I don't live super nearby to this Co-Op grocery market but my good friend does and she brought me here while on a walk, and I was blown away by the whole place! Firstly, it was my first time shopping at a co op and I really really really love that aspect of it. Anytime I can support a business like this, I want to! But beyond that, I was skeptical that the prices would be outrageous and was fairly surprised that they really weren't! Ok sure, some items were pricey, and that's true for any small store in this city, but for the bulk items and dry goods, the pricing was incredibly reasonable! I even found the same scones I buy at my local box box grocery store for cheaper here!! What?! I was also just blown away by the variety of choices.. they've got everything here.. produce, condiments, dry goods, chips, snacks, bulk items, tea, medicines and supplements, and a section of boutique handmade goods that was so awesome to look through!! I don't live close by but I will be back anytime I go to see my friend (which is often). read more

Looking for a clean, less chaotic bulk store and co-op in SF? Other Avenues is what you're looking for! OA has a plentiful bulk section with all the teas, grains, and beans you could ask for. A few hard-to-find favorites are: dried boba, soba noodles, THAI TEA(?!) and all the liquids. And of course, bringing your own containers is encouraged. Phew! You know, despite how I've passed by Other Avenues numerous times over the years, I can't say I had ever taken the time to actually stop in and look around before. In fact, the one and only time in the past when I did manage to make it inside was to meet up with a friend who was picking up something. However, just as I walked through the door, I ended up turning around immediately when I saw her paying at the register. Other than that one time, I can't say I've ever had much of a reason to come here. That is, until just recently, when, funny enough, I ended up coming back with said friend to picking up something for our friend's potluck! While I always knew that Other Avenues was unlike the majority of markets out there, I never really knew the extent to which that is true. As an employee-owned cooperative, their values and principles don't necessarily start and end with profits, as evidenced in what you'll find on their shelves. Rather than just selling your typical name brands and goods left and right, the entire store is stocked with more unique offerings and specialty products, whether it be their health and wellness items, wide array of organic produce, or the sheer volume of vegetarian and vegan foods. More significantly, though, they make efforts to promote greater sustainability by offering an expansive variety of dry goods in bulk and encouraging customers to bring in their own reusable jars. In our case, we may not have picked up any of those items, but they still had plenty of beers and wines for us to choose from, including many I had never seen before. What's more, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices here aren't terrible. Objectively, there's no denying they are more expensive than the likes of Trader Joe's, Safeway, or Lucky's, but it's actually within reason when you consider how Other Avenues is a small co-op and the nature of what they sell. So, while I wouldn't necessarily come here to fill a lengthy shopping list to restock my pantry, if I'm nearby and need to pick up something specific or explore their bulk goods, it's nice to know that my money is staying local with the employee-owners rather than a corporation's coffers! read more

I lived quite close for a long time and never went. I recently popped in when I was walking about and got some stuff for the week. Unfortunately the yuzu sprinkles I got for rice was super super stale. The other stuff was perfect. I didn't ask for the receipt so I just let it go. I went again and spent a little more time browsing and the selection is beautiful. They have so many sustainable products and huge variety produce. Nothing looked bad, everything looked fresh. So I'm concluding it was a fluke. The people that work there are very intuitive, one day he talked to me the other he didn't, and I don't think it's because of himself. Oh man what I wouldn't give to have one of these near my house, an awesome little grocery place with not so little items, organic and fry goods by bulk plus prepared foods, and a little corner to the right of the entrance with gifts and sundries. They have all the basics like eggs, bread, milks, etc. plus a whole lot more, e.g. I'm obsessed with the bolani brand flatbreads with stuffings, such as spinach or pumpkin or vegan, which they have. So few places have them and I'm a huge fan. The vibe is laid back and chill, btw., did I mention produce fruits and veggies? Super down to earth helpful friendly service and a charming funky ambience, exactly like what you'd picture being near the beach. Parking is an absolute bear. Really neat neighborhood grocery store. They have a nice selection of nuts and nut butters. There's this Hummingbird brand trail mix called "Hazelnut Munch" I discovered in Portland that's stocked here. It's a mix with roasted hazelnuts, dried cherries, and milk chocolate disks. And recently discovered my new favorite chili crisp thanks to them. The Kari Kari garlic chili crisp jar is what I imagined a good chili crisp should be. So thank you to the person who decided to stock it. They also stock bread from Rosalind bakery, but you'll need to go early to grab a loaf before they sell out for the day. It's kind of out there. As in, you can almost smell the saltwater. It is only five or six blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I've been shopping here the past two or three years but knew about it when my former employer supplied them products. An Outer Sunset staple, the location was a logical choice in the '70's when health foods was a 'craze' and not yet a lifestyle. The demographics were mainly your 'hippies' and surfers and, being within eyes' view of Ocean Beach, the neighborhood obviously supported them over the years. Though I find many healthy items at those chains, natural food markets, and farmers' markets, there were certain soy based brands that I no longer could find especially after shelter in place became mandated. The staff were kind in connecting me with the buyer who kindly provided me the scheduled delivery days so that I could time my visits to find the items that I sought. Besides prepared foods, they have fresh produce in a refrigerated section inside the store as well as along the sidewalk. They carry supplements, pasta sauces, and variety of health oriented products so it can be a one-stop shop for some. Under the current circumstances, they are limiting capacity for shoppers so there may be a line during peak times. Hand sanitizers are provided and social distancing and masks are required. Contactless payment is available. Will be back when those items are on my shopping list again. read more

