There was great service by our Hibachi chef and our waitress, Evalyn (honestly, she has a good chance at being a comedian, she's just delight, fabulous, and funny!) we enjoyed the hibachi show with Christian greatly as well as the ambiance of delighted laughter of all patrons over flaming onion volcanos and delicious food (shrimp, chicken, salmon, steak, and veggies). My latest stop exploring every sushi joint in the Twin Cities - Osaka Maplewood - 4 stars! DECOR: Like the other Osaka locations, the Maplewood vibe is okay, nothing special, with Japanese themed details throughout. The main thing I always notice is the Osaka locations are BIG, with a significant square footage. Unfortunately, there's always a sad, lonely looking fish in a giant aquarium with inadequate lighting and no habitat...just water and glass. SERVICE: As expected, the service was excellent. This time I sat at the sushi bar. So I got attention from the sushi master and a waitress too. The service was on-spot and attentive without being overbearing. FOOD: I went with my usual hot green tea, chicken skewers (a hot "kitchen" appetizer), and my usual 3 tuna based sushi rolls. I got 2 traditional style rolls and one more elaborate "special" roll. All of my rolls were very good. The chicken skewers were really good too. They came with a peanut sauce that had something else in it (lemon or lime?) that really made it great. The sushi chef also gave me a special wasabi that was excellent. It was more watery than usual and it had some other interesting ingredients, like possibly onion and something else. Yum! CLEANLINESS: From what I can tell, the cleanliness seems to be pretty good. I always checkout the restrooms after a few bad experiences. It seems to be a good litmus test for what's going on with hygiene at an establishment. Everything was all satisfactory there. LOW CARBOHYDRATE: It's easy to eat low-carb, keto, carnivore style at Osaka. I stick with an animal based appetizer and sushi rolls with a moderate amount of plant material. The sushi was good but the rolls were pretty loose and the spicy tuna on one of my rolls had an interesting texture but overall it had a good flavor and a variety of toppings. We had a reservation for 10 people at 6:30 PM and arrived early at 6:20, only to be directed to the bar while waiting for our table. Unfortunately, there was no bartender present, leaving us unable to order drinks. We were finally seated at a Hibachi grill at 6:40 PM, but the delays continued. It took 15 minutes for a server to take our drink orders, another 10 minutes to receive them, and an additional 15 minutes before we could even place our food orders. Meanwhile, we watched as two other groups were seated after us and served by a Hibachi chef well before we were. After waiting an exhausting 1 hour and 20 minutes, I asked to speak with a manager about the delays. A server assured me she would check, only to return and claim that the manager was too busy to speak with me. However, she apologized and said we would receive a discount for the poor service. When our Hibachi chef finally arrived--nearly 20 minutes later--he was excellent, though two of our orders were incorrect. At the end of the meal, when the check arrived, there was no discount applied. Our server seemed unaware of the arrangement, and after some back-and-forth, I learned that there was no manager on duty at all that night. This meant that the original server had lied about speaking to one. Eventually, a minimal 10% discount was applied, but by that point, the damage had been done. To top it off, the restroom was in unacceptable condition, adding to the overall disappointment. If not for my niece's birthday celebration, I would have left long before the food even arrived. Between the extreme wait times, dishonest staff, and lack of accountability, this was easily one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Let me start off by saying I would give it no stars if I could. I would say there was maybe 4 tables of people in the whole place. It took 10 minutes for our couple of sodas and waters to be brought to us. 2 whole meals were not accounted for of a table of 5, Witch shouldn't be that hard right? Refills and sauce took another 20-25 minutes once finished. Once the waitress came back to check on us 30 minutes later we told them to forget about the forgot meals we just want the check. Osaka is always a fun place to go especially if you have a big group. I mean who doesn't love fire, sake and Asian food right?!? We had the hibachi which they come to your table and make the food in front of you. You pick your meat (they do have a vegetarian option but it's just more of the veggies you already get). You also get onion soup, salad, two shrimp, the meat or meats you chose, white rice/fried rice (upcharge) and veggies and noodles. It is such a fun experience and the food is really good. Decided to try out the Maplewood Osaka - not impressed. I went on a Friday afternoon to get happy hour in the bar area. They wouldn't let my friend get a table until both of us were there (even though there was only one seated table in the whole restaurant.) We ordered apps & sushi. Our server got our order terribly wrong. Between apps, sushi rolls and hand rolls, he was quite confused. We said it was fine and tried what he gave us. The gyoza was undercooked but edible. The salmon in my sushi roll had a funky taste, definitely wasn't fresh. I'll stick with the Roseville location from now on. read more

