When my husband and I heard there was a new sushi place opening in Healdsburg we were excited and anxiously awaited a time when we could try it. Otoro went above and beyond any expectations I had. The quaint dining room holds a few tables but the sushi bar is where the fun is. Watching Richard (one of the sushi chefs) behind the bar is so much fun and he makes it feel like he's creating a meal for close friends each time. The "Choice Special" is an incredible deal with your choice of 7 nigiri and any one special roll from their expansive list. Hands down the best quality fish I've had in Sonoma County without going broke. I'm so happy that Otoro has settled into Healdsburg. Stopped by for lunch, I was greeted, sat down, and nobody attended me for 10 minutes. No water, no taking orders. I just sat. The food looks typical of any sushi shop, but I was not able to try it due to lack of service. Maybe they need more staff. Seems like they can't handle a lunch rush on a Thursday. We got the big brother, lion king, scallop roll and veggie tempura. Oh also the spicy edamame was delicious!! Like other reviewers have noted, Otoro is a much-welcome addition to Healdsburg. There's a lot of demand for quality sashimi/sushi in town, and this place does not disappoint. During my 1st visit, I ordered the Sushi and Sashimi #3 for lunch and it was a lot of food - enough that I had to share with my spouse. Everything was so fresh and flavorful - I felt spoiled. My spouse ordered the Tempura Udon and that was excellent. Everything coming out of the kitchen was beautifully presented. Yes, this place is very small. There are only 5 small tables in the main dining area, and approximately 10 seats at the bar. I went for lunch on a Saturday and I had no problem getting a seat. I hear that getting a seat for dinner can be more tricky. I suppose you could order food to go, but you would miss on the excellent presentation. Service was excellent. read more

I am SO HAPPY that this place exists. There have been five or six restaurants in this location since I moved to the area, and this is far and away the best. It is now my favorite sushi in Sonoma County, just edging out Hana in Rohnert Park. The fish is so fresh, and the chef does amazing things with flavors and textures. I've been eating there twice a week since they first opened. My favorites are the Salmon Skin roll, the Princess roll, and the Spicy California roll. The chicken salad is also very good! To top it off, the prices are very reasonable. I know a lot of people share my opinion, because every time I've been in, they've been very busy. Not a bad experience for our first visit to the new Otoro. Be mindful that this place is SMALL! Make a reservation if you are able to or be prepared to wait a while during prime times because seating is very minimal! We came in for my Mother in laws birthday with a group of seven, there was almost no one there, but when we left people were waiting for tables to clear. Service was a tad bit slow at first and then became better as the night went on. There is a lot of options on the menu and can be slightly overwhelming at first. I had the Big Spider roll which was good but did not completely blow me away. My family said their appetizers and rolls were good as well. I want to come back at some point and see if there are any changes and progress to hopefully upgrade to a five star. read more

We were at the local best western and this was right up the block. Upon entry it was warm and friendly. It's in an usual place behind a java spot but when walking up you can smell the goodness. We sat in a half booth and immediately ordered miso and salad. Both very yummy. There was no seaweed but still it was good. Then I got the veggie tempura and veggie egg roll. Tempura was light tasty and had no oil residue. The egg roll was just ok but i Love gyoza. The thing is the veggie is never as Good as the original but that is everywhere not just here. I think I need to stop ordering them. Lol. The sauces could use some rice vinegar in them. My mom got the chicken yakatori. It had pineapple and green onion. It had a wonderful grilled taste. Then she ordered the 1 entree of chicken. She couldn't eat it after sharing my tempura. It was a bento box. They included her soup and salad in it rather than charge her more. It came with rice, edamame, and daikon. So she took home the rice and chicken for lunch. Plus she had a beer. I finished with an avocado roll with a ton of wasabi. Overall the price was amazing. Beautiful sushi, more artistically done than a lot of places. Friendly, efficient service. Attractive modern Japanese environment. I felt the fish was fresh but not the absolute freshest. My sniffer is so sensitive, maybe more so than the average person and certainly more than my husband's, and I thought my roll had the faintest of fishy smells. Best sushi I have had in this area. Fresh fish, and complimentary fresh pineapple for dessert! I ordered Toro sashimi, a salmon hand roll, and a spicy hamachi roll. The spicy hamachi roll was served with sweet kabayaki-like sauce which was different than what I am used to. It balanced well though, that roll brings the heat!! The service was the only reason for the lack of a fifth star.. one waitress was extremely friendly and running around like mad.. the other seemed rather uninterested and almost in the way. Nice small sushi restaurant popular with locals. There is a typical sushi bar and a separate small dining area with only a few tables that can get crowded. The menu includes some Japanese selections not typically served in a sushi restaurant, like ramen, which I can't comment on. The sushi menu includes common appetizers and the usual sushi standards as well as a long list of creative rolls. The miso soup and cucumber salad are better-than-average, but the tempura items I've tried seem bland. The fish is generally good and well prepared but what I would describe as very "Americanized", tending towards spiced fish (which I personally detest), rolls with tempura fried shrimp and heavy sweet sauces. The service is efficient and polite. The sushi chefs generally do their work without engaging customers, but a senior chef (who is not there every night) will and is quite personable. I wish I could rate the food? Maybe,, Excuse for ignoring our table on my birthday if you were busy? Nope,,,only one other couple it was 5:45pm,,,, Then we were grunted and pointed where to sit....oh seriously I thought this might be the worse part.. no it was not.... Then after at least 8 minutes.. did I mention there was only one table with two sitting at it? Yes 8 minutes..a woman who had her back to us on the phone,,,,flagged a very young man to bring us menus. No water, no greeting nothing.. here is the kicker...he actually tossed nearly threw the pile of huge heavy menus at us and turned and bolted. NO that did not happen...but alas it did. At this point we are getting scared....still no greeting no water no words... it's been approx 20 min. So rather than try to imagine there may be something wonderful at the end of the rainbow we bolted...actually casually got up,,and headed for the door. Not a peep. The woman still on the phone with her back to us. Not a word from either of the young men who were simply wandering around not doing a darn thing, Perhaps one of the worse intros to any restaurant in sonoma county I have ever encountered. So the star is really a zero for nothing but horrible non existent rude treatment...without as much as a word or a drop of water. If the woman on the phone was on an emergency call...I apologize and would understand,,but in that case the young man could have said something... Epic failure. No soup for me. read more

My "SO and I like to come to Healdsburg from the Bay Area for quick getaways and decided to try Otoro for sushi. Otoro quality of sushi, service and all round atmosphere is exceptional!!! After coming here one night the next getaway we came here for lunch and dinner on the same day!!! The sushi chefs cranked out so much sushi for dine in and take out they keep quite busy but the service was fast. The wait staff have it all down and the entire restaurant runs like clock work. Just got a chicken teriyaki entree / bento box to go for lunch. SO GOOD. The portions were giant and I am completely full without having even finished the rice. I wish I could rewind time and eat it again. Teriyaki sauce is fantastic, chicken was tender and flavorful, and I always love getting miso soup and edamame. I will order this again (and try other things!) for sure. I am not much of a sushi person (I know, I'm weird), but my co-workers who ordered the sushi were big fans.
