I heard great things about Oriental Pearl from the SJFS FB and all I can say is boy what a disappointment. We started with appetizers of eggs rolls and crab rangoon, both which were terrible. I mean if this was my local chinese takeout spot, I'd be traveling elsewhere. The entrees did bring my opinion up, they were very good. I got the General Tsos and my husband got the Sesame Chicken. Food came out fast and the service (if you could call it that?) was fine. It should've been a clue when we walked in on a Saturday and it was completely empty. After leaving, I said I wish we could go back in time an hour so we could pick somewhere else to eat. A true Haddonfield institution. They were here in the 90's when I first moved to Haddonfield, making them one of the oldest restaurants in town. It's tucked away at the end of the business strip of Kings Highway and is one of those places that flies under the radar, and they will likely be here until the end of civilization as we know it. I've been here plenty of times over the years; just ordered take out here last night. Drove to the restaurant around 6:30 to pick it up. They have a spacious dining room but only a few tables were filled, though the waiting area was packed with people like me picking up orders, and the phone continued to ring off the hook. The menu is enormous with many Thai, Vietnamese and other Asian specialties. My girlfriend and I ordered the steamed pork dumplings, a pint of the lo mein House Special, Thai cashew chicken, and the grilled chicken with lemon grass. My boyfriend and I went to visit the restaurant two days ago and decided to do a review. as soon as we walked in, we were immediately greeted by the owner and another associate. The owner brought us to a quiet section and was very quick with grabbing us some waters to start off with. The server came over with some hot tea and asked us if we had any questions about the menu. The seats were comfortable and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. You can tell that the owner enjoys seeing the community in his restaurant as he made his rounds around the place. We did put a order in for steam dumplings and pleasantly surprised by not only the price but the taste of them. We also ordered the fried wings and they were hot and perfectly seasoned for dinner. We ordered the triple combination that came with fried rice and it was a perfect size to split between two adults, featured a beef shrimp and a chicken dish. One of the better Chinese restaurants along/near Haddon Ave. The owners and staff are super friendly. The atmosphere is clean and pleasant with plenty of different seating options including booths, standard table/chair seating, and larger tables for big parties. The food is consistent and non-greasy especially when compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area. Their Chicken fried rice is a favorite as is the Special General Tso's Chicken w/ Steamed chicken, Sauteed with tangy glistening brown sauce, and mild spice, listed under the Chef Specials section on the Menu. The fried dumplings, spring-rolls and Eggplant with Garlic Sauce are all good options as well. The nice thing here at Oriental Pearl is that there are plenty of options on the menu and if you want to add Japanese, Thai, or Vietnamese Cuisine they have that here too. Street Parking is available, or in a private lot behind the restaurant. We ordered take out so my family could pick it up on their way over to my house for dinner. Everyone ordered completely different things, so I was curious how everything would taste. My niece wanted the won ton soup but was disappointed that she only got 4 won tons in her order. To be honest, I don't know if she ordered a small or large size. I ordered the seafood delight dish, one of my favorite Chinese restaurant options. This version was a little light on how much seafood was actually in it. A lot of "krab" not crab, if you know what I mean. And at least it didn't have the ubiquitous gelatinous brown sauce that seems prevalent on menus. My brother in law enjoyed his General Tsao chicken. I have been coming to Oriental Pearl for years and it never disappoints. Located just off the main strip of stores on King's Highway, Oriental Pearl is I love that they are BYOB so you can really "settle in" for a pleasant evening with friends. Most of the tables are booths too which makes for a comfortable place to enjoy a meal. The menu here is pretty vast and includes a variety of asian cuisines including "classic" American style Chinese dishes like sweet and sour chicken, Thai dishes, and sushi. This past week my friend and I opted to split edamame and Chinese pizza as our starters. Edamame is very good--although nothing out of the norm. The Chinese pizza smells of soy sauce and nostalgia and is exactly how I remember it as a child. I then had a few sushi rolls. I love the Philadelphia roll here and almost always get that. It tastes very fresh. I also had the spicy tuna roll which was good as well. Prices were very reasonable. My friend is vegetarian and was pleasantly surprised by all of the veggie roll options. She enjoyed the sweet potato and avocado roll. All in all, Oriental Pearl is the perfect "chill" spot that can please a lot of people-- definitely check it out. read more

