My wife and I had the good fortune to stumble upon restaurant Otra while visiting Providence RI. Contrary to a traditional Tapas jaunt, we went for an early dinner, and they did not disappoint. Also, since this is a review, I'm going to just say it - after you've had Tapas in Spain, you learn to temper your expectations when having Tapas in the US. No such tempering needed for Otra! The atmosphere was fantastic, a clean and very professionally run establishment with and outstanding kitchen. Very nice decor made for nice ambiance, even for a 5pm meal. We were very warmly greeted by Jeanne, who led us to the best surprise of all. 1/2 price Tapas! Come between 5pm and 6pm on a Tuesday, and the entire tapas menu, plus some small plates from their entree menu are half off if you eat at the bar! The bar was perfect! Their bread service alone with baguette, olives, marcona almonds, and a garlic spread that has to be experienced would be a legitimate menu item in and of itself. Our bartender Alexis took amazing care of us with great conversation, in depth explanations of their offerings, as well as their preparation methods, and he mixed a Cosmo that made my wife order two. Patatas Bravas, two orders of gambas a la plancha (I had Romesco sauce), Croquetas that were the MVP of the meal, the Buratta Bruschetta special (not 50%), and the pissaladiere with two desserts, two Cosmos and a glass of Rioja for under $125 before tip!!! Otra is in a great, easy to get to location, with a parking lot adjacent (3 hr validation), and plenty of meter spaces too. The interior is eloquent if spare - not filled with tchotchkes; your table and your food is their focus. There is a large bar as well, with a bartender offering a nice drink menu. Our server was a wonderfully happy and highly compotent fellow; remembered everything, very efficient; ever-present. Incredibly diverse menu with varied tapas, charcuterie & large plates; decent wine list and a very, very good dessert list. The 'Double Chocolate Cake' was one of the best I've had in 40+ years dining out. We hope to return at some point in the future, and bring others (otras) along. read more

I had to leave a review after seeing some of the critical feedback on recent reviews. Otra hits it out of the park everytime we have dined there. The staff; amazing, attentive, knowledgeable, friendly. Literally all you could ask for from front of house to back. I'm a very picky eater, but I haven't had a single thing I disliked there. I grossly dislike mushrooms but ate every single one of them in the chicken madeira (a special). I'm not a huge lentil fan but eat every bite of the Duck with smoked bacon and lentil stew. The dishes are very unique and unlike any other dining experience that I've had in the state. For apps, I highly recommend the Huevos Cabreados and the Otra Caeser salad ( be warned, it's huge and could be a meal for 1). For entrees I recommend the pollo ai ajillo, crispy chicken primavera, the duck and bife a casa. To be critical, the calamari portion isn't as big as you'd typically expect in most other restaurants but the aoli is unique compared to traditional sauces and when you get your entrees, you'll want the extra room if you have any after eating the bread. read more

I rarely write Yelp reviews. However, having recently dined at the bar of Otra, I couldn't resist heaping praise for yet another flawless dining experience at this restaurant. Otra was great! The two of us had a total of 5 tapas, delicious wine and then a dessert. Otra also gives a complimentary, generous trio of garlicky aioli and olives and unusual almonds with a hunk of rustic bread. We especially liked the potato croquettes with piquillo pepper sauce, the surprise meatballs inside another potato treat, and the eggplant dish that's like a Spanish "caponata". The service was fantastic -- attentive, knowledgeable and warm without being overbearing. The setting was modern, spacious and lovely. Our only slight complaint was that it got really noisy as the restaurant filled up. Next time we might opt to sit in the outdoor patio, to be able to talk and hear. read more

