Slightly off the beaten path but well worth the search is this hidden gem. By far the best meal we had in Italy! The owner is a hardened old man that seems to have had bad experiences with tourists in the past so he rightfully caters to the locals. YOU MUST MAKE A RESERVATION! We made the mistake of waiting a half hour until they opened just for the owner to come out and ask if we had a reservation and turn us away. They seem to only have one seating on weekdays so we made a reservation for Saturday at lunch which starts at 12 but he told us to come at 1 and "don't be early". While we were eating many tourists came up and asked for a seat, they were asked if they had a reservation and when the answer was no they were turned away. Except when you spoke Italian or you were a group of beautiful young women. Our meal was entirely hand made with truffles and pastas like we've never eaten. Wow. I don't know which was better: the food or the customer service? I loved the waiters' comedic and cheerful attitudes! One of them (he had glasses) kept making us laugh all night, and the other guy (longer hair) really took care of us. He made sure we were getting everything we needed and was just a very warm and welcoming person. I don't know who of them I loved more. They were fun to be around. They made the atmosphere very fun, friendly, and cheerful to be in. My friends and I absolutely loved this place and wished we had saved the experience for our last night in Rome rather than our first night to end our experience in Rome on a positive note. For great Italian food, this is where it's at! This little slice of heaven and home is located off the main thoroughfare and boasts a a cozy, intimate dining experience. After being told that there weren't any available tables for our first night in Rome we quickly snatch the next available reservation for 21:00 the following night. WELL WORTH THE WAIT! Friendly staff guided us to our table which felt like it was located in the family room of some ones house... felt like "home". Chef Gabriel personally came out and created each table welcoming them to dinner. They even remembered the preferences of a fellow American family from the previous night. Food was delicious! Get everything with black-truffles on it! If you don't like truffles I'm sure they had other stuff which looked pretty appetizing ... but back to the black truffles... we had the bruschetta with black-truffles, fettuccini with porcini mushrooms and black truffles (vegetarian), the filet (steak) with (you guessed it) ... black truffles!!!! We dined here for lunch on November 29. The food was decent but the service was abysmal. The restaurant employee asked us to make the payment for the bill while we already made. He refused to recognize our payment even after we showed him the payment confirmation and receipt, claiming that he had no knowledge of the payment and demanded us to make a second payment for the same amount! When we made it clear (again) that we have made the payment, he closed the door and did not allow us to leave without making the payment. He finally spoke the manager at our insistence who confirmed our payment. We eventually were "released" from the restaurant after the horrific encounter. As many have said, and I followed, making a reservation seems like the smart move. We had a great little table downstairs and a few rooms down. They greeted us with champagne, as I mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary. In all the places I've dined in Italy, this place has the best service. From friendly convo, to menu recommendations, they couldn't have been better to us. For an appetizer, we split the decadent risotto, topped with black truffle shavings and a piece of Foie gras. If you love richness, this is a great way to go. Our entree we stuck to Roman classics in carbonara and bucatini all' amatricana. I'm a carbonara freak and it was delicious, but this was my first time having amatricana authentic from Rome. It's so much better than I ever thought it would be, and was ordered many more times during the vacation. For dessert, we had to split the tiramisu. I'm pretty much a big fan of anything food, however, my girlfriend isn't the biggest tiramisu fan yet I warned her, we are getting it all the time in Rome. She even loved it. It's hard to beat homemade tiramisu. This place was terrific. I wouldn't be surprised if they renamed it Osteria Truffle. Their truffle menu is reasonably priced and plenty of options. There's little I can add to all these excellent reviews. All I can say is TRY THEIR TRUFFLE DISHES! I had the fettuccine with black truffles, such a simple dish yet it was just amazing. I have had truffles quite a few times in Italy, but their fettuccine was the best and the most memorable truffle dish I have ever had. When I visit Rome again, eating here is on the very top of my list. I noticed there was a negative review written by a Japanese Yelper. He was saying that he was treated differently (i.e., poorly) because of his race. I am Japanese too, and, in fact, I experienced a "minor discrimination" myself at this restaurant. The waiter asked me if I wanted chopsticks. It was clear to me (and my girlfriend) that he was just joking; so, I did not get offended at all. Heading into Rome to see the Trevi Fountain & the Spanish steps I found Osteria Barberini on Yelp and had it as one of our F&B choices for dinner. An easy walk from Trevi we found it and as a table of 5 coming in around 8-9 we were very lucky one of the tables downstairs was open. The restaurant is very small, if you are a party of 3 or more I recommend calling to make a reservation so you know you have a table. