, etc. She is amazing - go see Erica! The facilities are always clean and smell so lovely. I highly recommend Opal - great business, great massage therapists (I've had a few over the years, Sheri (the owner I believe) and Sarah are also fantastic), and the pricing is pretty great too. read more

This is my first 5-star rating. This place is special. I first visited about a year and a half ago, and had the best massage of my life. I ended up becoming a "regular," visiting several times a month over the next year. The only reason I stopped is that I moved to California. I worked with Janet, who is very friendly and professional, and a genuinely warm and wonderful person. She communicates very well, and would ask questions to see how I was feeling and if there was anything I specifically wanted to work on that day. She always started the session by offering me a glass of water, and would incorporate hot rocks, aromatherapy and warm pillows (none of which costs extra), in addition to different massage techniques. A massage at Opal is a real treat, and for some surprising reason, also the most affordable place in the neighborhood. I won't say I've been able to get massages regularly, but I will say that I have experienced enough massage to know (and feel) the difference between good and bad massage and what constitutes an AMAZING massage. Opal is easily the best massage in NYC. A truly personalized experience. $115 plus tip gets you an AMAZING 90 minute massage in a private room. Overhead costs are kept low so you don't have to pay for an unnecessary receptionist. They WILL call you back. They have their own blends of essential oils for aromatherapy. This is an affordable massage place in the Park Slope area. My wife got me a gift certificate for my birthday -- it's good for a year -- and I really enjoyed my 70 minute massage. Located in a small garden space in the North Slope, I couldn't have asked for a better massage. I wish they had a sauna to help losen up the mussels, but my massage therapist used lots of heat -- hot towels, hot stones -- to help losen up my back and legs. It's no frills, but if you're just looking for a nice massage at a reasonable price, this place is great. I'll def. come back the next time I want/need a massage. read more
