I love coming to Osaka-Ya during the summer time for their bento boxes, shave ice, and mochi. Today, I came specifically for their shave ice. The sizes are big and super affordable. I got an xsmall with mango syrup, green tea ice cream, mochi, and snow cap. The line was long was it moves quickly and you get your order quick too. For the snow cones, they accept cash only, no cards. There is a small little bench close to the ground next the bushes outside where you can sit and wait, and enjoy your snow cone. My boyfriend got mochis and he enjoyed them. I like their butter mochi here a lot but it is only available on Saturdays. They also have a sandwich shop attached which I've yet to try.

A hole in the wall, tiny spot that has so many Asian snacks, food, and other items. The woman working was super friendly and sweet, and we loved talking to her. I love me a salmon onigiri and will probably almost always get one when I see it. The ones from here are pretty solid, but not the best I've had (granted, I ate one everyday when I was in Japan). I came here after having lunch, so I was already pretty full. I would love to come back and try some of their other snacks!

Spring is almost here and this is my favorite place for shave ice! I like to ask for the simple syrup (no color), green tea powder, and for them to keep it "fluffy" and NOT pack down the ice. They also have incredible mochi. The traditional is with bean paste inside, but my favorite is with the peanut butter filling. (They also have fruit flavor mochi without filling.) They also have a small selection of popular Japanese snacks and food items.

Parking is tricky here. I'm not aware of a private lot so it's all street parking and during high times it's hard to find a space. My husband was determined to go in so he doubled parked leaving me in the car. That made me so nervous. I wish he just went around the block and found a space. And he wasn't in and out in a flash like he had hoped. There was a line inside the tiny shop. We aren't one of those people that plan ahead for New Years Day. So we didn't do a pre order of their soup mochi. We are the ones that shop on New Years Eve hoping that they made a little extra for us not planners. We lucked out. They had a whole box of Mochi that wasn't spoken for. They also had a ton of Mochi that people had planned ahead and preordered. We made out with some soup savory mochi and some rice crackers. I love the savory mochi toasted on the stove and dipped in soy sauce. I recommend. You plan ahead and order your New Years Mochi in advance so you aren't rushing to the store it see if there is any left.

What a great place to stop by for a quick dessert or even a quick lunch bite. Today I went to grab some mochi and some other Japanese goodies. The mochi reminds me of Turkish delights or dduk, but less chewy. Not better but different. I also liked that the mochi was very colorful and had different flavors like blue raspberry which tasted very blue and slightly raspberry. Lolz. The red bean cakes were not as dense as I expected which is what I like. Overall it was very light and even flakey. And it wasn't overly sugary. There's lots store is very small and packed with different decorations. Vibe feels very family own/moms and pops. And my friends noticed their awards/accomplishments. There's lots of other confectionery so I'll definitely come back. When we first arrived there was no line but after me and my friends were done there was quite a queue that built up out of nowhere! Smokin!! Solid A

This place is a small, hole in the wall shop. The person at the counter was not at all friendly which sucked because it was my first time there. You must carry small sums of cash because they couldn't break $50 bill so I had to pay with a card and they charged me the 4% service fee. BUT, I came here for the mochi and this place is top notch. I was super ecstatic when I heard they had chocolate peanut butter mochi!! Chocolate and peanut butter are my favorite combination duo ever. The mochi was so soft, almost pillowy, with a tender, stretchy pull to reveal the inside velvety chocolate. Heavenly!

This has been a neighborhood staple in downtown/midtown. Been here before for shave ice and mochis. Our last visit we got several kinds of mochi. Some with powder, some flavored, and some filled. As in past visits, they were all good. Like all goods now, they are pricier than before. It's really a small shop, no seating inside. For a small business, they prefer their patrons to pay in cash. When you pay credit, there is a fee. This will always be a go to place for me and can't wait for shave ice season for a kintoki (shave ice with red beans). Only wish is for longer hours but it is okay as long as they don't close for good.

