The food was delicious. The gumbo was great. The customer service was excellent. Nice place to take the family to grab a fast casual meal. Next time, we'll need to try the redfish and other fish dishes.

Redfish

Service was super nice at the ordering counter. She was super helpful and welcoming. On Sunday's you can get 20% and she made that easy. The space is very nice and clean and the bathrooms are as well. The food is really good. Now they were out of white rice and subbed with dirty on my gumbo and I might be ordering it that way from now on! Lol. They forgot to change my bread to the cornbread but it was still delicious. Everything was freshly made and very tasty. The fried chicken tenders were just perfect. The cheesecake is super soft and fluffy. Really great place in the neighborhood.

OL Pecan Crusted Rainbow Trout

Both dishes were spicier than I anticipated. The Cup of Crawfish Bisque was a good size, creamy, and had some nice sized pieces of crawfish. The portion of Rainbow Trout was huge -- but the dish was just overall a bit too spicy for my taste. If I ordered this again, I would request the option for the sauce to be on the side, because by the time it was delivered by DoorDash, it had pretty much soaked into the filet.

OL Cajun Cobb Salad

I was working on a new smoothie king location at the end of the building where this restaurant is so I went to have lunch there and it was phenomenal. I ordered the Cajun Cobb salad and I was going to get some ranch dressing for it but the employee said it came with a special sauce they make and recommended it so I said ok . Everything on the plate was delicious and the dressing they make was very tasty.. Lots fresh veggies and the chicken was full of flavor. The bacon ,boiled egg and chicken makes it a very filling meal.Best salad I've had in a while I recommend. The restaurant is very clean and the staff was very friendly. I'll definitely be back to try other menu items.

Boudin balls
Nicki M.

I definitely expected more out of this place, but I found it to be just ok. The boudin balls were dry and not like boudin much at all. The crawfish bisque was delicious and creamy! The stuffed shrimp were also a bit dry and more breading than I prefer. The fries were nice and crispy and the red beans and rice had great flavor. So overall it was just hit and miss for me. I'll likely give it another go and try a few other things. Service was great and helpful. Ambiance was chill and laid back.

The crab finger appetizer smelled HORRIBLE! I promise it would have sent me to the hospital had i eaten it. Doggone shame!!!!

Beignets?? More like air puffs

I want to like this place because they have the vibe that says Louisiana cooking. But, their "breakfast" is a joke. My advice please cut it out because you'll lose money on keeping the breakfast option. All the other plates I've had have been ok. I also didn't like how the manager or whomever just sat there and let the individual taking orders just seem to act like they didn't care to be there. Made it obvious to others behind me as well. The one positive is the music is on point and sets the mood.

Oysters
Ashley C.

These oysters were SO good. They have a special in February, $1/oyster. I wish I knew sooner. I always enjoy this place. It's my go to for Cajun food.

No matter what we order it's always good !!

The food is always seasoned and sooo good!! My family loves this location!! They have great customer service!! We will return !!

The atmosphere here is lively, the bartenders and servers remember everyone, and people are happy to be out and in their community. From the bar, you have to try the El Pepino, their version of a spicy cucumber margarita. At once refreshing and delicious. From the kitchen, everything we've ever had here was fantastic, but I especially recommend their steak. The cherry on top here was the treatment my wife (a vegetarian) received when ordering a slightly nuanced modified salad. She wanted the Jalapeño Chicken Salad with the chicken substituted for avocado. Not only did they happily serve her that, the kitchen staff came out to the bar to personally confirm she was alright with the other ingredients because the jalapeños were fried using eggs. When I explained that I had never been charged in the past, she told me she had been working there a long time and had never seen me before. At that point, it felt like I was being called a liar. I made it clear that I had no problem paying the charge--I was only asking when the policy changed. The issue wasn't the cost; it was the way I was treated. This restaurant definitely aims to please. I was being very specific about what I wanted for my ribeye steak tonight; waitress Jessie was awesome and listened carefully to my requests. And then to make sure that I was absolutely happy, she brought Chef Kenneth to the table to discuss what I was looking for. Kenneth returned from the kitchen with three beautiful-looking ribeye steaks and we discussed which one would give me the best dining experience. He does some of the butchering himself so he knew exactly what I was looking for. I ended up being served the most fabulous Wagyu steak I've had in a very long time. Unlike the other steaks that can have a seasoning on them, the Wagyu is just salt and pepper and then is served with a beautiful compound butter slathered all over it. They make that butter in-house and it has wine and shallots and bone marrow and other wonderful stuff. Trust me, it's amazing! I ordered extra on the side and poured that all over the top of the steak. Delicious!! Sometimes little things count and it was served with grilled onion that was tasty. I could have had a side of mashed potatoes or asparagus, but I decided to treat myself and try the mac-n-cheese instead. Half of that food was my lunch the next day, so I left enough room for dessert, where my choice was the apple pie bread pudding with cinnamon roll ice cream. That was nice and moist and I enjoyed it. Overall, this was a really great dining experience and I'm so glad that bad traffic gave me the excuse to come here. Will definitely plan a return visit!!

