We never felt rushed to make a decision, and we learned so much about the puppies we were interested in. They also have an educational rec room with therapy bunnies. They're also really helpful if you're having trouble after you bring your friend home. I reached out to Oregon Humane Society because I was trying to do what I felt was best for my cat. She was seen by one of their vets last year and was diagnosed with minor arthritis and some soft tissue pain. We were given simple pain medication, and while she still had some soreness, she was otherwise doing okay. I have younger cats in the home who constantly bother her, and after a lot of difficult thought, I decided she might be happier and less stressed as the only cat in a quieter household. Making the decision to consider rehoming a pet you love is heartbreaking, but I was trying to prioritize her quality of life. I filled out all of the paperwork hoping for guidance or support. Instead, I was told they recommended euthanasia based on her medical record, the same record from a visit where I was told her issues were minor and manageable. My cat is only six years old. I understand shelters and rescues have difficult decisions to make and limited resources, but receiving that recommendation without discussion of other options was shocking and devastating. I reached out hoping for help finding my cat a peaceful, loving environment, and I left feeling unheard and discouraged. I don't trust this rescue with animals if they euthanize over minor issues. read more

Everyone who works here is exactly the kind of person you imagine/want to work at the humane society. They were all friendly and knowledgeable, and do an excellent job of managing expectations for adjusting a pet to a new environment. We had come in with the recognition that we might not find our cat on the first trip but the first cat we met with is now our cat lol. Was hoping my future cat might be in the $25 range but he was $100, no regrets worth every penny. Especially because I know it helps continue to fund the society's good work. They also have a great little store there so if there's any last touches you need before bringing them home it's super convenient. I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review--I have so many wonderful things to say about this place! The staff are always incredibly friendly, helpful, and empathetic. The doctors are top-notch across the board. I especially love Dr. Golden, but every vet I've seen here has been wonderful. Appointments are well organized--I've never had to wait long for a scheduled visit, and the care has always been excellent. When my cat passed, they even helped me access funds to cover her final bills, which was such a blessing during a very difficult time. I first came here after a bad experience with another vet who tried to overcharge me when my cat was sick and I was unemployed. A friend recommended the Humane Society because they're affordable and truly supportive of people facing financial hardships. Pros:OHS does important work. Nice facility. Friendly people. Cons: Every department (including the Community Veterinary Hospital) has one central number). The shortage amount of time I have waited on line for someone to pick up is 15 mins. I adopted two elder dogs with multiple medical issues. I took one to their "Hospital" for a check up one week after he was adopted. He developed severe diarrhea after that appointment. I waited on-the phone for 30 mins. Because how difficult it was to get through to them, I decided to take him to a Vet in my neighborhood. They sent the other dog home with kennel cough, I will advise people who are considering adopting from them to understand how they operate. read more

I had to drive to Columbia blvd clinic. Walked in 4 people sitting behind long counter. I was only customer. I asked about ear mites for my cat. The 2 women by me didn't know what ear mites were. They said fleas or ear infection. Then a 3rd woman said they were to busy to take new customers. I was the only customer there. Won't ever be back I'm 70 seems like lack of respect for seniors poor customer service and attitude. read more