This was our first time at this location. Never been a big fan of osaka but was invited by family for dinner. Our waiter was horrible. It took about 45 minutes just to get water. He screwed up on everyones soup and salad. There was multiple food allergies at our table that he absolutely disregarded to even let the cook know. Once the cooked started screwing up due to the waiters mistakes, there was no coming back. The food was absolutely disgusting everything including the meat was cooked in soy sauce When i asked to speak with the manager the guy didn't even get up to acknowledge me at all after his employee asked for him to speak with me. I had to walk over to him and ask if he didn't want to speak with me. The man gave me absolute attitude and did not want to speak. At that point i didn't want to spend a dime in there. Osaka where have you been? I have been looking for a Japanese style grill for quite sometime in the St.Paul area, and thanks to YELP I found one !!! It took me awhile to decide on going here since all of the photo's on Yelp for this restaurant showed Sushi only and most of the reviews talked so highly of this. Finally I came across a review that mentioned the Hibachi, still unsure if this was going to be what I was looking for, I took chance and stopped in for dinner. What wonderful surprise when we walked in and were immediately greeted kindly by two hostesses and the manager. They brought us back to the large Hibachi area I think they had at least 8 cooking stations that hold 10 people per station. Once seated we asked about the wine selection and decided on a bottle of wine. The manager was so kind he actually came over with a sample of the wine before bringing us a bottle to be sure it was exactly what we wanted. Proceeding to a very nice little menu for a Hibachi grill we were able to order Filet Mignon & Chicken as our main dish, with Fried rice, noodles, soup & salad for sides. The excitement of the night was our wonderful Chef Tim, who put on a great show full of comedy and skill. Tim kept everyone at the table involved with his flashy cooking style (Flames and Cutlery Tricks) and constant jokes, also a little extra Sake guzzling for us all as Tim had a pour for us all and would use is signature line "More SAKE make more happy". The wait staff was also excellent and would have your dishes and plates cleared before you knew it making room for the next entree that Tim was cooking up. Osaka is a throwback to how a dining experience should be, with every single employee from the busboy to the manager clearly wanting each and every customer to have a great experience and feel like Kings & Queens for the night. I looked on Yelp and the hours indicated that they are open M-F 12:00 to 10:PM, I called to make a reservation over and over and no answer, no ability to leave a message. Finally i reached them at 1:00, and the response was " No we are open at 3:00. I indicated that YELP lists hours as 12-10. he told me no that is not true. Had the worst restaurant experience of my life here. I've been to Hibachi before at least 10 times but just never this location. 10 of us went out for Hibachi for my brothers graduation. We had reservations at 7:30pm and got there on time. We got seated shortly upon arrival. There was a group before us that got seated first and they did not have any reservations. We waited 15 minutes for water and our server did not take our order until 30minutes after we were seated. While taking our orders we kept ordering the menu #H13 for example and our server just kept telling us that she doesn't know the meal number after working there for a few years. Maybe you should try to remember then? Our 5 sushi rolls came out 30minutes after we ordered which I isn't a big deal. The worst part of this experience was that we had to wait 2hours after being seated before our chef finally came to cook for our table. We didn't end up leaving until 10pm. This is absolute nonsense!! The sushi was mediocre. The chef was not very friendly and slathered so much oil and butter onto all the food. Everything for hibachi was so overly salted. The chef even nudged our server to clear the table so he could do his job. On top of that this place has no AC and the floors everywhere were super oily and slippery. We were sweating the whole time and complained about the horrible wait time and AC to our Caucasian server whom called herself the person in charge that night. She told us that they normally don't accept walk ins but somehow accepted a few that night. Our bill came to $290 and she gave us a 10% discount but apparently that does not include any seafood which was more than half of the bill so we only got $14 off our entire meal. I'm not sure if it's the location, the strip mall facade, the fact that I pretend I have some indie cred, or the fact I can't necessarily think of anything either great nor bad to say about Osaka, but in the end it has landed me at a middle-of-the-road perspective of this joint. Appearances here are a bit deceiving, as inside the strip mall facade Osaka has a fairly sizable sushi bar, a number of teppanyaki tables and a decently sized bar area; the space is much more sizable and inviting than it looks from the outside. I have only sat in the two bar areas, but their full menu is available regardless of where you choose to sit. The cuisine has been a bit of a mixed bag. I've had some surprisingly enjoyable dishes here (pineapple lobster being tops on that list), but I have never been too excited with their sushi. First time here, visiting from San Diego. Sushi lover and have been to my share of very busy sushi spot, corporate and mom and pop shops. Food: ordered miso soup and a rainbow roll. Miso soup lacked flavor, almost like they used a low sodium broth. Rainbow roll was actually decent. Overall 3/5 Service: sloooooow. The sushi side was dead, we were the second full table in a room with 10 tables. Miso soup came out first in a reasonable time. The rest of the food for a party of 5 took almost 50 minutes. The worst part is that nobody came to update us on the status. 