I dropped by Osaka-Ya in search for a small asian treat before hitting the road and unexpectedly left with a snow cone along with a few mochis to try. I started by checking out the inside of the store and it felt kind of empty however I imagine that these are one of those small shops that only make and buy just enough product to sell. The vibe of it reminded me of those small musubi shops in Hawaii -- a small modest gem tucked away for explorers to find. I usually don't get snow cones, but felt compelled to get one considering it was almost 100 degrees outside. I got an XS Snow Cone with Tiger Blood Syrup (tasted a little like fruit punch) with condensed milk which was an add-on recommended by a woman who was ordering ahead of me. The Snow Cone came out to $6 which I thought was reasonable considering how big it was, big enough to share with my boyfriend. We thought it was good, not too sweet which is best for us - however I do wish they would've put a little bit more condensed milk as it didn't really stand out for my tastebuds much. As for the mochi, I grabbed 4 different ones to try which were all recommended by the cashier. So far, I've tried the raspberry mochi which was lovely. I realize I don't have much mochi tasting experience to compare it to anything so can't share much here but it was flavorful and pretty big in my opinion. I docked down a star as I feel like the inside of the store could probably use some air conditioning, it just as hot indoors as it was outdoors. This is only a mild concern since there was cooked food sitting out. I think it would make it a much more pleasant experience for customers during these hotter days and especially for the employees. Other than that, I did enjoy their treats and would recommend friends / fam to make a visit if they're looking to have a small inexpensive treat. (the family of 4 that was in line ahead of me shared an XL!)

Osaka Ya is still the best mochi in Sac (but I also love ABC Bakery red bean mochi, they are just a different type of mochi). The store is small but is teeming with so many delicious goodies. This has been a local favorite for a reason. I get the white red bean mochi, kinako (red bean as well as the cubes with no filling), peanut butter, and butter mochi when they have it available. They also have sushi and Inari lunch plates and onigiri sometimes. Best to call ahead if there are certain things you're looking for. Service is consistent and friendly. Street parking is available and never too hard to find. I highly recommend Osaka Ya.

I had known about their shaved ice but my daughter recently told me that they have the best peanut butter mochi. When I came to visit, I discovered it is a tri store. An area for ice cream and shaved ice. An area for mochi An area for meals. I got the butter mochi and 4 pre-boxed flat mochi - PB smooth, PB chunky, choco, choco PB, These were better than the bean stuff, so soft, and not too sweet. Then I stepped further into the store of Mecha Mucho and found tamago sando, I scored! And I also got a Japanese potato salad and a giant MM cookie - miso, sesame, salted chocolate chip. I know, so much starch...but so comforting to me. Will definitely come back for more treasures when in town.

Best snow cone.....ever!!!!!!!! - hidden gem that's been a neighborhood secret for generations..... gotta love the snow cone made by people that look like me years ago (younger Asian kids) - LOL. - had many flavors over the years, but i always go back to the "Tiger's Blood"- some say it have medicinal properties, i just think it taste good. -according to ancient Chinese secret, always tunnel your way through the base of the cone before the top collapse for good fortune..... VERDICT: offer a red snow cone to BUDDHA and be blessed with infinite wealth $$$$$$$......

The perfect spot if you're missing Japan (or have dreams to go one day and want to cosplay until then). Let me start by praising their mochi: the softest, most perfect mochi you will ever get in town. My favorite is the chocolate lover's, but the chocolate peanut butter is good too if that's more your flavor palate. They have tons of food inside as well (which I will be coming back for), but we focused on the ice-cold sweets to cool off on a hot day. Everyone was very nice and welcoming and answered any and all questions. Inside is the vibe of every family-owned, Asian, small business, food spot (which is a good sign). The mango fruit shake was everything you want: creamy, dense, and refreshing. I was worried the mango was going to taste artificial, but it was perfect! The fruit freeze was also very good and refreshing. Think Gunther's. The snow-cones definitely lived up to the hype. I would splurge and get both the condensed milk and the ice cream if the flavor you get pairs nicely with the upgrades. It was so good! With summer almost over, put this on your foodie hit list NOW!