The Oregon Humane Society is a wonderful organization. They are a no-kill shelter so If you have to make the painful and difficult decision to relinquish a pet, you can be comforted in knowing your pet can stay there until they find their forever home. And if you are seeking a cat or dog, please adopt! There are so many pets who need love and are in need of a good home. I truly believe that adopted pets are grateful and make the best companions. The facilities here are beautiful, spacious and clean. The cat area is large and has many diverse rooms to accommodate the different personalities. The kittens are kept in rooms together with lots of areas to play and nap. Cats that like and tolerate other cats are housed together in rooms, each designed with a theme often from generous donators. There are a variety of places for cats to nap since they all have different preferences. There are perches, caves, comfy beds and multiple litter boxes. Each room is kept clean. For those cats wanting privacy or not used to all the activity, they have their own crates and space. When you are deciding on which cat, they have private rooms where you can play and engage with them and get to see their personalities. I adopted an orange bengal kitty here, she was on the ledge peering out the door oblivious to all the other kittens in the room, more interested in the humans. She was a crazy, quirky cat who had me laughing all the time! She is no longer here, but I am grateful for the time together. The process to adopt is easy and efficient - just be prepared with your vet's info and history of your other pets- and once reviewed and approved, you leave that day with your new companion. Unfortunately I had to give one adopted cat back because he could not adjust to living with another cat and was attacking her. They have a separate process for "intake" which enables you to fill out paperwork and drop the pet off at a different entrance on the side of the building so it's private. There is a fee and this helps them in evaluating and caring for the pet until a home is found. I've never adopted a dog but have visited them many times. There aren't as many because with Portland being a dog city, they get adopted quickly. A friend of mine has volunteered here for years, walking the dogs, giving them play time and cleaning their rooms. They really do a wonderful job taking care of these animals during their time here. To the right of the reception area is a store where you can buy pet cages, leashes, toys, food, sweaters and more. Their prices are very reasonable and they have great items. Make sure to check it out while you are there. Part of the profits go towards caring for the animals. Plenty of parking out front. Very reasonable fees. The Oregon Humane Society is where I go when adopting a pet and they are my charity of choice for my Amazon purchases and donations. I was pleasantly surprised by how cleanly maintained and organized the shelter was structured. The staff was friendly but had limited information or details on the dogs' history. The kennels were relatively clean, big, and comfortable for the dogs. Yes, some kennels had accidents, but there were more dogs than volunteers. The rooms where the kennels were contained were bright and easy to navigate. Surprisingly, the rooms only had a slight odor, not what I expected. But be prepared if you want to do a meet and greet with a dog. The application includes asking if you can take the dog home within 24hrs. I felt pressured. If I recall, it is 45 minutes with the dog. The volunteers who bring the dogs need more details of their history, especially behaviorally. The only history on my dog was "a couple gave her up because they had a baby." I did adopt a sweet dog who loves humans, but not so with other dogs. She tends to be aggressive with other dogs when taking her out on walks. She is in training to remove the bad behavior. Hopefully, the issue can be resolved. They do offer post-adoption discounts on supplies, pet insurance, and training. read more

I recently took my 9 year old cocker spaniel in for chronic ear issues . Upon arriving 30 minutes early and literally the only car in the parking lot as far as patiences the appointment still did not start at scheduled time. I was then giving the basic cost estimate for the visit..and then, was told there were other options which I was talked into doing multiple tests total out the door $540 , they failed to include an item that I was told would be included with the cost of visit, as well as my dog has had the same vet for over a year , with multiple chart notes stating his heart was in good condition with no issues. I take my dog to Oregon community hospital sedated for everyone's safety and my dog is literally snoring and very groggy when Dr came in to examine him. He was definably NOT behaving as normal with sedation. My dog has just had a visit with his vet 2 weeks ago and all chart notes say heart was in good health. This is the very first time my dog has been seen from this provider and she all the sudden comes back and says he has a heart murmur and starts talking about quality of life ? At no point or time has ANY vet in the 9 years I've had this dog EVER mentioned a heart murmur or quality of life conversation. So I left after appointment, scared, sad, feeling defeated,hopeless,guilty, and unsure of my dog's health and paid about $250 more than I anticipated. I called the manager Eleanor and she really wasn't even on the same page as me talking about a procedure my dog didn't even have done and siding with DR that had only seen my dog 1 time not even second guessing that the Dr could have been incorrect. And dismissed me. I asked what was going to be done about this, her attitude got snotty and she said well what do you want me to do about it? I asked for HER supervisors info since she wasn't going to help me . I left the hospital crying my eyes out feeling like a horrible dog mom and the fear of uncertainty and less money in my pocket than I could really afford to give them due to the upsale of charges they kept adding on and talking me into doing. I would not recommend this facility. I paid $540 for appt and all they really did was clean his ears out and take blood to be sent to lab. The only good thing I can say is the vet tech was very nice but the Dr ..not so much or the manger Elenore . read more