Great co op market. There aren't many businesses out here, so I'm happy to have a good health food store nearby. Top notch produce and bulk section. They have all the stuff I love and it's never too busy. Every now and then some terrible person will bring a stroller in there, but usually it's easy to navigate. Don't get put off by any of the bad reviews, they're all people like 'they didn't stop everything they're doing to help me pick out stuff' and 'the cashier wasn't nice to me and didn't cater to my weirdness'-- grow up, you're at a co op and that's life. read more

Love that the entire staff was wearing gloves & masks. There was a sneeze guard barrier between the cash register and customers getting rung up. I bought a quinoa salad that was a bit pricey but I appreciated how cautious the store associate was when handling the utensil I asked for...he did not grab it by the head but rather by the handle. Their assortment of produce seemed fresh, beautifully arranged, and fairly priced(considering it was all locally grown). We are regular customers of Other Avenues - it's just a few blocks away from our home. We've shopped here for 20 years. Early on there were some owner/workers who were really annoying - unfriendly know-it-alls (you might see this in reviews from years ago). But they seem to have moved on about 10 years ago - everyone we've run into the past few years have been wonderfully helpful - and friendly. And it feels great to support a cooperative that continues to provide excellent service to the neighborhood since the 1970s. read more

First of all, don't pay heed to the 1 star reviews, as most of them are 10+ years old, and all those staff are long gone. This is a co-op, where the worker/owners are constantly evolving. I can say that the staff from the last 5 years have been great. On to the review. I hadn't shopped at a food co-op since my college days, but I finally tried this place a few years ago and I've been a loyal customer since. I do almost all of my food shopping here, especially in the bulk section. If you're into zero-waste, you have a lot of options here. I buy tons of snacks, rice, beans, nuts, pasta, spices, flours, teas, nut butters, oils, soap, shampoo and conditioner, all in bulk at great prices. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions and help you find things. I also love the neighborhood, right by the beach. Shopping isn't a chore at all when you're in such a fun place. This is one of the Parkside district's treasures. read more

I first heard of the Other Avenues Food Store Cooperative at the World SF Veg Fest at Golden Gate Park back in 2016 where one table had the Other Avenues are Possible: Legacy of the People's Food System of the San Francisco Bay Area by Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff. The book mentioned the origins of Rainbow Grocery which I frequent often & also mentioned Other Avenues Food Cooperative which I visited from the first time yesterday. Other Avenues has several unique vegan baked goods including: Kerri Kreations Vegan Kookies Aunt Nettie's Vegan Turnovers from Santa Cruz San Francisco Pig Out Vegan Pastries for vegan donuts & quiches Pepple's vegan donuts from Oakland So awesome that Other Avenues has been around since 1974. It is a small natural food store yet it is dialed. It has a good range of organic produce. Speciality items like the vegan baked goods I mentioned above. The bulk section here is lovely. They also have a large spice bulk section & a awesome bulk section of loose teas including some wonderful herbal blends. They even have bulk coffee. I think Other Avenues is a boon to residents of the Outer Sunset as saves locals the need to go to places like Rainbow for speciality items that are available right here. read more

