I'm writing this review about 7-8 years after purchasing an engagement ring. I'll start off by saying the gentleman who helped me did a fantastic job helping me choose the perfect ring & diamond. My wife loves it til this day. I'm only giving this a 3 star because after popping the question, our agreement was that I would go in with my new fiancée to get her finger measured for a resize. The woman who helped wasn't as attentive and was almost brushing us off. She took my fiancées finger size just to appease us. They kept the ring for days only to have the same exact loose ring returned. It wasn't resized. Other than that, from the gentleman it was great service and beautiful ring. read more

We were shopping for my wedding band and just trying engagement rings on for fun for my friend. We first went to another shop in the Jewelry Building but we weren't super satisfied. Luckily we found OSCARS on the 7th floor by luck! We were helped by Melissa who is hands down, a mind reader. I showed her an example of what wedding band I wanted, and she pulled something similar but even BETTER than what I had saved on etsy! She told me they could customize the band to fit around my diamond and make it a little bigger. It was PERFECT as it was very dainty. Then my friend showed her what she wanted for her engagement ring and AGAIN melissa was able to find EXACTLY what she was looking for, and told us they could create the setting from scratch and she was able to customize her basket too! She was super helpful and creative. We had SO much fun creating my friend's custom ring! We also met Ruth while we were waiting. She was so funny and hilarious. Definitely a joy to be around. This review is long overdue since I coerced my fiancé back in April 2012. 8 months and the engagement is still on :P I have checked out the trifecta -- korean, jewish, middle eastern -- with primarily price in mind. However, after visiting Oscar I came to the realization quality and my relationship with the jeweler would become the overriding factors. Salute to him for no hard sale or up-sell...or maybe it was the stench of desperation from my then gf's approaching deadline. I shopped around JD for about 2 weeks but found my experience with Oscar, and team (Melissa -- sales associate, Jean-Claude -- designer) was easy going, informative and thorough. I typically don't like attention but it was reassuring to know they all took a vested interest in my once...maybe twice (she'll file) in a lifetime decision. They also took the time to call after my proposal to followup and ask how everything went. Very kind people. Please note, there are only a couple people available to help and he does get busy so I highly suggest weekday mornings for optimum level of service. They offer loose diamonds (GIA, EGL and non-certified) and can design exactly what you have in mind. Bring examples of printouts and he'll make it happen. I rarely give 5 stars, but I felt especially inclined to give Oscar 5 stars. I believe Oscar been in the business for, what, 18 years? He knows stones, he knows the jewelry market/business, and he knows he wants repeat customers by doing business that make his customers happy. There are a SIGNIFICANT number of jewelers in the downtown jewelry district, but I think you'll find that Oscar's is typically almost always busy. Why? Good, honest business generates repeat customers and referrals. I always have a pretty good sense of a person's character/integrity, and I really truly think Oscar is a one-of a kind jeweler. He knows that many of his customers come here for very special purchases and they are spending their hard-earned money, and he respects that. I haven't dealt with many high-end jewelers in my life, but you can pretty much guarantee I expect to have a long-term business-type relationship with Oscar (fortunate for him, unfortunate for my budget!), because of a previous purchase. I've been holding off on writing this review because I've been waiting for my bf (now fiancé :P) to propose to me with the ring I picked out with Oscar and Melissa. Oscar, Melissa, and Ruth all helped me throughout my engagement ring choosing process and they were nothing short of amazing! I went shopping with a girlfriend who was shopping for her wedding band and we were also going to try on some ring settings for me. We went first to another jeweler in the same building first but was a little unsatisfied with the choices they had, we quickly yelped something else in the vicinity and saw the great reviews on yelp and decided to give Oscar's a shot and Boy were we glad we did! Upon first going into oscars, oscar's and the whole team showed us great hospitality despite not having an appointment and being quite busy. We showed Melissa the setting look I was going for and she immediately had a band in mind, the band was just a band but she assured us that it could be made into a setting so then Melissa helped us choose the MOST perfect cage to go with the band and I was in LOVE! After choosing everything, my girlfriend also picking out the wedding band of her dreams with the help of Melissa as well. We both left satisfied and happy with our experience and with reasonable/fair price point that Oscar quoted. Fast forward, a few months my fiancé was ready to make the ring purchase but he was missing the diamond. Oscar and team was again so helpful in helping us choose a diamond within the specs I wanted and price range of my fiancé. He never once pushed anything on us and even offered us snacks and tacos throughout the process. He also let us stay for over 2 hours deciding on the diamond (I am innately indecisive). I don't know how anyone could give Oscar's place less than 5 stars!!!! this is as good as it gets. Oscar is such a cool man! super nice and just so genuine! The other workers there are very sweet as well. I just don't know what to say, the service is awesome, the quality is amazing, and that's pretty much all that matters. Oscar and his team did an amazing job on my ring. My fiance knew that I wanted a princess cut diamond. he took that and ran with it! I almost had a heart attack when he proposed and I saw my ring. It was a princess cut with a cushion halo and a pave band. I don't even know if I'm using the correct words to describe my ring. I don't know ring language so get over it. I never thought I would get a halo on my ring yet alone the pave band