Rating in regards to OHS end of life experience (not adoption services)-- Can't seem to get over my experience in dropping off my deceased cat for cremation services today. A cat originally adopted from OHS. A really hollow, cold experience. I wasn't expecting a lot, but was hoping for a better experience than feeling like I was returning something at Target. The hospital side of OHS was closed so we went to the main entrance desk to find out where intake was for my pet. "Did youuu... make an appointment?" In an annoyed tone from the man, the elongated "youuu" as though I was an absolute idiot that shouldn't even be speaking to him. I said I hadn't, I was told I wouldn't need one over the phone. "Wellllll we don't do cremation here" still in a rude tone. I just stared at him, looking for some sort of direction. "You'll have to try the building next door, call the number on their window." That was that. Rude tone the entire time, despite knowing I had a dead pet in the box I was holding. Went to the building and was let inside without having to call. The woman in there was nice enough, but it was just a transaction. She didn't ask if I had an appointment, because you literally don't need one, rude man at front desk. After the paperwork was signed, she said we could take a moment for goodbyes. There just wasn't any other space to go to inside the silent room, so it was right next to where she was sitting at the desk. An awkward end. The pricing for cremation is cheaper here, but I wouldn't do it again. Hoping I can help someone dealing with an already devastating loss to avoid completely rude employees here or avoid the depressing transaction experience. read more

I spent $50 for a dental consult and waited over a months for an appt. I arranged to take off work and I left on time but was held up by a long train along Columbia Blvd. Consequently I arrived just 10 minutes late. They told me they did not have time and I would have to reschedule.l because I was late. Keep in mind they were just going to look at this teeth. I think it's despicable that the vet has such an ego that he can't give me 5 minutes. It was out of my control, show some grace, people are doing the best they can. read more

We fostered Mittens for about a week. We are under the impression that she was rescued from a possibly somewhat abandoned property, with quite a few dogs, many if not all of which had the mange (a term of course that seemed much more common decades ago). Not totally sure of the exact history, but at first she was very melancholic and timid and she craved human contact so I wouldn't be surprised if the above is true (often she would whimper if we left her alone while we went to another room). She has no hair on the bottom half of her body so you could see her tiny little butt, but because of a (I assume) mange-related hair cut she had a big stringy mullet. She also didn't smell great, despite numerous baths. A friend described her as being so ugly she was cute, which I tend to agree with. Mittens got very attached to us quick, especially to my 12 year old daughter, who loves Mittens very much. Mittens is around three years old but didn't answer to any words, even basic ones, even her own name, at least at first. She hated going on walks and it appeared as if she didn't know what to do, often spinning in circles during these times. By the end of the week however she started responding to her name and the word "treat." She also got better at "the walks." My girlfriend took her in for her check up after us only having her about a week and they said she already had someone wanting to adopt her(!), so Mittens ending up staying at the humane society in which case I didn't really get to say goodbye the way I wanted. I'm so excited however that she will have a permanent home, but of course I will miss her, especially considering we will never see her again. Regardless, we love you very much Mittens! We are thinking of you and hoping things in the future are better than ever! PS. Mittens, like her name is very catlike with her movements and noises... read more