The bulk foods section is superlative. -tremendous selection of nuts, grains, dried fruits, snack-y treats, pastas, oats, etc. (-wary of the huge tub of tahini just sitting out waiting to be sold, however. Shouldn't it be stored in a refrigerated space given that it's basically an open container of sesame paste?) They've an interesting range of domestic cheeses, both pasteurized & raw. Bread selection includes locally baked loaves from the likes of Sour Flour, a solid fave. The fruit & veg selection at O.A. is less abundant than what one might hope, but it's mostly about seasonal availability with a focus on organic products, so there's not the massive range of a big chain store. O.A. has a really robust tea & spices section as well. Grab a wee bag & fill'er up! -need just four ounces of dried mint or ground cumin? Weight it out on the scale provided! The coffee selection suits my needs as well. They typically stock Verve, Andytown, and Four Barrel. Plus, there's a rotating selection of beans to keep things interesting. The end of Judah Street near Ocean Beach has so many interesting food businesses with a organic beachy motif. I have been to this store once and I got some bananas. Today, I decided to visit again, I was looking at their beer. I saw some t-shirts/sweatshirts/bags they were selling, but the t-shirts were overpriced. When I checked out, I saw a lady buying a whole stack of their shirts as Xmas gifts. I saw a refrigerated shelf with interesting things and so I picked out a small mango lassi, which was mango cardamom lassi. The company is Dosa. I also got Cacao Coconut Mousse, which is vegan gluten free. The company is Shakti Distinct Desserts. The company is from Berkeley. There is no added sugar. So, I could find some interesting things at Other Avenues. It has a hippy, beachy branding, but it's expensive and high-end. It's a nice community grocery store by Judah and Ocean Beach. read more

I really want to like this place. It's a small, charming grocery co-op and has a wonderful selection of healthy options which has a "community" feel to it in the heart of the sunset district. But every time I've went there, I've come out feeling berated, judged, and looked down upon. At first I thought that I was looking too much into it, or that there was one bad apple in the while bunch. But after about three or four visits and other people having similar experiences, I will simply take my business somewhere else where I don't feel like an idiot after walking out of the store. I went there with my partner and they immediately said "what part of one person a household do you not understand." Hold up...that's assuming that we are living in the same household (which we are not currently) and if it was sooo important, why isn't there signs everywhere/the first thing that you show/say when people walk up?! Plus it's an honest mistake that I've seen other families have a similar experience. I get it, it's a crazy time we live in and everyone's stress levels are heightened during the shelter in place order and safety is our number one priority. But you don't have to be a snobby jerk with your high and mighty comments. I was waiting in line when I saw something similar happen to another family. When asked to speak with one of the owners, the co-owner not only asked one of the family members to leave the shop, but also asked their partner to leave and not get "aggressive" when they were simply trying to plead their case‍‍‍ This makes the store owners and workers look like terrible snobs that are passing judgement and look down on the patrons and community that they serve. Sorry, but I personally don't enjoy getting berated during my shopping experience. Like I said, I really want to support small mom and pop shops and the convenience of the neighborhood store but if the workers don't change their attitude, they are unfortunately going to run themselves out of business. I do not recommend this store and personally will not give them any business in the future. The reason I was interested in it and specifically drove here, was for vegan items only. Well first of all, they don't carry any bigger selection than I get at Safeway or Luckys or Trader Joe's: you can get exactly same items like Vegainese, Tofurky, kimchi, Chao cheese, sausages. Only this store charges like $2-3 more! For each item! Secondly, I didn't appreciate the store clerk's attitude. They do have a bigger selection of chocolates, but it's not easy to navigate it and I personally found only 1 brand of chocolate clearly marked V. So I asked them politely, can they help me to find / do they have any other brands of vegan chocolate? The response was very mean: "pretty much ALL our chocolates are vegan except a few. You need to look better" So I felt ashamed I didn't look good enough I dove again into researching their chocolate shelves. And guess what, she had no idea, only mean attitude! This brand contains milk, that one contains milk. I thought it's store clerks job to say, "hi we have many brands of chocolates to chose from, I'm happy to help you / show you / find you some, or recommend my favorite " The clerk had no idea and no knowledge. And no desire to help. I ended up putting all items I intended to buy back on their shelves. I will not give my dollar to such business. It's not a "friendly neighborhood grocer" it's just an overpriced store that carries all items a TJs/Wholefoods would carry. Only this one gives you a hella hipster attitude. I try to support small local businesses, but after a couple years with Other Avenues I've decided to do my zero waste shopping at Rainbow instead. OA is small, so they don't have everything yet I loved the small friendly co-op vibes of this place! However, these last several months I've noticed their staff to be less pleasant and making more mistakes. They stopped giving credit for bringing your own container unless you specifically ask. They frequently record my tare incorrectly, causing me to pay the weight of my own container. Their service really deserves 2 stars, but it's still a good neighborhood store. read more

Half the time I come here there's a dog in the store, often off leash and sometimes yapping and sniffing the produce and other food. Seems unsanitary, and since my wife is very allergic I can't really go here without expecting to have to change clothes before I go back in the house. read more