On the other hand, I want to recognize our waiter, who was excellent throughout the meal. Raymond was attentive, friendly, and did his best to make us feel comfortable again after the interaction with the manager. His professionalism and kindness were the highlight of our visit. Unfortunately, the food also fell short of expectations. In particular, I would not recommend the mussels. The flavor was unpleasant and left a very bad aftertaste, making them one of the least enjoyable dishes we ordered. Good customer service isn't just about enforcing rules--it's about how those rules are communicated. Unfortunately, the manager's approach, combined with the disappointing food, overshadowed what could have been an enjoyable dining experience.

Our server was friendly, attentive, and had a great attitude from start to finish. Unfortunately, almost everything else felt like a step backward. The menu has been reduced dramatically. Once you take away the oyster selections, there are very few entrée choices left. Many of the dishes that kept me coming back are no longer offered. The drink menu has also been cut down significantly. They used to have a much better selection, and it just doesn't feel like the same restaurant anymore. Another frustration is that they're in an area with poor cell service, yet customer Wi-Fi is no longer available. Whether you're trying to check a message, work while you eat, or simply stay connected, it's almost impossible. As for the food, it was just okay. Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out either. I ordered the crab cake with the arugula salad and a shrimp cocktail. Ironically, the small arugula salad that came with the single crab cake was the best part of my meal. The crab cake and shrimp cocktail were fine, but neither was memorable or something I'd come back for. Overall, it feels like Half Shells has lost much of what made it special. Between the limited menu, reduced drink options, lack of Wi-Fi, and average food, it's no longer the destination it once was for me. I truly hope they reconsider some of these changes because I'd love to see this restaurant return to what made it such a great place to dine.

I didn't recall anything bad about the place, and given the rave reviews since then, I thought it was time to return. Based on reviews, we showed up early on a Friday evening (~5 pm). Even at that time, it was mostly full, but we were able to snag seats at the bar, which is first come first serve. We ordered the "regular" grilled oysters (5/5), which were anything but regular, as they were topped with peanuts and a really great flavor. I'd get these again. Fair warning, these take 20 minutes to come out, which I didn't mind, but I did not realize that they would not bring us anything else until after the oysters since these are considered an app. I thought they'd just bring things out as they were ready. This meant, we did not get our crawfish until we were already sitting there for an hour. About halfway into the wait for the crawfish (after the oysters), the fried rice (1/5) showed up, and I have to say, it was underwhelming. It came out room temperature, which to me is cold, and I thought this was just how they do it. Except 15 minutes later, the seats next to us got their fried rice, and it came out piping hot. You could still see the steam coming off of it. Besides being cold, I didn't think the fried rice was that good in terms of flavor. I also generally prefer the short grain rice, and this was more of a long grain. Once the crawfish showed up, we were well past an hour, so we dove right into it. Both the garlic butter and combo mix were great flavor - some of the best I've had in Houston. However.... it made me remember why we did not return. About 20% of the crawfish were TINY. And by tiny, I mean they were smaller than my pinky finger. Maybe I'm a crawfish snob, but at this time of the season, there should not be that many tiny crawfish. Maybe a few small ones, but not tiny. Crawfish flavor = 5+/5, crawfish quality = 2/5, crawfish cook = 3/5. Then I made the mistake of ordering a cluster of snow crab. That took another 30+ min to come out, and it was again room temperature. The service at the bar was fine (4/5), but the kitchen service (1/5) is not something I want to experience again, especially not for the crawfish quality/size. Yes, the flavor was amazing, but I'm not fighting for a table for lukewarm food and 30 min wait time for each dish. The pricing was some of the lowest I've seen ($8.99/lb crawfish), but I'd rather pay $1 more at other places for the quality.
