I visited Sombra for the first time and it was during brunch. I had received a recommendation for this spot for brunch specifically and had to check it out! I was immediately impressed with the interior of this restaurant, it felt upscale and designed so tastefully, loved the atmosphere! Our serve was also really sweet, bubbly, and friendly too. This made our dining experience very pleasant. I order the Churro Iced Café Exprés for a drink, and it was so impressive looking. I loved that the churro was warm and the drink itself was really tasty. However, I think there was way too much whipped cream and not enough of the actual drink. For my main dish, I chose the Barbacoa Benedict - a super popular choice according to the waitress, and for good reason! The Benedict really was delicious, the meat was tender, the flavors popped, and I love a good bolo roll as a base. But, the homefries were SO salty. They were cooked nicely, but I couldn't enjoy them for more than a few bites. Overall, I really enjoyed Sombra as a brunch spot and would certainly visit again. Sombraaaaa! I've heard many positive things about dinner and drinks here, but no mention of brunch? We'll, let me tell you, they know how to do brunch, too. Priced a little highly in my opinion- I got the meat Omelette. It was tasty, it had a fair bit of carne asada in it and it was well seasoned. It also had some bacon and chorizo in there if memory serves me. I thought the portion could have been a little bit better for $23, or better yet, just make it $18-19. There's no reason an Omelette should come with a $23 price tag. I was actually satisfied with the portion given the mound of home fries. Which by the way were very tasty albeit, over salted. The braised beef Benedict that my wife got was very good, my only critique on it would be to toast the bolo a bit more because the whole thing was one texture. It missed the crunch you get with an English muffin as the base. I also thought the beef could have been more seasoned. One other order at the table included the breakfast tacos. You get 4 tacos piled with food. Actually looked like you got more than the Omelette. Noted for next time. I didn't order this, but tried it at the table- the spiked horchata drink was tasty. A little heavy on the whipped cream but it was a good drink! We were surprisingly the only ones in there besides one other table. Doesn't seem like brunch has caught on here? I had the burrito bowl with grilled chicken and ate it all; friends had fish tacos and enchiladas and had great things to say about their dishes. Sombra's guacamole is also very good- made with fresh ingredients and tasty additions. Their Red sangria is the best I ever had. One complaint was staffing- towards the end of our meal, our waitress had quite a bit to do and therefore was distracted. However, she was fantastic and, given the staffing situation many industries are facing, I commend her ability to manage many priorities. read more

I was impressed when I walked in, being familiar with the previous restaurant. I love the revocations completed on this place, it looks very chic. The host could have been a bit more welcoming. We had a reservation (on a Wednesday), there were very few patrons in the restaurant and it really seemed like an inconvenience for them to seat us. Our server was delightful and helped with our drink selections, I had the margarita flight. The spicy and Italian were my favorites. We split the dip trio app. The pico was very runny, but the black bean was delicious. I liked that you could pick and choose how many and what type of tacos you wanted. If you want to feel like you are eating in a Pinterest board, the atmosphere here is really quite good. It's relaxing but has a good buzz and the design team did a good job in both the look and the vibe. It has a loungy kind if atmosphere ... like someplace in NYC. The food is slightly below mediocre. The portions, flavours and quality are just not fantastic. While the menu seems creative and the descriptions of the dishes sound amazing, in reality, I've had much better Mexican from a mall food court in LA. This tasted like someone who grew up not Mexican created the menu using a Mexican cookbook. The flavors were just off ... way too much cilantro. Not enough pepper. If you told me this was Mexican food, I am not sure I'd believe you. The twisty shrimp is a sweet sauce are more Asian inspired than Mexican. The bowls I had were really no different than Chipotle from a tsste and quality perspective at over double the price. The only difference is that the cooks are very heavy handed from a sugar perspective. It seems like everything here is sweet ... right down to the addition of chopped pineapple. If you like sweet-flavors, you'll enjoy pretty much everything on the menu. If spicy or even balanced-tasting is how you enjoy your Mexican food, you may not enjoy it as much. The menu is difficult to navigate as there's nothing which stands out as a must have ... I find myself reading the menu over 2 or 3 times and licking a random item I am not very excited about. From a vibe and (super expensive) drinks standpoint, its cool. Although I think I've bought Pottery Barn furniture for less money than a margarita costs here. This wouldn't be my first, second or third choice (etc.) if I was dining in the area ... but the vibe inside is the best part. read more

I love to see new local places popping up in EG! Sambra has a beautiful interior with bars running down both sides of the restaurant. You can tell they were super thoughtful about the whole design. I also appreciate their valet parking (however if you are headed to Main Street and not to Sambra, them now owning the lots in the back makes parking a bit trickier.) I know they are a lounge, but EG is a super family forward town, so it would be nice for them to have a kids menu. I also thought it was odd that there were no prices on the cocktails. Maybe I missed them! The food was tasty, but the prices is super high for what you get. The highlight of the night for me was the queso dip and their churros with pineapple topped ice cream. We also got the elote ribs, which were good, but pricey, and we would have liked it more as a smaller side. The tacos were also tasty, but again the price felt quite high. Service was friendly and you just put the drink menu up when you need your waiter which is an efficient way to get your server when you need them. Great bar with excellent drinks, great wine selection, and shareable plates. There are two very large bars and tv's on both sides. Everything is brand new and done very well. The music was great and the games were on. We were a party of six so we got to try a whole bunch of different food. My favorites were the barbacoa, carne asada, the guacamole, bean dip, and salsa. Upon entering, my husband and I were impressed by the renovation! The bars on either side of the room give it a very trendy vibe. We sat at the bar to the left of the entrance. Tyler, our bartender, did a nice job attending to our needs and made sure the kitchen staff were aware