Another great restaurant discovered! We arrived in Healdsburg this afternoon and didn't know what to do for dinner, our hotel suggested this restaurant, and we could not have been more pleased. They have a great wine selection and lots of variety on their menu. We arrived early for our reservation and decided to switch our table to a seat around the open kitchen. The interiors are very lively with colorful art on the walls and a large wine room. I started with the Baby Lettuce and Grapefruit Salad. I am not a fan of Goat Cheese, so I asked to leave that part off. Even without it, it was beyond delicious! My husband started with the Little Gem Wedge Salad, he then moved onto the Rack of Lamb while I moved onto the Burger. We paired this with a fabulous Knightsbridge Cabernet. This is a gorgeous venue with a great wine list and fantastic cocktails. Beautiful decor, a tri-level restaurant with different menus on top vs bottom, and fire pits make this a great place for business lunches, adults only birthdays, and girls night out. The food isn't necessarily the best you''ll ever get (I recommend Valette, Guiso, or Willi's if you want the best food) but this will definitely have the coolest, swankiest vibe for drinks in town. read more

We asked if the dishes could be served family-style, and everything was incredibly solid. ​We tried the grilled octopus, the salad with grapefruit, the crab pasta, the rack of lamb, the foie gras, and the mushroom tempura. Honestly, every single dish stood out. The mushroom tempura was a massive highlight, the batter itself was beautifully seasoned, which really brought out the natural earthiness and deep umami of the mushroom. Paired with its perfect dipping sauce, it was so good that I'd honestly be happy just getting two orders of it with some garlic or fried rice and calling it a perfect meal. ​My other favorite was the rack of lamb, we asked for medium rare, and it was cooked to absolute perfection. The crab pasta was also great; you could really taste that deep umami flavor from the kombu. ​The only minor critique is the bread-to-foie gras ratio. It felt a bit off for sharing, and we had to ask for extra toast. It would be great if they adjusted the amount of bread based on the party size, especially when sharing family-style. ​We finished with the olive oil cake and the cheesecake for dessert, and both were excellent, perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Pretty chill spot in Healdsburg. Came here to celebrate Wifey's birthday. For our party of four, one person got the Chef's Tasting, two of us ordered the Founder's Menu, and I opted for A la Carte. Service was stellar, and the wines selected were solid... we shared everything that came to the table, but there seemed to be more misses than hits. My Wife's burger was way too dense, nothing on the Chef's Tasting really stood out much, and my almost $50 entree was described as a Lamb RACK...I got three little chops. Desserts were okay, but the cheesecake had a very weird texture to it. Standouts for me were the Octopus, Salad, and the Chicken dish. I'd come back for those three items. read more

Oh wow... i love this spot! I was in town for a couple days...daughter visiting with friends in Sonoma...she left me within 20 min of checking into hotel. I wanted to go out for a Happy Hour and looked into my list of places I want to try on here (based on recommendations for local friends). this looked perfect and i've never really experienced Healdsburg... The bar was packed and they do allow standing room but that's not what i wanted. Standing is fine and dandy if I was in a group but i was alone.... She offered either a table or at the counter overlooking the kitchen..I opted for counter. I had a perfect view of all the food being prepped. I was tempted to do the "founders" menu which is 3 courses for $50 ...option to add wine pairing for $30. BUT...i wasn't that hungry. I opted for the HH menu...i picked the Pepperoni flatbread + Baby lettuce & grapefruit salad. Happy Hour Rose wine... That salad was so damn good! the "croutons' were a goat cheese meringue. wow! dressing was perfectly done. the pizza was also amazing!! i had half of each to take back to hotel. they do have a wall of wine (by the ounce pours)...as impressive as it was ...i wasn't interested in walking over there to pour and sample. super fun atmosphere... phenomenal service spectacular food. 100% want to come back again! read more

