18 layer, do it. Getting a cold cut sub like this is hard to find. First off, the place is like walking into an old style deli. Very cool charm and authenticity. I've been visiting Gonella's since I was a little kid; and it is by far my most favorite version of an Italian sandwich. The soft roll is the way to go! Best part is they're delivered fresh from right down the street, so you're always guaranteed to have a fresh, soft, roll. I love how you can select how many layers you'd like on your sandwich. While most places who serve this style of sandwich do this, Gonella's was my first encounter and they do it best. My go-to is a 12 layer on soft roll with extra dressing on the side. I seriously wish they could bottle and sell this dressing. It's the best mix of oil and red wine vinegar. I SOAK the entire sandwich in it, it's that good. Their canolli's are amazing as well as the various other deli sides they offer (potato salad, pasta salad, etc). With good prices and consistent lines, it's worth the wait. read more

Upon coming into the establishment, the two women behind the counter were friendly answering all of my questions. No hard rolls, they say they sell out fast. I was considering a turkey sub and an Italian. But, the sliced turkey looked a little grey so I passed. We ordered a 12&2 and 8&2. The meat is already in paper and they just slap it on the sub with lettuce and tomato and sub sauce. I'm not sure I like how the meat is already bundled together. Yea I'm sure it saves time, but I would think the meat flavors blend together as it sits, which is not a good thing. The 12 layer seems a bit too much. Even the 8 layer is too much--I only ate half. Holy Moly, is Gonellas good! I went here on the recommendation of a friend, and I'm forever in his debt. Located in a part of town where there aren't a lot of options, Gonellas would be a godsend even if it were just OK. As it is, their Italian sub is heavenly! I don't know if they make their dressing in-house or if they're just buying some good stuff, but that dressing is head and shoulders above what comes on normal subs. OK, now you know the subs taste good. So let me tell you about the extra coolness of Gonellas. You order the sub by the number of layers you want. The smallest is six layers of meat and one layer of provolone, and the largest is 18 layers of meat and three layers of provolone. In between, are 8x2, 12x2, and 14x3. I'm not sure who could possibly finish the 18x3 in one sitting, the 6x1 stuffed me, and I'm a hearty eater. And talk about value for the money! The 6x1 is only $5.50 and the 18x3 is only $9.00. In addition to being extra cool, Gonellas is extra charming, because its actually a small specialty food mart with subs being served from the deli counter. I found some unusual food items while I was waiting in line, and they're going in someone's stocking this Christmas. read more

I have been coming here for 15 plus years, never had a bad submarine sandwich. I got the 10$ sub which basically a meal for two days LOL, it's about 2 inches of meat and veggies and their Italian style sauce between a fresh daily loaf of bread. I am pretty sure it's 14 layers of different meat and 3 types of cheese. They also have two other subs with even more layers of meat and cheese. Now if you are having a party then go for the 3 footer or 6 footer. They also have a olive bar with many types from around the world. One other specialty is the cold salads with about 10 types, grab a pound or two. Can't go wrong here. read more

Bottom line up front: Gonellas is an institution and you should not hesitate to try this place, their sub sandwiches are fantastic and you won't be disappointed at any of their locations. Gonellas makes fantastic subs and has been a treat each time I've had them throughout my life, and there have been several. Their menu defines "no frills", you order your sandwich by the number of layers of meat and cheese you want. The only difficult choice is whether you want all those layers on a hard or soft roll. As for me, I prefer soft, but I've had both and neither disappoint. Some may gawk at their lack of customization, and if you want that I'd encourage you to go elsewhere. They've perfected what a sub should be here and their is no need to alter that, in my opinion. If you get them to go, ask for the dressing on the side so it's not too soggy when you're ready to enjoy it. As always, I encourage everyone to make their own opinion but I think this place is fantastic and will continue to patronize them every time I'm in the greater Detroit area. read more