This small business opened in 1963 and is one of the few Japanese Manju Shops in Nor Cal that makes them in shop! The box our family of 4 shared came with a variety of colorful mochi and manju! We enjoyed the fillings and sweet flavors! My eldest loved her Hawaiian Sun Strawberry Guava as well! I would definitely recommend this shop! You'll also find Osaka Shaved Ice(cash only) and the popular Mecha Mucho located inside! Which we stopped by for lunch! And of course, a variety of grab and go meal options, snacks, and drinks! Staff are great and there is outdoor seating available! We'll definitely be returning with empty stomachs! SYOY! :D *Song Credit: Peachy by Rizensun

I tried their sukiyaki set, both wagyu and seafood. I wish they had given some instructions on the approach or order I should eat the sets of food. It was a little chaotic trying to figure out how I could submerge all the ingredients in the broth so they would cook evenly. The tempura is perfectly crispy, but the rice was a little brittle and got dried really fast. The texture was more like Vietnamese broken rice, and it caught me off guard because when I tried their sushi a while ago, they used very high-quality rice. As is typical with sukiyaki, the broth becomes very flavorful at the end, absorbing all the flavors from high-quality ingredients, but my udon got a little dry while waiting. Since I tried both set, the wagyu sukiyaki broth became a little too sweet at the end. My favorite is definitely the seafood sukiyaki broth. Would I try these pricy sukiyaki again? Probably not. Would I go back to Azayaka again? 100%. This would not discourage me from going back there any amount.

Came here for dinner a couple of times, the first time I ordered the rainbow roll ($15) which is my barometer for sushi at restaurants. Decently sized, the fish was fresh and the roll was filling. Daughter ordered the ramen ($18) with the red option, which she enjoyed with the plethora of toppings. Dinner the second time, I got the teishoku set with salmon ($21). Two decently filets of salmon came with rice, miso soup, salad, deep fried egg roll and salad. You also get a choice of either croquette or chawanmushi. The chawanmushi was a highlight for me! I missed eating this savory custard when I used to live in Japan. Their version did not disappoint! This has spot has become a rotating staple for me and am looking forward to trying out more of their sushi rolls.

*** Vegetarian Review ***…read more Would I come back? Yes, friendly service. They can accommodate their broths for vegetarians. If you can handle it, always ask for a medium spice level. Tips for first-timers: 1) Plenty of free parking 2) They accept reservations The Food: Vegetable Tempura ($18.95, Grade A): I like how they cut the vegetables--not too chunky. There is nothing worse than a chunky carrot that isn't cooked to its core. The tempura batter doesn't pull off when you bite into it, and it isn't oily at all. Yasai Ramen ($17.95, Grade A): Asked for a water broth to make this safe and vegetarian-friendly. You would think it would be tasteless, but it was surprisingly packed with flavor. The medium spice level definitely helped, but even for people sensitive to heat, this would be a tasty dish. It says water-based, but it still has a deep, eye-appealing dark color. The noodles have a great bite. Not overly mushy. And they stay that way for the entire meal. Broccoli, zucchini, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms, and cabbage. The cubed tofu is fresh and wasn't spoiled which often happens with tofu in restaurants that a lot of people don't order daily. Jungle Roll ($14.95, Grade A): Avocado and cucumber, topped with a seaweed salad. Most Japanese restaurants fail to understand that vegetarians also want a fun roll! We asked if they could include a vegetable tempura inside the roll so there would be a good textural component, and added a drizzle of teriyaki and spicy mayo. Good news--they were able to do it, though having to check with the sushi bar is always an adventure ($1 extra for each request). Sidenote: Why do all Japanese restaurants need to ask the sushi bar? One-hundred percent of the time, we eagerly have to wait for the sushi court to give a "rolling." (Ruling if that was too vague). The rolls are made fresh and many meat-based rolls include a tempura element rolled inside. I could understand if we're asking to deep fry the roll, but just adding a tempura and a drizzled sauce? Ok, hopping off my soapbox. Bottom Line We've been coming to this place on and off for over ten years. It's been at least 2 years since our last visit, and there are some noticeable changes. Portions are smaller; the ramen bowls used to be the size of a food challenge. The restaurant itself is looking older and not quite as cared for, but the flavors remain excellent and the friendly, attentive service is completely unchanged.