Very disappointed in my experience today. We have been here before for dinner and had a great time. I thought the brunch would be similar. Here are some highlights: -We had to ask for water and took 3 people to ask us what type before it was brought over -The server did not know the menu well and forgot our a drink order and had to come back to ask for us to point to it -Eggs Benedict was way over cooked. My wife and I have eaten at The Matheson and Valette a number of times and we have always enjoyed chef Dustin's food and their overall hospitality and vibe. On Sunday we attended a special Crab & Seafood Boil afternoon event on the roof and it was terrific as always. We started with a number of passed small nibbles (included among the servers were the chefs two young daughters!) and the winners were the crab salad and the smoked salmon with caviar. They poured one of the Valette white wines and it was bright and crisp and a perfect accompaniment. The highlights of the lunch menu included a lovely perfectly dressed Cesar salad w white anchovies, a shrimp boil with corn and potatoes, a high quality smoked meat charcuterie board from nearby journeyman butcher shop and some lovely roasted garlic bread and the reason for the whole event was the local Dungeness crab roasted with a dusting of old bay. The crab was da bomb and I could have easily tried to stuff even more in my mouth if they kept the crabs coming ! The meal ended with various chocolates and cookies and we were stuffed, highly satisfied and glad we attended this special event ! Vegans/Vegetarians beware- you're not welcome here! I've been going with my husband since the opening of Roof106 and The Matheson and have given consistent feedback that the prix fixe menu (requires 2 person minimum-unfortunate for a date night) and ad hoc menu options are discriminatory to vegetarians/vegans since I like more than a salad or broccoli pizza. Cesar salad can't be made vegan. It's also not fair to my dining guests that want to do the Prix Fixe menu that they can't because of my dietary restrictions. Was surprised to be seated immediately at a counter overlooking the kitchen. Love watching the food come out. Was give 46 different menus for all the different things. Ok it was like 6, but still, thats a lot! Had a few different servers help me, which was nice but also a little confusing on who my actual server was. Yvette ended up being the one to help for the rest of the meal and she was awesome! I ordered the 6 Oz filet. Beautiful presentation. Perfect cook, but was unevenly seasoned and (for me) needed the accompanying sauces. The bed of mushrooms and shishito peppers were a nice addition. Chimichurri and XO was super good. 12/10 good. The bernaise sauce, for me was meh. For dessert, I ordered the Matheson Float. I ordered mine with the rum shot, strictly for research purposes, and it was the perfect way to end the meal. I had a reservation since it was Valentines Day. I was sat at what they call the "Chef's table" though it is just the bar around the open kitchen. Still nice though. My waiter was very attentive and friendly. First course, I opted for the caviar upgrade. Pillowy soft belinis with creme fraiche, unagi and a jar of caviar. Next was the hamach crudo, followed by celeriac soup, then petrale sole, brown butter filet with truffle & a fried shitake mushroom. Total surprise date night gem--we had no idea The Matheson was a Michelin-starred spot when we walked in. We just grabbed two seats at the bar in the middle of the Healdsburg square and had one of the best nights out. My partner ordered the Modern Margarita (el tequileño + tapatio blanco, clarified lime), and wow--we were both blown away. It was crystal clear and somehow incredibly smooth. We'd never had a clarified cocktail before, and it totally set the tone. I stuck with a dirty gin martini and then a Manhattan, and both were next-level good. That martini was super dirty but still perfectly clear--mind blown. Easily one of the best I've ever had. Food-wise, we started with the maitake mushrooms--tempura style with house kewpie and spicy sesame. They came out looking way more dramatic than expected (in the best way) and totally delivered on flavor. We had also ordered the Matheson Burger (wagyu, raclette, caramelized onions on the side) and split it. Perfectly cooked, super juicy, and rich without being over the top. We came in thinking it was just a casual dinner spot and ended up having a Michelin-level experience--without even realizing it. 10/10 would go again for a special night out or even just a really good drink at the bar. read more

