I had high hopes for this place but was very disappointed. My fiancé and I visited this winery as it was highly recommended by many of our friends and family. The wines were great, don't get me wrong. But the server, Adrian did not give us tasting menus (even after asking), he did not tell us what we were drinking, and gave absolutely no idea about the wines. Grounds were gorgeous. Matt, the winemaker was very nice and knowledgeable. We had about a 5 min convo with him, other than that it was a horrible experience. We visited initially in the beginning of March 2020, before CoVid, and had an amazing experience. We met John, had a few tastings and left as members. They had a few great wines - Carnal, Rojo del Patron and their Mouvedre (but sold out now). I want to join them for their next pick up party or burger outing but we will see when that will happen. We were able to bring some friends with us this month. They have safety precautions because of CoVid and though it was hot there was an amazing breeze! read more

Love the atmosphere and the wine but yesterday, the service was really poor. Met the owner who was GREAT and personable. Really cool that he spent the time. The guy who picked up where he left off was not engaged, no wine info and we finally just left. We wanted to buy wine, but he just did not take any time to do the tastings or promote. We never forgot the bottle of Oso Libre wine we tasted some 6 years ago at the LA County Fair. We can't remember the varietal or year, but we recall it was damn good! Fast forward to Monday 7/13/20, driving down the 46 and we see the Oso Libre banner and quickly decide to visit. We're not Paso newbies; we've been visiting Paso 2-3 times a year for 12 years and are members of several wineries that are along the East 46. Oddly, we have never even been to any of the wineries on the West 46, until that day. We had to call to make reservations since tasting rooms had recently reopened due to COVID. We called the winery and they were able to take us at our desired time. The drive to the winery was BEAUTIFUL!! Lots of curves and Oaks to enjoy along the drive!! We were seated outside (again due to COVID) and really admired the view of their valley and windmill. The vineyards, windmill and the Angus give the place a cool rustic touch. We're mostly red wine drinkers, and boy did they have great tasting reds!! Our favorites are the Por Vida, Quixotic, and the Rojo del Patron. Unfortunately, they were sold out of their reserve wines...but that's always been a good sign, so we're really looking forward to tasting these. Service was on point; Quintin was our server and did a great job keeping our glasses filled and talking about the wines and the winery. So after about an hour enjoying the view, wines, and service we decided to join the club! We also ended up purchasing 6 bottles to carry us over to the Fall shipment. Stumbled upon this one going up the hill, and also in search of puppy friendly tasting locations - and we're fortunate enough to find an outdoor patio and more where to tie up two of the dogs from our group. The hostess was friendly and even helped us over the phone when we confirmed the pups were okay to keep outside while tasting. Everyone was warm and friendly and it definitely was a nice location overlooking the hills, the ranch, trees and more. The tasting room we were in was also unique; my husband loved some of the unique and custom decor and collectible items. We did a couples tasting at about $15 each and although they were lightly poured, pretty good wines. A red and the rose stood out to us the most, although we had other stops during the day we decided against stocking up on bottles just yet. read more

We came here in June 2017 for their Angus Burgers & Wine Tasting. We didn't need to make reservations but were warned that they would sell out if we got there after 2pm. We arrived when they first opened at 12noon. We started tasting and then saw a swarm of people lined up to get in so we decided to get in line for our food and thank god we did. After we ordered we continued our tasting and about 30 minutes later our food came out. We sat down and over heard that they were already sold out by 1:00pm. The vineyard is very beautiful, the burgers were outstanding, the wine is delish, they are pet friendly, plus the staff were all super friendly, and knowledgeable! As a last minute add-on we came to this winery. What a gem!! Great wines, great service, great location. Loved that they are socially responsible and sustainable. Bring a fat wallet. We were club members a few years ago but discontinued to try new wineries - it had nothing to do with their wines or the winery. We stopped in to taste last week and were amazed at the price for tasting and the price for their wine! Wow! I know tasting fees are going up in the area but I'm still put off by a $15 per person fee. Add to that a very short list of what they are pouring (5 wines - that's $3 for each sip) and I'm standing in the tasting room wishing we hadn't come - especially since none of the wines appealed to us. The reds seemed harsh - perhaps too young. On a very positive note the people who run the place are really nice and outgoing and are very philanthropic. read more

Sorry Oso Libre! Compared to the other wineries I visited in Paso, this was not a favorite. To be fair, I visited on a very rainy November day so could not enjoy outdoor space and everyone inside had on big wet jackets. There seemed to be 3 small tasting rooms/bars inside but no consistent vibe or atmosphere among them. Our pourer was new but very friendly and on-top of things. Three of the reds on the tasting flight were primitivo or primitivo blends, and they were all fine, but not really distinct from one another. I personally would try other Paso wineries over this one. read more