because my fiance is very cheap and shiesty. He becomes snow white's grumpy dwarf whenever he needs to pull out his wallet so I was just blown away when I saw my ring. Just everything about it, the cut, color, clarity. design, and not to mention the size. I get compliments on my ring aaaaallll the time when I'm out and I feel so lucky! It seems like most people like the classic round cut but a lot of the compliments I receive start off with "you know I thought I didn't really like the square/princess cut diamonds, but I'm looking at yours and it's reaaaaally pretty." I get so many compliments, and people always say "your fiance did a great job." My fiance did a WONDERFUL job. no doubt about that. however!!!!!!! I bought my engagement ring from Oscar. Oscar was fantastic -- he is a true craftsman who came up with a beautiful design and implemented it flawlessly, and my fiancee loved the ring he made for her. I knew nothing about engagement rings, but this was a hugely important purchase. I went to about 15 different stores, and my fiancee liked Oscar's designs the best of all of the places we looked. We were both very comfortable with him, and he gave us some really useful information about options that other merchants simply hadn't provided (ask him about platinum versus gold rings, for example). Here is a list of the pros and cons I took away from the experience: Cons: Oscar is really busy. He is extremely friendly about it, but expect to have to spend some time waiting for him while you are shopping for the ring. And in terms of delivery time, we weren't in a huge hurry to have the ring delivered, but it did take him 3 weeks to make the ring. That said, he knew we weren't in a huge hurry, and he estimated 4 weeks, so he delivered in under his estimate. Communication: Oscar doesn't immediately return emails. He did always eventually return the emails, and you can always call, but he isn't a blackberry instant responder type. On the other hand, do you really need this in a jewelry designer? Pros: Craftsmanship: The ring he made was amazing. You can look at the workmanship under a microscope. He has a background as a purchaser of diamonds, so he gets amazing stones, and he does extremely high quality work with the ring. The one part he doesn't do himself is the small diamonds around the band, but he has a particular craftsman he uses in San Diego who does an amazing job with those stones (micro pave). Integrity: You can tell that Oscar values his reputation much more than he values a sale. He is honest and straightforward in his interactions, and gives you the truth regardless of how it might impact a sale or his profit margin. Experience/Knowledge: One thing that drove me nuts when we were looking for rings was everyone telling me that platinum was more expensive than gold. I couldn't understand why, since the metals are the same price now. Oscar was the only one who could explain why (there is much more platinum by weight in a platinum ring than in a gold ring of the same size). Between his comprehensive knowledge of diamonds and jewelry, you could just see the years of experience, and you were comfortable that you were in good hands. Professionalism: Oscar delivers what he promises. He goes out of his way to make sure you are satisfied. He knew I wanted the ring a bit early in order to propose the next weekend. He arranged to have it shipped back from the artisan who does the micro pave overnight. When we went to pick up the ring, my fiancees hands were a bit swollen, and Oscar and his staff stayed late to make sure the ring would fit comfortably and that we could take it with us that day. read more

My partner and I went to Oscar's Design Jewelry to pick out rings after reading some of the reviews on Yelp. Oscar's exceeded our expectations and we would go back in a heartbeat. As some reviews note, Oscar's is on the 7th floor of a building in the Jewelry District, so it's not a place you will walk by unless you know to look for it. There are several jewelers on the 7th floor and Oscar's is easy to find once you're up there. I hope I'm remembering her name correctly, but Melissa was awesome. The last place we checked-out was Tiffany's in Pasadena and the experience was like night and day. Melissa was warm, inviting, patient, thorough, and knowledgeable, all without being pushy. When she asked who the rings were for and we explained they were for us, she didn't skip a beat. Above all, she focused on helping us find the right rings and let the rest fall into place. The selection of men's rings is fantastic and you can customize rings pretty much any way you can think of -- anything from flashy fashion rings to more traditional wedding bands to jeweled men's rings. I recently got my engagement ring here. Spent over 4 months of research and found this cool place. The staff here is not pushy at all. I met Oscar, the owner, and he was just so laid back. I gave him my budget and what I want in a diamond. And he met my expectation. He gave me a good deal on the diamond too. Ask him and he would give you a brief education on diamonds. I proposed to my wife with a very unique, antique (from the 1900s) white gold diamond ring with a delicate filigree pattern on the sides. She wanted a really thin band created with a similar pattern, but it proved difficult to find a wedding band without diamonds . We weren't really sure of how to go about buying our wedding bands, weren't sure about the jewelry district, who's legit, who isn't, pricing, pressure, etc., but we found Oscar on Yelp and went to visit him based on the astonishing amount of five-star reviews. He and the staff were very welcoming and warm from the start. It didn't matter to them that we weren't looking to spend thousands of dollars on rings, they treated us with attention and courtesy every time we visited. Oscar is a genuinely kind and gentle man and a pleasure to work with. We finally placed an order, as Oscar agreed to have a wedding band handmade to my wife's specifications, although he did explain that the width of the ring would need to be a little wider in order to create the pattern that she desired. A few days later, we went to pick-up her band. Oscar presented us with it and said he wasn't sure if she'd love it, and honestly, it was a little different than what she wanted and she was a little unsure how to say this, since he'd put so much work into