The "racist" accusation is an unfounded and unfair smear by a one review user named Lily s. The woman in question has always gone out of her way to be friendly to us over the past 15 years. Yelp needs to verify and moderate posts like that - which was probably from a competitor. The Oriental Pearl has terrific american-chinese food. You won't find "authentic" regional Chinese food here like congealed pig blood. If you are a foodier-than-thou type who cannot appreciate "the standards" - chicken with broccoli, hot and sour soup, mu shu pork or even that awful sweet and sour stuff - well prepared then this place is not for you. They have added a sushi bar. With Fuji as competition only 1/4 mile away they have formidable competition. Honestly if we all wanted sushi we'd go to Fuji. If one in your group wants sushi then it's ok. I've had OP's sushi/sashimi in those instances and its decent. Not jaw droppingly great like Fuji but good. They have Thai and Vietnamese on the menu. I'd go elsewhere since these days there are nearby choices that specialize in those cuisines. I was a bit amused by a woman next to us who ordered the Vietnamese vermicelli and was appalled that the sauce (Nc mm pha) was made from fish sauce; she ate it plain. So there is a market for the severely familiar old dishes. (To her credit she tried something new) It is not overpriced for Haddonfield, If you pay attention to the menus of other nearby eateries you will see that it is on the lower end of the price scale. The dining room was remodeled a few years ago. It is clean and pleasant. The sushi side is smaller and cozy. We will continue to eat here frequently. read more

My family and I have been coming to Oriental Pearl for over 15 years. I feel like at this point we are practically considered family. The food has always been very consistent and I honestly never had a bad meal. My only gripe is that the raw/smoked fish based sushi and sashimi has always been a little bit too fishy for me and does not seem to be the freshest. I tend to order rolls with more vegetables and cooked meats/fish. They have really great lunch and dinner combinations where specific meals come with soup, a spring roll, and white/brown/fried rice. I give them a solid 3.5 stars. Good food and quick, friendly service. read more

If you're looking for American style Chinese food in Haddonfield there isnt much to choose from between Oriental Pearl and China King and the latter is quite a huge drop off. They also offer thai and vietnamese food, rubbish, there are plenty of vietnamese and thai specific restaurants to choose from in the area. Japanese restaurants outnumber Chinese ones 3-to-2 in Haddonfield. If you don't mind driving down Kings Highway Sang Kee has more traditional Chinese dishes but if you're looking for beef n broccoli or Orange chicken, OP will suffice, sometimes you just want a heavy dose of thick sauce with msg. I've never sat down but have ordered out quite a number of times. Everthing on the menu is solid but not spectacular. I avoid the faux thai and Vietnamese food. Overall, OP quenches that Chinese food cravings from orange beef to sesame chicken. The prices are a bit high but the quality is well above china king. read more

Went to pick up my order, waited because it wasn't ready....waiting the man said he would check in the back. He answered two phones taking care of the phones BEFORE the people waiting to pick up/pay. Finally he could not find my order and said I MUST have placed it at another location. We compared the numbers from my phone, it was the RIGHT place. Then he said, "who took your order?" I'm very torn over this place. The veggies are the absolute freshest of anywhere. The food options are good and when it's right, it's my favorite. Last time I ordered it, it legitimately tasted wrong. Like the oil they used to fry everything in was off or something, strong chemical flavor, and the general tso's sauce (I usually love their general tso's bean curd) was sweeter than candy. I couldn't eat it. My husband got general tso's chicken and also couldn't eat it. I complained but literally never got a response. I'm too afraid to try them again even though they are the best I've found just because it was a literal waste of $50 and no one would address that. If I'd just gotten a new meal or refund, would have been 5 stars and I'd be a devoted fan ordering at least twice a month. read more

Went here for lunch with my daughters on the spur of the moment. We wanted Asian but not the same places we normally go. So it has been years since I have been here and totally forgot about the place... my bad! The lunch specials are a good deal and include soup or salad / entre / tea and for extra $1 an egg roll or spring roll. The menu includes items that are Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese. I got the Pad Thai with shrimp was good but not sure I would order that again as I am pretty particular about my Thai food and although good was only average. But I will say the Miso soup and spring roll was delicious. Also had the Beef Lo Mein which was excellent as well as the beef fried rice. I do recommend this place and will definitely return. We usually don't like to dine at Asian restaurants that serve multi-cuisine (Chinese/Japanese/Thai, etc.) because more often than not, one of the cuisines usually takes a hit on the sucky-ness scale. (usually the sushi). Well, we make an exception for the Oriental Pearl because they serve good, Chinese-American food. The Chinese food is 'clean' (not greasy), sits well on my stomach, comes in nice size portions and they offer brown rice. We also like a few of the Vietnamese and Thai items........ but I do think they do Chinese the best. We have never had the Sushi and probably won't. They do a booming take-out business as well, keeping the chef/cooks busy (which then sometimes slows down the service in the dining room). Tonight I had the 'Oriental Pearl Lemon Grass chicken/beef/shrimp sautee' with brown rice and veggies, it was very good. Next time I will ask them to make it more spicier. Kate had the Pork w/ pineapple entrée, she enjoyed it. As always, our water glasses are continuously refreshed throughout the meal. The prices are reasonable. I would say that the OP is a consistently solid, 3.5 star spot and we enjoy coming here to eat. read more