Yes, the winery has some wonderful sustainability practices, and livestock, and a frisbee golf course, but the wine is not good. I try not to judge a place by the vibe, because although being crowded & touristy & loaded with gimmicks/merch/trophy wives has often correlated for me with disappointing wine, there have been exceptions, and I've been surprised at times. This is one of those places were I could've judged. I poured out pretty much everything. The wine was too sweet and not at all complex (basically like alcoholic juice). I've had worse, and would maybe nurse a glass if it was served complimentary at a social event, but that's about it. read more

My GF and I loved this place. The staff and owners are extremely friendly, the place is cool and they have a very unique business model. The wine - as good as you can find on a simple drive through North West Paso Robles. Do try the this and the other Winerys located off Vineyard. We did and really glad we found this winery and a few others. Alot will depend on the time of day and day of the week you come in, but you should find it one of the best winerys in town. They also raise Angus Beef on site and once you become a member you can also order steaks from them. Great concept. Love the fact they are 100% sustainable farmers. Hoo Hoo!! read more

I don't drink that much wine. Didn't think I'd ever join a wine club. This winery sold me. Very friendly staff. They recognize probably all their wine club members when they walk in. They take your picture when you join the club and cycle them as a screen saver on the computer. Very very smart. Sustainable practices. Huge plus. Great wines. Frisbee golf course. When you are there, you really feel like family. Year after year Oso Libre Winery turn out the most amazing wines and creative blends. Our favorites are the 2013 Quixotic Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2013 Por Vida Estate Blend! The Quixotic presents aromas of plum, violet and ripe blackberry, while it finishes with molasses and spiced tea. The Por Vida in comprised of their estate Mourvedre, Primitivo, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This blend is earthy with a dry finish! This is just a peek of what you get! If you're lucky enough to go on one of the chosen Saturdays in the Summer time, you can partake in their Angus burger day. These special burgers are amazing and enough to keep one coming back for the next burger Saturday. The estate Angus burgers are oak grilled to perfection with cave aged Gruyere, azucar caramelized onions, whole grain mustard aioli, topped with organic field greens all on a fresh baked brioche bun. What a great place! Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. Many of the wines are true Bordeaux-style wines. The sheep in the vineyards were awesome, and the vineyard dogs were well behaved. This is a family owned and operated business concentrating on quality wine, not quantity. We enjoyed every wine that was poured, from the Viognier to the Estate Blend "Por Vida". Oso Libre is not your typical tasting room. Between the wind generator and solar panels on the roof, they provide 100% of the winery's power. We really appreciated the efforts by the family to be as sustainable as possible. If you're looking for a place to bring your picnic lunch and have a glass of wine, they have a great picnic area situated over the vineyards. The warm welcoming and friendly attitude in the tasting room was refreshing. Put this one on your "Must Visit" list for the next time you're wine tasting in Paso. read more

We visited on a really busy day and actually had to wait for someone to leave to get a parking space. The grounds are beautiful, and they are definitely dog friendly (I've never seen so many dogs at a winery, and that's a good thing!) The winery is a family business. I believe the winemakers wife was pouring our tasting. We also met the winemaker. Very friendly people who obviously have a passion for what they do. 5 stars for the service and hospitality. One unique thing I noted was that they had a wine club option where the wine came in a beautiful etched bottle. If I remember correctly you can bring the bottle back at wine club pickup time and get it refilled with the current release. Most of what we tasted appeared to be blends. They did have a Cab, though I'm not sure if it was 100% Cab or not. For me nothing really wow'd me. We enjoyed the Primoroso enough we took a bottle. read more

Just....wow. I'll get it out of the way that their wine is really good. Really really good. These guys are also doing it the right way - cover crops, grazing animals, owls-as-pest-control, no pesticides - aka a closed ecological loop that yields wine that is sustainable and a beautiful, working farm to complement it. Wine club members can even buy quarterly shipments of their grass-fed beef (pretty sweet that we get our wine and our beef from the same plot of land). If you go, be sure to try the Rosalinda - it's a rose of the same batch of GSM grapes they use for the red GSM blend. Kris (the owner) explained that they pull some of the juice off of the skins early, using it for the rose, while the remainder sits on the skin until it gets super inky. The rose has bright acidity and minerality....everything you'd want in a Rhone-style rose. The other standouts for us were the Primitivo (tastes like blackberries steeped in cloves!) and the Solera: Oso Libre's unique blend of 17+ grapes that are continually layered into a cask over time from wines from throughout the vineyard. The result is a 'living wine' that has no vintage and no breakdown of the blend, so it always tastes different. It had a stunning, lush, balanced flavor that blew my top off. It's a limited production, so you have to be a club member to try: then you buy a (ridiculously cool looking) Solera bottle and have it filled straight from the tap (kind of like a growler at a brewery). Reggie gave us lots of attention at the tasting table, breakdowns of each wine, and the process they use for each. By the end, though their prices are high, you have a full understanding and appreciation for why that is - in fact, I was happy to give them my money. A holistic approach to winemaking and farming that is worth every penny. read more

