Everything was going well till I found a tiny hair in my food. A RUDE LADY (not Oscar) came by my table and said, "all my cooks wear hats, sometimes it can be your own hair." Another wonderful lunch at Oscar's Cafe. I arrived just past noon on Tuesday and as one would expect it was pretty busy. Generally, there are open seats at the bar which is great. Today they had a meatball sandwich as a special, I typically go with their chili and some fries, but I went with the special because I haven't had anything bad here and figured I would try something new. I wasn't disappointed it wasn't nearly as good as the chili but it was really good. Meatballs weren't dry or hard, they were pretty good and flavorful. Fries were good as usual. I haven't seen this on the regular menu so I don't know if it is a common item or not. Overall it is hard to go wrong when you are getting something to eat at Oscar's Cafe. read more

We were told this place was great for breakfast and the many reviews say the same. However, my experience was anything but. I don't typically leave negative reviews.... but a picture is worth a thousand words as they say. My hash browns were swimming in grease and my corned beef hash was burnt. I really enjoyed Breakfast at Oscar's. When you walk in, you kind of go trough a time warp back to a classic diner. We were a party of 2, and were seated at the counter, which I loved! I like to watch all the action. Our waitress was super friendly and despite it being packed our food came pretty quickly. It was fresh off the grill and hot when it arrived. I ordered the bacon and eggs and my husband ordered pancakes - that were bigger than his head, and his head is not tiny. My coffee was never empty and the food was delicious. We are here on vacation, so sadly I won't be able to frequent this place but I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town! read more

A must when you visit Durango. Small, homey, picturesque. They are open for breakfast and lunch. Great customer service, everyone is friendly and helpful. We had the Farmer's Breakfast, the Verde Breakfast and Apple Pie. Both very tasty with just enough spice. Their food has a home cooked appeal, especially their pies. Wow! This place is wonderful! I'm not much of a breakfast food person, but I could eat here every morning! I forgot to take a picture of our main food, but my parents both had the special of the day, the western Benedict. It came with 2 biscuits and gravy, 2 sausage patties, eggs of your choosing, and amazing hashbrowns. For me, I had the oscar Ole omelet, and added sausage. It came with a big side of hashbrowns. Spoiler Alert: Fairy Tale Ending.* I could eat here every day. I did eat here every day. Four mornings in Durango were begun in the delightful company of the excellent waitstaff at Oscar's, enjoying the delicious offerings of this charming Mountainous Choo-choo themed diner, with three of those mornings hearty breakfasts prepared by, Paula, who must be, IM(not so)HO, not only one of Durango's Greatest at the Griddle but a truly fine person of exceptional lineage as well. Day One: Began my love affair with Oscar's Chile Verde. Thick chunky not-too spicy with plenty of cumin, it's an excellent version that stole the spotlight from expertly prepared cooked well done (as requested) corned beef hash with it's picture perfect crusty griddled goodness, it being brought to another level with the kick of the squeeze bottled, smooth, house made, red chile sauce. Day Two: One (is enough) banahna pancake, well done (as requested) bacon and link sausages. YUM!! Nuff said. Day Three: Special order omelet w/ well done (as requested) ham, onion and tomahto w/ fresh spinach and cheddar cheese, appropriately dubbed, "The Big A$$ Omelet". At first appeared challenging but I shifted into low and marveled at the ease with which my appetite handled what at first appeared daunting. Also, chile verde. Had to confirm it's greatness. Confirmed. Met Paula: Wonderful Woman (even without her spatula), she promised to hook me up with a frozen portion of her chile verde for those back home holding down the Castle. Day Four: Sunnyside ups and a perfectly fine biscuit and gravy w/ sausage patties, that could have only been better, IM(not so)HO, with some sage, thyme or other fine herb, were left unfinished leaving room for pie. Not just any pie but in-house made banahna pie from the show case that had been calling my name from day one. Exquisitely embellished w/ fresh banahna and whipped cream, a flaky crust with a firm filling, it ranks with the best. Having completed my task in Durango, which had nothing to do w/ Oscar's, and with frozen chile verde in hand along w/ a personal note from Paula (who was hopefully enjoying a well deserved break that morning) I left Durango feeling re-invigorated, emotionally healed and blessed, partially, as it turns out, because of those four mornings among Durango's finest with every request and expectation cheerfully not just met but exceeded. *Cuz not every story has one. read more

This place has everything going for it. Great food, great service, and great owners. The new owners took over two weeks ago and I overheard one of them say to a server when asked how she should handle a situation, "you've been here longer than I have, what do you think we should do?" We don't get out for big breakfasts all that much these days. But we do love Mexican and Southwestern breakfast, and consider this big surprise: We can't get that stuff back where we now live, in Cincinnati, Ohio. So after investigating the Durango breakfast options, we cast our lot with Oscar's, which, in addition to offering the usual diner breakfast fare, had some green chile and other regional options. There is much to like about Oscar's: It's got the cramped, bustling, convivial atmosphere you want in a diner experience. Although Oscar's is located in a strip shopping center that looks only a couple or three decades old, the cluttered interior feels straight out of the Fifties. It feels lived-in and comforting and authentic. So far so good. With our food on this day is where the problems lay. Our green chile items--the Verde Breakfast and Southwest Breakfast Burro--were hearty and served in generous portions. But the chili verde seemed way, way oversalted, so much so that it overwhelmed the green chile flavor. And so much so as to be somewhat stomach-upsetting. I say this as somebody who is not afraid of salt in my food. So please tone down the sodium chloride, Oscar. I should also say that the hashbrowns in my Verde Breakfast seemed a notch or two undercooked. It's possible that other breakfast items on the menu knock it out of the park and/or that we showed up on a bad day for the kitchen. Because the consensus disagrees with me, take my review with a grain of salt. read more

