Really great subs, nice cured meats, kind of a giant convenience store. The subs are both delicious and a fantastic value. Starting at $4 you can get an 8 inch sub with everything on it. For every dollar you add to the price, you get an extra full serving of meat. So they're all the same length, but you can really start piling on your meats and cheeses in outrageous layers. I got a sub with ham, bologna, salami, and hot capicola. If you ask for everything on it, you get piles of provolone, lettuce, tomato, some onions/hot peppers, and an oil-vinegar dressing which is always key. Theirs is great. I assumed "everything" on it would include yellow mustard but it didn't, and I wished it was there, but I'll ask for it next time. While they were making my sub, I was eyeing their prosciuttos, pancettas, and kielbasas. They all looked excellent. I'll also have to sample those next time around. For $6, I got my sub plus Better Made salt and vinegar chips, and a glass bottle of Coke. Steal of a deal. If any Detroiters are driving out to the Target shopping mall in Allen Park area, this is a great place to pick up a killer sub for lunch. There's no seating inside, and, of course, the area is mostly industrial, but if you keep driving away from the city a bit, on the same road you'll hit a public pool, kiddie park, high school area (I think this is Melvindale). I spent some time growing up in beauuuuutiful Melvindale (The Little City with a Big Heart) and every so often my dad and I would hit Gonellas for lunch. Flash forward about 20 years and my friends and I were making the pilgrimage to South Bend for the State game last year. And we wanted a three-foot sub so we wouldn't have to cook. Gonella's is a small Italian market in southwest detroit. The selection of groceries is some what limited in comparison to the bigger Alcomos that is roughly 5 minutes away. The reason to come to Gonella's is the subs! They make great Italian sandwiches with all the proper meats (capicole, prosciutto, saprasetta). The joy of it is that if you keep pitching out dollars, they'll keep stacking on meat as high as it can go! They also have a decent selection of all the usual suspects at the deli counter. This is one of the best Italian subs I've found between Chicago and New York. The place is super tucked away and not easy to find, but well worth the adventure. I recommend sticking with the straight up Italian, you can choose how many layers of meat and cheese you want, and definitely go with the hard roll if it's available for the real deal crispy chewy flakey goodness. Praise Jesus, the bridge on Fort Street is back open! We sent men to the moon and back faster in the late 1960's faster than these dorks were able to fix a draw bridge in Detroit. Now it is easier to get a great sandwich. Deli and store is lacking, big time. Don't expect to walk in there and get hit in the face with what most of us expect to be a nice Deli. Lot's of wasted space, little bit dirty and has a hasn't been updated since the early 1980's feel. The only thing that brings me into this place is the Sandwiches. Nothing else. Wonderful. I don't remember how I came to hear of Gonella's. In fact, despite growing up in Metro Detroit, I never heard of it until late last year. But I finally made my way there a few months ago. I love Italian subs. There's just something about pillowy bread, classic Italian-American dressing, cold cuts, cheese, finely shredded iceberg lettuce and onions, and tomatoes. It works, and always has. And at Gonella's, Italian subs are a specialty. I was tempted, albeit for a brief moment, to order the vaunted $8.50 sub, which is served with 18 layers of meat and three of cheese. I settled for 8 layers of meat and 2 layers of cheese, which I barely finished. Had to pair it with a bag of Better Made potato chips, which any proud Metro Detroiter would've done. Had Gonella's for the first time today. I tried the standard, 8-layer Italian on the soft roll. The Bread: AMAZING. Fresh and chewy. The perfect compliment to the meat. The Meat: Very good and very authentic. Next time I think I could manage with a 6-layer. The 8-layer is a massive sandwich for lunch. The Toppings: I got the sandwich as-is minus tomatoes. The sub sauce is tangy and delish. I could've used a little more , but it was delicious. This is a no-frills lunch spot inside of a small Italian grocery store. I didn't care for the sub I got at all. In fact, for probably the first time in my entire life, I threw half of my food in the garbage. After reading the reviews, I think I will try it one more time. One of my complaints was that the bread was gross especially because it was soaked in the juice -- the juice was good but the soggy disgusting bread was not. A lot of reviewers said to get the hard roll and I think I will definitely go back and try it. There has to be SOMETHING to all of these beautiful reviews. Some points to consider: - It's a crappy area, so if you pull up in your Mercedes, just keep in mind who is watching and know your situation. It's not a fearing for your life neighborhood but if you roll up in there dripping in gold and expensive merchandise, you might hold your items a little closer. - It's in a convenience store that is kinda filthy. The work areas seem clean but the place stinks like a Southwest Detroit party store. -The "menu" is just picking how much meat you want on your sub. It's confusing unless you have seen it before and know what you like. I had no idea what to order even though I knew I wanted an Italian... but I asked the lady making the sub for me what people usually get and she said 8 or 12 meat subs are the most popular, so I got that. It still doesn't make that much sense because there was not 8 slices of meat or 8 stacks of meat on my sub at all... I don't know how they arrive at that number... it's a mystery. -All things considered, it's a decent sized sub for a very low price. If you like how it tastes it would be a great value. -They have a variety of deli pasta salads and stuff to pick from but the pricing isn't as "fair" as the sub. None of it was labeled. Gonella's has by far the best sub that I've ever had in Detroit. It's cheap, the sub is huge, and it's very tasty. The best part about it is the bread. Make sure you tell them you want it on a hard roll or else they will just give you a soft one. The hard roll is awesome and totally makes the sub so much better! I recommend getting the house dressing on your sub, but they will put whatever you want on it. Their selection of drinks is endless including coke, pepsi and faygo in glass bottles. This is the most incredible sub I've had ever, and I have had subs in like 38 of the 50 states. I literally drive the 11 hours to Detroit to gorge myself on these once a year. I always get the 18/3 layer sub which for $8 is the best value in the world of sandwiches anywhere. It's enough meat for 3 grown men.
