As you might have read, eons ago, when I was moving, the scam artists at 3 Guys Moving absolutely trashed a bunch of vintage electronics that I had during a move. Fast-forward years later, and I take my late 50's early 60's Magnavox Record Player Console to Patrick and the boys at Orvac... So I take the handy cart out in their lot and roll my record player on in... Patrick and another gent take a few looks at it and the cartridge + needle, which I figured needed to be replaced. Within a few seconds, Patrick had the arm cartridge connection dislodged and had the needle ready-to-order. His partner then came back into the mix and they pushed the cartridge and needle back in its "seat" and to me -- it looked as good as new. Being the honest and hardworking geniuses that they are, they asked me to take the console home, fire it up with some Chuck Berry (okay, so I added that part), and let them know if it's fixed. If it is, great -- if not -- they could order my new needle for me. Sure enough, I get home, throw on "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," and the console is kicking in Hi-Fi Sound (remember that stuff?)! Thanks boys, for saving me time, money, and being honest and hard-working and great at your job -- I am forever an Orvac customer because of the treatment I received. read more

Orvac is one of those places that shouldn't exist any more, but it does! It's an old fashioned style electronics store, the type that you can lose yourself in for hours. Sure they have components, and lamps, and leds, and switches, and cases, and every do-hickey you could possible want, but then there's more! Cable, stereo parts, speakers, tools, 19" rack parts, phone cable, teleco parts, and yet there is still more! No really, remember the old surplus stores, with the boxes of electronic goodies you could dig through, yep they have those, it's a trip back in time. They actually have even more stuff, plan on spending a hour at least to check everything out. But the best part, the staff! How many places still say "Hi" as you walk in the door, and can I help you find anything? Even better, the people who work there know their products and are more than happy to help you find a solution to a problem. I have been shopping at Orvac for 20 years, and the still surprise me with what they have. Recommended. read more

I called ahead of time for the tech guy fabian. His hours are 8am-4pm, monday-friday. I went to Orvacs at 11:30am today, and Fabian was not there. When i asked where he was, I was told that he was running errands. Since Fabian was "thee" tech guy, i couldn't get helped properly. read more

All the staff here are extremely helpful and have a well stocked assortment of electronics. I came in with a pretty unique problem to solve and Fabian was able to help talk me through a bunch of different options until we found one that would best suit my need. Even though the part I was looking for was out of stock, Fabian helped me to contact other branches and keep it on hold for me till I could pick it up. Definitely would recommend coming here over a Fry's or a Best Buy. Staff here is much more friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Maybe I came on an off day? This place reminds me of Fry's, employees who avoid eye contact, leave the area, and otherwise make it known they have no interest in speaking to or helping a customer. Sometimes I just go there to browse the neat surplus stuff, and often I find things I never knew I needed but just gotta have. What a find. I used go to F*y's for my electronic stuffs but I had make a trip to get there. Friend of mine told me about this place when the switch of the tool that I use daily failed as I need the part in hurry. So I went there in the morning hoping they have the part for it. The place looks pretty big and filled with stuffs and I knew I was gonna get lost. So I asked the lady who greeted me for the switch. She just not directed me, actually went to switch department and searched for what I was looking for and got me one and made sure it was correct voltage. So excited to find part quickly, so I decided to shop more for other stuffs as I would normally get from Fry's. WoW! I find the price is cheaper for the same stuffs that I buy from F*y's so I ended up spending more than I was planning. lol anyway, now I know where I am going for my electronic need. read more

I ripped out a connection in a battery chip that I use frequently, and someone I knew recommended Orvac to help me find a solution. I never heard of this place but thought I'd give it a shot. Upon my arrival I was greeted right away and told them that I'd need a tiny piece soldered but to be careful because of the chip that is right next to the connection. Fabian was the person who helped me, but with the way he fixed my problem he should have been named Fabio. He soldered my connection back together with ease and told me about an 18650 battery that is better than mine (that was cheaper than the battery I already have). So I got my piece soldered extremely well for only $5 dollars on site (although he doesn't normally do that, it was just a small item so he was able to do it for me because of this). Then I also found a super 18650 battery that I didn't know existed thanks to his advice. I never heard of this place before, but now I am definitely going to be a regular. Lots of hard-to-find parts and accessories here! The employees are very knowledgeable and courteous (for the most part). There is an older guy that works in the back of the store near the surveillance products that can be a little abrasive, but I'm sure it's because he gets asked hundreds of stupid questions every day. They carry a large stock of power adapters, and the prices are awesome. If you are looking for cable, they have great deals here as well. I priced CAT5 cable, and the same spool was going for DOUBLE the price somewhere else. This place also has that "Main Street Ma & Pop" feel to it. They actually say "Hello" to you when you walk in! They post a 3d printer on craigslist. I contact Collin through craigslist email. He was telling me on Sunday and Monday morning that they have a 3d printer velleman k8200 available. I asked location. Monday morning they replied to me the address. I came by from a far place to check out the printer. When I walked into the store, all the staffs were really busy either cleaning or organizing items, so I decide to find it myself and I looking around the store to look for the 3d printer (good twenty minutes to find the same stand from Craigslist picture.). Suddenly I don't see anything with the 3d printer. I decided to talk to one of the workers. He seemed busy because he was wearing a headset and it seems like if he was talking to himself or the phone. Then he called me up and asked if I needed help. I asked if they had k8200 3d printer. Then he told me that they sold out last Friday. What pissed me off the most, is that they told me to wait and ask for another person to see if they have it, and while they were talking, they were using the time to try to figure out who send the email. I was really pissed off that they told me that they sold on Friday and wasted my gas and time. They are really unorganized. They are very unorganized. While I was wondering, It looks like most of workers don't know anything. Most of them are really busy or seem like they are busy. I don't know recommend going unless you know that they have or it's a very common things like led or electronics. If I were you either called in with two different coworkers to see if they have the item or even know if that item exist and do not follow their false advertising. I was very disappointed with this business. The is only one way to exit, which was through the cashier way. They put in so many blockage or stuff around the exit. It made really hard for me to exit the building. There so much stuff and just little gaps to go through. I am kind of concern about their safety and customers safety if a fire or earthquake happens. It's like a big store full of stuff. Lots of stuff covering the exit door. read more