it. He was very understanding and suggested to us that he have his engraver try again. We were happy that he offered without her even admitting that she wasn't completely happy. Then she went back a few days later and he made her TWO options - it was really going above and beyond for customer service. She LOVED the new band he had designed - it was exactly what she was looking for to pair with the engagement ring. He knew what she wanted and went out of his way to get it right. She couldn't be happier, and the work and craftsmanship are beautiful. I also got my much-more-plain white gold wedding band from Oscar, as he's the only person I found who understood the exact bevel and subtle finish that I wanted on my ring. Again, he knew how to help me get exactly what I wanted, within a very small tolerance of my personal preference. That's skill. OSCAR IS GREAT! We highly recommend him and will be going back to him in the future. He and his entire staff were complete professionals, yet they were relaxed and honest and never pressured us the way that many jewelers in the LA downtown Jewelry District might. Okay I agree that the owner is the nicest guy and really laid back, but our experience here wasn't that great. Probably because it was a busy saturday. BIG TIP: do not go to the jewelry district on saturdays... that's their busiest day of the week and they have a lot of additional hired hands helping. Some who really shouldn't be doing sales. If you go on a week day you will have a totally unrushed, calm experience with a salesperson who can actually spend time with you. We had this really push guy with a thick russian accent that just kept pestering us with to look at diamonds when all we wanted was to look at ring settings. "How much do you want to spend?" When it came time for my husband to pop the question, he headed downtown in search for the perfect ring for me. He search high and low for a particular cut of diamond which can be hard to come by. He went to several stores and lo and behold he found it at Oscar's. Oscar pulled out the stone from his personal collection and educated the hubby on the four C's of the business. Since Joe had been running around the diamond district for a good part of the day, Oscar kindly treated him to free lunch while waiting on the ring. Oscar and his staff didn't try to swindle my husband and gave him great customer service. With that being said, I went with Joe back to Oscar's in search of my wedding band. One of the store associates assisted us. She listened to the type of ring I was looking for and gave her feminine input on what would pair nicely with my engagement ring. We made our purchase in under an hour. But when we got home my husband saw the 10% discount on Yelp and immediately called Oscar's about it. Even after purchase, they kindly added the discount. My fiance and I actually stumbled upon Oscar's by chance-we arrived early for an appointment at another store downstairs, so we decided to explore the rest of the building. Thank goodness we found Oscar's! The second we walked in, everyone was so welcoming and helpful, and the jewelry is just beautiful and of great quality. I felt that they truly wanted to help me find "the ring", instead of just trying to make a sale. There are no high-pressure sales tactics here at all, which is rare downtown. They truly let the quality of the jewelry sell itself. And if you just can't find that perfect piece...they will design it for you! Which is what we decided to do. I gave Oscar an idea of what I wanted, he added his creative input, and after exchanging emails (including photos of the wax mold and computer images of the to-be ring) and tweaking things here and there, they created a truly beautiful ring! We didn't have a huge budget; they will definitely work with you to give you the best for what you can afford. I absolutely recommend Oscar's not just for engagement/wedding rings but for any other jewelry. We ended up also getting my wedding band here, and that is just gorgeous as well. I came here a second time after I purchased my wife's engagement ring. This time, I bought my wedding band. I give Oscar five star for his patience, demeanor, and attitude. I'm not much of a shopper, but my wife IS. I can say that we looked all over downtown for 1) quality engagement rings, 2) fair to good prices, 3) good service and quality support. I have to say that Oscar's has all three aspects down to a science. When we were shopping for a ring, we compared his rings to Tiffany's. Most of the similar rings at the same price range were of significant lower quality. When you compare price to price, you will typically find lower quality diamonds or craftmanship, or lesser service. When we came in a second time to purchase my wedding band, Oscar polished and cleaned the engagement ring to a new shine so the ring looked bigger and brighter for the wedding. I recently was in the market for an engagement ring purchase. I went to a couple of stores and visited Oscar's twice. I came to a decision about which ring I wanted, and it was one of Oscar's designs. So I called him ahead of time to be sure he'd be available. He said he would be. I went in at the appointed time. Then I proceeded to sit there while he talked to someone else and ignored me. After 45 minutes I got up and walked out. I never went back, he lost a very large sale, and he gets a 1/5 of Yelp. Trust me...he deserves it. I've never been treated so poorly in my life, let alone when I was about to spend $25K. I've been meaning to write this for a little while. Oscar was amazing - I had done some decent research before going in to buy an engagement ring, but wasn't sure exactly what I wanted. After sitting with me, showing me a variety of rings, and talking about it, Oscar decided he knew what I wanted, explained it to me, and proceeded to make a completely custom design that turned out perfect. He gave me a great deal on it too - I had a friend that works for a gemologist, and was able to tell me what a ring like that should run, and he was right on target. When it was time to get our wedding bands, we went back to Oscar. He designed a band for her to perfectly match the engagement ring. And for me, I was a little indecisive - but even though I called a week later and he was already pretty much done with it, he very graciously agreed to tweak the design to be more like what I wanted.
