Ron has the rudest manner of practically any shop owner I've encountered. Do not take ANY of your riding tack to him. The "clean and condition" job on my saddle left it sticky with a whitish residue. It took three, 40 min trips and a police officer to get what I could of my tack back, one girth never returned. In business for 40 years...really? Must be a big market for Harley biker jackets, wallets and belts. But this isn't a place to leave your nice tack. read more

For a small business it is absolutely clear that they have a great reputation and that they do a lot of business. I had my Harley jacket repaired, a simple ripped seam. I recently put a lot of time into researching and investing in some good boots and shoes that will hopefully last me for years to come. But I also needed to make sure I took proper care of them. There's no point resoling worn-out uppers. Coincidentally, we also bought a used leather couch and managed to scuff some corners in the process of moving it, so we'd been trying to figure out what we could do about that. It all worked out nicely, because it turned out the solutions were quite similar. One of the problems with looking online for information about leather care is knowing how far to trust the sources. Mostly you find Web sites for specific products, where they tell you why other stuff doesn't work right. Obviously. But when I asked at In Step Leather, they recommended Outback for repair and maintenance advice. Outback does all kinds of leather repair and sells some leather care products. They specialize in equestrian, which I guess is a good idea, so close to the Laurel Race Track. The shop has loads of character, and the proprietor was very helpful. He confirmed what I'd read online about leather conditioning and recommended a brand called Bickmore. Regarding the couch, he suggested conditioning the whole thing, while emphasizing the scuffed areas. After a few applications, there was significant improvement. You can still see the marks if you look for them, but some are almost completely invisible, while the worst are just slightly discolored. read more

OMG! Ron is amazing! I needed a place to alter two HD biker chaps! Found Outback Leather store on the web. Went there this afternoon and there he was: the Leather Master, a true guru! He told me all about chaps, the right way to wear them, and even altered them right there! In a few minutes, the chaps looked perfect! I was so impressed at the quality of his work and most of all, his customer service rapport. I felt like I've known him forever! Loved his sense of humor and professionalism! Found Outback Leather when I was looking for a business to do a refit/alteration on my biker jacket after I lost 60 pounds but want to shell out the cash for a new jacket. Brought the jacket in and had it back within three hours. Ron was a pleasure to do business with - fast, quality work at a reasonable price. Western leathers might be their advertised specialty, but it's clear from looking around the shop and talking to Ron and his folks that they can handle just about any leather repair, refit, or custom creation. I used Outback Leather in 2016 for a repair. To this day I'm still very appreciative of their work and realized I never wrote a review so here I am. I have been using a very cool looking leather key fob ever since I got it as a souvenir in Italy back in 2002. It looks like a miniature whip (don't ask ;-)) and I love it because I can easily feel the fringe part in the bottomless pit of my purse. In fact, it's actually very hard to misplace my keys because of this distinctive fringe. Anyway, a couple years ago I noticed the leather piece that attaches the metal keyring to the leather handle of the whip was starting to tear. I went to a couple places to see if they could repair it and came up empty handed. Then, finally, it completely tore. I tried jerry-rigging it back together but it looked like crap, didn't hold together, it just didn't work. Oh, well, all good things come to an end, so I put my keys on a "normal" key fob. Ugh, that was when I started misplacing my keys. What a pain!!!! The other bad part was having my favorite key fob sitting useless in a drawer. I couldn't part with it but I also dislike keeping broken things. Double ugh. People write "Ron is amazing" or some other accolade. Believe it! I found Outback Leather on a Google search. Somewhere it said they could do any leather repair, big or small, no matter how weird. I had nothing to lose. As soon as I walked in I felt like I was in a time machine and had gone back to bygone days. Remember the days when people actually had things repaired and very little was thrown away? I do. There are tools of the trade everywhere... piles of scrap leather, old projects, new projects, relics of the horse racing days at Laurel Racetrack, big old wooden workbenches, industrial leather sewing machine. I can go on for days. It's like a working museum. I wish I could be a fly-on-the-wall because I LOVE watching people make and create stuff. So Ron looks at my key fob and says this is nothing. In less than 10 minutes he had it repaired! He could have done it quicker if he didn't talk on the phone then greet another client. Not only did he match the color of the torn piece of leather but he even matched the texture of it, too. Then there was the "entertainment". What a wonderful, knowledgeable businessman. He explained all the different steps he was doing, even telling me the different ways he could have done it. We even talked about running a small business (which I also do), growing up in PG county and how he got started in business. It's going to be a sad day when he retires. No one around here has his skill nor knowledge base. What a treasure he and his business is!!! read more