Otra restaurante, while it has a very nice ambiance and service, the food it's a lack luster for the price and expectation of a restaurant of its type (gastronomic). The restaurant has good food and it's presentation is very good, however the authenticity and flavor is what is lacking. For tapas, they seem to use a cream sauce as their base and that is not what tapas are like. If you find the rating high for the comments - it's because the restaurant itself is nice - the food it's above decent but lacks authenticity and flavor. I'd been wanting to try this place since they opened and it did not disappoint. My partner and I went on the later side on a weekend and were able to get seated at the bar right away. The bar is spacious and gorgeous as is the whole space. Kitchen design is semi/mostly open which also adds to the atmosphere. The restaurant also has some large roll up doors allowing for extra seating and fresh air. Overall great and unique design. Service was on point our bartender was friendly and attentive. A woman who I assumed was either an owner/manager came over to check in with us which was done adeptly. She checked on the food, told us about the rotating menu and some changes coming, and moved on (perfectly done). We've had spotty service at a lot of places lately and having worked as a bartender for nearly 15 years my standards are high. Happy to say Otra did a great job in this area. The cocktail menu looked interesting. My partner had a pisco based one and a pisco sour which were delicious and different. I was exhausted from a long day of traveling so reluctantly made the decision to nurse a vodka soda instead of trying anything new. Looking forward to trying some of their custom cocktails when I'm not at risk of napping at the bar. Food was interesting and delicious. We ordered some croquettes, a fried potato and egg dish, and a couple sandwiches, Iberian ham plus a beef/Brie one (can't remember the exact names unfortunately). All were delicious, but I do wish we had ordered a bit differently. All 4 of these were great but definitely filling/rich. Mixing it up with a few less carb heavy items would've balanced it out better. Favorite menu item was the croquettes, they had what tasted like a smoked tomato jam that paired very well. All in all great experience. I'd likely recommend ordering most of the food items we did as a a snack with a drink between meals or pairing them with something lighter. Orta is a one and done for me. The food was good, my daughter and I made a reservation and were on time for our table. We were seated on time and given the menus. Our waiter was not well trained, and it showed. There were offers for different types of water and when asked he did not know the prices, and seemed to take offense when I asked. My daughter and I ordered tapas and we were served bread, olives, almonds and dip. We enjoyed it, it paired nicely with our tapas. When we asked for more we were told it was 15.00 for more and a 1.00 per roll. I don't like being nickeled and dimed for everything. When we asked about the charge we were told " It was very expensive, they give one to every two people and if a party of three sits down they give two. It's clear they are trying to make a profit off something that is not expensive, certainly not 15.00. Would we have gotten a second one for 5.00, of course we would have. We had ordered 7 dishes, and would have ordered dessert and more wine, but this just left a bad taste. We were given more bread and I was told there would be no charge. The night before I had some clams at AlForno and the bartender went out of his way to get me their delicious sourdough, to sop of the broth. He was kind and efficient. There was no mention of an additional bread charge, just excellent service. The food we had was tasty and based on that alone, I would have gone back, but as the night wore on our waiter kept fawning over us, and it became very uncomfortable. We could not wait to get out. When we asked for our check there was an extra charge for bread, and when I asked about it I was told I was wrong to understand there would not be a charge. What a shame, they lost over 20.00 or more over dessert and a drink. They also lost my business. I'll be heading back to Al Forno, for their clams, and bread that is served without an extra charge. read more

We showed up early on a Friday, and it was surprisingly quiet. The bar and general ambiance is relaxed but also beautiful. We were greeted like old friends (the kind of friends who tell you not to worry about paying the street parking and you're not sure if you should believe them). The Spanish aioli is like a drug . Everything felt authentically put together, including ingredients, beverages, music and decor. Our server was helpful and a sweetie. I honestly can't believe this place wasn't more packed. I hardly ever give poor reviews but the food was so bad I felt the need to warn others. First of all, the ambience is great! The place was really nice and our waitress did a great job in serving us. Coming from someone who has traveled to Spain and experienced all of their great cuisine this is not even close. First of all we had the pulpo tapas which was very small portioned and lacked flavor. We had charcuterie board and while the serrano ham and manchengo were decent, it didnt have any bread or crackers to pair it with. The biggest fail of the night was the paella which we had the valencia. The chicken was very crisp and they gave plenty of little necks but it had a weird marinera sauce I've never seen used on any paella I've ever had and it lacked flavor. Mediterranean cuisine tends to use plenty of garlic and this place seemed like it didn't have any at all. I would have given it a 2.5 stars for the service and ambience but my wife and I are foodies and that was a huge a fail!! read more

