Update: Update: TLDR: I was told they could fix a front differential in my daughters car but they misdiagnosed it as an axle problem. After the proper repair was performed at a different shop, they admitted the mistake, and refunded their fee, paid for towing, and over half the car rental. They were very professional, and did their utmost to make up for our trouble. If you live in this area, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND State Street as they truly are honorable and overall competent. GMM A frustrating experience. My daughter's Subaru Impreza had a bad front differential with front wheels skipping on turns. Another shop replaced both front axles and U joints, though only one was bad. A very nice service manager, John Turnbull told me they could take the transmission apart and check the front differential in the manual transmission assembly. My daughter drove 1 hour to their shop, had to rent a car, etc. I then was told the right front axle (one U joint-inner or outer not specified) was bad. After a 3 way call with my original shop, and learning that State Street now could NOT take the transmission apart, we had to tow it back to her hometown. The original shop again replaced the R front axle, but the problem persisted due to the bad front differential. We had to expensively replace the the differential/transmission-original shop credited us for all axle labor. My complaint is 3 fold: 1-I was led to believe they could work on the actual front differential after their diagnosis confirmation 2-misdiagnosis of U joint malfunction when I specifically stated most likely front differential problem with 2 new front axles 3-Free diagnostic checkup suggesting services too soon, and services clearly performed in service book left on front seat. I had requested refund for their inaccurate diagnosis work June 15 and John said he would look into request. read more

I have been taking my vehicles here since before it was a NAPA affiliate. Brandon and the other folks who work here are good at asking the right questions to diagnose problems. Pricing is not cheap, but it's fair, and the work is done well -- not sure I can say that about some other places in A2. This is about a mile from central campus, so I have been able to just take my bike with me, drop off the vehicle and then take my bike to campus, then ride back when it's ready (easier than coordinating rides with others). Note: they are not open on weekends. Not a problem for me, but might be for others. read more

What would it take for a person living in Ann Arbor to drive all the way up to Whitmore Lake for their car service? A 20 minute drive for most Arborites...for me 17 minutes. Straight up M23 or the scenic route, Whitmore Lake Road. My Prius had a headlamp that wasn't behaving and also a parking light that needed replacing, which I didn't discover until they pointed it out. I chatted over the phone with Brandon about the cost of a new headlamp as my local shop, a 22 minute drive on the SE side of Ann Arbor, seems to have closed it's doors. Kris greeted me as I pulled up with my car and said Brandon had mentioned me the other day. Brandon looked over my Prius' eyeballs while Kris offered me coffee and we chatted inside. Nice, clean, large waiting room with lots of tables and chairs if you just want to bring your laptop or iPad to work or play. I'm guessing they have WiFi but didn't ask because Kris and I were talking too much. When Brandon was finished, he let us know that the tilted (who knew) headlamp was straightened and he put in a new parking light. They sent me on my way without a charge for the part or service. Although this quick job was done right outside, my peek inside the service area told me that it was a clean organized operation. Thanks you State Street Auto. Perhaps you should consider adding a picture on Yelp of the waiting area and confirm if you have WiFi for the customers. You might not mind waiting for service completion if it's longer than the ten minutes when the waiting area is so nice. I went in for an oil change and received a free inspection. The inspection found I had a broken boot on my CV joint. Am employee there (Kris I believe) was a friendly SHARK and told me to repair my CV joint it would be upwards of $2000 USD for labor and parts. Kris was accommodating. I had bought a used vehicle that I was told was clean of any issue. I decided to take it into State Street Auto Service. Kris reviewed the past maintenance records and did an inspection. After the inspection, he gave me the rundown of expected service charges before working on the car, which provided me with information and insight on maintenance. The car needed updates involving the brakes, belt, and oil. Kris did recommend a transmission flush, but not until 20,000 more miles, and provided the expected price for that if I chose to return. My mother in law and I went here earlier today to have the trailer hitch removed from her van. Dan, the tech, removed the hitch with a cutting torch, which is what we wanted. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly and did his best to keep the quoted price as close to what was charged as possible. He succeeded by the way. Having bought a used Sprinter RV without inspecting it first, I was holding my breath as the check engine light came on on my drove home from picking it up. My son also had an upcoming sporting event the following weekend (which we purchased the RV for). They guys could have really taken advantage of me. They found a $4.99 O-ring that had broken causing the CEL. They also did a post purchase inspection to ease my mind about the purchase. AND on top of that, they got me back on the road in time for our event. We just drove 9 hours to Missouri for the event. Sprinter ran like a charm. No over-selling. Honest. Good people.