The ambiance of this place is wonderful and so was the service. Our server (didn't catch her name) really made the experience and the owner even overheard us talking about a birthday as he was walking by and stopped to chat with us about it. 5 stars for service/hospitality but for me, the food was lacking. Everything was very over salted (not seasoned, salted) I felt like I had to down half a glass of water with every bite. Two people in my party shared the tomahawk (I believe it's listed as like 35-40oz) and we were made to believe it would feed them and THEN some, but they finished it still hungry as a majority of it was just inedible fatty pieces. We did have a later reservation, so maybe it was a one off experience. But I would go again for the service alone - just not get the tomahawk lol read more

The Matheson is such a great place for fine dining. We have the chef selection and really enjoyed the Dungeness crab linguine, which was so unique. The bone marrow and toast was a very surprising dish that tasted so good and yet so simple. The tuna tartare was as good as a sushi spot. Overall, there are no bad dishes - here everything is delicious. This venue is definitely upscale with a young and chic crowd, as well as a more seasoned professionals visiting the area. Came here at about 8:30 PM and the bartender told me that the kitchen was closing early not a huge fan of places that operate outside of their normal business hours if you're going to have special hours or you just wanna leave early it's very unprofessional. We spent my husband's birthday weekend in Healdsburg and came here for one of his celebration dinners. It was really bustling -- the energy was high and the music was great. We sat at the Chef's counter and the staff had a signed birthday card set at hubby's seat, which was a nice touch. Given that we did a lot of wine tasting that weekend, I decided to go with cocktails -- and I was not disappointed by the creative cocktails! We got the cucumber salad, the pan seared foie gras, an interesting fish dish, the pasta with uni, and the churros for dessert! All of the dishes were delicious and they also wrote "Happy Birthday" on his churro plate, which was a nice touch. After dinner, we headed up to the rooftop bar for a nightcap. And they serve a nice Sangiovese from Avilo as their house happy hour so I drank some of that then you go talk to the Sommelier and give him your credit card and exchange for the key to the best vino!! I'm getting excited all over again because the wine wall has 88 wines to choose from under argon gas which stops anything getting to the wine. Ie oxygen is the big killer of wine so it's the best system when it works. That's me speaking from experience is all that!! Hats off to The Matheson. An understated building right off of the downtown Healdsburg square, this restaurant takes over a large portion of the block, but you would never know. We started off at their rooftop bar, Roof 106, for drinks before dinner. This is a happening place, so make sure you either have a reservation or come early, otherwise you may be waiting for a bit. For dinner, we opted for the Chef's Counter to make it extra special since we were celebrating a birthday. From beginning to end, the staff treated us with a balance of family and elegance, always there for a friendly recommendation but keeping an eye on every detail. We did the Chef's Picks, which if you can, I would HIGHLY recommend. Over five courses, we were able to watch the kitchen at work and appreciate every bite and course. In tasting menus, you worry, will it be enough food? Will I like all the courses? Will I need a hamburger at the end of this? This was the perfect balance of rich and light, full but not engorged. And we can't leave out the wine! Their 88-bottle wine wall is a sight on its own, but their selection is nothing small or short of impressive. If you have the opportunity, do the wine pairing. As big wine fans, the wines we maybe were hesitant about were perfect with the food they were paired with. Seems intuitive, but often not always the case. It seemed like the prices were lower than I remember; which was a relief. 2 items I had were Amazing ( some of the best I e ever had), the tempura mushroom appetizer and the Pappardelle with rabbit entree. I'd consider coming back if the menu had more appealing options and I think it might change often. We came here for their happy hour and had dinner a few weekends ago. We came with my sister and brother in law for our birthday. We had originally booked Bravas for tapas, but it was rainy and the guy doing our wine tasting that day said the indoors seating wasn't great vibes. We came here instead and enjoyed their very generous and pretty solid happy hour. We got some drinks and an assortment from the menu - the burger, the riclette/oil dip with bread, and fries. Only item was when we went upstairs to sit down to have drinks prior to dinner there was so many chairs open but the girl was very rude and not helpful and said they were booked and couldn't help us. It happened again when we went back for drinks after dinner with a smaller amount of people which it was three people the first time and four the second and she was just rude.