We got to sit at the chef's table and see the owners in action. The food was fantastic and truly enjoyed our time. The service took a bit long, and we missed a show. The restaurant is beautiful, deep wood tables, white napkins and good lighting. The service was very good, attentive but but over done, and the food came out of the kitchen in a timely manner. My spouse and I ordered several small plates, Tapas, and were some what disappointed. The small plates were not small, the octopus was charred on the outside but had an undercooked gooey texture on the inside, the meat and cheese board was enough for four people not two. I came here for a 40th birthday dinner. Couldn't be happier with a restaurant. There were twelve of us and got two tables back to back. Rego - my Spanish speaking friend, and Rich - my water sign brother, took such good care of us all. We were in good hands. The drinks flowed. The Paloma was a big hit and my friends quickly realized the difference between a mezcal and a normal, blanco tequila. I was the happy recipient of a drink that was deemed too smoky. The wines' provenances and similarities to more well known versions were well explained by Rego to our table. The espresso martini call raised 8 out of 12 hands for ordering. And were fully enjoyed by all. The food - alllll the tapas were ordered. The complimentary aioli is amazing and would be worth purchasing. Spread on bread with some marcona almonds - perfect. The most impressive presentation was the huevos cabreados. Rego took the shoestring potatoes and broke the soft fried eggs and mixed them together to make a delicious mixture. As someone who has never understood the appeal of a soft yolk, I take it back. I get it now. The yolk became a creamy sauce mixed with the bravas sauce. Totally addictive. The bocadillos were great - we split them up among the table. The cheeses and charcuterie were a huge highlight. One diner, 5 months away from her stint with Covid, was very disappointed to miss out on the pungency of the blue cheese. A favorite bit of the night and dinner was the chorizo. Slightly spicy and smoky; we couldn't get enough. Two salad for our table of six were ordered. We all sat, satiated, as Rego informed us our entrees were on their way out. We'd have to make more room. The pan-seared chicken sherry was amazing. I forgot it had mushrooms and I hate mushrooms. I just pushed them to the side and enjoyed the juiciest, most flavorful chicken breast. The carne a la plancha con huesos huecos was melt in your mouth good. I was brave ordering and thinking I'd dive into the marrow. I was balking when it arrived until Rego encouraged me. I'm so glad he did. The richness was next level. We also ordered the bife en casa and the steak was excellent, though the carne a la plancha was pretty next level and hard to come close to. Our other table also ordered a vegetarian paella - so good. The crispy side bits were the best. Our neighboring tables became friends as the night went on, as did the staff. I got to enjoy a high class version of a shotgunned Miller lite as I was fed a white wine through a decanter poured into my mouth. It was totally appropriate and appreciated by me and all my friends. In addition to Rego and Rich, the female manager and the super funny server were highlights to our night. We were taken such good care of. I have to say, to have your best birthday when you're 40 is a special thing. To have it enjoyed with friends with such good food and drinks and warm surroundings is something else. The place itself is beautiful but if you want to have a more authentic tapas experience you should go to Palo on steeple street. Having lived in Spain The patatas bravas weren't like any patatas I'd ever eaten. The croquetas were ok but most disappointing was the bread because it tasted old. Decided to try something different for my son's 19th birthday and came upon Otra. As a big fan of tapas, my wife and I were excited to introduce our budding foodie to something new. The restaurant is in a great location and the decor and design is beautiful. The same can be said for the presentation of the various plates we had...everything looked great. However, the taste of the food fell short. In general, it was bland and unexciting. Something so fundamental to tapas as Patatas Bravas, while visually interesting, was slightly undercooked and lacking the spicy, vibrant flavor that is the signature of the dish. The spare ribs (recommended by our waitress) were disappointing as was the Gambas a La Plancha. In all cases, each plate left us wanting...rather than wanting more. We decided to skip the entrees and instead got our check and left. Hopefully, Otra can up their game in the future and offer a more authentic Iberian dining experience. read more

Really happy to have found Otra (on Yelp) and to contribute an early review to what I'm sure will soon become a Providence fine dining staple. The restaurant has a bright and clean feel, and the service is welcoming from the minute you walk in the door (thanks again Emily). For a city with such great food and culinary character, the tapas options in Providence are really just beginning to come into their own and OTRA is no exception. I felt the menu and food walked a really great line between authenticity and creativity, yielding to a really special experience. The Iberian Ham and Truffled Cheese Bocadillo and the Huevos Cabreados were favorites; but would definitely note the Patatas Bravas as a standout for being a particularly thoughtful recreation of the classic dish; and the Scallops a La Plancha for being super fresh and perfectly cooked. Everything we tried was excellent and really look forward to coming back on an empty stomach to try some of the larger plates. read more