1/5. Overall I would not recommend this place if it takes this long with it being so dead. Sushi is just ok. Osaka is one of the closest sushi spots to home, and I knew of its location but never really bothered to stop by until one afternoon for lunch. It was a nice change to enter a sushi restaurant without it being overly crowded (but that's not always a good sign). Their menu wasn't exactly the cheapest and happy hour specials were pretty mediocre, especially for a spot that wasn't very bustling. I decided to order the American Favorite (6 pieces sushi and 1 Spicy Tuna and 1 Yellow-tail roll) and it arrived pretty quickly and presentation was alright. Nothing too fancy. Visually, it looked fresh, but the same couldn't be said taste wise. I decided to come back a few weeks later to give lunch another try. It was around noon and as expected, it was very quiet. This time I decide to try their lunch bento box specials which was a pretty standard price, accompanied with a Tsunami roll. It's pretty difficult to make a bad bento box, considering how simple and classic the dish is. To my surprise, the server presented me with my dish within five minutes; for 15$ the roll was actually quite filling! The bento box overall tasted decent and came with miso soup, garden salad, 6 pieces of the California roll, and 4 pieces of nigiri. Midway into my meal I noticed that the fish used was not so fresh-- a huge chunk of my tuna nigiri contained gray discoloration, and the slices were pretty cheaply and thinly cut. Once again, Osaka left me disappointed. Unfortunately, Osaka doesn't stand out compared to its competitors, you can always find other places in the Twin Cities that offer you fresher, bigger cuts of sashimi/nigiri for a lot cheaper. Hibachi here was pretty good! We had coupons for chicken steak and shrimp. You get so much food! You start out with a broth soup, salad, then fried rice, noodles, and the proteins. They also have a regular dine in option, and bad. Be prepared to be annoyed with the gong and happy birthday song, and the giant mask they have you put on if it is your birthday. I loved the food. but the floors everywhere are so sticky! Kind of bothersome. I've been waiting for a good (or any) sushi place on the East Side for sometime now, and Osaka delivers, for the most part. They have a lunch all-you-can-eat sushi buffet for an extremely reasonable price, and they also serve many other warm foods besides just sushi. They had steamed crayfish, battered and fried frog legs, and some more of the basic traditional Asian buffet foods like fried rice, sweet and sour soup, and beef/chicken and broccoli stir fry. I do have to say that their food quality is only slightly above average. Yes, you can find better tasting sushi and sashimi, better spare ribs, or better fried wings, but this place's price, service, selection and convenience are 2nd to none. read more

GROUPON GRAVEYARD ALERT!!!!!!! I am not a huge fan of the Osaka chain but I got a killer Groupon deal one day, $16 for $40 and the kid likes its so I thought, what the heck...WRONG!! By this time, I am beginning to think I should have picked a better place to break bread with the kid for the first time since dropping her at the dorms a month ago. The spicy tuna roll was terrible to me, Ci ate it but I did not like it. The best part was the Wasabi and fresh ginger. I choked down one piece. I thought the rice tasted old on the sushi. The only thing he was competent at was starting fires. He really got into creating high flames. The kids at the table liked it, especially the boys but the rest of us were somewhat fearful. The Chef was so terrible he even asked the 7 year old boy what he ordered and the little boy said "Chicken" and the chef argued with him and said no, you ordered steak...Really asshole?!!!! You are going to argue with a 7 year old???? Lucky that wasn't my kid or I would have given him the nastiest MOM glare he ever saw!!! The fried rice and veggies were ok.....I ate them but I ordered scallops and they were not cooked well enough. I took one bite and never touched the rest. Ci thought they were fine but I did not. I think the worst part was when he put the scallops on my plate, he like scooped up some of the blood mix from the steaks, and put it on my plate like it was a sauce.... GAG!!!.....I HATE steak and I REALLY don't like the blood from steak anywhere near my food. Ci had ordered medium rare and he cooked all the steak the same degree of doneness.. ( Is that a word?)...Typically they keep each steak separate and cook each to the order but nope, not this guy, he cooked it all the same in one pile....The noodles looked so old and like they had been sitting in a colander for days-I immediately gave them to Ci. I could not wait to get out of there and felt sick for like five hours after. I insisted Ci throw the scallops away and not eat them.