This place is like the Taj Mahal of shelters. I've honestly never seen such a large, clean and beautiful facility in any city for dogs and cats, nor have I ever seen any as well-organized and run. My daughter lives near this complex (and I say "complex" and not "building", as it is huge, and divided into various "pods", each one devoted to a different aspect of animal care, rehabilitation/treatment and adoption). She volunteers here, and she also got her "forever" dog, Pretzel, here. So when I recently visited her for Thanksgiving, she brought me here to give me a little tour. And wow, I was so impressed. First and foremost, there are the dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, up for adoption, in roomy crates, with beds and blankets and some with toys, all with their names and signs about any conditions they might have and any needed precautions that need to be taken around them. (I should add that the volunteers here are incredibly well-vetted and trained - more so than any other shelter I'm aware of. Heck, more so than most jobs in general). The cats and kittens are in themed areas (one is an Egyptian King Tut-like area, complete with a huge throne. Too funny!). There are special rooms where people meet the pet they want to adopt. There are special areas in pods not open to the public. They have dedicated veterinary services on site, associated with the Portland vet students who intern and train here. And the vets are available to the public, for their pets, and they offer a sliding scale for pricing, too. My kid plans on bringing Pretzel here for vet services. (And the vet area is humongous). There are areas devoted to training the vet students, and advanced education. There is a gift store with lots of dog and cat toys and clothes and treats; all proceeds go to the facility (my kid gets her dog a lot of $1 bandanas here. They are so cute!). There is a rose garden out back. There is a pet cemetery too, for the public to respectfully bury their deceased fur babies. They offer a gazillion programs for the public (see their website), from summer camp programs and after-school clubs, to pet training programs and more. All the volunteers I met here were lovely and clearly devoted to their work. Did I mention that this place is immaculate? I've never seen any animal-focused place so clean you could practically eat off the floor. Spotless. What an amazing, amazing facility. They do such wonderful work here, all for the animals. I'd seriously recommend everyone to check out this place if they are in the market for adopting a forever fur-friend. read more

This place is not recommended if you see an animal you want to adopt online. They are impossible to adopt from if you are not living in the same town. We found a dog that was a perfect fit for our home. We knew we wanted to adopt and had the money ready. We even had all the stuff we would need to care for it. It was at the Portland campus. We live an hour and a half away and called them to say we are on the way, have the money, are willing to skip the meet n greet, we have adopted from them before and we already filled out the questionnaire. We told them how long it would take to get there. They keep no waiting list refuse to schedule adoption times would not allow us to go to the local location to pay and fill out paperwork then drive to pick up the dog. They said no one is in line and the dog is available. We drove over an hour away after speaking to them on the phone. Once we get there they say someone is visiting the dog as well as another dog. And they got priority since they walked in in person. This is so unfair to people who live any distance from the shelter. They want to adopt dogs but refuse to help anyone who lives any distance away no matter the circumstances. I understand not holding a dog for days but why not for an hour and a half which is drive time. The other people adopted the dog and our kids as well as us are heartbroken. They said we could look at the other dogs but already did and read the bios. The other dogs were not a good fit for our home. read more

We prefer to adopt a dog, as we have done in the past....when the process was MUCH easier and MUCH more humane. Many organizations have gone the way of conveyor belt adoption. Found an OHS dog I was interested in and discovered that the process is as follows: Fill out an application which includes the question: "Are you able to take your new pet home within 24 hours of submitting your questionnaire?" Seems alarming that you are given such a small window to meet, claim, and re-home your new dog. Even more troublesome, is that the website provides little information about the potential pet such as overall health, if they have had a physical by a veterinarian, where the pet was found or if it was a surrender. No behavioral, special needs, or compatibility information, etc. Also, I so no policy about returns and refunds should the pet have issues that were not provided before the adoption. There are also a lot of advertising links to pet food stores, training programs, etc...at a cost, of course. The pet I am interested in has an adoption fee of $500. I expect a little more information. Over the years I have seen a trend in adoption agencies: little focus on re-homing the pet to a loving environment and more focus on quick turnaround and profit. I would not consider adopting a pet "on the spot" without a lengthier meet and greet (with 24 hours to think about it) and/or a 24-48hr in-home visit so that the dog can meet other family members and pets. This insures a successful rehoming without the possibility of returned pets, or worse yet, abandoned pets. The end result is that people like me, who can provide a loving, safe, protective environment, are discouraged by the impersonal process. I realize that these pets sometimes come from stressful situations and I am willing to give them all the love and medical attention they need, but it is imperative that adoptive families receive full transparency, respectful communication (as opposed to directives), and courtesy. Adopting should be a humane experience for all involved. read more