Busy busy busy! We lucked out and managed to get a table almost right away, but it was otherwise packed the entire time. The dining area is pretty crammed (we were at a table near the back and people kept squeezing past to use the restroom). I had the french toast special, which came with two pieces of toast, sausage, and eggs. I barely made it through. The french toast has an unusual crunchy coating but was very good. While the food was good, the service was so terrible that I felt like we had done or said something offensive. Our server was friendly to everyone else (who seemed like locals), but specifically was rude to us. When we started ordering breakfast, she immediately stated, "Breakfast is over," instead of a more polite, "Sorry, breakfast ended at..." Then as we were ordering, she yawned not once, but TWICE. It was so strange, because we hadn't done or said anything that could be construed as rude. Not once did we have her return to the table to fill up our coffee mugs or waters, only to silently drop off food. And she didn't give us any forks and knives. We literally ate our meal with spoons. My partner thought maybe she was having a really off day, but she was wonderfully friendly with everyone else in the diner. Food can be delicious, but if served with a crappy attitude, it's just not worth it. If you look like an out of towner, are LGBTQ+, a non-white person, or disabled, (as a family we presented as any one of those categories!), then avoid Oscar's. We don't know what it was that triggered the terrible service, but it must have been one of those categories. read more

Unassuming little diner located in the center of Durango, I will caution that the seats are sort of small, which isn't really a downside per se, just an item of note. The Chicken chef salad I had was excellent, it was a huge portion, I really enjoyed it. My mom got the green chili burger which she said was good. My brother got the rueben which he said was great. Fast friendly service, excellent service. You could really tell the employees genuinely care that you had a great visit, bravo! The menu offers a good variety of breakfast items. The four of us opted for a variety of dishes. Here is the breakdown: Mex Brex - a golden hash brown pancake with green chilies, cheeses, crowned with two eggs, salsa, and sour cream. Well made and delicious! Biscuits And Gravy - Country style sausage gravy that we make from scratch and ladle over 2 home style biscuits. Smothered and covered! Through The Woods - Sauteed mushrooms with melted cheese in one fluffy omelet. Big plate of food. Well executed. Oscar's Olé - A south of the border wonder - diced green chilies, cheddar and jack topped with sour cream and salsa. Be sure to mix the salsa and the sour cream together. Enjoy! read more

Decent diner. Very fast service, but almost too fast. You can tell the services want to turn and burn their tables, which is fine, but a bit annoying if you're trying to have a leisurely breakfast. I had the verde breakfast, which was essentially a bowl of potatoes topped with green chili, like an overwhelming amount, with two basted eggs and a tortilla. The portion was huge, but the flavor was lackluster. The spice from the green chili was nice, but I had to add a bunch of salt. The green glop of chili overpowered any taste the hashbrowns and eggs may have had. I'd maybe return, but would for sure order something else and would make sure it was to dine quickly. read more

Nice looking menu and my girlfriend really liked her food, but my experience was utterly inexcusable. I asked for a vegetarian recommendation and the waitress suggested a breakfast burrito without sausage. Service was very slow even though there were only 3 tables with customers. When our food arrived and I started eating my burrito, it had sausage and it had green chili (with pork). When I showed her she was ambivalent and didn't apologize. We had been there so long I didn't bother getting anything else, and just asked for the check. I was billed for the burrito. It took 10+ minutes to get it removed from the bill. My husband and I have gone to Oscar's whenever we are in Durango and we love the food. The service, for the most part, has been exceptional. Our last trip was a little disappointing. The food was great as always but our server could have been more on the ball. We ordered our breakfast and asked for a cinnamon roll to go. The cinnamon rolls are the size of a small dinner plate and delicious. Our food came scattered. I had ordered one egg and half an order of french toast and my husband ordered an omelette. My husband received his order and mine didn't come. 4 or 5 minutes later, I got my egg. 4 or 5 minutes later the french toast showed up. While we were eating, the waitress came to the table with the cinnamon roll in a plastic grocery bag with the top twisted together and dropped it on our table. Can you guess why we wouldn't want a large frosted cinnamon roll in a twisted up grocery bag? Does anyone want to scrape the frosting off of the inside of a questionable grocery bag and put it back on the cinnamon roll and eat it? The waitress put the roll in the bag in the restaurant and we were eating outside. Was it a new bag? Was it clean? There was no way for us to know. After she dropped the bag on the table, she disappeared, When she finally returned, I said the cinnamon roll in the bag was unacceptable. She grabbed the bag and disappeared saying she would take it off the check. She did NOT ask if we wanted a new cinnamon roll or offer us alternatives. Every other take out container we saw leave the restaurant was a BOX! We had to request a BOX with a cinnamon roll when we paid to leave, Common sense would tell anyone that a frosted item should not be twisted up in bag. This was a prime example of how critical thinking is no longer being taught in schools. read more

Honestly...this has to be the best Green Chile in Colorado. I won't speak for New Mexico (it's just not fair), but this is some darn good chile. Every time I come in, the decision between hashbrowns smothered in green chile or pancakes almost brings me to tears. lol.. Also, they have PIE. How wonderful is that?! And of course, first timers always admire the cute decorations and little train circling the restaurant. Decor is on point.
