    Café Miel

I heard great reviews about this place. Unfortunately, this place did not live to the hype in my opinion. I ordered a cafe miel and I did not personally like the taste of my cafe (to each their own). Their drink selection does not offer much sweet options as a fair warning for those who like their drinks extra sweet. Giving this place that second star because the place itself looks cool although the service was meh and there's not that much seating around the building. I unfortunately will not be coming back.

I highly recommend stopping here and picking up a 12 ounce bag of A Love Supreme. The beans are freshly roasted + packed here at THE MOTHERSHIP. Upon picking up a bag of beans they give you a small iced or hot coffee (your choice). I also picked up a white vinyl copy of Chicago's very own Brigette Calls Me Baby new album. Went home and plopped it on the turntable. Great album!

Such a cute and cool spot! A very solid vanilla latte. The place is decorated super cool and I've been meaning to come after hearing so much about their coffee grounds. Highly recommend!

I could tell they really take pride in their coffee! My husband and I walked in knowing we wanted some caffeine to help fuel our day, but not positive which brew. The barista was so passionate, telling us all about the cold brews. My husband enjoyed his "Brown Acid," and my "Vanilla Suburb" was delightful! Bonus points for a fun interior with themed art, tying into the Mothership!

Great coffee, got a mile coffee YUM! Smoke street parking parallel only. Nice upstairs there too and lots of seating. We loved the fun art on the walls. Service was quick too!

This one caught me off guard. Shockingly delicious. The cashier was super friendly and helped me understand the menu and what they did. Greatly appreciated. She also listened to me babble about my travels and kept a smile the entire time. The space is super cool and eclectic space vibe. Not overly "nerdy" but easily appealing to the masses. Or maybe super nerdy and I missed it lol. The do-rite fritter was fresh and delivered to them first thing that morning while I was there waiting. While they don't make them they have a good standard. The dolor de oro what's a shocker for me. I love spicy and I've never had a spicy coffee so this was a first and wow it worked so well. Not too much not too little. The. Nailed it! I would absolutely go back in fact I did. Had one for breakfasts and one post lunch. 5 out of 5 and maybe my only complaint would be more non chocolate bagged bean options.

Great location, many beverage and pastry options, open later than most nearby shops, reasonable prices, etc. The service of the staff is always top notch! Overall, a great local shop and cafe within the Chicago dark matter family. It remains within the top of my rotation!

Firstly, I have to say that I really enjoy the interior of every Dark Matter Coffee shop I've been in. The staff is also very nice and pleasant to deal with as well. While I have had dark matter coffee in other locations, nothing seems to be better than actually going to their own shops. Their coffee is smooth, delicious, and balances the bitterness of coffee with the subtle notes naturally in the beans. So far, my favorite drink to get here is the whiskey barrel aged mocha. This drink is smooth, oakie (from the barrel), with a pleasant subtle but comforting whiskey flavor. You can also still taste the notes from the espresso used, which compliment the flavors. I also recommend using half & half over the regular milk for a smoother experience. I highly recommend Dark Horse Coffee, and if I could get this every day, I would. Maybe one day I'll try another option, but not today.

Unique decor on the inside. Limited coffee drinks. Cool merch for sale. Friendly service. Wish that had seating inside.

Fun coffee spot! I got the mocha and it was good, the service was great as well! Will definitely be visiting on our next trip to the city.

Love, love, loved this coffee shop!! Came here on a rainy Wednesday and it was still pretty busy! I got the agave latte along with the ham and cheese croissant. Both were so good and I have zero complaints. The baristas at the front were also super attentive and helpful. My only regret is not buying some coffee beans to go (which btw they also grind up front). Will definitely be back!!

Dark Matter is known for their impressive specialty coffee concoctions. After multiple people told us we needed to visit while in Chicago, we went to their location known as The Mothership on N Western Ave. They're known for their Draft Iced Coffee list, which are coffees at triple strength brewed hot then flash cooled. The Chocolate City Draft Iced Coffee was very smooth and an easy drinker for a regular warm day, one of their Draft Iced Coffees had beer hops that reminds me of an IPA-meets-Stout, and the Vanilla Suburbs Nitro is infused with cacao nibs and vanilla beans without any added sugar. As I was very indecisive and it was my first time there, the barista Rosemary was so kind and let me do small samples of these three Draft Iced Coffees, which was a great experience and honestly I think they should start selling coffee flights because their offerings are so unique and great for side-by-side comparisons. From their specialty drink menu, I went with the Iced Cafe Miel, which looked a lot like the iced caramel macchiatos you see at Starbucks because the honey drizzle around the sides looks like caramel. The Latin America espresso blend that they used for the Cafe Miel is called Unicorn Blood, and it went really nicely with the honey and oat milk in the drink. I loved learning that the honey used is sourced from the same farm in Guatemala as the coffee! They also make their own high-quality chocolate bars that are absolutely delicious, and there are three different designs/chocolates that you can choose from at the front counter. Chris went with the Barrel-Aged Mocha, which included barrel-aged espresso, vanilla syrup, chocolate, and milk. He said he couldn't really taste the barrel-aged aspect but that it was a nice beverage. We also ordered the draft oat milk latte, which I would recommend for anyone who doesn't want their coffee to taste too strong, as it was mainly the flavor of oat milk.

Dark matter has excellent coffee- I had the chocolate city iced coffee. They have excellent vibes and cool decor. They staff members were super helpful and friendly. Helped me decide on a drink. I came here on a Sunday morning around 8:30am not too busy. The only downfall is this location has no seating. But they have other locations that do!

I wasn't particularly impressed by the selection, and the freshness of the donuts left something to be desired. The presentation also took away from the experience. Seeing donuts sitting exposed in boxes where customers can easily view them isn't particularly appealing and doesn't create the freshest visual impression. I tried the maple pecan glazed donut, which was overwhelmingly sweet. Even after just one bite, the intense sugar rush was immediate and overpowering, making it difficult to enjoy the other flavors. The vanilla donut was the better of the two--pleasantly doughy, though it still lacked the freshness I was hoping for. Overall, this was an average experience. The donuts were serviceable, but neither the selection, presentation, nor freshness gave me much reason to return.

It also doesn't hurt that they are open from 6am to Midnight - perfect for those sudden doughnut cravings! One thing that can be improved is how they handle big orders. I recently ordered over 5 dozen doughnuts and it came in 6 boxes and a small bag. First problem: they don't deliver. Second and bigger problem is that they don't pack big orders so you can carry them out. How the heck am I going to carry 6 boxes and a bag of donuts??? Maybe they want to keep their business "small".