My friend watched the waitress stack the 5 trays and left to process payment. Waitress returned and told them she was missing one payment. The party insisted that they all paid. The manager came to the table and told them they had to pay before they leave. Again, the party insisted they all paid. One of the ladies asked,"Are you saying that we're lying? There's security cameras in this room. Go review the footage and you can see the proof that we all paid and the waitress took the trays." Apparently the security cameras weren't functioning as he wouldn't look at the footage. The manager wanted to charge the missing payment to the person who used a charge card for her payment and the group told him that was not acceptable. The dispute went on for 30 minutes and customers at a near by table kept turning around and looking at us. The manager stepped away again and returned shortly with the missing payment saying that he found it under the cash register! There was no true apology, no effort to compensate the group for the embarrassing behavior and accusations. Clearly it was the waitress' mistake and she didn't apologize to the group. This is unacceptable behavior from the manager. Knowing this happened yesterday, I will no longer dine at Akebono. Very poor customer service.

It's the kind of place that quietly becomes your favorite before you've even finished your first dish. ‍ Service That Feels Like Home From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm, enthusiastic "Irrashaimase!" The hostess was exceptionally engaging--personable without being overbearing--and guided us through the sake menu like a seasoned sommelier of umami. Her thoughtful recommendations led us to a beautiful tasting journey featuring three types of sake: * A classic hot sake for comfort, * A crisp cold sake imported from Japan, and * A smooth and unexpected bottle from Vernon, CA (yes, Vernon--who knew?). Although the tall glasses were emblazoned with Orion Beer branding, we stuck to the sake. No regrets. What We Ate -- A Love Letter to Flavor Every dish was visually stunning and bursting with freshness. Here's what we devoured: * Truffle Hamachi Carpaccio: Thin slices of hamachi bathed in a rich truffle soy, topped with microgreens and salmon roe. Silky, aromatic, and sublime. * Shishito Peppers: Perfectly blistered and dusted with spice. A simple dish that delivered big on smoky flavor. * Sake Nigiri & Tobiko Gunkan: The sake (salmon) nigiri was melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and the tobiko gunkan had just the right briny pop. Clean, classic, perfect. * Negihama Roll: Yellowtail and scallion in delicate harmony--refreshing and elegant. * Spicy Tuna Roll: A fiery flavor bomb, dusted generously with shichimi. Spicy but well-balanced. * Jade Roll: Wrapped in seaweed salad and sesame, this one was fresh, crunchy, and full of herbaceous notes. A standout roll. * Cucumber Sunomono: A palate cleanser and a beautiful contrast to the richness of the fish. Light, crunchy, and seasoned just right with sesame. Ambiance Kumi Sushi's atmosphere is refined but intimate--dim lighting, soft jazz playing in the background, and warm wood tones throughout. It's got date-night vibes without trying too hard. Final Verdict Kumi Sushi is everything you want in a neighborhood sushi spot--just elevated. Thoughtful service, stunning presentation, fresh ingredients, and a sake list that deserves its own night. Whether you're a seasoned sushi snob or just looking for a delicious evening out, this place delivers. 11/10 would truffle hamachi myself into oblivion again. Highly recommended.

It was nice that they had some vegan rolls that weren't just avocado rolls. My sister was happy to be able to order at one place with us. I'm not sure when the grand opening was, but the sign was still hanging up when we got there. The Uni pasta was good, but I wish I had it fresh. I think I would have loved it more. The rolls were decent and we had a little bit of variety. I always cautious going towards 29th St. because of the limited parking but was really happy that they had their own parking lot. I was also able to walk down to Pushkin as well. Inside the restaurant there wasn't an abundance of tables. I hope they get busy, because I think they previously took over this restaurant.

There is a designated parking lot across the street, so it's easy to grab a spot and walk over. Just be careful because the parking spots in the lot aren't well marked and it's easiest to just park neatly next to other cars. We like to sit at the bar if there's just two of us, and will grab a table when we have friends. If you want to make sure you have a table, you can make a reservation ahead of time, but we usually don't need to wait too long. Our favorites are the brussel sprouts, karaage chicken, and their nigiri. We also really enjoy the sukiyaki, it's really flavorful and perfect for cooler or rainy weather. We still need to come by for brunch, but we've heard good things. The team here is always friendly, and we've been in enough that some of them recognize us now.
