This is not Frank Pepe's, but it's a pretty good second place runner up. Our table ordered the Margherita, pepperoni, and clam pizzas. The first two were fantastic, and I especially recommend the pepperoni pie. Unfortunately, the clam pizza just had too many competing ingredients, and it was quite soggy in the middle. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Pepe's white clam pie, and this wasn't it. One quibble: someone at my table ordered a Coke, and was brought a frilly cola-esque concoction in a glass bottle. If you don't stock Coca Cola, no worries... but let your customers know when they order. read more

The pizza is amazing! You will not be disappointed. Large pizza selection as well. Ordered a bottle of wine that was good. Although I couldn't help but notice it was opened somewhere by someone but not in front of us at the table. Our waitress was very sweet. The only reason I didn't give 5 stats is because it really is just too hot. I understand there's a huge stove with a fire in it in the middle of the restaurant but comfort is a huge aspect of the dining experience. The chairs and stools are also uncomfortable which add to poor experience but it's an old building in Chester and space is obviously limited so I can understand sacrificing a little in order to accommodate people in such a small space. 5 stars in the winter or for take out though for sure. read more

This is really good pizza. Thin flavorful crust, like the pizza in Rome, crisp and a little chewy, cooked in a 900 degree wood burning oven. Very creative toppings and excellent cheeses. We had one with thinly sliced potato, fontina cheese, Calabrian red chiles and a slight drizzle of olive oil which was full of deep, rich flavor. Our other had ricotta cheese,and an Italian smoked cheese, spinach and pancetta and was just as delicious. We started with a very good shaved fennel salad dressed in olive oil salt and lemon juice and grated Parmesan. There were three of us and we took some pizza home. I think this pizza is as good as it gets and I can't wait to go back for more. read more

Typical of the River Tavern team, everything top notch. Pizza is delicious with a fluffy/chewy but crispy crust, fresh and delicious ingredients, wonderful service, and perfect ambiance. The simple pies are amazing and the creative and unusual pies are also fabulous. Great stopping point to/from New York/New England. Easy access from highway. Only complaint is the ac blows freezing air when sitting at window tables. But the staff promptly covered the vent with a large napkin and made it comfortable. read more

Why is this pizza so good?? Unbelievably tasty, wonderful ever changing menu, delicious salads too! I always get the shaved fennel salad and am always happy. The food and service at Otto is excellent. But they serve wine in a soda glass which if I had known I never would have ordered a bottle of wine. I do not know who will order a $95 bottle of wine, which is on their list and drink it out of a soda glass. Totally unacceptable. When they charge triple the list price for wine, I think they can afford to buy some wine glasses. read more

Excellent pizza. Actually one of the best pizzas I've ever had. It had a great, casual ambiance and you can watch them make the pizza. The only problem is that seating is very limited which makes it seem crowded. If you can get a table at the bar or outside, everywhere else seems like it's crammed. read more

I cannot believe all the rave reviews about this place. We just got home from Otto and had a horrible experience. We were the first to arrive for dinner and it took 10 minutes just to get our drinks. We only ordered 2 sodas and 2 apple juices for our 2 young girls. (3 & 2) When we got the apple juice, it came in these small glass jars. Super cute, but not practical for little kids. Then we asked for straws and they did not have straws!!! We saw the waitress leave to go get straws at another restaurant down the street. How does a restaurant not have straws. Because our waitress had to go down the street, we were sitting for 25+ minutes already without our food order being taken. My husband finally got up and went to the counter where another woman took our order, 2 pizzas and a salad. We got 1 of the pizza's pretty quickly, but we never got the salad and the 2nd pizza came out about 5 minutes later. My husband again got up and went to the counter and asked to cancel the salad since we never got it. The pizza was ok, but nothing worthy of the reviews. Maybe I'm biased being a native New Yorker, but there is much better pizza and SERVICE along the shoreline. We will not being going back. read more

I've enjoyed the delicious gourmet pizza creations at Otto twice now while visiting Chester and I know that I will be back to eat my way through the entire menu. Both of my visits thus far have only been to pick up to go orders, but I hope to someday sit down for a meal in their cozy location! My first visit last summer we enjoyed the margherita pizza with liuzzi mozzarella, basil + stracciatella, which was incredible. Margherita pizza is a favorite of mine but this was by far the best I've ever had - so much delicious flavor and clearly the highest quality ingredients. Last night I picked up a house made sausage pizza with scamorza, caramelized onions, chilies + herbs and was yet again blown away by the flavor. As an extra treat with last night's order I added a slice of tiramisu to my order; the portion was so generous it served three of us and there's still leftovers! Tiramisu is a favorite dessert of mine and Otto's did not disappoint. I can't wait for my next meal there! read more

I went there for the first time this past weekend with friends. While the food is EXCELLENT, the service is most decidedly not. Despite the fact that a table was empty, we waited for almost 10 minutes to be seated, and it went downhill from there. We had to remind the waitress to bring our wine, which despite the fact that we ordered it first, came after our pizza arrived. They have been open long enough that these things should have been worked out by now. read more