I hate to say anything negative about such an important non-profit, but this is more for coaching purposes so they can improve. First, by hiring and training staff to be scrupulously honest in intake assessments. When you lie, it hurts the animal and the adopter. Don't say that a highly active, roughhousing 7 yr old Boston Terrier is a an old lady "couch potato" when the person who surrendered her to you clearly said no such thing. The girl in Admissions who took Coco back act told me that the guy who wrote in description was winging it. Because of this unscrupulous a**h*** intake guy, I'm out 300.00 nonrefundable adoption fee and Coco and I are brokenhearted today. The fact that they wouldn't refund the 300.00 after admitting they'd given false information is unconscionable and probably illegal. Coco will get adopted soon, I hope, but it'll be a long time before I work up the courage to adopt again. And it won't be from here. P.S. She needs to be tested for Cushing's disease. read more

We used to always go to the OHS when we wanted to adopt a cat. It was a fun experience looking at all the cats, finding one that interested us then having a "one-on-one" with each cat to decide if it's the right one. However, all that's changed. Now you have to make an appointment to see a cat. That's no big deal, EXCEPT you have to choose a cat on their website, sight unseen, then you'll be sent a text/email when you can come in to see the animal and you only have TWO HOURS to reply to the text or email and must come in the same day! What about people who work for a living? They're supposed to leave their job to rush over to the OHS to MAYBE adopt a pet?Then if you realize the pet isn't a good fit you have to do the rigmarole all over again. Thank, but no thanks. We'll go somewhere else to adopt a pet. On another subject, I'm disabled, love animals, and thought volunteering at the OHS would be a good way to help and spend some time interacting with various pets. However, just wanting to help isn't enough. They require a police background check, paid by the prospective volunteer, before they'll even consider you. I don't have as much as a misdemeanor on my record, but the intrusiveness of the requirement for a VOLUNTEER turned me off, so they'll never get a kind, helpful person as myself to help them out! read more

Oregon Humane Society is actually the Oregon Inhumane Society. Both to humans and animals. They are hiding half the kittens from the public, the process takes 3 times longer than buying a new car. So many unnecessary things they are doing there to prevent people from adopting by making the process so difficult, time consuming, and now since June 1, can no longer make appointment to see a pup. You have to go in person to even have a chance to adopt a popular cute pup, small dogs go first, exotic kittens there was a line out the door before they open. So many people have to waste hours of driving back and forth wasting money in gas, time, extra fumes and pollution for the State Of Oregon that is supposedly trying to save the planet by NOT doing such things. Poorly managed, at least in Portland. Haven't been to any other Humane Society but their website seem to make it a more friendly and approachable experience. Rescuing an animal desperately in need of a home, should not be this hard, and much worse than buying a car, 100%. Meet and greet if you bring your own dog, should be in and out. But the sit on the floor, dink around for so long, don't let you touch or talk to a dog, or one weirdo took a 8 wk old kitten out of surgery 12 hours, out of a box for me to see, and plops the poor thing right on the cold hard floor. I asked for them to put the kitten into my lap, they refused, said I was being rude to them, and I had to get up and leave the room, they also had bad bo, I couldn't stay any longer with the smell and horrible attitude, animal abuse, and then they put on me. Never going back there again, I keep telling myself. They need to get new management for sure, and straighten back out, they used to be good, decades ago. read more