Huge fan! Love the staff--they're all so friendly and helpful, especially patient and kind during these tricky Covid times. They also do an early bird hours for the elderly, I believe, which is lovely as I do worry about folks that are potentially more vulnerable and less able to pick up what they need--especially since folks are buying enough loo roll for 2320, let alone next week. I love the selection of products, high end and pricier as they are. It's not somewhere I'd normally be able to splash out on for my weekly shop, but at the moment I'm relying on them as my grocery spot of choice--both to support an indie place, but also for quality, kindness, and a reduced volume of folks to stay safe around! Plus they do this KILLER selection of posh chocolate that is my new addiction. TUMERIC CHOCOLATE, people. With COCONUT. Stop it! But don't. The only thing I didn't love was the jasmine rose loose leaf tea. Ooooh get me! What a first-world problem. Idk, it didn't have as much flavour as other teas I've tried. But, forget that--their fresh products are quality, their selection of breads and treats are top notch, and I love their dedication to offering reduced packaging/plastic on things like oils, cereals, and so on. OA is the reason I am now plant based. OA is my local grocery, a short walk from my home. During the pandemic, it became my go to source for all food. Previously I had eaten out at restaurants 80% of the time. OA does not sell any animal products other than diary, eggs and honey. As such, I organically, without really noticing, transitioned to a plant based diet. Eventually I eliminated dairy and have made the recent decision to give up eggs and go completely, 100% plant based. A slow, steady evolution as I embraced cooking for myself and sourcing healthy, nourishing ingredients. I credit OA for the nudge I needed to make the choice to go plant based. I think everyone knows the ethical and moral imperative to reduce/eliminate animal products from their diet, especially since animal agriculture is a key driver in the climate crisis. Yet meat and dairy is such an easy default cause it is often the most accessible in stores, restaurants, etc. What we each need is the nudge to make the change in our own habits. Accessibility is key. Another reason why I respect and admire OA is their commitment to ethically sourcing brands, particularly Co-ops. And of course, their bulk section is amazing, especially for a store of their size. I notice quite a few reviews bemoaning the customer service. This is a reflection of our larger culture of viewing "essential workers" (service workers) as merely there to serve us with a "customer is always right" attitude. 2020 was stressful, most of all to the workers out there supporting the supply chain, working in grocery stores, driving delivery trucks, working in warehouses. To add insult to injury, these types of jobs are often the lowest paid and least respected by those more privileged (WFHers, etc). This store has a lot for its small quaint space. I really only have two criticisms of this place. The scented bath soaps or whatever that is right near the entrance is a little overwhelming. It's almost as if you get punched in the face with popery right when you walk in. It's a bit too much. & I could be wrong, but I don't think people really buy too much of that. Perhaps consider ordering less of it, and toning down that thick smell. The second criticism this with respect to their cheese case. Not a bad selection. But a lot of it was very old. As old as early December (packed-on date). Some of it was even molding. Which is fine, I know you can just cut off moldy spots on cheese. But cheese several months old probably isn't going to taste like anything, and generally speaking will be very dry. The moment a cheese is cut from the wheel, it begins losing its flavor. Might need a crash course on rotation and keeping things fresh. Of course not everybody is going to buy everything, but nobody's going to buy old stuff with mold on it. As far as the rest of the store, it looked great! Lots and lots of organic produce, and minimal ingredient dairy products. I was most impressed with some sort of a grass fed butter. There is also sheep yogurt which can be difficult to find. This is a specialty food shop that carries lots of unexpected little delicious things. I wasn't sure what to expect of their produce department, but when I saw it I was delighted. I like that they used egg cases to stock produce. It's a nice reuse of something that will eventually break and probably get thrown away. The produce looked well stock and fresh. I was impressed with it. The staff seemed a little apathetic, but then again I didn't ask any questions. That being said, a lot of them did just sort of look past the customers, & I didn't see any help being offered anybody. Not my business model, but when it its not that busy, it's not a bad idea if the members were to engage with customers. There was also a pretty generous selection of various oats, nuts, and dried fruit. Definitely can get all of one's staples here. on a normal grocery list at this little store. I also love collectives and would encourage locals to support this collective. It's pretty great for basics, and even better with respect quality ( perhaps ignoring the cheese). read more

My Top 2 grocery spot in the city (up there with Rainbow). Great selection for the size and a wide breadth of options. I was blown away on my last visit by how much stuff I could find jam-packed in the little store that I couldn't find anywhere else. Never ever ever will I patronize this place again after yet another rude experience with the staff. Let me tell you how this store used to be -- it used to be a lot friendlier and a lot more easy going. I don't know how to describe the staff now. Indifferent? Haughty? One of my favorite vacation activities is grocery shopping. It sounds boring, but I like to shop for food items wherever I may be. I was happy to stumble upon an honest-to-goodness co-op when I was in the Sunset neighborhood in September. I wanted to pick up some health food items for our hotel room, and I was able to find good organic apples and a great brand of aloe juice. Somehow, I managed to hold back from buying one of the many delightful reusable bags. The bags were a little too pricey for me to buy. Too bad, it would have made a great San Francisco souvenir. read more