Been a customer for at least 15 years or more. I go here because I KNOW they will have what I want/need and if I can't see it, all I have to do is ask. Case in point: recently needed to replace a rocker switch on an amplifier, a German made switch. Brought in the broken one, gave it to a clerk, he found and handed me the exact brand new replacement and I took it to the cashier. I had expected it to cost more than the $5 so it was a happy surprise. I have also in the past bought grain of wheat light bulbs, LEDs, wire, battery holders, small tools, soldering irons, etc. While I have not purchased any myself they also have a good selection of audio equipment and supplies, connectors, speaker and mic cable, car stereo and more. read more

One of the last places where you can walk in, buy something, and have it in your hands that same day. The sales guys are incredibly knowledgeable and can help you with any project. Orvac is my save-me store. It's everything from an old fashioned component level electronic supply to a home automation shop to a tech-heads Big Lots. They have a surprisingly deep selection of electronic tools, supplies, bulk wire, networking supplies, racks, speaker fabrication supplies, bench-top tech gear, etc. It's quite rare I don't walk out of there with exactly what I came for or an even better solution than what I was first looking for. They're very well staffed and they're friendly and knowledgeable. Thier prices are very reasonable considering how much they keep in stock. You can buy a little cheaper online but then you wouldn't be supporting a gem of a store like this one. I'll take immediate gratification over a few day's of waiting/saving a dollar or so. I do wish they had longer hours but, as a life-long night owl, I could say that about every store on earth. read more

This place is the best electronics store in OC. Forget about Fry's, Ford Electronics, Microcenter, etc... Orvac has everything. I visited the store on a Friday, and went straight to the pro desk, and bought a "Kendall Howard" wall mount network enclosure. You cannot buy these anywhere else. The guy at the pro-desk was very helpful, and located the product for me, and even gave me a "pro" discount. My only gripe about this place, is that Orvac does not sell large 3 inch grommets to use in these network enclosure boxes to protect your wires. Nor do they sell extra "Kendall Howard" accessories for the enclosures. They guy at the pro-desk even helped me stuff the big box into my little car. read more

I often hear people talking about how online commerce, Amazon being the biggest player, is killing 'brick and mortar' stores. Well, my visit today is a perfect example of why that is getting truer every day. Because I had already researched what I needed, I knew I could have ordered it online, but being that I like to support local businesses and am willing to pay a few dollars more for something I can put my hands on today, I went to Orvac's. After searching for a good 10 mins and being ignored by 2 employees I finally gave up and asked someone for help - ironically, I had to go to the rear counter and ask one of the 2 employees who had previously ignored me. I was quickly advised that what I needed wasn't available, not because they didn't have it, but because no one makes it, which couldn't be more incorrect. So, what was this elusive component? A 12v 80A relay. Something I bought there a few years ago, but for whatever reason they don't stock anymore, or they have them somewhere else and the employee I asked wasn't aware of it. I actually think the later is closer to the truth because when I asked him for the "12 volt 80 amp relay" he took me to their fuse section. I repeated, "Relay, 80 amp Relay". He took me to the relay section, but in route said that 70 Amp is as big as they come. After leaving the store I spent less than 2 minutes ordering what I needed online. It will be at my front door tomorrow. Sorry for such a long winded review but I sometimes think that local business owners need a wake-up call as to how big a threat online commerce poses to their business. The days of people beating a path to your door because you are the only game in town are over, now all you have to offer is stellar customer service, the businesses who embrace this new business model will survive those who don't will go away. read more

Some things are high but many are extremely competitive if not crazy low. Still hard to beat either way. read more