My husband and I were vacationing with two other couples. We had visited a few other wineries, and were seeking out one last stop to conclude our day. A field full of alpacas drew us into Oso Libre, and we are so glad we stopped. The husband and wife owners were absolute gems, but let's face it, unfriendly people simply don't own alpacas. As we were chatting with the owners, we asked for area restaurant recommendations. Not only did they offer up an excellent suggestion (but that's another review), they actually got on the phone and made a reservation for our group. Hit this place on a weekend when they are grilling burgers from their house raised Angus Beef. This burgers are the best I've had in ages. Cooked over a wood fire, carmelized onions with melted gruyere cheese and a grainy mustard. Heaven on a bun. Burgers aside, this place is really a fun tasting. They were pouring 4 outstanding wines the day we arrived (day before Father's Day) and were celebrating one of their wines taking in 2nd place 98(?) points at the San Francisco Wine Fair a week earlier. I really enjoyed their carnal wine blend. The staff was really fun and personable. Definitely felt welcomed there. My only caveat is arrive early on barbecue day as the lines are long and parking gets scarce. read more

Wine club member and lifetime fan of OSO LIBRE. I was sort of shocked to see some negative reviews. We've never felt ignored or snubbed by the staff. Even before we were wine club members, we were always treated amazing and the staff has been nothing but attentive and on point. Perhaps because we're locals and not visiting during harvest or zinfest we have not experienced the huge crowds that others claim they have. Whenever we go, even if there is a large group there, we are warmly greeted by Liz or one of the Freeland/Behrs. We love the little shop with the gourmet chocolates, cookbooks and angus beef. The prices of wine there really reflect the quality, and if you're a wine club member the discount is pretty substantial. We love bringing our out of town friends here, the vineyard and tasting room are so beautiful. There is a little room off the tasting room where you can enjoy your wine and lunch! We've lived in this area for 5 years and visited a lot of wineries, I know what it feels like to walk into a stuffy, uptight environment where I am ignored or not given as much friendly attention than other patrons. This isn't that sort of place. Oso Libre is laid back, fun, young and hip. As 20 somethings, we love it here and love love love the wine. They may not take themselves too seriously, but you can tell they do take their products seriously. read more

Everyone I know that has wine tasted at Oso Libre has raved about how amazing this place is, so naturally, I had to try it. Of course, Oso Libre didn't disappoint. Both Chris and Jim are awesome and incredibly welcoming. Chris told me about his sister Stephanie who changed her name and then changed it back - I'm a Stephanie, after all, so it was a funny anecdote. Jim came over as we were eating lunch on the patio and chatted with our group about the winery and made sure we were having a great time. You'll definitely want to have lunch here (get a burger!), so plan accordingly when wine tasting in Paso. The winery has two dogs that roam around and are super cute. But, don't feed them! There are signs throughout the place warning that the pups get sick when fed human food. Well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome on the patio. When you arrive, you'll pay your tasting fee and get your glass. Depending on if you're a wine club member or not, you'll receive a different logo on your glass. We roamed around and took various tastes at the two different tasting bars. I'm not sure we were supposed to do this, but we did it anyway and the staff was cool with it. The patio has a beautiful view of the livestock, and is a great place to snap a photo or two by the grapevines. Also, Oso Libre doesn't get cell reception (for the AT&T users) so live in the moment and instragam your experience later. read more

My family and I have been wine tasting as a hobby for years now. In all honesty, we have never been impressed with Paso Robles wine (though the scenery is beautiful)...until we went to Oso Libre. The Vineyard is beautiful, and we loved it was a certified sustainable property (solar/wind power etc). The tasting room is surrounded by a farm where you can watch sheep, cow and even 2 Alpaca graze & "fertilize" the vineyards, which I actually found endearing. The dogs are adorable as well. The tasting room fits its contemporary cowboy brand perfectly. The owners were as kind as they were wine-savvy, which made the tasting experience all the more fun. I found all their wines incredibly tasty, but had a particular affinity for the rhone blend & their zinfandel; their bordeaux style wine was also incredible. Unlike most Paso Robles wines, their wine didn't rely on the overly-jammy & spicy zinfandel. All their whites were fresh and smooth on the palate, and all their red were well balanced with earthy and fruity flavors. We became members right away and actually spent about 2 hours there tasting and enjoying lunch. This is a MUST SEE for any wine and countryside lover. read more

I would love to come back in the summer when they barbecue their own beef. The wines were tasty and smooth. It also is a sustainable winery. We happened upon Oso Libre a few years ago, and we immediately fell in love with the wine,the grounds, and the employees. The owner even popped in and said hello and welcomed us. We decided against our "good" judgement and joined their wine club. We had previously vowed not to ever join any club again becasue we love just going to places andsicovering new wines... But, we wre impressed, and we don't live close enough. But, to our surprise, we were glad we did and have been enjoying shipments for their reds ever since. Recently we had some issues with a couple bottles. We called, and immediatley were told that replacements were on their way! They really stand by their product! We eagerly await the new arrivals!