I like this place. It's your typical Chinese restaurant, but its very clean and the the wait staff are very friendly and accommodating. So far I've eaten Chinese and sushi here, but I will stick with the Chinese from now on. The sushi wasn't bad but it's not great. Last night I ordered the teryaki chicken, which came out on a sizzling, bubbling skillet with two (count 'em, two!) grilled chicken breasts, onions, carrots and some broccoli for garnish. It also came with rice, soup and salad. It was way more than I can put down so now I have lunch for today. And it was very reasonably priced considering how much I got. My bf got mango chicken (my sweetie likes the sweet stuff) and his was very tasty too. The only thing that was sub par out of my whole meal was the hot and sour soup I got, it was kind of bland, which if you normally eat that you know it's supposed to be anything but bland. My favorite Chinese food joint near my place. The owner is super nice and you can tell the whole staff works hard. This place is BYOB and definitely a nice place to take a date out. Been here twice and some of my favorites are the green beens (will order every time I come here), egg foo young and the Kung pao shrimp. Having been to the location in Cherry Hill we assumed this would be the same menu and since I was craving Vietnamese we stopped here while in Westmont. The menu was mainly Chinese with some Vietnamese (lemongrass items), sushi and some Thai. I ended up ordering spicy salmon rolls, shrimp tempura rolls and steamed dumplings. They were all decent but def not anything memorable. The host and waitress were extremely friendly upon entering and leaving while the place was super old school with creaky floors and looks like it hasn't been updated ever. I personally kinda like this so it's not a slam. Since we are in the area all the time I think we would come back during lunch to try their Chinese which is supposed to be their jam just disappointed that their menu was so off from the Cherry Hill location which has fantastic Vietnamese rolls and vermicelli. read more

My friend suggested the Oriental Pearl because I was craving "a good egg roll". I am so happy she did so. I got a fantastic egg roll, a tuna roll and an avacado roll. The egg roll was fresh and hot, crispy on the outside, but not mushy on the inside. The tuna and avacado were fresh and plentiful. In fact, I it took at least two bites to eat each piece. The staff was friendly and very attentive. Our waters were never empty and we were treated with courtesy and respect from the hello when we entered to a 'have a good night' when we left. Judging by the smell of old oil from the extractor fan in the parking lot I should have turned and run. Ordered Chicken noodle soup:- Grim. Broth out of a box, salty and v yellow. Noodles undercooked. Tiny piece of chicken. Chinese pizza:- under cooked, pale and greasy. Shrimp toast:- over cooked. No shrimp here. Sesame noodles: Strange, under cooked noodles again. Moo shu pork:- A v salty mountenous mess on the plate. Sent it back. Take out of egg, onion fried rice. Beyond grim. Like the noodles, the rice is cooked ahead and allowed to go hard. The grease is taken from the frier. Dreadful and lazy. To survive a meal here you need a stomach of cast iron. read more

This was our second stop on the hunt for the "most acceptable" Chinese in the Haddonfield area. Much better than the first. I do have one caveat, this is not a Chinese take out joint. Its an Asian restaurant that offers takeout along with its large dining room service. When we got there it was very busy with both a seated and take out service. That said: The Vietnamese spring rolls were super, crisp and ungreasy, would have been good to have some Vietnamese dipping sauce. The hot and sour soup was good, hot, not sour, lots of egg ribbons, little pork shreds or moer. Pork lo men was good, a nice balance of noodles and sauce with a coated pork slice. General Tso was also good with chunk chicken pieces in a lightish sauce and a nice mix of broccoli . I'd prefer a bit crunchier batter but this wasn't bad. As we had an extra diner in this test, we ordered the Chicken with broccoli in a garlic sauce. Not bad. We walked in on a restaurant managers disaster night, lots of unanticipated patrons. They seemed to be a bit flustered but handled it professionally. Overall I had a good impression of the place and look forward to a second round of sampling. read more

Mind you, my expectations were already a bit low and somehow this place manages to still disappoint. In terms of delivery, it was swift and easy, which we appreciated. Admittedly we ordered a lot of items: - Veggie Lo Mein - Veggie Moo Shoo - Sesame Chicken - Fried Rice - Cold Noodles - Spicy Tuna Sushi - Tuna Shashimi All the portions were enormous and I was a bit thrown off my the cheap prices (versus NYC). My biggest qualm was that when we went to pick up the items, we were informed that there was "no space on the stove top to cook the tuna". We were a bit confused as to why "cooking" and "sashimi" would be in the same sentence but we decided to let it fly. It was just frustrating to find this out when we got to the restaurant as this was someone's meal. After calling back home and putting in a new order, we were all set.