of my allergies. My husband and I opted to get the guacamole. Honestly, it was ok, BUT $18 was way overpriced considering the very small serving size. We felt our drinks were overpriced as well considering they were in either half glasses or tall skinny glasses. Nestled in the heart of Main Street in East Greenwich RI, the new Mexican-inspired restaurant, Sombra (meaning shadow), offers a beautifully designed escape. The owners have clearly poured their hearts into transforming this space into a lively atmosphere, with each side of the restaurant having a unique personality. Let's start with the stunning decor. If there's one thing that captivates you instantly, it's the tons of different lighting and the beautiful tile work. I love the green serpent tile on the left bar that matches all their branding. It's a unique place in that the majority of seating are bar seats. There is also table/bench seating, and four other seating areas (2 by accordion windows on each side - these will be awesome in summer), there is a private space atop a handful of stairs, and a super chic half circle booth for a big group of friends. Their cocktail menu is 6 pages! I had the pleasure of Courtney crafting a gin-based drink that was off-menu, and it was seriously soooo good, great flavor and well balanced. My friend had a glass of wine and strawberry marg, all the cocktails around us looked really good. The menu is extensive. We tried the empanadas, fried avocado tacos and pineapple guacamole and it had us planning our next visit before we even finished our meal. Every bite you could tell used fresh ingredients. Note, it's less authentic Mexican and more Mexican-inspired. Some dishes are steak and fries for example. The vibe is off the charts, a super fun atmosphere, a good playlist bumping and it was very busy. The bar was jammed but everyone around us was super friendly and respectful. The staff are not only friendly but also incredibly attentive, ensuring that our dining experience was positive. A manager even stopped by to check on us. Kayla and Courtney were both awesome. Even the bathroom is an experience in itself, featuring skull gold foil wallpaper, an old telephone, and a quirky neon sign. It's these details that add to the overall playful and fun vibe of the restaurant, making it an ideal spot for a girls night out, a date night, or just a casual couples get-together. The hours are 11:30 AM to 1 AM every day, easy to remember! Next, I really want to try their brunch. Tried it for the first time yesterday. Very very pretty place and love that the owners finally got the idea to include more bar space since so many diners often prefer the conviviality of a bar rather than a table. Staff was great and have to say that the margarita I was served was one of the best I've had in a very long time. Certainly much much better than your typical bar drink that is either too sour or too sweet or just off. The food is interesting because it focuses on small bites. Ok, love it! But flavors could use some work. The classic guacamole was fresh and a hit; would love to see a spicier version on the menu. The chips that were served with it however were cold and dull. Would also love to see a homemade salsa and their own hot sauce. Asking for salsa and being handed a bottle of Cholula was not the right answer. Tried a variety of tacos. Difficult to eat in large part because of the corn tortilla preparation. The restaurant is cavernous and so by the time the taco leaves the kitchen and hits the table, the griddled corn tortilla is hard and rubbery to the taste. The pork taco was virtually all Cole slaw and I struggled to find the pork. My husband had a plato with a carne asada protein. Rice and beans were flavorful but the carne asada was pale and not appetizing. The restaurant has only been open for three weeks and no doubt will hone its kitchen much better. I understand it's a new restaurant. But, our waiter clearly forgot to put in our appetizers and entrees and then blamed it on the new POS system. Weird... Until last night when my wife ordered fajitas with beef and was served ~ 1 cup of unseasoned ground beef on the side, a way of cooking beef fajitas I have never seen in my many years of eating Mexican dishes. When brought to the attention of the wait staff they seemed not to understand that beef fajitas ARE NOT served with ground beef. To their credit they offered to replace it. We were seated and left waiting for over 15 minutes without anyone checking in on us or taking our orders despite my making eye contact with the hostess who seated us several times. When we decided to leave instead of dining here, the same hostess giggled and said "Have a good night!" There were three hostesses total standing around looking bored and gossiping at the front. I live in EG and was excited for this place. I went during a week night for dinner, so it wasn't very packed and the service was good. My friend and I ordered speciality cocktails which were very good and cute, which warrants the price. The food was not good at all. I got a shrimp taco and avocado taco. The shrimp was soggy and the cheese on there tasted like it went bad. The avocado taco was also subpar at best. My friend got the taco salad which was basically lettuce with no meat, she had to request chicken on the side. Overall, the vibes are great, the drinks are really good but the food is eh. I commend the staff as they were very nice and accommodating. Another plus is having 2 large bars which is great if you're a bar eater. However, the drinks are so puny for the price. The food is mediocre at best. The guacamole was a half cup serving with lots of chips. It was tasteless. The empanadas were so over cooked you could barely cut through them. Once again tasteless. Popped in for lunch. I ordered two tacos- one Chicken Tinga and one Barbacoa (beef). The bartender came from behind the bar to take my order. He was very pleasant, explained the menu, and took my order. There were no other diners at the tables but there were five people at the bar. The serving sizes were small but the bartender was open to requests for salsa and condiments. The Barbacoa was very good but the Chicken Tinga was not. It had some added elements that took away from the flavor. The restaurant was very cold but the weather in RI was different from day to day and they may not have been open very long. The interior renovation was well done. It looks nothing like the various restaurants that I've visited there over many years. Seating was comfortable. Vibe was upbeat. Service was very good. I ordered a carne assada. It was close to inedible- beyond tough- and was unappetitizing in its presentation- light gray. A corn dip was not bad, but pricey for what it was. My husband liked his dinner slightly more than I liked mine. I think that this establishment is intended by the ownership to be more of an upscale bar than a restaurant. If you like to go out for just drinks, I'd recommend it. I'd pass on the food though, because there are better dining options only a block or two from here. read more