We held a graduation party at OTTO for my son on a Saturday afternoon until 6 pm. About 35 people attended. We picked two salads, 5 types of pizza, 4 kinds of wine and a selection of beer. The pizza was fantastic-- thin crust, but not too thin and hard. Delicious combinations of toppings. The salads were also delicious. The fennel salad was particularly memorable. The staff just kept the pizzas coming. Bar was self serve, but the staff kept track of what was consumed. Staff was attentive without being overbearing. They allowed us to bring our own dessert--cake. Overall the event worked out perfectly and within budget. Only possible issue (which was not an issue for us at all) could be that I can see the place getting a little warm on a hot/humid day in the Summer. Thank you OTTO! read more

Woo-hoo. What a super fine 'IKEA-VIBE' pizza eatery. Stainless steely pristine. A small wood-burning oven fires at about 900 degrees or so. Good things rise within it. Located in a beautiful village, I visited on a gorgeously cool summer day. In the Chester area, people are gardening, boating, walking, crafting, swimming, working or whatever, during the week. A crowd doesn't arrive early. I was fortunate. I ordered the Caesar Salad which was the best I've had in CT. Whole beautiful & properly chilled light green juicy romaine leaves. I watched him prepare a sweet-tart salad dressing. A delicate balance of local egg, anchovies, lemon, garlic, evo. Luscious. I ordered a plain pie on this day. [I've tasted their marguerite which is quite good]. The crust & 'smokey' flavour of the plain pie is grand. I sipped on a THIMBLE ISLAND DRAFT IPA while watching my simple pie pop within two minutes Next time, I will order something extravagant as I saw the likes of panacetta, eggs, arugula, meats and all forms of toppings being added to dough. Its a beautiful thing. As a single diner, I took 1/2 pie home to freeze. My only concern was the matter of sodium. Am not certain if the chopped mozz used on a regular pie is the same grade as the mozz used on the marguerite but I noticed how salty it was, the next day. True, but that's me. Most wouldn't notice at all. Highly recommended. Pleasant attentive staff and of course, there's Mr. Rapp overseeing it all. read more

Who would of thought in the small town of Chester Connecticut there is a pizza joint that serves the best thin crust pizza ever. My family in the area has been raving about Otto's since it opened, and while visiting recently we took decided to head down and order a few different pizzas to try. Apparently just before my arriving in town Otto's had been dubbed the 2nd best pizza in CT, just behind the state's famous Pepe's. I have had Pepe's a few times, but it absolutely pales in comparison to Otto's. The crust is superior, the ingredients always taste fresh, and the flavor combinations are superb. We got a margherita, the squash blossom (which upon reordering a few nights later had bell peppers added, completely upping the quality), and a pizza with egg, ricotta, and grana podano. Every pizza was delicious, the return a few nights later proved the place consistent. I highly highly recommend Otto's to anyone even remotely close to Chester. Without a doubt Connecticut's best. read more

Went to OTTO last night. Had the simple cheese, pepperoni and the mortadella pizzas. All were awesome. The pepperoni has a nice kick to it, definitely recommend it. Service was great and the staff was friendly. We were celebrating a belated birthday for my wife. We did not say anything to the server but she noticed the gift asked if it was a birthday and brought out a piece of tiramisu with a candle on it without us evening saying anything, nice touch. Was in Chester earlier yesterday (7/2) spending some time with my guy. We walked around downtown and checked out the Sunday farmer's market. Upon seeing the outside of Otto we remarked upon the building's cool sliding door. Neither of us had never been to eat here and it was actually his first time in Chester at all. We looked at the menu posted outside and I honestly wanted to start drooling. We immediately went inside. We were warmly greeted by the waiter/bartender and sat in a corner table. We ordered some drinks and 2 pizzas. Can I just say the pizza was out of this world. Both were good don't get me wrong but both of us agreed the margherita was insane. Like your eyes roll back into your head insane. We wanted to order multiple to go home with!!! We were headed to Gillette castle next so didnt stay for dessert but we WILL be back and often ;) iur waiter even nicely picked up our drink tab. Pains me to right this review. When Otto first opened they were spot-on with everything. All the small details were carried out like they cared. Over the past 6 months the few times we've gone had a feeling of decline. Not sure if ownership or management has changed hands, or what. The kicker for me to writing this review was the night we went, both the pizza makers (one guy prepping the dough, one guy doing the toppings) were playing games on their phone in between every single pizza they prepared - giggling and laughing like elementary students. Bare handed, hands unwashed the entire time. I understand the pizza goes into a super hot oven and most anything will be eliminated, but it was the most unappetizing thing I've seen in a while at a restaurant. We had a front row seat at the bar top and could see the film on both of their phone screens as they went from that, to making pizzas. Only the hostess tried once or twice to discretely tell them to put their phones away and they listened for maybe 5 minutes. They couldn't have cared less about the product they were putting out to customers. We ate one or two pieces and the rest boxed up, my appetite was shot. Sadly I won't be going back. read more