I agree that value here is key. $4 for a quality 8" sub (grab some chips and that's two meals, really!) seems like a pretty amazing deal to me. I've not experimented too much, since I've only been here twice. I really like this little market. The staff were all really friendly, the prices on everything from wine to Germack snack mixes were uber-reasonable, and for those reasons it reminded me a little of some of the small-town/family owned grocers that I grew up with. If I were to grab another sub here, I think I'd take Dil's suggestions and get some mustard -- preferably something spicy if possible. I'd also be into adding some spicy peppers to the mix as well. I'm not in this area too often, but when next I am, I'd be happy to experiment with some other sammie options. read more

Went to Gonellas for the first time today first off what a deal! The prices can't be beat! Nowhere else will you find a sandwich this fresh for this cheap. I'm a big guy, and I went with the 12 layer sandwich for $6.50. It filled me! The meat is freshly cut and includes a wide selection of Italian meats. Completed with onions and lettuce and a good oil and vinegar. There are other options too both cheaper and more expensive. It will fill you. Next time I plan on trying their salads. The store itself has a wide selection of Italian foods and snacks, wine and soft drinks. Worth the drive there for both the price and the taste! read more

I was working my way around the Rouge River bridge construction and realized I was a block from Gonellas. I made a fast turn and got in just as they were prepping for the lunch rush. I ordered a 6 layer sandwich which is Italian cold cuts and cheese. Since I was on the road I had to pass up the potato salad. . Too my surprise and soon to be joy I found Better Made Jalapeño chips which I've never seen before. As always the sandwich on a chewy Italian sub bun with fresh ingredients is wonderful. The chips were great. Unlike most jalapeño chips these are regular Better Made chips not kettle cooked. Can't go wrong with Gonellas. read more

First time trying this place and it did not disappoint. It was recommended by my husband because it's right around the corner from his job. There's nothing fancy about it, but it sure is authentic and timeless. It's in an old building but the inside was very, very clean. It's a cross between a small convenience store and deli. The lady's that were working the deli were very nice and personable. I got the 8 layer with everything and (here's a good tip) EXTRA dressing! It really is so yummy I could drink it. The serving was more than enough to fill me up and I eat quite a bit. I can't wait to go back and try the hard roll and other delicious looking sides they have. Picture is of my husband's sandwich. Five stars because they are the BEST submarine sandwiches in the Detroit Area! Make sure you pay the extra dime to get the hard roll. Great sausage place too. You may have to ask them in advance to make sausage to fill your order. I had them make me ten pounds of Italian Sausage for the grill, as I was having a graduation party for my step son. Excellent sausages, lean flavorful and nobody that I know of got a piece of gristle, like you do from Dearborn brand sausages. My father knew about this place for years..... and kept it to himself. He did that a lot. Ask him how he voted, and his stock answer was "Its between me and God, and God aint talkin" OK. Same for his little places that he found. It was only a few years before he died that I actually wormed it out of him. The reason he told me was that he was too busy to leave work for lunch and since I went with him that day, I was a good choice to fetch things. He also broke a 3 inch wrench and dispatched me to the nearest Sears for a replacement, and 3 inches was the size of the bolt. So on the way back from Sears I was to pick up 2 subs. I had the opportunity to stop here today, and they haven't changed one bit. The subs are huge, and I was warned that a simple 12 layer sub would put me down for the count. I scoffed, having "sank" several of Tubby's and Subway versions this week alone, I didn't sink this one. One half is stull downstairs in the cold box waiting for lunchtime tomorrow. At 6 dollars they are a righteous bargain. If you are hungry, these will fill you up and then some. Gonellas also has a full range of Italian goodies like pasta, sauces and cheese. Oh, and I got a nice handful of olives as an appetizer for a mere 2.40. You can also get a t-shirt for $15 should you get the urge to do a little advertising for them. I dont think my father wouldve approved of the shirts, but I am darn sure that he would have approved of my lunch today. Usually it's "sighted sub, sank same", but today the tables were turned, and the sub sank me, Oh well, I'm still looking forward to enjoying the other half. and so it goes. read more