They assured us he was over it. It's been 8 days and 2 vet visits and a hospital stay later we know he had pneumonia. I'm talking thousands of dollars in week one. My husband and I adopted a kitten through another rescue who we have been having some difficulty training. The kitten is also being quite the nuisance to our elderly resident cat, despite their almost equal energy levels. I was wary to pay for any sort of behavioral training, but OHS has it advertised so well on their site and the price is affordable, so I took the leap as I was desperate. We did a zoom call with Jennifer Shirley and I couldn't of been more pleased. She was immensely attentive, very thorough and I truly felt like she listened to me. Even 45 minutes into the phone call, she was able to touch on things I mentioned 5 minutes in. She came up with amazing ideas for helping out kitten divert his attention elsewhere and helping our resident kitty feel less annoyed. I also liked that Jennifer was aware that our resident cat was adopted through OHS years ago, I don't think I mentioned that in the intake paperwork- so they must have done some sort of search. Regardless, very cool. I feel like my session was 100% worth the money. Her reassurance alone was worth the money. She made me feel so much better about my situation. A year ago we adopted our beloved cat. We had talked about adding to our family for a while and I had been surfing the website looking for our new family member. The adoption process wasn't difficult and when we met we feel in love. Tubby has made our family more happy and he's such a sweet boy. In the future we will always go with the humane society. My home felt empty after the passing of my Mario. My home needed feline energy. It was late October, 2013. I fetched my pal Oscar B. and my cat carrier and together we headed to the Oregon Humane Society. I could just feel it; I was going to find my new fur baby. The Oregon Humane Society is a beautiful building. The kitties are housed in roomy and bright rooms as well as some individually in large cages. I was searching for someone very different from my Mario. I was looking for a little girl kitty and for some reason I was enamored by the thought of having an all black kitty as I had never had a kitty like that before. I also wanted her to be friendly and a "talker." There were so many beautiful kitties. I did see four lovely black kitties and I met them all. One was a little terror that was just too kittenish. The next little one was extremely skittish and shy. When I met little Mousavie, she jumped right up on my lap and meowed at me. I knew she was the one. Thanks to the volunteer assisting me with bringing the kitties into the "get acquainted" room for me, it was really that easy. I wish I could say the paperwork aspect of the adoption process was as seamless. It took almost an hour just to be called into the room to do the adoption paperwork. Still, I would do it all again. Included in the adoption paperwork is a certificate free follow-up vet visit at the vet that you choose, initial vaccinations, and a microchip. After I brought her home, my little girl hid under my bed for about 4 hours before she poked her head out and decided she would make herself at home. Our old friend Palmer the cat had just died of liver failure a few weeks earlier. So, we took a look at the Oregon Humane Society website, to see if we could find another cat to join our home. We already have 2 other cats, Ziggy and COAL. Go online to www.oregonhumane.org/ and you can see all kinds of cats, dogs, rabbits and beyond! All ages, all sizes and breeds. We settled on 3 or 4 cats that looked interesting and went down to the shelter. It's the most beautiful animal shelter I've ever seen. The cats were in small cheerful rooms and some were in cages sleeping. There were several very nice shelter volunteers there to help us. You can tell that these volunteers are into it. Finally, after looking at several cats, we decided we'd like to meet "Soon Hee." She was a beautiful 4 year old cat who had been at the shelter for about 4 months. Her previous owners had given her up to the shelter because, "they had too many pets already." Soon the very nice people at the shelter had Soon Hee in their arms and we took her to one of the little rooms to meet her. She was beautiful and shy. It didn't take long before we were hooked. We asked if we could adopt Soon Hee. We completed our application, paid an $85 fee. Some cats have a much lower fee. We had a brief meeting with the shelter people and they told us about Soon Hee's history, her medical history including which shots she has had. They gave us a certificate good for her first vet check-up. That was it! Take a look at our photos, you'll see Soon Hee is an excellent pet. You should consider adopting a pet from the Oregon Humane Shelter. They have hundreds of beautiful cats, dogs and rabbbits of all kinds. So apparently they don't do low cost spay & neuter services so that's just wonderful from the only place in the whole state that did it. This state clearly doesn't care about animals since they close down every opportunity for anyone that isn't completely rich to get any assistance. Then when you try to contact any other business that provides spay or neuter services, it becomes a car dealership lmao $400 for this $200 for that like these are animals? I'm SURE it doesn't cost anyone upwards of a thousand dollars to fix a cat. So again thank you for closing your services, imagine being a humane society and not offering this, again thank you Oregon for being so terrible. read more

We had a wonderful experience here at OHS. We even adopted our first dog here a month ago. We were 3rd on the gold list and managed to take our dog home because the other two families did not want him. I'm glad they didn't because he is such an amazing dog. We are so lucky and thankful he came into our lives. The adoption process was great, all we did was sign a few papers and pay and they sent us home with a bunch of coupons online. Shout out to Sarah for being super awesome and giving us her treats so our dog could have a safe ride home with us! You rock! read more