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and provided excellent service. The only con I had here personally was the size of our portions in relation to what we were being charged. Everything looked like an appetizer or a small plate even when you were ordering an entree. The food was spectacular though, and the tiramisu was the bomb! Recommended by friend, called and tried to book the same day for dinner but failed, told that it's fully booked. Fortunately to get the table at 9:30pm for the next day. If I tell you that this is a restaurant for eating truffle, and all their dishes are like beef+truffle, pasta+truffle, ravioli+truffle and bread+truffle, I don't think you will put it as your first priority in Rome. But I highly recommend everyone to try it as long as you travel in Rome and remember to book a table in advance. We ordered mixed plate with clam+mussel and bread with sauce+black truffle (allow me to call it this way as I forgot the name) as starter. Clam+mussel is the best i've ever had. Super fresh, even I who is not that into fish ate a lot. The bread is also good, crispy with the special smell of truffle. Wife got pasta with white truffle as main dish at €30. Great pasta sauce and white truffle made perfect harmony. We were lucky to enjoy white truffle as it's just the third day that they started to serve it this year. It doesn't hurt to email a few days before to confirm yourself as well! This is probably one of the best meals we had in Rome, which was highly recommended by multiple patrons. Chef Gabriel brought our appetizer and greeted us, which was a really nice gesture. We absolutely loved all our food, everything was delicious and wonderfully made. Osteria barberini specializes in white and black truffle dishes and is a short 5 minute walk from the Barberini metro. It has seating for about 32 people on 2 floors (one is underground). I had heard so many wonderful things about the food here and was eager to try out the dishes. I tried/sampled the following dishes: - Crostini with black truffle and mushrooms (The black truffles went well with the crostini.) - Buffalo mozzarella with fresh tomatoes and arugula (This dish was incredibly refreshing and the mozzarella tasted so amazing. I have never tasted mozzarella this good before, unbelievably delicious, soft, and creamy.). - Fettuccine with white truffles (This dish was so freakin amazing. While the portion size was a little small, the restaurant was extremely generous with the white truffles. I really enjoyed the wonderful flavors this dish had). - Fettuccine with black truffles (Portion size for this dish was good and the black truffles tasted great here as well. Although taste wise I preferred the white truffle dishes). - Eggplant parmesan (This was another spectacular dish. I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful all the ingredients came together.) - Seafood pizza (The pizza crust itself was a little too crispy for my taste, but there was a good variety of seafood on this dish that really made this dish stand out). - Half lobster and fettucine (the lobster tasted good with the pasta). - Sea bass (The sea bass is a good healthy grilled fish option). All the dishes were reasonably priced and costing no more than 20 euros, the only exception was the fettuccine with white truffles (22 euros). Complimentary bread is served at the table, and one can dip it in some olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I have never had Italian food like this before. Everything tasted amazing and this was clearly the best Italian food I have ever eaten. I now see why my fellow YELPers have rated this place so high. The most epic meal of truffles~ black truffles, white truffles! You want Tartufo? You got it! The menu was under two choices : Bianco or Nero Tartufo: aka black and white truffles. Your choice of primi, secondi all comes with Truffles. It's like truffle orgie for your taste bud. Okay maybe more like ménage a trios? This is my 4th consecutive year trip to Rome. Also my 5th months here. I have my secret spots here, can understand the language, I adore the locals and they love me.. I know about a lot of restaurants and have been to a few too many. I'm talking about a small Italian run Non-3 for$15 - tourist trap restaurants. Most people hate the food in Rome because they went to the most touristy places in the middles of the town that speaks English. Like really? How can you complain if you haven't ventured out of your god damn hotel?! Trevi fountain ain't gonna feed you anything!! Back to food: this is in the middle of nowhere, literally. You come here to eat food, ( please make your reservation or else you will be one those rude tourists waiting at the door). It is so charming! You have to get through the host aka the older grandpa with his giant book to go in but once you are checked in, wait to taste some happiness. The whole place smells like a truffle haven!! Yummm. The chef speak little English but no worried there. I didn't come here to talk to him in my native language. We conversed for a bit before deciding on a few dishes. They have dishes from southern region and even some Tuscany dishes. They even have my all time favorite Sardinian dish: spaghetti vongole with bottarga! That was divine. After few lasagna, rigatoni and spaghetti with truffles later, we moved on to seafood dishes. Frito Misto, la sparda di Tartufo and bottles of white wine. They were all fantastic! The only dish that was a ok was the fish dish that our chef recommended. But I wasn't gonna tell him about it. I just won't order it again. Best part: making friends with the souchef (she thought I was filipina, I thought she was Hawaiian). Ended up chatting as we closed the place down. She was so nice, gave all of us free grappa shots :) And now we are friends!! it's always nice to have that experience in different places. Over all, I shall return again with reservations! I always do my research before a trip. So I made a couple reservations at two much talked about restaurants prior to leaving for our honeymoon. Luckily, both, and one of them being Osteria Barberini takes reservations through email. The restaurant was about a short 7-10 minute walk from our hotel. It's easily missed so keep your eyes peeled when you come here. They were able to take us a half hour early and we got a table in their basement level. It started getting stuffy throughout the meal with more tables filling up and also probably being seated at the basement level instead. The decor is simple but cute. He ordered a glass of Chianti, I stuck with water. For an appetizer we shared a porchini mushroom with shaved black truffles crostini. I ordered black truffle and porchini mushroom fettuccine and he ordered black truffle meatballs. We are huge truffle lovers so this meal didn't disappoint. The crostini was the perfect starter. Savory from the porchini and truffles, a bit of salt from the cheese. Worth the 6 Euro for a small starter to get you craving more truffles. The pasta was cooked perfectly Al dente and was a hearty portion. I loved the earthiness of the porcini and truffle shavings. The meatballs were delectable and loved how they offered this with truffle shavings which is quite unusual. I felt that the meatballs could have been served with a little more than the truffles and some arugula for 18 Euro though. My pasta dish was also 18 Euro. Our meal was truffletastic wonderful, but felt like something was missing. Perhaps another entree or pasta, or even a dessert? I did really enjoy our meal here and was tempted to come back to try more truffle dishes. The table of two next to us ordered quite a bit (and they looked like locals too) so it was definitely great to see their other tempting offerings. Omg one of the best places I had in Italy! All thanks to those darn good tasting truffles (what this place is known for). My dad usually spoils us with them and even orders white alba truffles. Wish that was in season, but even with the black truffles everything was a hit! Anyways make reservations for this place, two floors but still fairly small. Crostini with Truffles (5 stars)- Amazing spread, bread was toasted perfectly! Great way to start the meal :) Ravioli with truffles (5 stars)- Ordered this after the fact, because my risotto truffle dish didn't wow me and I couldn't leave without having some really good pasta with truffles. This didn't disappoint, I love ravioli and I love truffles. Seafood risotto with prawns & truffles (3 stars)- This wasn't a good dish for me, the risotto was pretty dry and not as creamy as it's supposed to be. I was pretty disappointed with this. Steak with truffles (4 stars)- This dish was pretty good, steak with truffles mmm. Steak was not bad but I've had much better (been to a lot of good steakhouses), still a solid dish especially with the truffles! Fettuccine with truffles (5 stars)- This was def my fav! My cousin ordered this, and just the texture of the pasta, the sauce and of course truffles. This is def the dish to order! Dessert (5 stars)- I don't remember what the dessert was called, but there's a picture. Besides gelato, it was the best dessert I had in Italy, kind of like a cheesecake. I'm not a huge fan of other traditional Italian desserts, so this was definitely a hit! We were there pretty late and talking to the owner, he gave us some limoncello for free, even gave us some truffles to take back! He was super nice! My #1 favorite place in Rome, I went to Roscioli a few days later and found myself wishing I was back at Osteria Barberini. A 3 minute walk from Barberini station on the metro, the restaurant is very convenient to get to and centrally located - walking distance to the Spanish Steps, Termini Station, and the always happening Piazza del Popolo. I highly suggest that you make a reservation if you want to secure a table for the time you are ready to have your meal. My table was on the ground floor and was a prime spot for both if I wanted a quiet meal or to people watch. The restaurant is cozy, with a handful of tables upstairs and more seating on the lower level. The host that night was also the owner, Angelo - he was very stressed that evening but he made an effort to say hello which I appreciated since I was dining solo. I started with the buffalo mozzarella with tomato and arugula and the fettuccine with black truffle and porcini mushrooms. The ingredients were fresh and well prepared, the fettuccine was heavenly - a delightful balance of truffle flavor and homemade pasta, the portions were plentiful. I asked the sommelier for a local wine and the recommended Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone (Falesco), white blend, was a perfect pairing for my dinner on a hot summer day. I was already full, but I still wanted to try more food from this talented kitchen - after a long day of sightseeing, I'm here for a treat. So I ordered (via a suggestion) the sea bream with white truffle cream sauce and it did not disappoint. They were busy with many requests for tables that Saturday evening and had to turn a few customers away but I did not feel rushed. I enjoyed the meal at my pace and the staff could not have been more accommodating (unlike other places that would have been unpleasant and rude because they want to turn a table). I even volunteered to give up my table but they reassured me that I was not imposing. Ended the evening with some limoncello and tiramisu for dessert. I took a long, leisurely stroll back to the hotel, with a smile, thinking fondly of the wonderful meal I just had... When in Rome, do not miss Osteria Barberini. So I have a particular affinity for oxtail. Oxtail is one of those dishes that developed in the Trastevere part of Rome as a result of servants picking through what their owners threw out as "worthless." It's usually braised and prepared with a spicy tomato sauce and served with toast points. Though I have traditionally eaten this with knife and fork I was encouraged (twice!) by the proprietor to use my hands. Dumping my French manners to defer to "when in Rome" I picked up the pieces and dug in. "That's how the locals do it," he said to me in Italian as I happily munched. He hadn't known that I had walked 30 minutes to find his spot. It had been 5 years since my last visit to Rome (I lived there 15 years ago) and I thought that surely I would find a restaurant with oxtail and kept my eye out for "coda alla vaccinara" at all the posted menus. After 15 minutes in this fashion I asked google where I might find oxtail in Rome. Not only was the food good but the restaurant was charming and all the desserts (you better save room, this is Italy!) are house-made, an increasing rarity in both Italy and France. Will always remain as one of the best meals I have ever had. From the funny and friendly server/chef to the amazing food that I keep going over in my mind about I can't wait to return. My girlfriend and I walked 20 minutes to get here and we're turned down without reservations so we made reservations for the next night at 9:30 which is usually our bedtime but we figured it would be worth it after reading reviews, it certainly was!!! They started us with a lentil dish that was much like falafels made of lentils, which I am not normally not so much of a fan of but enjoyed from here. The caprese that we got had buffalo mozzarella and was fantastic and can only be rivaled by Il Pirata in Vernazza. The cheese is just fantastic!! I then got the truffle risotto which is excellent and I almost never order risotto. I went out on a limb to try it and super happy I did. My girlfriend got the truffle lasagna and it was by far the best lasagna I have had the pleasure of tasting. Slightly crisp on the outside and lots of truffles hanging out on top. We finished with the tiramisu which was fantastic. When I found out about Osteria Barberini through Yelp, I definitely had my doubts: Was this just another restaurant trying to lure in un-suspecting tourists with their "special" truffle menu, or were they something much more? Time to find out. We started off sharing a Bruschetta with Black Truffle and Pecorino Cheese. This was the perfect appetizer for us, and there was truffle flavor bursting in every bite. Despite the huge pile of shaved truffle and cheese on each bruschetta, eating this wasn't messy at all. I slightly regret not ordering another plate of this! For the entrees, we first ordered a Lasagna with Black Mushrooms, Porcini Mushrooms, Mozarella, and Parmesan Cheese. Instantly mind-blown. If I kept a list of top life-changing foods I've ever eaten, this lasagna would for sure rank pretty high on that list. The pasta was perfectly thin and soft, and the cheese wasn't overwhelmingly heavy. Best of all, the truffles on top just completely transformed the entire dish - so much flavor and savoriness. I later counted at least 11 layers in my lasagna - can you believe that? Eleven!! I will be dreaming about this lasagna for weeks. The second entree was a Fettucine with Black Truffle and Porcini Mushrooms. Also really delicious but not as amazing as the lasagna. Perhaps it's because I really like thin noodles, but I felt that the fettucine was a bit thick and couldn't absorb as much of the truffle flavor - would have loved to see this dish with papparadelle instead. Overall still a great dish though. If you're visiting Rome for even one day, make sure that Osteria Barberini is on your list. read more
